On a Kindle Scribe that supports Amazon’s current sharing tools, convert handwriting from a downloaded notebook: open Notebook, select More under the notebook, choose Share, then select Convert to text and quick send or Convert to text and email. The first sends the result to the email associated with the Scribe’s Amazon account; the second lets you review the recognition page by page before sending it.
Amazon’s related sharing documentation limits the described conversion and connected-drive features to Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later. Check the exact model and the menus on your device before assuming that an older Scribe has these options.
What you need before converting
The conversion is handled by the Scribe’s sharing service rather than by a separate handwriting app. Prepare the notebook and account first so that the conversion choices appear.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A downloaded notebook: The notebook must be stored on the Scribe. A cloud-only item will not show the same Share workflow until you download it.
- An internet connection: The device needs to be online for recognition and sharing.
- The correct recognition language: The selected language applies to notebook conversions across the device.
- An associated email address: Quick send uses the email associated with the Amazon account registered to the Scribe. Amazon says the email-preview option is unavailable when no email is associated with that account.
- A supported model: Amazon’s current share and connected-drive instructions describe these options for Scribe models released in 2025 or later.
If you are unsure which generation you own, open the Scribe’s device information and compare its model details with Amazon’s current help guidance. The detailed conversion page does not itself state the model-year restriction, so the model-specific sharing pages are the safer compatibility reference.

Set the handwriting-recognition language
Choose the language before converting. A mismatch can make otherwise legible writing produce poor text or conversion errors.
- Open Settings.
- Select Device Options.
- Open Language & Dictionaries.
- Tap Handwriting Recognition.
- Choose the language used in the notebook.
Amazon lists these recognition languages:
- Afrikaans
- Arabic
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong and Taiwan)
- Danish
- Dutch
- English (UK)
- English (U.S.)
- French
- Canadian French
- German
- Icelandic
- Italian
- Japanese
- Norwegian
- Brazilian Portuguese
- Russian
- Spanish
- Swedish
The setting is device-wide for notebook conversions. If notebooks contain different languages, change the setting to match the notebook you are about to process, then convert that notebook. There is no separate language choice in the Share dialog described by Amazon, so setting it beforehand is important.
For a notebook with mixed-language pages, convert only after deciding which language dominates the pages you need. If the result is poor, switch the device setting and retry the notebook; changing the setting does not rewrite an already delivered TXT file.
Convert a notebook with email
Email is the most direct route when you want text you can copy into another document. You can either send immediately or inspect Amazon’s recognized text before sending.
Quick send without a preview
- Open the Notebook tab.
- Find the downloaded notebook.
- Select More beneath its thumbnail.
- Tap Share.
- Choose Convert to text and quick send.
The Scribe sends the converted content to the email address associated with the Amazon account registered to the device. Amazon also makes a searchable PDF available as a second link in the message. This option is useful when you want the conversion processed with no page-by-page review on the Scribe.
Quick send is best for a clean, ordinary text notebook that you plan to proofread later on a computer. It is not a good shortcut for pages full of equations, diagrams or unusual symbols, because Amazon lists those elements as unsupported. Keep the original notebook or another handwriting-preserving output even when the TXT looks readable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Review and edit before sending
- Open the Notebook tab and select the downloaded notebook.
- Choose More, then Share.
- Select Convert to text and email.
- Review the recognized text one page at a time.
- Edit any text that the recognizer misread.
- Send the result using the on-screen sharing control.
You can also open the notebook first and tap the Share icon at the top instead of using More beneath the thumbnail. Amazon says edits made in this preview are not saved on the Scribe itself. If you need the edited text in another document, copy it from the shared text file after the email arrives.
For this route, select the option to attach the notebook as a searchable PDF when you want a handwriting-preserving reference in addition to recognized text. Amazon cautions that the searchable PDF does not include changes made during the Convert to text and email preview, so treat the edited text and the PDF as separate outputs and check both before filing or sharing them.
The preview is therefore a delivery-time correction step, not a way to permanently edit the notebook. If a correction matters, make it in the outgoing text, save that text after delivery, and retain the unmodified notebook or PDF as the source record.

What arrives by email
Amazon’s multi-page notebook guidance documents a TXT file alongside the handwritten-notes PDF when selected pages are converted. The TXT file is the practical copy-and-paste source; the PDF retains the original handwriting and adds searchable text where supported. A shared link expires after seven days, so download the files or move them to your long-term storage before the link disappears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe exact attachments can vary with the sharing choice and whether you selected a PDF, so open the message and verify the files before deleting the notebook from the Scribe. The conversion instructions and multi-page details are available from Amazon’s conversion help and multi-page notebook help.
