Instagram lets you decide whether messages from different kinds of people arrive in your Chats, appear as Message Requests, or are not delivered. Open your profile settings, find the current messaging or message-controls area, and set the least permissive delivery option for each sender category you want to limit. Group-chat invitations use a separate control, so change that setting as well if unwanted group additions are the problem.
Instagram changes menu names and available choices by app version, country, age, and account status. Use the labels shown in your own app rather than relying on a single fixed tap sequence.
How do I stop people from messaging me on Instagram?
Use Instagram’s message controls. They are category-based: the app may show separate controls for people you follow, your followers, other Instagram accounts, or other groups. For every category you want to restrict, choose the least permissive delivery choice offered. Depending on the category, that can mean sending a message to Chats, routing it to Message Requests, or choosing no delivery.
- Open your profile. In Instagram, tap your profile picture, then open the three-line menu.
- Enter settings. Look for Settings and activity, or the equivalent settings label in your version of the app.
- Find messaging controls. Search the settings list for Messages and story replies, Message controls, or a section that specifically mentions message requests. The wording and location can differ.
- Open each relevant sender category. Review every category the account presents instead of changing only the first one you see.
- Choose a delivery destination. Select the option that sends messages to Chats, sends them to Message Requests, or prevents delivery. To stop a category from reaching you, select the no-delivery choice when it is available.
- Return to the category list and repeat. Settings normally apply as you change them, but leave the page and reopen it to confirm that each category shows your intended choice.
This changes where new contact attempts go. It does not automatically erase an existing conversation, and a control aimed at people you do not follow may not stop an established follower relationship or an already-open chat. Check the categories and descriptions in your account to understand the exact scope.

Chats, Message Requests, and no delivery: what each choice means
Meta describes three broad outcomes for Instagram messages. The practical difference is whether a person can place a message directly in your normal inbox, can send a request that you must review, or cannot deliver a new message through that route.

The available categories and choices are account-specific. One account may show several kinds of followers and non-followers; another may present a shorter list. Set each category independently. Selecting Message Requests for one group does not silently change the setting for every other group.
How do I turn off message requests?
Instagram may not present one universal switch called “Turn off all message requests.” Instead, open the message-request controls and change each sender category that can currently create a request.
- Go to your profile menu and open Settings and activity or its current equivalent.
- Open Messages and story replies, Message controls, or the message-request section shown in your settings.
- For every category that you do not want to contact you, select the no-delivery option rather than Message Requests.
- Review the remaining categories. If one is still set to Chats or Message Requests, that category can still reach you according to its setting.
If the app offers only Chats and Message Requests for a particular category, Instagram has not made a no-delivery choice available for that category on your account. Use the most restrictive choice shown, then use an account-specific action such as Restrict or Block when one person is the problem.
Can I stop non-followers from DMing me?
Usually, yes, when your account displays a category for people you do not follow or other accounts outside your established connections. Open that category in message controls and choose no delivery. If you still want the ability to review potential contacts, choose Message Requests instead.
Do not assume that “non-followers” covers every person who is not in your preferred circle. Instagram can divide senders into multiple categories, and the labels can change. Read the description beneath each category and apply the restrictive choice to every category that represents unwanted contacts.
These controls concern new delivery. They may not close an existing conversation, remove someone who already follows you, or end a connection that Instagram treats as established. If one account continues to contact you, use the account-level tools described below.

Group-chat invitations are separate from one-to-one message-request delivery. Someone can be unable to send you a normal request and still be able to invite you to a group if the group setting remains permissive.

- Open your profile menu and enter the current settings area.
- Go to the messaging or message-controls section.
- Look for a setting that refers specifically to group chats, group invitations, or who can add you to groups.
- Choose the most restrictive option offered for the sender categories you want to exclude.
- Return to the message controls and verify both the one-to-one delivery settings and the group setting.
Because Instagram uses different labels and eligibility rules across accounts, follow the explanation displayed beside the group setting. Changing message requests alone does not change group invitations.
Choose the right response for one unwanted account
General delivery controls are best when you want a broad rule. If a particular account is repeatedly contacting you, Instagram provides separate actions with different effects.

These tools solve different problems. Restrict is not a substitute for a no-delivery category rule, Hidden Words is not guaranteed to catch every abusive message, and reporting does not itself configure your inbox. Instagram cannot guarantee that every unwanted contact attempt will stop, so combine the broad setting with the account-level action that matches the situation.

