The most reproducible way to move a magnetic skyrmion with light today is photothermal manipulation: focus a laser onto the magnetic film to create a local temperature-dependent potential, then translate that hot spot with a piezoelectric stage. The skyrmion follows, remains pinned to, or is released from the moving potential depending on the material and field conditions.

Optical-skyrmion beams are a more programmable option, but the 2026 work describing rotation, skipping and trochoidal motion is a micromagnetic simulation, not a completed laboratory steering experiment. A real setup therefore needs MOKE imaging, a fast camera, beam-position control and electromagnets before adding a spatial light modulator for structured light.

What light-controlled skyrmion motion means in practice

A magnetic skyrmion is a nanoscale, particle-like spin texture in a thin magnetic film or device. Its center can be tracked as it moves through the film. Light can influence that motion in two fundamentally different ways:

  • Photothermal manipulation (experimentally demonstrated): a focused manipulation laser produces a micrometre-scale temperature profile. The resulting energy landscape acts as a movable potential well. Translating the beam relative to the sample changes the skyrmion’s preferred position.
  • Structured-light or optical-skyrmion driving (theoretical so far): a beam with programmed phase and polarization carries spatially varying angular momentum and polarization. Micromagnetic calculations predict that these fields can drive magnetic-skyrmion trajectories, but the 2026 report has not established an independent laboratory steering demonstration.

These methods should not be presented as equivalent. The first has a published apparatus and measured trajectories; the second is a design target for an experiment. No universal laser power, speed, positional accuracy or temperature limit has been established. Those values depend on the magnetic material, film geometry, optical absorption, thermal boundary conditions and applied field, so they must be measured for each setup.

Evidence status and method choice

Method Status What supplies the force Optical complexity Main perturbation
Focused photothermal beam Laboratory measurements reported in Nature Communications (2025) Temperature-dependent potential gradient Focused laser, position stage and imaging optics Local heating and possible changes in magnetic parameters
Optical-skyrmion beam Micromagnetic prediction reported in 2026; laboratory steering not yet established Spatial phase, polarization, orbital angular momentum and spin angular momentum Phase-only spatial light modulator, polarization optics and calibrated beam relay Optical torque and any incidental heating; coupling is material-dependent

Choose photothermal control when the immediate goal is to demonstrate repeatable translation or trapping. Add structured light when the goal is programmable rotation, orbiting or direction-selective motion and you can validate the optical field and compare measurements with a model.

Hardware for a photothermal laboratory setup

Magnetic film or device

Start with a film and temperature range in which isolated skyrmions are stable. The magnetic state must be reproducible before optical manipulation begins. Stability can depend on thickness, interfaces, defects, temperature and applied field; the quoted field in one experiment is not a specification for every material.

MOKE microscope and illumination

Magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy provides contrast from the magnetization and allows the skyrmion center to be followed in real time. The cited photothermal measurements used a 530 nm LED for MOKE illumination and an electron-multiplying CCD (EMCCD) camera. The LED is the imaging source, not necessarily the manipulation source. Keep the imaging path stable while the manipulation beam is scanned.

Focused manipulation laser

Focus a separate laser to a micrometre-scale spot on or near the magnetic layer. Its absorbed power establishes the temperature profile that forms the potential well. Because no universal wavelength, power or spot size has been established, determine those parameters experimentally while monitoring for irreversible changes to the film.

Piezoelectric translation stage

A two-dimensional piezo stage moves the sample or the focused beam with nanometre-scale command resolution. In this application its important function is repeatable relative motion: the potential must sweep along a known path while the camera records the response. Calibrate the commanded displacement against a fiducial on the sample before collecting trajectories.

Electromagnets and field control

Use electromagnets to set the magnetic state and hold the skyrmion in its operating regime. In the cited measurements, an out-of-plane field of 2.56 Oe was applied during photothermal manipulation. An in-plane field was used only for initial nucleation and then set to zero. Treat 2.56 Oe as a condition for that material and geometry, not a general operating point.

Step-by-step photothermal manipulation

  1. Prepare and characterize the magnetic state. Place the film in the field and temperature regime where isolated skyrmions appear. Use MOKE images to verify that the objects are separated well enough for single-skyrmion tracking.
  2. Set the electromagnets. Apply the field protocol used for nucleation, including any in-plane component, then remove the in-plane field if your protocol follows the cited experiment. Establish the required out-of-plane field and allow the magnetic state to settle before moving the beam.
  3. Align the MOKE path. Illuminate with the 530 nm LED configuration used for imaging, focus the microscope on the magnetic layer and acquire a static sequence. Check that the skyrmion contrast does not drift when the manipulation laser is off.
  4. Focus the manipulation beam. Bring the laser to the intended spot and record the beam position relative to the sample. Increase exposure conservatively while watching the skyrmion and the background for thermal or irreversible changes.
  5. Calibrate relative motion. Command the piezo stage through a known two-dimensional pattern. Measure the displacement in camera coordinates and determine the conversion between stage coordinates and pixels. Correct for rotation or non-orthogonality between the stage axes and the image axes.
  6. Create a moving potential. Translate the sample or beam so the hot spot approaches the skyrmion. Use constant-velocity segments, pauses and reversals to distinguish following from incidental drift. Record the complete command waveform with the image timestamps.
  7. Track in real time. Acquire MOKE frames continuously with the EMCCD. Keep exposure, gain, frame interval and focus fixed during a run. Stop the scan if the skyrmion disappears, merges with another object or the background changes abruptly.
  8. Analyze the trajectory. Detect the skyrmion centroid in each frame and link detections with TrackMate in ImageJ. Export time, x and y coordinates, then compare the path with the programmed stage trajectory and with laser-on and laser-off controls.
  9. Repeat across conditions. Vary one factor at a time—stage velocity, beam path, field or temperature—and repeat enough runs to expose pinning, stochastic jumps and sample-to-sample variation. Report the actual conditions with every trajectory.

