Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
You can move a Project Zomboid singleplayer world to a multiplayer server by copying the world folder from Zomboid/Saves/<mode>/ into the server’s Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/ directory, renaming that folder to exactly match the server name, and restarting the server. That transfers the map and world state. It does not automatically transfer your character’s inventory, skills, stats, or position; those records are stored separately in players.db and require a cautious database step.
Stop the server, make a complete backup, confirm the game build and mods, then copy the world. If the folder name and server name differ, the server commonly creates or loads an empty world instead.

A Project Zomboid save is not one universal file. The world folder contains the map state, buildings, containers, discovered areas and other persistent world information. Multiplayer uses a different save location from singleplayer, so the folder must be placed in the multiplayer directory before the server starts.
- World data: Usually transfers when the complete world folder is copied to the correct multiplayer directory.
- Character data: Inventory, skills, statistics and the character’s position do not carry over merely because the world folder was copied.
- Server settings: The server’s own configuration remains in its server configuration files. Review settings and mods separately after the world is in place.
The safest approach is to treat the conversion as two operations: first make the server load the old world, then decide whether to migrate player records from players.db. You can keep the world and deliberately start with a new character if you do not need the old character.

Back up before touching either save
Save conversion is reversible only if you retain an untouched copy. Shut down the game and the server before copying or replacing files; an active server can rewrite the database or world while you are working.
- Exit Project Zomboid on every computer that has the save open.
- Stop the multiplayer server and wait until its control panel or console confirms that the process has stopped.
- Copy the entire
Zomboidfolder to a separate location. A dated archive is useful, for exampleZomboid-backup-2026-10-14. - If the server already contains a multiplayer world you might want to preserve, download that world with FTP, SFTP or the host’s file manager before deleting or replacing anything.
- Keep the original singleplayer folder unchanged. Perform the conversion on a duplicate so a failed attempt does not damage the only copy.
Do not rely on a backup made after the server has already generated a fresh world. That backup may contain the wrong state. Keep both the original singleplayer copy and the server’s pre-conversion copy until you have joined successfully and checked the map.
Find the singleplayer world on your computer
Windows
On Windows, the normal location is %UserProfile%ZomboidSaves<mode><world name>. The mode directory is the mode used when the world was created, such as Sandbox, Survival or Builder. Inside that directory, the final folder is the world name.
You can paste %UserProfile%Zomboid into File Explorer’s address bar. Open Saves, then the mode folder, and identify the world you intend to transfer. Do not copy only a file from inside the folder; copy the complete world directory and its contents.
Linux and macOS
On Linux and macOS, the equivalent user data directory is ~/Zomboid, with the same Saves layout. Look in ~/Zomboid/Saves/<mode>/<world name>. A dedicated Linux installation can use a separate server data root rather than the desktop user’s home directory, so verify the path used by that server instance before uploading.