For selected-page conversions, check that the TXT and handwritten-notes PDF cover the same pages. A TXT file is convenient for search and copy/paste, while the PDF is the better audit trail when a name, date, number or punctuation mark is questioned later.
Export to Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote
Eligible newer Scribe models can share notebooks to connected cloud destinations. The Scribe must be registered, connected to the internet and linked to the relevant Google or Microsoft account.
Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive
Amazon documents three useful output types for Drive destinations:
- A PDF that preserves the handwriting.
- Converted text.
- A searchable PDF.
Use this route when the destination matters more than receiving an email attachment—for example, when the notebook belongs in an existing Drive or OneDrive folder. The connected-drive instructions apply the same 2025-or-later model qualification described for the current sharing tools.
Cloud export does not remove the need for a local download before starting. Confirm that the notebook is available on the Scribe, that the account connection has completed and that the device remains online until the share finishes. If a cloud option is not shown, check model eligibility and account connection before treating it as a conversion failure.
OneNote
OneNote can receive the handwriting as a PNG, the converted text, or both side by side. The side-by-side choice is useful when you need to compare recognition against the original page while correcting errors later. Because the output types are different, decide whether your priority is a visual record, editable text or a paired reference before sending.
A PNG is an image of the handwriting rather than editable characters. Converted text is easier to revise, while the side-by-side arrangement keeps the visual context available for checking uncertain words. None of these choices makes unsupported diagrams or equations reliably transcribed; compare those pages with the image or PDF.

Choose the right conversion route
| Route | Destination | Output documented by Amazon | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Convert to text and quick send | Email associated with the registered Amazon account | Converted text plus a link to a searchable PDF | Fastest way to receive a copyable result | No on-device page-by-page preview before sending |
| Convert to text and email | Email associated with the registered Amazon account | Previewed text; optional searchable PDF; TXT and handwritten-notes PDF are documented for selected-page conversions | Correcting recognition before you send | Preview edits are not saved on the Scribe; the searchable PDF omits those preview edits |
| Google Drive or OneDrive sharing | Connected Google or Microsoft account | Handwriting-preserving PDF, converted text or searchable PDF | Putting the result directly in cloud storage | Requires an eligible model, internet access and a connected account |
| OneNote sharing | Connected Microsoft account | PNG handwriting, converted text or both side by side | Keeping original handwriting beside the recognized text | Requires an eligible model, internet access and a connected account |
Use email when you need a TXT-style copy-and-paste workflow. Use Drive or OneDrive when the destination folder is the main concern. Use OneNote when visual comparison between handwriting and converted text is part of your editing process. If you correct text in the email preview, preserve that edited text separately because the PDF generated by that flow will not carry those corrections.
There is no single “best” output for every notebook. A meeting agenda may need only converted text; legal, financial or technical notes benefit from both text and the handwriting-preserving file. Choose the output before sharing so you do not have to repeat a large conversion simply to obtain the missing format.
What handwriting the Scribe can and cannot recognize
Amazon says the recognizer handles cursive, printed handwriting and a few emoticons. It currently does not support the following content:
- Slanted writing
- Highlighter writing
- Writing made in landscape orientation
- Drawings
- Diagrams
- Equations
Unsupported marks may be omitted, turned into incorrect characters or prevent a useful conversion. Keep ordinary text upright and write with the selected recognition language when the notebook is intended for conversion. A page that mixes prose with diagrams or equations should be checked against the original PDF or PNG rather than treated as a complete transcription.
Recognition is not a permanent replacement for the handwritten source. Keep a handwriting-preserving PDF or PNG when the notes contain names, figures, symbols or formatting that the text output could lose. A searchable PDF can help locate words, but it should not be treated as proof that every mark was recognized correctly.
Preparing pages for better results
Before sharing, finish the notebook page and remove ambiguity where practical. Keep prose upright rather than writing across a landscape page, and do not rely on highlighter strokes to carry meaning. If a page combines a paragraph with a diagram or equation, expect to verify the paragraph manually and preserve the visual page. These steps do not add recognition capabilities; they simply keep the material closer to the formats Amazon says it supports.
