Start with Your Algo if you want the most private, configurable way to tell Threads what to show you. Meta says Your Algo lets you request more or less of selected topics and choose a duration of one, three, or seven days. If you need a temporary public request, use Dear Algo; if you want a timeline containing only accounts you follow, switch to Following. Custom feeds, pinning, and feed-order settings can then make those choices easier to reach every day.
Threads changes its interface as features roll out, so the labels or location of these controls can differ by account and country. Use the feature names below as your guide and look for the Algo controls, feed tabs, and custom-feed options in the current Threads app.
Choose the control that matches your goal
Threads has several ways to shape the content you see, but they do different jobs. Your Algo and Dear Algo are topic-preference requests. Following is a feed view limited to people you already follow. Custom feeds organize selected topics or profiles into dedicated views. The table below shows the practical differences.

For most people, the best sequence is to try Your Algo, use Following when you want a strict followed-accounts view, and build a custom feed for interests you check repeatedly. Dear Algo is useful when you are comfortable making the request publicly.

Use Your Algo for a private topic request
Your Algo is the clearest choice when you want to influence recommendations without publishing your preferences. In Meta’s June 16, 2026 announcement, the company described it this way: “With Your Algo, you can tell Threads you want to see more or less of certain topics and choose how long the request lasts: one, three, or seven days.” The request is private to you, unlike a Dear Algo post.
How to use it
- Open the current Threads app and look for the Your Algo control. Meta has described Your Algo and Dear Algo as being managed in one hub, but has not published a universal tap-by-tap path that applies to every account.
- Enter the topic preference you want to change. State whether you want more or less of the topic, using ordinary language that identifies the subject as clearly as possible.
- Select the duration offered for your request: one day, three days, or seven days.
- Submit the request and return to your feed. The change is temporary; when the selected period ends, the request no longer governs the feed unless you make another one.
- Revisit the Algo hub if you need to review or manage the request. The exact controls may differ during rollout.
When each duration makes sense
- One day: Use this for a short event, breaking story, live broadcast, or temporary burst of interest.
- Three days: Choose this when you want a topic to remain prominent through a weekend or a short news cycle.
- Seven days: Use this for a sustained project, conference, hobby discussion, or multi-day event without creating a permanent feed.
Your Algo is a request to the recommendation system, not a guarantee that every post about the topic will appear or that unrelated posts will disappear. Meta’s announcement explains the feature’s intended behavior but does not provide independent testing of ranking results. If the stream still feels broad, combine the request with the Following view or a custom feed.
Use Dear Algo when a public request is acceptable
Dear Algo works similarly at the topic level, but the request is made in a public post. Meta’s February 11, 2026 announcement says that you type “Dear Algo” in a public Threads post and explain what you want to see more or less of. Once you share the request, Meta says Dear Algo adjusts your feed for three days so you can stay connected to current conversations.

Steps and expectations
- Create a public post in Threads that begins with “Dear Algo.”
- Describe the topic or topics you want more or less of. Keep the request specific enough to distinguish the conversation from broad categories.
- Publish the post. The request applies for three days according to Meta’s announcement.
- Remember that another person’s Dear Algo request can be reposted so that the preference is applied to the reposter’s feed.
Because the post is public, anyone who can view your profile may see the request. Do not put private interests, sensitive circumstances, or personal information in a Dear Algo post simply to influence recommendations. Choose Your Algo instead when privacy matters.
Switch to Following for a followed-accounts-only view
Threads’ For You feed combines posts from accounts you follow with recommended posts. Following is the direct alternative when you want a stream containing posts only from people you follow. Meta describes Following as a feed option rather than as a permanent change to the recommendation system.

What Following does
- Removes recommendation posts from that particular feed view, leaving posts from followed accounts.
- Gives you a predictable way to catch up with accounts you intentionally chose.
- Lets you return to For You when you want discovery and topic recommendations again.
What Following does not establish
Meta’s product description does not say that selecting Following disables recommendations elsewhere in Threads, changes who can reply to you, or alters the ranking of notifications. Treat it as a view-selection tool. If unwanted posts continue to appear in another surface, use the relevant feed, account, or conversation control instead of assuming Following changed the entire app.
Build a custom feed for recurring interests
A custom feed is useful when your interests are more specific than a temporary Algo request. You can organize selected profiles, topics, or interests into a dedicated view and return to it whenever you want. Meta announced that custom feeds can be pinned for quick access. It also said a custom feed can be set as the default feed that opens when you launch Threads.
Create an interest-specific view
- Open the custom-feed area in Threads and start a new feed.
- Add the profiles, topics, or other selections that belong together. For example, you might make separate feeds for local news, a professional field, and a hobby.
- Save the feed, then open it to check that the contents match your purpose.
- Pin feeds you use often so they are easier to reach.
- If Threads offers the setting for a default feed, choose the custom feed you want to see first at launch.
The available creation and editing controls can change with app updates. Meta’s February 4, 2025 announcement confirms sharing, pinning, and custom-feed functionality, but it does not specify one universal interface path or a complete country-by-country rollout list.
Share or keep a custom feed private
Meta says public custom feeds can be shared through a link or direct message. Sharing is useful for a group that wants the same collection of accounts or topics. Review the feed’s visibility before sharing if the selections reveal an interest you do not want associated with your profile. A private custom feed is the safer choice for personal tracking or sensitive subjects.
Arrange your everyday feed workflow
Use the following decision process rather than changing several controls at once. It makes it easier to tell which setting solved the problem.

