Use WhatsApp’s privacy controls to choose who can see your profile photo, About text, last seen, online indicator and Status. Open Settings > Privacy for profile and activity details, then open Status privacy to choose the audience for a new Status. The exact labels can vary slightly between Android, iPhone and app versions, so follow the matching control on your current Privacy screen.
The most important limitation is timing: changing an audience does not change a Status that is already posted. Set the audience before publishing, and check mentions and group sharing because they can expose a Status beyond the audience you selected.
What each WhatsApp privacy control actually changes
WhatsApp separates profile details, activity indicators and Status updates. The controls are not interchangeable: a setting that hides your profile photo does not automatically hide your Status, and a Status audience does not change who can see your About text.

WhatsApp documents these controls in How to change your privacy settings and How to manage status privacy. Menu names can change with an update, but the relevant Privacy or Status privacy entry is the setting to use.

How to hide or limit your profile photo and About text
Open the individual audience control
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings. On some Android versions, tap the three-dot menu first; on iPhone, Settings is a tab.
- Tap Privacy.
- Choose Profile photo or About.
- Select the audience you want: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… or Nobody.
- If you selected My contacts except…, select the people to exclude and confirm. If you selected Nobody, no WhatsApp user should see that field through your profile.
Repeat the process for the other item. These are separate controls, so hiding your photo does not hide your About text automatically. The “Everyone” option is broader than your address book; use “My contacts” when you only want people saved in your phone to see the information.
Use exclusions when the list is mostly acceptable
My contacts except… is useful when nearly all saved contacts may see the item but one or two should not. It avoids rebuilding an allow-list every time your contacts change. Review the exception list after adding or removing contacts, because the setting is based on the contacts WhatsApp recognizes at that time.
Choose the narrowest setting that fits the purpose
Use Everyone only when discoverability is intentional, such as a public-facing business identity. My contacts is a practical default for personal use, but remember that it includes every saved contact you have not excluded. Nobody is the clearest choice when the field should not be visible at all. If only one detail is sensitive, restrict that detail rather than assuming a single switch protects your whole profile.

Change the activity controls
- Open Settings > Privacy.
- Tap Last seen and online, or the equivalent Last seen and Online entries shown by your version.
- Choose the most restrictive audience available for Last seen.
- Review the separate Online control and choose its audience deliberately.
WhatsApp’s official guidance notes a reciprocity rule: when you hide your last seen or online status, you cannot see other users’ last seen or online information either. This is not a one-way viewing feature.
There is also a qualification on the broadest setting. Even when Last seen or Online is set to Everyone, WhatsApp says visibility is limited to people you have called or messaged before, or people saved as contacts. Treat the label as the broadest available audience, not a promise that every WhatsApp account can automatically see the indicator.
Can you hide last seen but stay online?
Last seen and online are separate privacy decisions. Hiding Last seen does not by itself tell WhatsApp what to do with the live Online indicator. Open both controls and check the current selection. If Online remains visible to an audience, people in that audience may still see that you are online even though your last-seen time is hidden.

Why the indicators may look inconsistent
A contact can disappear from your Last seen list because they changed their setting, because you changed yours, or because the broadest visibility rule does not include that interaction. Missing information is not proof that the person has blocked you. Likewise, seeing an online indicator does not reveal what the person is doing in a particular chat; it only reflects the visibility setting and WhatsApp’s current presence handling.

