You can convert an ownCloud server to Nextcloud, but treat it as a controlled manual update rather than a normal in-place upgrade. The safe path is to verify a supported source-to-target bridge, make restorable backups, schedule maintenance, replace the application code, run Nextcloud’s upgrade and database-repair commands, then validate users, files, shares, authentication, storage and background jobs before moving to newer Nextcloud releases.
What an ownCloud-to-Nextcloud conversion involves
A conversion keeps the existing database and data directory while replacing the ownCloud application with a compatible Nextcloud release. Nextcloud’s administration documentation allows this only when the source and target are sufficiently compatible in both database schema and codebase. It is therefore closer to a carefully staged manual update than to installing Nextcloud beside ownCloud and copying files.

The conversion puts the server into maintenance mode. Users cannot log in while the database migration runs, and a large installation may remain unavailable for hours. Plan a maintenance window, notify users, and do not begin until you have a tested recovery plan.
Supported bridge versions
The current Nextcloud 35 administration manual maps the following ownCloud branches to Nextcloud 34.0.0:

Release compatibility changes over time. Confirm the table against the current administration manual immediately before production work, and match the exact ownCloud source version rather than assuming that every 10.x release follows the same path. Older installations may need one or more intermediate ownCloud upgrades; do not invent a bridge version.

Inventory the ownCloud installation before changing anything
Create a written inventory that another administrator could use to reproduce the environment. Record:

- PHP version and enabled extensions;
- database engine and version, database name, and connection details;
- web server, virtual-host or reverse-proxy configuration, and the operating system;
- the absolute data-directory location and ownership;
- how ownCloud was installed: archive, Docker, Snap, virtual machine, operating-system package or Windows Server;
- enabled ownCloud and third-party apps, including custom code and themes;
- cron or other background-job configuration;
- LDAP or other directory integration;
- external storage mounts and credentials;
- encryption, sharing, retention, firewall, automated-tagging and file-drop settings; and
- mail, preview, WebDAV and client-sync configuration.
Also document the web-service account that runs PHP, the paths used by the current installation, and the exact commands or service controls needed to stop and start the deployment. These details differ between installation types, so an archive-install procedure should not be applied blindly to a container, Snap, package, virtual machine or Windows Server system.
Back up the installation and prove that recovery is possible
Nextcloud’s migration guidance is explicit: “Especially when migrating from ownCloud to Nextcloud you should create a backup of the config, database and the data directory, in case something goes wrong.” Make all three backups before enabling maintenance mode:
- Configuration: preserve the complete
config/directory, especiallyconfig/config.php, along with any web-server, PHP, reverse-proxy and cron configuration that is outside the application tree. - Database: create a consistent dump using the database engine’s supported backup method. Keep the dump with its engine and version information.
- Data: copy the complete ownCloud data directory, including user files, versions, trash, previews, file-cache records stored there and any externally mounted paths that are part of the service.
- Application code: preserve the original ownCloud application tree rather than deleting it. Keep a clearly identified copy for rollback.
A backup is not proven until you have performed a separate restore test. Restore the database and representative data to an isolated system, verify that the files and configuration can be read, and write down the recovery sequence. No migration plan should claim a backup is valid merely because a copy completed without errors. Keep the original backups until the final Nextcloud release has passed validation.

Select the bridge release and plan PHP changes
Download the Nextcloud release that the compatibility table identifies for the exact ownCloud version. Before scheduling downtime, check that the server’s PHP version and extensions meet that Nextcloud release’s requirements.
ownCloud does not and will not support PHP 8.0 or higher. The PHP change needed by a compatible Nextcloud release can therefore make the existing ownCloud service inaccessible before the new application code is installed. Arrange the order of work deliberately: have the target code and a tested rollback ready, change PHP within the maintenance window, and do not expose a half-upgraded system to users.
Perform the manual conversion
1. Announce maintenance and stop writes
Choose a window long enough for the database migration and verification. Ask users and automated clients to stop activity, and pause integrations that write to WebDAV or external storage. Confirm that your backups and rollback copy are available before proceeding.
2. Enable Nextcloud maintenance mode
Run the command as the account used by the web server. The documented pattern is:
sudo -u www-data php occ maintenance:mode --on
Replace www-data and the occ path with the HTTP user and application path used by your deployment. Containers, packages, Snaps and virtual machines normally provide their own command or service wrapper; use that method instead of copying an archive command into a different installation type.

