To convert a pre-26.1 Spigot-family world to a vanilla Minecraft Java server, stop the server, make a complete backup, move world_nether/DIM-1 into world/DIM-1, move world_the_end/DIM1 into world/DIM1, remove the now-empty sibling folders, and then start the vanilla server jar. Spigot, Paper, and Purpur keep dimensions in sibling folders; vanilla expects the Nether and End inside the main world folder. If your save uses the newer 26.1 dimensions/ layout, inspect the actual folders first rather than applying the older instructions unchanged.
What changes when you move from Spigot to vanilla
A Spigot-family server and a vanilla Java server can use the same Minecraft world data, but they do not always arrange dimension data in the same directories. Before Minecraft 26.1, the usual Spigot-family arrangement is:
world/— Overworld dataworld_nether/DIM-1/— Nether dataworld_the_end/DIM1/— End data
Vanilla expects the dimensions inside the main world directory:
world/region/— Overworld chunksworld/DIM-1/region/— Nether chunksworld/DIM1/region/— End chunks
If you start vanilla without correcting the layout, the Overworld may appear normal while Nether or End progress seems to have disappeared. The buildings have not necessarily been deleted; the vanilla server is looking in different paths.

Confirm that this guide matches your server
This procedure is for Minecraft Java Edition worlds produced by Spigot-family servers, including Spigot, Paper, and Purpur. It concerns the world folders themselves, not plugin configuration or a conversion of server software.
Find the directory that contains your main world folder. The examples below call it world, but a server can use a different world-folder name. Use the name that actually contains your Overworld region directory, and substitute it consistently in every command.

A save upgraded from an older Minecraft release may retain its older directory structure. Do not rename folders solely because the server version is new. Open the save and identify whether it contains DIM-1 and DIM1, a dimensions/ directory, or both. The layout present in the save and the layout expected by the vanilla jar you are about to run determine the correct destination.
Back up everything before moving a folder
Stop the Spigot-family server before copying, moving, or deleting anything. A running server can still be writing region, entity, or point-of-interest files, leaving a partial transfer.
- Use the server console or hosting panel’s normal stop control and wait until the process has completely exited.
- Copy the entire server directory to a separate location. Include the world folder,
world_nether,world_the_end, and any other server files. - Give the backup a date or versioned name so you can identify it if a rollback is required.
- Do not work on the only copy. Perform the conversion on the live directory only after the backup is complete.
A complete backup matters because a mistaken folder level can make a dimension look empty, and deleting a dimension’s region directory removes the saved chunks, structures, and mobs for that dimension.

world_nether/DIM-1/region
world_the_end/DIM1/region
The dimension directory can also contain entities and poi. Those directories belong with the dimension and should move along with region; do not copy only chunks unless you deliberately choose the region-only alternative described later.
2. Move the Nether into the main world
Move the entire DIM-1 directory from world_nether into the main world directory. The final path must be world/DIM-1, not world/world_nether/DIM-1 and not world/DIM-1/DIM-1.
On Linux or another Unix-like shell, from the server directory, the command is:
mv world_nether/DIM-1 world/DIM-1
In Windows PowerShell, the equivalent is:
Move-Item .world_netherDIM-1 .worldDIM-1
If world/DIM-1 already exists, stop and investigate rather than overwriting it. It may contain a vanilla Nether, a previous partial conversion, or unrelated data. Compare the backups and decide which copy is authoritative before merging or replacing anything.

Move world_the_end/DIM1 into world/DIM1:
mv world_the_end/DIM1 world/DIM1
PowerShell:
Move-Item .world_the_endDIM1 .worldDIM1
As with the Nether, preserve the complete dimension directory, including any entities and poi subdirectories. The spelling and capitalization matter: the pre-26.1 vanilla names are exactly DIM-1 and DIM1.
4. Remove only the emptied sibling folders
After confirming that both moves completed successfully, check that world_nether and world_the_end contain nothing you still need. Remove those now-empty directories; do not remove the newly moved world/DIM-1 or world/DIM1.

