Use Chunker’s desktop converter. First export your Bedrock world as a .mcworld file, keep an untouched backup, import the export into Chunker, select the Java Edition version you will use, and then inspect the converted save in Java. There is no built-in Mojang or Microsoft menu command that performs this conversion for you.
The conversion preserves much of the terrain and world data, but it is not a perfect clone. Blocks, biomes, many settings, containers, items, dimensions and maps are reported to transfer. Mobs, villagers, player inventories and several structure or entity types are not dependable conversion targets, while mods and pack files do not carry over. Plan for a verification pass and manual repairs.
What a Bedrock-to-Java conversion actually does
Bedrock Edition and Java Edition store worlds differently. A converter reads the Bedrock save, translates data into Java’s format and writes a separate Java world. It does not create a live link between editions, and changes made afterward in one edition will not synchronize to the other.
Chunker is the main desktop route. It is an open-source tool associated with Hive Games and distributed through its GitHub releases. Use the desktop application rather than an unofficial mirror. A web workflow is not a dependable choice: one guide reports that Chunker’s web version was retired at the end of 2024, while other pages still describe chunker.app. The desktop release avoids that unresolved status.

No published, authoritative success-rate statistic was found for these conversions. Treat the result as a new working copy, not as a guaranteed, lossless migration.

What is unreliable or unsupported

Prepare the Bedrock world before exporting
Preparation determines whether you can recover from a bad setting or an incomplete output. Do not convert the only copy of a world.
- Close Minecraft on every device that could still be writing to the world.
- Make a separate backup of the Bedrock world and keep it untouched. Store it somewhere outside the folder you will use for conversion.
- Move irreplaceable items from player inventories into clearly labelled chests. After conversion, check those chests rather than relying on inventory transfer.
- Write down coordinates for bases, farms, portals, museums and other builds you must inspect. Screenshots are useful for redstone layouts and entity displays.
- Note which dimensions contain important work. You will choose dimensions in Chunker, and excluding one removes its data from the output.
- If the world uses packs, mods or behaviour files, make a separate list of them. The converter does not turn those Bedrock files into Java mods or packs.
Export the world as a .mcworld file
Chunker needs an exported Bedrock world. The exact export control is available in Bedrock’s world-edit screen.
- Start Bedrock Edition and open the world list.
- Find the world you want to move and select the Edit pencil beside it. Do not open the world itself for this step.
- Scroll to the bottom of the settings page.
- Select Export World.
- Choose a local destination and let Minecraft finish writing the
.mcworldfile. - Copy that file to a working folder, while preserving the original export and the original Bedrock backup.
A .mcworld file is the portable Bedrock package Chunker imports. Do not overwrite it with a converted output, and do not test experimental settings against your only export.

Install the desktop Chunker converter
- Download Chunker from the Hive Games GitHub releases page. Use the release appropriate for your desktop operating system.
- Avoid third-party mirrors and repackaged downloads. They are not the official distribution route and make it harder to verify what you installed.
- Install or launch the application, then keep the exported
.mcworldand a destination with enough free space available. - If the application offers an import-file dialog, choose the exported
.mcworld. If it asks you to select a world folder instead, extract the package only as directed by the application; do not edit files inside it casually.
Chunker is described in the available guidance as free and open source. Its current release number and the complete list of Java versions it supports were not established, so use the version selector in the application rather than assuming it supports every current Java release.
Convert the world in Chunker
Use this sequence for a normal Bedrock world. Names can vary slightly between releases, but the decisions are the same.

.mcworldexport and wait for Chunker to read it. Large worlds can take time to analyse; do not force-close the program while it is reading. - Choose Java Edition as the output. Confirm that the output format is Java, not another Bedrock export or an intermediate format.
- Select the Java version. Pick the Java version you will use to open the save. Matching the converter’s target to the installed game version reduces the chance of a version warning or an unreadable save. The currently supported version list is not fixed here, so follow the choices shown by your installed release.
- Review level settings. Chunker maps Bedrock difficulty, game mode and game rules to Java equivalents where a meaningful equivalent exists. Read each setting instead of accepting a default that could change how the world behaves.
- Choose dimensions. Include the Overworld and any other dimension that contains work. Setting a dimension to none excludes it and removes that dimension’s data from the converted world. This is destructive for the output, so stop and change the selection if a required dimension is marked none.
- Start the conversion. Select the conversion command and choose a new output directory. Never point the output at your Bedrock backup or at an existing Java save.
- Wait for completion. Keep the completion message or output location. If the program reports an error, retain the original export and read the error before attempting another run.
Settings that deserve extra attention
Game mode and difficulty: Bedrock values do not always have identical Java behavior. Verify the result in Java rather than assuming that a label means exactly the same mechanics.
Game rules: Rules that exist in both editions can be mapped, while edition-specific rules may be skipped or altered. Record any rule that matters to a farm or challenge before conversion and test it afterward.