Understand the server name and folder name
The server name is significant, not cosmetic. Project Zomboid uses the server name to select the server configuration (the corresponding .ini file) and the multiplayer save folder. The world folder you upload must be renamed to that same name.
For example, if the server configuration is servertest.ini, the expected save folder is normally named servertest. If your singleplayer folder is called MyOldWorld, rename the folder itself to servertest before placing it in Saves/Multiplayer. Do not rename individual files inside the world unless a build-specific instruction explicitly requires it.
A mismatch typically produces the most confusing symptom: the server starts normally but presents a new, empty map. In that case, stop the server, check the active server name and its configuration file, and compare the spelling, capitalization and punctuation of the save folder. Remove accidental extra nesting such as Saves/Multiplayer/servertest/MyOldWorld; the world files should be directly inside the folder whose name matches the server.
Choose the correct transfer location
| Server type | Where you work | Typical tools | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed host | The provider’s server data directory, usually the instance’s Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer |
Web file manager, FTP or SFTP | Confirm the panel’s actual server name and stop the instance before uploading |
| Self-hosted desktop or dedicated server | The Zomboid directory used by that server process |
Local file copy, shell, FTP or SFTP | Do not confuse your personal desktop save directory with the dedicated server’s data directory |
| Dedicated Linux example | /home/Zomboid/Server/Saves/Multiplayer |
SSH, SFTP or a file manager | The server configuration example is /home/Zomboid/Server/servertest.ini; use your installation’s actual root if different |
Managed panels often show a shorter path or hide the parent directory. Navigate by locating the server’s existing Saves/Multiplayer folder rather than guessing from a tutorial written for another host. On a self-hosted installation, identify the account and working directory used to launch the server; copying into your desktop account’s ~/Zomboid will not help if the dedicated process reads another location.
Step-by-step: copy the world to multiplayer
- Locate the source folder. Open
Zomboid/Saves/<mode>/and select the complete singleplayer world folder. - Stop all processes. Close the game and stop the server. Wait for the server files to finish writing.
- Create backups. Archive the complete local
Zomboiddirectory and download the server’s existing world if it matters. - Confirm the destination. Find the server’s
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayerdirectory. On a dedicated Linux example, this is/home/Zomboid/Server/Saves/Multiplayer. - Check the server name. Open the server configuration directory, commonly
ZomboidServeron Windows, and identify the active file such asservertest.ini. The name before.iniis the name the save folder normally needs. - Rename the copy. Rename the duplicated singleplayer world folder to the server name, for example from
MyOldWorldtoservertest. Preserve the original folder under its old name in your backup. - Remove or move the destination world. If a world with that server name already exists and you intend to replace it, move it outside the active save directory instead of deleting it immediately. This gives you a rollback copy.
- Upload or copy the folder. Use the host’s file manager, FTP, SFTP or a local copy operation. Upload the folder itself so the destination becomes
Saves/Multiplayer/servertest/, not a second nested directory. - Check ownership and permissions. On a self-hosted Linux server, the account running Project Zomboid must be able to read and write the uploaded files. A permission error can look like a missing save.
- Start the server once. Let it finish loading without joining immediately. Watch the console or panel for errors, then connect and inspect a familiar location.
- Verify the world. Check that buildings, containers, roads, explored areas and other recognizable changes from singleplayer are present. If the map is empty or newly generated, stop the server and revisit the name and path checks rather than continuing to play.
Move your character with players.db
The world copy does not include the multiplayer character record. Character inventory, stats and position are stored in players.db, an SQLite database. Simply replacing or deleting that file can reset player data, so handle it independently from the world folder.

What the cautious conversion method does
Community guides describe a staged method that preserves the server-generated database structure:
- Keep the existing database. Back up the server’s current
players.dbbefore changing it. Do not overwrite the only copy with the singleplayer file. - Let the server create its multiplayer database. Start the converted world and join briefly using the account or player identity that should receive the character. This creates the multiplayer-side character row and any records the current build expects.
- Stop the server cleanly. Exit the game, stop the server and wait for the process to release the database file. SQLite edits made while the server is running can be incomplete or locked.
- Open the database with an SQLite tool. Guides commonly use DB Browser for SQLite. Work on a duplicate of the database, not the live file, and keep the original server-generated copy available.
- Copy the appropriate player rows. Transfer the old character’s records into the newly generated multiplayer database, matching them to the new multiplayer player identity. The exact rows and relationships are build-dependent; inspect the schema in your version rather than assuming a table layout from an older guide.
- Replace only after validation. Save the edited duplicate, retain the untouched databases, put the validated file in the server’s save directory and start the server. Join and verify inventory, skills, statistics and position.
This is database editing, not a simple file rename. A row copied to the wrong player identity can produce a new character with no items, while a malformed edit can prevent the server from reading the database. If preserving the old character is less important than a reliable launch, leave the newly generated database in place and start with a fresh multiplayer character.
What happens if you delete players.db
Deleting players.db resets player data. It may be useful when you intentionally want every player to start over, but it is not a conversion method and should never be used before making a backup. The map can remain intact while all character records are lost.
Synchronize mods before players join
A singleplayer mod list is not automatically a valid server mod list. Some mods are singleplayer-only and may fail, behave differently or prevent a server from loading correctly.

