To convert an image to Base64, encode the image file’s binary bytes, then place the result after the image’s actual media type in a data URL: data:image/png;base64,ENCODED_BYTES. The comma separates the metadata from the payload. Base64 is useful for small images that need to travel inside a document or stylesheet, but it is not a general image-optimization technique.
What an image data URL looks like
A data URL follows this structure: data:[<media-type>][;base64],<data>. For a Base64-encoded image, use the actual media type, the ;base64 marker, a comma, and then the encoded image bytes:
data:image/png;base64,ENCODED_IMAGE_BYTES
The example shows the format, not a valid image payload. Use image/jpeg for a JPEG, image/png for a PNG, or the appropriate type for the image you have. If you leave out the media type, the data URL defaults to text/plain;charset=US-ASCII, which does not correctly label image content. The comma is required: it marks where the encoded data begins. See MDN’s data URL reference and RFC 2397.
How to convert an image to Base64
- Start with the image file. Base64-encode its binary bytes; do not first read or treat arbitrary image bytes as UTF-8 text.
- Encode the bytes. Use an available Base64 encoder. MDN provides examples for the Unix
base64command, PowerShell’sConvert.ToBase64String, and JavaScript’s native Base64 APIs in its data URL documentation. - Identify the real media type. Check the image format rather than assuming it is PNG. The MIME type in the URL should describe the image you encoded.
- Assemble the URL. Add the prefix
data:<media-type>;base64,to the encoded payload. The encoder supplies the Base64 payload; it may not create the full data URL or its MIME-type metadata. - Use and test it. Put the URL where a URL is accepted, such as an image source or a CSS
url(), then check that the image renders as expected.
For example, an HTML image element can use the completed data URL as its src value, and CSS can use one inside url(). The same format applies in either context; only the surrounding syntax changes.

When a Base64 data URL is useful
Data URLs were designed for small inline values. An image embedded this way travels as part of the document or stylesheet instead of being addressed as a separate image resource. That can suit a small, one-off image when a self-contained document or stylesheet is more useful than a separately managed file. RFC 2397 describes the scheme as intended for short values; see RFC 2397.
A normal image URL is usually easier to manage when an image is large, reused in multiple places, or expected to change independently. With a data URL, the encoded content is coupled to the document or stylesheet that contains it. Consider these practical differences before choosing:

USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)

- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
- Size: a small image may be manageable inline; a large payload can make source text unwieldy.
- Reuse: inline content fits a one-off use better than an image shared across pages.
- Updates and caching: a separate image URL lets the asset be addressed and replaced independently; inline content changes along with its containing document or stylesheet.
- Workflow: a data URL makes output self-contained, while a regular image URL keeps source readable and the image independently editable.
- Performance: choose based on measurements of the actual page, browser, and network, not an assumed benefit from avoiding a separate request.
Why Base64 embedding can hurt
Base64 encoding makes the image payload larger than the original binary bytes, and the resulting string can add substantial text to HTML or CSS. Large inline values are harder to read, edit, reuse, and manage than separate image files. Browser support for data URLs does not mean arbitrarily large values are practical or accepted in every application, intermediary, build tool, or document context.
MDN reports implementation limits of 512 MB in Chromium and Firefox, and 2048 MB in Safari (WebKit). These are reported browser ceilings, not recommended image sizes. MDN also notes that browsers are not required to support any particular maximum length. Treat the figures as limits reported by MDN’s HTTP compression guidance, not as targets for inline assets.

The sources do not establish a general performance win or loss for data URLs compared with ordinary image URLs. Avoid assuming that removing a separate request will make a page faster. If speed matters, compare both approaches on the real page and optimize images for the quality required; MDN recommends compressing and optimizing web images in its compression guidance.

Browser, URL, and security considerations
- Do not use ordinary URL query-string assumptions. A data URL has no normal relative URL form, and its data portion is opaque; appending a query string does not create ordinary URL query parameters. See MDN’s data URL reference.
- Do not rely on top-level navigation. Modern browsers treat data URLs as unique opaque origins, and top-level navigation to data URLs is blocked as a security mitigation, according to MDN.
- Validate the final value. Invalid media parameters or a misspelled
base64marker may be ignored without an error. Check the assembled URL and inspect the rendered image rather than assuming a successful encoding guarantees a valid result. - Do not treat encoding as protection. Base64 changes the representation of bytes; it does not make their content safe. The media type still affects how content is interpreted. RFC 2397 advises applications not to interpret content whose media type is disallowed by their configuration.