Dimensions: The dimension selector is an inclusion list, not a preview. A dimension set to none is intentionally left out. If you are unsure, include it; you can make a smaller test conversion later.
Put the converted save into Java Edition
Chunker’s output is a Java world folder. Java must be able to see that folder as a save, not as a second folder nested inside another save.
- Finish the conversion and locate the output directory shown by Chunker.
- If the output is compressed, extract it once. The folder you place in Java’s saves location should contain the world files directly, rather than another folder containing them.
- Close Java Edition before copying the folder. This prevents the game from caching the old save list.
- Copy the converted folder into the saves directory for the Java installation you intend to use. The default location is inside the Minecraft directory’s
savesfolder; on macOS it is commonly underLibrary/Application Support/minecraft/saves, and on Linux under.minecraft/saves. Custom launcher instances can use a different game directory. - Start the same Java version selected in Chunker and open Singleplayer. The converted world should appear in the list.
- If Java displays a warning about opening the world in a different version, stop and make another backup before accepting it. A version upgrade can be one-way.
Verify the conversion before playing normally
Use the coordinates you recorded during preparation and perform a deliberate inspection. A world that loads to the title screen can still have missing data.
- Load the world and visit the main base, storage area and the most valuable build.
- Open every important chest, furnace, hopper, brewing stand and other container. Confirm that critical items and quantities are present.
- Enter each dimension you selected. Check a portal or other known landmark in every included dimension.
- Inspect biome boundaries, terrain cuts, farms and decorative details for unexpected block changes.
- Open several in-game maps and compare their explored regions with your notes.
- Test redstone clocks, pistons, observers, doors, farms and command blocks individually. Rebuild or rewrite mechanisms that no longer behave correctly.
- Check villagers, animals, armour stands and other displays. If an entity is absent or changed, restore it manually from your notes or screenshots.
- Review difficulty, game mode and game rules in the Java world before inviting other players.
Keep the Bedrock backup until you have completed this inspection and are satisfied that the Java copy is usable. There is no benefit in deleting your recovery copy early.

Common problems and fixes
The world will not import
Confirm that you exported the world from the Bedrock Edit screen and that the file still ends in .mcworld. Re-export from the untouched Bedrock copy if the file is incomplete. Avoid renaming a different archive to look like a Minecraft world package.
The converted world is missing from Java’s list
Check that you copied the actual world folder into the active Java installation’s saves directory. A frequent folder mistake is saves/ConvertedWorld/ConvertedWorld/; Java needs the folder that contains the save files, not the outer wrapper. Custom launchers may point to a different game directory than the default installation.

Run the conversion again and inspect the dimension choices before starting. A dimension set to none is intentionally excluded, and its data is not present in that output. Use the original export or Bedrock backup as the source for the corrected run.
Items or a player inventory are empty
Use the pre-conversion chests as the recovery point. Player inventories are not a dependable transfer target, which is why valuable items should be stored in containers before export. Do not overwrite the original Bedrock world while investigating.

Villagers, animals or armour stands disappeared
This is an entity-conversion limitation rather than evidence that the terrain conversion failed. Recreate the affected entities in Java using your coordinate notes and screenshots. Villages and strongholds also require special inspection because their support is limited.
Redstone or commands behave differently
Test one mechanism at a time. Bedrock and Java use different redstone timing, command syntax and behavior for some blocks. Adjust the circuit or command manually, and keep the original Bedrock version available as a reference.

Packs or mods are gone
That is expected. Resource packs, behaviour packs, data packs and mods are not translated into Java equivalents. Find Java-compatible replacements separately and install them only after the unmodified converted world opens correctly.
The output appears damaged
Do not continue experimenting on that copy. Close Java, move the output aside, restore the untouched export or backup, and run a fresh conversion with conservative settings. If the same source repeatedly fails, test a smaller copy of the world to identify whether a particular area or setting is responsible.

For a normal personal world, starting with the desktop Chunker workflow is the least ambiguous choice. Use an alternative when a specific feature or an unusually complex repair task justifies the additional compatibility and privacy checks.