Mods=lists the mod identifiers enabled by the server.WorkshopItems=lists the corresponding Steam Workshop IDs the server should obtain.
Enable the server-compatible versions of the mods the world requires, and remove or replace singleplayer-only mods. Have every player use the same required mod set. If the server starts but objects are missing, recipes disappear or clients are disconnected during loading, test with a copy of the world and a minimal, known-compatible mod list. Do not permanently alter the only backup while troubleshooting.
Build and file-name compatibility
Older saves can be buggy on newer game builds, according to community reports. A world created on an earlier build may load with warnings, missing behavior or other inconsistencies after an update. The safest test is to make the conversion on the same build used to create the world, then update only after a verified backup.
File names and map-tracking details can also change between builds. One older guide mentions a map_visited_server folder replacing map_visited.bin; that specific arrangement has not been verified for build 42. Do not delete, rename or manufacture either form solely because an older tutorial shows it. Copy the complete world as-is and let the current build determine which files it recognizes.

The server loads a blank or newly generated map
- Confirm the folder is directly under
Saves/Multiplayer. - Compare the folder name with the active server name and the corresponding
.inifile, including capitalization and punctuation. - Check that the server is reading the data directory you edited, especially on a dedicated machine with multiple user accounts.
- Stop the server, move the newly generated empty folder out of the way, restore the correctly named world and restart.
The world loads but the character is new
This is expected when only the world folder was copied. Verify that the multiplayer players.db was generated, then decide whether to perform the staged SQLite row transfer. Do not delete the database hoping the old character will appear; deletion resets player data.

A plain copy-and-paste did not work
At least one forum report describes a folder copy that failed. Recheck the destination, nesting level, server name, file permissions and server shutdown state. A copy made while the server was running may be incomplete, and a host panel may have uploaded the folder to a home directory rather than the instance’s active save path.
Mods cause errors or missing content
Compare both Mods= and WorkshopItems= in the server configuration. Temporarily test a backup copy with nonessential or singleplayer-only mods removed. Add compatible mods back one at a time so the failing item is identifiable.
The database cannot be opened or the server will not start after editing
Stop the server, restore the untouched players.db backup and test the world without character migration. If that restores operation, the database edit—not the world conversion—caused the failure. Rework the edit on a duplicate and match the current build’s schema, or accept a fresh character.
Managed hosting versus a self-hosted server
The world-conversion logic is the same, but the file workflow differs. A managed service usually exposes a web file manager or FTP/SFTP credentials; a self-hosted server gives you direct access to the machine and its process account.
| Decision | Managed hosting upload | Self-hosted dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Finding the files | Use the panel’s displayed instance path and locate Saves/Multiplayer |
Identify the data directory and account used by the server process |
| Replacing a world | Stop the instance, download the old save, then upload the renamed folder | Stop the service, copy the old directory locally, then move the renamed folder into place |
| Database access | Download and re-upload players.db through the panel or SFTP |
Edit a local duplicate over SSH or after copying the file to a workstation |
| Common mistake | Uploading into the account’s home directory instead of the active server directory | Editing ~/Zomboid while the dedicated process reads another root |
For either route, the server must be stopped during replacement and restarted afterward. Hosting support can identify the instance’s real data path, but they cannot safely reconstruct character records that were never backed up.
Final verification checklist
- The original singleplayer
Zomboidfolder is archived. - The server’s previous multiplayer world is downloaded or moved aside.
- The copied world is directly under
Saves/Multiplayer. - The copied folder name exactly matches the server name and active
.inifile. - The server starts on the intended game build.
- The map contains recognizable singleplayer changes.
- The server’s
Mods=andWorkshopItems=entries match compatible mods. - The original and generated
players.dbfiles are backed up before any SQLite edit. - Character inventory, skills, statistics and position have been checked separately from world data.
Bottom line
Copy the complete singleplayer world into Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer, rename it to the exact server name, and restart the server. That handles the world. Handle players.db separately if you need the old character, and always back up before replacing files or editing SQLite. Correct naming, the real server data path, compatible mods and matching builds determine whether the converted world appears instead of a fresh one.