- Decide whether the issue is discovery or unwanted interaction. If the problem is seeing too many recommended topics, continue with Algo, Following, or custom feeds. If the problem is hostile replies or unwanted contact, use the interaction tools described later.
- Choose the time horizon. Pick Your Algo for a one-, three-, or seven-day topic adjustment. Pick Dear Algo only when a public three-day request is acceptable. Pick a custom feed for an interest you expect to revisit.
- Choose the privacy level. Your Algo is private. Dear Algo is a public post. Custom feeds can be private or, where sharing is enabled, public.
- Choose the viewing mode. Open Following when you want only followed accounts. Open For You when you want recommendations mixed with followed accounts. Open a custom feed when you want a curated subset.
- Pin the views you use repeatedly. Pinning reduces the number of steps needed to return to a custom feed. If available on your account, set that feed as the default opening view.
- Reassess after the request expires. A temporary Algo preference should not be treated as a permanent subscription to a topic. When the duration ends, decide whether to create a new request or rely on a custom feed.
Keep recommendation controls separate from reply and account controls
Threads also provides tools for managing conversations and accounts. Those tools can make the app feel less noisy, but they are not described by Meta as general recommendation controls.
Hidden words
Meta describes hidden words as a way to filter replies. This is aimed at words appearing in conversation responses, not at removing every recommended post containing those words. Use it when the nuisance is reply content.
Reply approvals and follower-only replies
Reply approvals and follower-only reply or quote settings govern who can participate in discussions on your posts. They change conversation access, not the topic mix in your home feed.
Unfollow, block, restrict, and report
These profile actions address a particular account. Unfollow removes that account from the set of profiles you intentionally follow; block, restrict, or report addresses unwanted contact or policy concerns. None should be presented as a replacement for Your Algo or Following when the goal is to control broad recommendations.
Understand rollout dates and regional availability
Feature availability is not uniform. Meta’s February 11, 2026 Dear Algo announcement listed the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and United Kingdom. Meta’s June 16, 2026 Your Algo announcement listed the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Those are the countries named in the respective announcements, not a guarantee that every account in those countries has the feature or that later expansion has not occurred. A missing control can therefore mean that your account has not received the rollout, your app version is behind, or the interface has moved. Check the current app and account before concluding that the feature is unavailable permanently.
Troubleshoot when the feed does not change
Your Algo or Dear Algo is not visible
- Confirm that you are using the current Threads app and are signed into the account where you expect the feature.
- Look for an Algo hub or controls labeled Your Algo or Dear Algo rather than relying on an older menu location.
- Compare your country and account availability with the dated rollout information above.
- Allow for staged rollout differences; Meta’s announcements do not promise simultaneous access for every user.
The request seems ineffective
- Check that you selected the intended direction—more or less—and named a specific topic.
- Remember that an Algo request changes recommendations for a limited period; it does not create a permanently filtered feed.
- Open Following if your immediate need is to remove recommendations from the current view.
- Create a custom feed when you need a repeatable collection of profiles or topics rather than a temporary ranking preference.
Recommended posts still appear
Following is the appropriate test for a followed-accounts-only view. If recommendations remain outside Following, that does not contradict Meta’s description: the source defines Following as a feed option and does not claim it disables recommendation surfaces throughout the app.
A custom feed is not your opening view
Pinning a feed and making it the default are separate choices. Pin the feed for quick access, then look for the setting that chooses which feed opens when Threads launches. Meta announced that a custom feed can be made the default, but the exact control may vary in the current interface.

Meta’s official announcements explain what each feature is intended to do, but they do not independently measure ranking accuracy or promise that every request will produce the same result for every account. Topics can overlap, posts can contain several subjects, and recommendation systems can change as the service updates. Treat Your Algo and Dear Algo as preference signals, Following as a view filter, and custom feeds as organization tools.

Meta reported 500 million monthly active users in its June 16, 2026 Threads feature announcement. That figure describes the service’s scale; it is not evidence that recommendations are accurate or that one control works better than another.

A practical setup for common situations
You want fewer unrelated recommendations today
Use Your Algo privately, request less of the unwanted topic, and choose one day. Open Following if you need an immediate followed-accounts-only stream while the request is active.
You are following a week-long event
Use Your Algo, request more of the event topic, and select seven days. A custom feed can complement it if you already know the profiles or topics you want to monitor.
You want a permanent professional or hobby view
Create a custom feed, add the relevant profiles or topics, pin it, and set it as the default if that option is available. Do not use a three-day Dear Algo request for a need that recurs every week.

Create a public custom feed and share its link or send it by direct message, as supported by Meta’s custom-feed feature. Use a private feed when the selection itself is sensitive.
You dislike replies rather than recommendations
Use hidden words, reply approvals, follower-only reply or quote settings, or profile actions such as unfollow, restrict, block, or report. These address interaction and conversation management, not the general recommendation mix.