Set the audience before posting
- Go to Settings > Privacy.
- Tap Status or Status privacy.
- Select one of the three documented audiences:

WhatsApp says Status is shared with all contacts by default and explicitly states, “You can’t set status privacy to Everyone.” That means Status is narrower than profile-photo or About controls: you cannot create a public-to-everyone Status audience through this setting.
Confirm the audience when the post is important
After selecting an audience, return to the Status composer and check the audience indicator if your version shows one. Then publish the update. Make the selection before posting: WhatsApp says, “Changes to your privacy settings won’t affect any status you’ve already shared,” as documented in its Status privacy help article.
Use a repeatable posting routine
For sensitive updates, pause before tapping Send. First choose the audience, then scan the selected or excluded names, remove any mention that would expand access, and confirm that the destination is your personal Status rather than a group. This short routine prevents the most common audience mistakes, especially when you alternate between a broad update and a small announcement.
Why someone outside your Status audience might still see it
Status mentions can override the selected audience
If you mention a person in a Status, that person can see the Status even when they are not in the audience you selected. WhatsApp’s wording is direct: “They can see your status, even if they aren’t in your status audience.” A mentioned recipient may also reshare the content to their own audience. Avoid mentioning someone when the post must remain confined to your selected list. Details are in About status mentions.
Group-posted Status is visible to the whole group
A Status posted to a group is visible to all members of that group regardless of your Status privacy selection. If the content must be limited to named individuals, use Only share with… and do not post it to a group. Check the group membership before sharing anything sensitive.

An audience change cannot retract an old Status
If an update was posted with the wrong audience, changing Status privacy only affects later updates. The existing post remains governed by its original sharing circumstances until it expires. Delete the existing Status if you need to stop presenting it through your own Status, then choose the correct audience before posting again; deletion cannot undo screenshots, copies or reshares already made.
Read receipts and seeing who viewed your Status
Read receipts affect Status view information as well as chat indicators. If you turn off read receipts, you cannot see who viewed your Status. If another contact has turned off read receipts, you cannot tell from your viewer information whether that person viewed it.
WhatsApp states that read receipts are always sent for group chats. Therefore, the group-chat exception does not turn off every receipt in every context; it specifically limits what the read-receipt switch can change in group conversations. Read-receipt behavior and Status-view behavior are separate from the audience choice itself.

The viewer list is incomplete by design when read receipts are disabled. An absent name does not prove that the person lacked access, and a visible name does not mean they can see future Status updates. Use Status privacy to control the next post; use the viewer list only as a limited indication of past views.
When blocking is the right control for one person
Use blocking when you need to cut off a specific account rather than merely exclude it from a profile field or future Status. WhatsApp says blocking hides your last seen, online indicator, Status updates and profile-photo changes from the blocked user.
What blocking does not do
- It does not remove either person from a shared WhatsApp group. The blocked user can still encounter your activity inside that group.
- A Status posted before the block may remain visible to that person until it expires.
- It does not erase material the person already copied, photographed or recorded.

What privacy settings cannot prevent
Recipients can copy what they are allowed to access
Audience controls govern access inside WhatsApp; they cannot guarantee that a recipient will keep the material private. WhatsApp warns that users may take screenshots of messages or record calls and share them. Treat a Status, profile image or About text as distributable once another person can view it.
Profile-photo screenshot blocking is limited
WhatsApp says it blocks profile-photo screenshots on supported Android and iOS versions, and that this protection cannot be disabled. Support is platform-dependent, so do not treat it as a universal safeguard or assume it protects Status images, chats or copies made with another device. Defaults, contacts and your phone number
WhatsApp’s Help Center describes defaults that can include a profile photo visible to any user, Status/About/links and last seen visible to contacts, and read receipts and online visible to any user. Defaults and labels can change between releases, accounts and platforms. Open your own Privacy screen and verify each item instead of assuming the documented default still applies to your account.
These controls do not hide the phone number used for WhatsApp. WhatsApp’s privacy guidance says the service does not provide a way to hide that number while using WhatsApp. Profile and Status audience settings should therefore not be treated as phone-number anonymity.
A practical privacy setup for common situations
Keep most contacts, exclude a few
- Profile photo: choose My contacts except… and select the exceptions.
- About: apply the same exclusion only if the text is also sensitive.
- Status: choose My contacts except… before each type of update that should omit those people.
- Check mentions and groups before posting.
Share a Status with a small, named group
- Open Status privacy and choose Only share with….
- Select each intended recipient and confirm the list.
- Do not mention people outside that list.
- Do not post the update to a group whose membership is broader than the list.
- Publish only after verifying the audience, because later privacy changes do not rewrite an existing Status.
Make your profile minimally discoverable
- Set Profile photo and About to My contacts, My contacts except… or Nobody, depending on how much you want to reveal.
- Restrict Last seen and review Online separately.
- Remember that blocking is the stronger per-person action when one account must not see your updates.
Separate personal and work audiences
If your contact list mixes family, colleagues and public-facing contacts, use Status exclusions for routine personal updates and an allow-list for confidential announcements. Keep the profile photo and About setting independent: a work-appropriate About line may be safe for contacts who should not receive a personal Status. Revisit the lists when contacts change roles or phone numbers.