Teen and supervised-account differences
Teen accounts can have stricter defaults than adult accounts. Meta says teens under 16, or under 18 in certain countries, can by default be messaged or added to group chats only by people they already follow or are connected to. The exact threshold and available controls depend on the country and the account’s age and status.
For supervised teens under 16, Meta says a parent may need to approve some requests to change safety and privacy defaults to a less restrictive setting. The app may therefore show an approval request instead of allowing the teen to change the option immediately. Supervision status and local eligibility rules affect what appears.
Meta also says that a message request from someone who is not already connected to a teen is text-only until the teen accepts it. Images, videos, and voice notes cannot be sent in that request before acceptance. This safeguard is specific to the teen settings described by Meta and should not be assumed to apply to every Instagram account.
Why your settings may look different
Instagram’s labels and menu placement are not identical for every user. Differences can result from:

- iPhone and Android app versions or a staged interface change;
- country-specific age and safety requirements;
- the account’s age, supervision status, or professional/personal configuration;
- whether a sender already follows you, is followed by you, or has an established conversation;
- features that Instagram has enabled gradually rather than for every account at once.
If you cannot find the wording in this guide, use the settings search field for message, request, or group. Then read the explanatory text beside each result. Do not select a setting based only on its heading if the description identifies a narrower sender category.

Understand the scope before you change a setting
Think of message controls as a routing system rather than a retroactive delete button. They govern how a new message is handled when it comes from a defined category. They do not necessarily remove message history, revoke access to an existing thread, or undo a connection that Instagram considers established. If your goal is to clean up an old conversation, delete or leave that conversation separately; changing delivery settings alone will not perform those tasks.
Also distinguish a sender’s relationship to you from whether you recognize the person. A follower may be someone you know, a business, or a stranger. Conversely, a non-follower may be a legitimate contact. Read the category description and choose the rule that matches the behavior you want, not merely a label that sounds familiar.
Before saving a very restrictive choice, consider whether you rely on Instagram for customer inquiries, school or community groups, or emergency contacts. Message Requests can preserve a review channel when no delivery would hide legitimate first contact. You can always tighten the rule later if the request volume becomes unmanageable.

After changing the controls, verify the result without assuming that an old thread is a new test.
- Reopen the relevant category and confirm that the selected delivery choice is still displayed.
- Distinguish a new contact attempt from an existing chat. An older conversation can remain visible even when new requests from a category are restricted.
- Check both one-to-one message controls and group-chat controls if group invitations were part of the problem.
- Look in Message Requests and Hidden Requests for messages that were filtered rather than blocked.
- If one account still contacts you, open that account’s options and consider Restrict, Block, or Report.
Do not ask a friend to repeatedly test your account if doing so could create unwanted requests. A single controlled check, followed by reviewing the settings description, is usually enough to confirm which route is active.
If a message still gets through
First identify where it appeared. A message in Chats may come from a category still set to direct delivery. A message in Message Requests may mean the control is working as a screening rule rather than a block. A group invitation points to the separate group setting. A message from a person you already follow, or from an existing conversation, may fall outside a non-follower rule.
Reopen every category instead of changing only the setting that seems most obvious. Instagram may list multiple kinds of accounts, and the restrictive option may be available for one category but not another. If the setting has disappeared, changed name, or offers different choices after an update, use the current in-app description as the guide. Country, age, supervision, and account state can change eligibility.
For repeated contact by one account, stop troubleshooting the general rule and use the account-level menu. Restrict can reduce visibility, Block is the stronger barrier, and Report is appropriate for suspected abuse or policy violations. Hidden Words can move requests containing chosen terms or emojis to Hidden Requests, but it is a filter and not a guarantee that every message will be caught.

Practical decisions for common situations
You want only known contacts in your normal inbox
Leave trusted categories on Chats if that is the experience you want, and set less familiar categories to Message Requests. This preserves a review queue instead of allowing unknown accounts to enter your main conversations.
You do not want strangers to create requests at all
Set every displayed category representing strangers or people outside your connections to no delivery. Then review the group-chat control separately, because a group invitation can follow a different rule.
You are receiving harassment from one person
Use Block for the strongest account-level response, or Restrict if you need a less visible intervention. Report content that may violate Instagram’s rules, and preserve any evidence you may need before deleting the conversation.

Configure Hidden Words with the words, phrases, or emojis you want routed to Hidden Requests. Continue using delivery controls and account-level actions because filtering does not guarantee that every unwanted message is intercepted.
You manage a teen or supervised account
Expect stricter defaults and possible approval prompts. Check the age and country wording shown in the account, and make changes through the supervision flow when Instagram requires parental approval.
You run a public-facing account
Decide whether losing unsolicited requests would also hide legitimate business, collaboration, or support messages. A Message Requests workflow may be more practical than no delivery. Apply the rule only to the categories that create noise, and keep checking whether Instagram has added a separate category for another type of sender.