If a directory is not empty, do not force-delete it. List its contents and determine whether an overlooked dimension directory or another file still needs to be retained.
5. Start vanilla and verify both dimensions
Replace the server launch target with the vanilla server jar for the Minecraft version you intend to run, then start it while the server directory contains the converted world. Watch the startup log for errors and enter the Nether and End in-game.
- Check a familiar Nether location, such as a base, tunnel, portal destination, or fortress.
- Check a known End location, including the main island, an End city, or a previously built farm.
- Confirm that structures, terrain, containers, entities, and points of interest are present where expected.
- Stop the server again if anything is missing and compare the live folders with the untouched backup before making further changes.
Transfer only the Nether or only the End
You do not have to transfer every dimension. A selective transfer is useful when you want to keep a vanilla Overworld but preserve a Spigot Nether, or when only one dimension contains builds worth retaining.
Nether-only transfer
- Stop the server and make the full backup.
- Move or copy
world_nether/DIM-1to the target world’sDIM-1path. - Keep the target world’s existing Overworld and End untouched.
- Start vanilla and verify Nether locations before deleting any source copy.
End-only transfer
- Stop the server and back up the complete directory.
- Move or copy
world_the_end/DIM1to the target world’sDIM1path. - Leave the target Overworld and Nether in place.
- Start vanilla and check the main island and a known End build.
Region-folder-only alternative
Some hosting instructions recommend copying only the source dimension’s region directory into the matching vanilla dimension directory instead of replacing the entire directory. This preserves chunk terrain and structures while leaving destination-side files in place, but it does not transfer every kind of dimension data. If you use this method, retain the full backup and understand that entities and poi data are not being transferred with the region files.
What to do with a 26.1-and-later save
Minecraft 26.1 changed the default vanilla arrangement to a dimensions directory with these paths:
dimensions/minecraft/overworld
dimensions/minecraft/the_nether
dimensions/minecraft/the_end
The older references to world/DIM-1 and world/DIM1 should not be applied blindly to a 26.1 target. Directory references for this transition are not fully consistent, and a world upgraded from an older release may still retain the old layout.

Use this decision process:
- Stop the source server and make the complete backup.
- Inspect the source save for its actual dimension directories.
- Generate or inspect a world with the exact vanilla 26.1 server jar you will run, if you need to establish the target layout. Record the paths it creates.
- Place each source dimension’s data in the corresponding target dimension path, preserving the directory contents and names required by that target.
- Do not delete the original sibling folders until vanilla has loaded every required dimension successfully.
If the target jar uses the 26.1 dimensions/minecraft/ tree but the source still has Spigot’s sibling folders, treat the target-generated directory tree as authoritative. If you cannot identify an unambiguous one-to-one destination, keep the backup and test on a duplicate copy rather than guessing.
Understand region files before troubleshooting
Minecraft stores chunk regions in files named with the pattern r.x.z.mca. A dimension’s region directory is therefore the key evidence that its terrain exists on disk. For example, a pre-26.1 Nether should contain files under world/DIM-1/region after conversion.
Never delete a dimension’s region directory as a way to “make vanilla regenerate it” unless you intentionally want to reset that dimension. Removing it resets the saved terrain, buildings, and mobs represented by those chunks. Restore the backup instead if the destination is wrong.

Troubleshoot a missing Nether or End
The dimension loads as a fresh world
Stop the server and inspect the destination path. The most common structural mistakes are an extra nesting level, a misspelled folder name, or a dimension left in its original sibling folder. For the older layout, the expected paths are exactly world/DIM-1/region and world/DIM1/region.
Compare the destination’s region files with the backup. If the files exist in the backup but not in the path vanilla reads, move the complete dimension directory into the correct location and start again.
The Nether works but mobs, portals, or points of interest differ
Check whether you copied only region. A region-only transfer moves chunk terrain and structures but omits other dimension subdirectories. If the source has entities or poi, repeat the conversion on a duplicate using the complete DIM-1 or DIM1 directory, then test that copy.

The End is missing while the Nether is present
Treat each dimension independently. Confirm that world/DIM1/region exists for the older layout and that the source world_the_end/DIM1 was moved, not the Nether’s DIM-1. A successful Nether transfer does not prove that the End directory was handled correctly.
You already deleted a folder
Stop the vanilla server, restore the entire server directory from the backup, and repeat the transfer carefully. Do not attempt to reconstruct a deleted region directory by starting the server again; the server can generate a new empty dimension, which makes the original data harder to distinguish from the replacement.
Plugin files and server settings
Vanilla does not load Bukkit-family plugins. Plugin configuration files, databases, and plugin-specific folders are therefore generally left unused after the software switch; they are not automatically converted into vanilla features.
Do not mass-delete those files as part of the world move. The available conversion procedure does not establish what every plugin stores or whether a particular plugin’s data can be reused. Keep the backup and consult the documentation for each plugin before removing its folders or attempting to migrate its data. World data and plugin data are separate decisions.
Final conversion checklist
- The original server was stopped cleanly.
- A separate backup contains the entire server directory.
- The save’s actual layout was checked instead of assumed.
- For the pre-26.1 layout, Nether data is at
world/DIM-1and End data atworld/DIM1. region, entities, andpoimoved with each complete dimension directory when a full transfer was intended.- Only empty
world_netherandworld_the_endfolders were removed. - The vanilla jar matches the intended Minecraft version.
- The Nether and End were entered and checked after startup.
- The backup remains available until the converted server has been thoroughly tested.
Bottom line
For the traditional pre-26.1 layout, converting a Spigot world is a folder relocation, not a chunk conversion: move world_nether/DIM-1 and world_the_end/DIM1 into the main world, preserve their contents, and then start vanilla. The safest workflow is always stop, back up, inspect the real layout, move the dimensions, verify in-game, and keep the backup until every dimension loads correctly.