A pre-publish privacy checklist
- Identify the material. Decide whether it is a profile field, activity indicator or Status.
- Pick the audience. Use an allow-list for confidential information and an exclusion list for ordinary updates with a few exceptions.
- Inspect names. Scroll through the selected or excluded contacts rather than relying on memory.
- Remove risky mentions. A mention can grant access outside the normal Status audience.
- Check the destination. A group post follows group visibility, not your ordinary Status list.
- Publish only after checking. A later settings change cannot rewrite an already shared Status.
Troubleshooting when a person can still see something
- Identify the content. Profile photo, About, Last seen, Online and Status use different controls.
- Check the current audience. Reopen Settings > Privacy and verify the exact item, including exception or selected-contact lists.
- Check timing. If it is an existing Status, a newly restrictive setting does not alter that post.
- Check mentions. A mentioned person may be outside the ordinary Status audience.
- Check groups. A group-posted Status is visible to all group members.
- Check read receipts. Viewer information may be incomplete when you or the other person has disabled read receipts.
- Use blocking for a specific account. Confirm that you and the person are not relying on a shared group for privacy.
- Update your expectation. A recipient may have copied or recorded content that WhatsApp can no longer retract.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I hide my WhatsApp profile picture from one person?
Open Settings > Privacy > Profile photo, choose My contacts except…, select that person and confirm. If the photo should be hidden from everyone, choose Nobody instead. This changes only the profile photo, not your About text or Status.
Can I share a WhatsApp Status with only certain contacts?
Yes. Open Settings > Privacy > Status (or Status privacy), choose Only share with…, select the contacts and publish after checking the list. Do not mention people outside it or post the update to a broader group.
Can I hide my last seen but stay online?
Last seen and Online are separate controls. Hide Last seen, then open the Online control and choose its audience separately. Anyone included in the Online audience may still see that you are online.
Why can someone see a Status after I excluded them?
They may have been mentioned, may belong to a group where the Status was posted, or may be viewing a Status shared before you changed the setting. Privacy changes apply to future updates, not an existing post.
Does blocking remove someone from a shared WhatsApp group?
No. Blocking hides your last seen, online indicator, Status updates and profile-photo changes from that account, but neither person is removed from a shared group. Activity posted in that group can still be visible.
Can I see who viewed my Status if read receipts are off?
No. Turning off read receipts prevents you from seeing who viewed your Status. A contact who disabled read receipts may also be absent from your viewer information. Group-chat receipts remain an exception.
Does WhatsApp Status have an Everyone option?
No. WhatsApp documents only My contacts, My contacts except… and Only share with… for Status. The profile-photo and About controls can offer an Everyone choice, but Status cannot be made public to every WhatsApp user through this setting.

Can WhatsApp privacy settings hide my phone number?
No. WhatsApp’s privacy guidance says the phone number used for the service cannot be hidden. Profile, activity and Status audiences control what people see in WhatsApp, not the existence of that number.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Privacy to set each profile and activity audience separately, and choose Status privacy before every sensitive post. Remember that mentions, group sharing, read-receipt limits, old Status updates and screenshots can defeat assumptions about who can see or retain your content.