How long conversion takes
Amazon specifically warns that a large, synchronized notebook of 100 or more pages can take over 10 minutes to convert. That is operational guidance, not a general speed benchmark; Amazon does not publish a typical time for smaller notebooks in the cited help. Leave the Scribe online and avoid interrupting the sharing process while a large notebook is being processed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If speed or reliability matters, divide very large notebooks into smaller notebooks before conversion where your note organization allows it. Keep the original synchronized notebook so that you can retry or export a handwriting-preserving copy if recognition fails. Do not assume that a short page count guarantees an instant result: Amazon gives no standard time for smaller notebooks.
For a 100-page notebook, start the process when you can leave the device connected for more than ten minutes. Wait for the email or cloud confirmation before launching another conversion, since repeated requests can make it harder to tell which output is complete.
Troubleshoot a missing option or failed conversion
The Convert to text option is missing
- Confirm that the Scribe is connected to the internet.
- Check that the notebook language matches Settings > Device Options > Language & Dictionaries > Handwriting Recognition.
- Install the latest device software available for your Scribe.
- If the device is running software version 5.16.2 or higher and the option still does not appear, restart the Scribe.
- Confirm that the notebook is downloaded rather than cloud-only.
- Check the model generation. Amazon’s current share documentation describes the conversion choices for models released in 2025 or later.
Also check where you opened the command. Amazon describes the choice under a downloaded notebook’s More > Share menu, or from the Share icon inside an open notebook. Looking at a cloud-only thumbnail or a different document type can make a working feature appear to be absent.

Conversion errors continue after syncing
Amazon recommends removing the notebook from the device, downloading it again by tapping its cover, and retrying the conversion. This refreshes the local copy after synchronization problems. Do not permanently delete the only copy of important notes before confirming that the notebook has synchronized elsewhere.
After redownloading, check the language and internet connection again. A fresh local copy does not correct a language mismatch or unsupported page content, so compare the page with Amazon’s recognition limits if the second attempt fails.
Quick send cannot be used
Quick send depends on an email address associated with the Amazon account used to register the Scribe. If that account has no associated email, add or correct the account information and try again. Amazon also says the Convert to text and email option is unavailable when no email is associated, so an account-address problem can affect both email choices.
The text is inaccurate
- Set the recognition language to the language used on the page.
- Make sure the device is online during conversion.
- Check whether the page uses slanted or landscape writing, highlighter marks, drawings, diagrams or equations, which Amazon lists as unsupported.
- Use the email-preview route to correct ordinary recognition mistakes before sending.
- Compare the final text with the handwriting-preserving PDF or PNG before relying on names, numbers or technical notation.
The email link no longer works
Amazon says the sharing link expires after seven days. Download the TXT, PDF or other output promptly and store it in the destination where you keep the notebook.
The PDF does not show my preview corrections
This is expected in the documented email-preview flow. Amazon says the searchable PDF does not include edits made during the Convert to text and email preview. Keep the edited text from the email separately, and use the PDF as the original handwriting reference rather than as a copy of the corrected preview.
These checks come from Amazon’s conversion troubleshooting guidance. Amazon’s help content and software eligibility can change, so the labels shown on your current Scribe take precedence if they differ from an older help page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical workflow for reliable results
- Prepare the page: Finish writing, keep prose upright, and separate diagrams or equations from text you expect the recognizer to transcribe.
- Set the language: Use the Handwriting Recognition setting that matches the notebook.
- Synchronize and download: Make sure the notebook is online and available locally on the Scribe.
- Choose the output: Pick quick send for speed, email preview for corrections, Drive or OneDrive for cloud filing, or OneNote for side-by-side comparison.
- Validate important passages: Compare names, dates, numbers and symbols with the original handwriting.
- Archive the result: Download shared files before the seven-day link expires and retain a handwriting-preserving copy for reference.
For most ordinary meeting notes, the email-preview route is the safest balance: it gives you editable recognized text while leaving the original handwriting available as a reference. Quick send is appropriate when immediate delivery matters more than correcting the text on the device. Cloud destinations make sense when your filing system already lives in Drive, OneDrive or OneNote.
A page-by-page quality check
After delivery, compare the TXT or converted-text view against the handwriting-preserving PDF or PNG. Start with proper names, dates, quantities, abbreviations and symbols, because a single misread character can change their meaning. Then check headings and page breaks if you plan to paste the text into another document. If a page cannot be verified because it contains unsupported marks, keep the image or PDF with the text rather than deleting it.
When to convert again
Retry when the language was wrong, the notebook was not fully downloaded, the device was offline or Amazon reported a synchronization error. Retry is less useful for a page built primarily from drawings, diagrams, equations, highlighter writing or landscape writing, all of which Amazon identifies as unsupported. In that case, export a visual copy and transcribe only the prose that can be checked reliably.