3. Replace the application code while preserving configuration and data
For an archive-style installation, keep config/config.php and the entire data directory in place, preserve the old application tree, and replace the ownCloud code with the compatible Nextcloud code. Do not overwrite the data directory with a blank directory and do not discard the original code until the migration is accepted.
Follow the installation-specific update instructions for Docker, Snap, packages and pre-built virtual machines. Windows Server has a documented limitation: migration from Windows Server is not supported beyond moving over the data. Treat that platform as a data move to a supported deployment rather than as a fully supported in-place code conversion.
4. Run the normal Nextcloud upgrade
With the compatible Nextcloud code in place and maintenance mode still enabled, run the upgrade as the web user:
sudo -u www-data php occ upgrade
Use the correct PHP executable, user and path for your system. Monitor the command output and server logs. Do not interrupt a database migration simply because it takes longer than an ordinary app update; large installations may require hours.

Record any error output. A command that fails because of a database permission, schema or connectivity problem should be resolved before users are allowed back in; do not hide the error by deleting tables or manually changing schema objects.
6. Reconcile cron jobs and applications
Review the old crontab. If it used occ system:cron, change it to the PHP command specified by Nextcloud’s configured background-job method, using the correct application path and web user. Confirm that jobs run successfully after maintenance mode is disabled.
Review every app before enabling it. OwnCloud Market applications may be disabled as incompatible. Calendar and Contacts are examples of apps that may need to be re-enabled or replaced with their Nextcloud counterparts. Third-party apps and custom code need individual compatibility checks; do not assume that an app’s ownCloud version will work on the bridge release.

Validate the converted instance before removing the lockout
Keep maintenance mode enabled until the checks below pass. Use representative accounts, not only the administrator account:
- Sign in and sign out through the normal web address.
- Open, upload, rename, move and delete representative files; verify versions and trash where those features are used.
- Test internal shares, public links, shared folders and link permissions.
- Connect a WebDAV client and at least one desktop or mobile sync client, then verify bidirectional changes.
- Authenticate through LDAP and check directory groups, disabled users and permissions.
- Read and write through every external-storage backend.
- Open encrypted files and confirm that encryption keys and user access remain usable.
- Generate previews for common file types and watch for errors in the logs.
- Run background jobs manually or wait for the scheduled job, then confirm that queued work completes.
- Send a test mail notification if mail is configured.
- Review the Security & setup warnings panel and correct actionable warnings.
- Inspect Nextcloud and web-server logs for database, app, PHP and permission errors.
Only after these checks pass should you turn maintenance mode off and invite users back. Continue monitoring synchronization, shares, cron output and logs during the first normal work period.

Move from the bridge release to current Nextcloud
The compatible bridge is an intermediate landing point, not necessarily the final release you want to operate. Use the built-in updater or the update method appropriate to your installation type. Upgrade to the latest point release in the current major version before moving to the next major version, never skip major releases, and run background jobs between major upgrades.
Recheck PHP requirements before every major upgrade. Repeat the same maintenance, backup and validation discipline for each step, and retain the pre-migration ownCloud backup until the final version has been validated in production.
Rollback and failure handling
If the upgrade fails
Leave users locked out, preserve the command output and logs, and identify whether the problem is a compatibility mismatch, PHP requirement, database permission or app incompatibility. Do not delete the old database or application tree while investigating.
If the converted instance must be abandoned
Downgrades are unsupported and an in-place downgrade can corrupt the database. Roll back by restoring the original ownCloud application, configuration, database and data backups, or build a fresh supported installation and restore the data there. Follow the recovery procedure you tested before the migration; do not attempt to make a newer Nextcloud schema run on the old ownCloud code.
If the server is on Windows Server
Use the documented data-move limitation as your decision point. Plan a supported target deployment, move the data, and recreate or verify configuration rather than treating Windows Server as a normal archive replacement.
When to use migration assistance
Nextcloud describes its migration tool as the easiest migration route. It also offers a special ownCloud-to-Nextcloud migration service, free migration support for Enterprise customers, partner assistance and a sales route for custom enterprise migrations. Availability and terms depend on the customer and deployment, so confirm the scope before scheduling a production cutover.

- The exact ownCloud version has a currently documented Nextcloud bridge.
- The target Nextcloud release’s PHP, database and installation requirements are met.
- Configuration, database, complete data and original application code are backed up.
- A separate restore test has demonstrated that recovery works.
- Maintenance time, user communication and a rollback window are scheduled.
- Apps, LDAP, external storage, encryption, shares and cron have owners for post-conversion testing.
- The bridge instance has passed functional and security-warning checks before further major upgrades.