How the photothermal force moves a skyrmion

Absorption raises the local temperature around the focused spot. Temperature changes can alter magnetic anisotropy, exchange, saturation magnetization or other energy terms, producing a position-dependent skyrmion energy. The skyrmion tends to move toward a lower-energy location, so translating the beam translates the potential landscape.

The response is not guaranteed to be a perfect copy of the beam path. Defects can pin the skyrmion until the thermal gradient is large enough to depin it; rapid scans can produce lag; and the gyrotropic nature of a skyrmion can create transverse motion relative to the applied gradient. A run should therefore be evaluated by its measured two-dimensional trajectory rather than by assuming one-dimensional following.

Heating is both the actuator and a source of error. A beam that is strong enough to move the skyrmion can also change the population of skyrmions, alter the background or damage the film. Record the beam-on temperature response if you have a calibrated thermal measurement, and state clearly when only the optical drive—not an absolute temperature—was measured.

Adding an optical-skyrmion beam

Required optical components

A structured-light experiment adds a phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) in a relayed pupil or image plane, polarization optics before and after the modulator, beam-expanding and focusing optics, and a power monitor. The SLM must be compatible with the laser wavelength, aperture, damage threshold and control software. Its phase calibration and polarization response should be measured at the operating wavelength rather than assumed from a nominal specification.

What to program

The programmed field can contain a spatial polarization texture, orbital angular momentum (OAM), a selected helicity and a controlled phase gradient. Measure the beam in the sample plane with an appropriate polarimetric or interferometric calibration before placing the magnetic sample in the focus. A calculated hologram is not proof that the intended polarization texture reaches the film.

  • Rotation: the skyrmion circulates around a beam-defined structure.
  • Skipping: the trajectory advances through intermittent arcs rather than a smooth orbit.
  • Trochoidal motion: the path combines forward drift and looping components.

The model separates contributions from field gradients, OAM and spin angular momentum. OAM-related forces provide azimuthal drift; the OAM mode number changes the skyrmion Hall angle in the reported antiferromagnetic calculations. Spin-angular-momentum terms modify precession, and frequency can select the rotation direction in that theory. Beam asymmetry and magnetization–polarization coupling provide spatial selectivity.

How to test the prediction experimentally

  1. Characterize the SLM-generated phase and polarization field at the magnetic film, including its handedness and intensity profile.
  2. Image an unstructured, linearly polarized beam with identical average power as a control.
  3. Apply the same MOKE, camera, stage and electromagnet protocol used for photothermal measurements.
  4. Acquire trajectories while changing only one structured-light parameter, such as OAM mode number, helicity or frequency.
  5. Fit the measured paths to a micromagnetic model that includes thermal gradients, field gradients, OAM and spin-angular-momentum terms.
  6. Test whether the predicted mode persists when the beam is translated, the skyrmion is repositioned and the magnetic field is reversed.

Until those controls and measurements are reported, describe optical-skyrmion steering as a prediction, not as an achieved device function.

Trajectory measurement and data quality

Use the image sequence as a measurement, not merely a demonstration video. Background-subtract or normalize frames consistently, define a detection threshold before comparing runs and retain frames in which the skyrmion is absent or ambiguous. TrackMate in ImageJ can link centroid detections, but automated links should be inspected around close encounters, pinning events and frame drops.

Report stage coordinates and image coordinates separately. A camera pixel is not a physical distance until magnification is calibrated, and a stage command is not the beam displacement until backlash, hysteresis and sample mounting errors are characterized. Include timestamps so velocity and lag can be computed without inferring them from frame count alone.

Useful control sequences include laser off, stage stationary, beam translated without a skyrmion, and repeated forward–reverse scans. These controls reveal thermal drift, mechanical vibration, optical background changes and defects that might otherwise be mistaken for light-driven motion.

Troubleshooting common failures

The skyrmion does not move

  • Check that the object is a stable isolated skyrmion rather than a transient contrast feature.
  • Verify that the manipulation spot overlaps the magnetic layer and that the stage actually translates it in the intended direction.
  • Look for pinning at defects; use a slower scan or a different path before increasing optical exposure.
  • Confirm the magnetic field and temperature have not moved outside the stability window.

The skyrmion disappears during illumination

  • Reduce exposure and check whether the contrast recovers after the laser is blocked.
  • Inspect for irreversible background changes that indicate heating or damage.
  • Repeat with shorter dwell times and record the threshold at which the magnetic state changes.

The trajectory is noisy or discontinuous

  • Check EMCCD focus, gain and frame timing.
  • Inspect TrackMate links manually around jumps and missed detections.
  • Measure mechanical vibration and stage backlash with a fiducial marker.
  • Separate genuine depinning events from camera or illumination flicker by comparing laser-on and control sequences.

Structured-light results do not match the model

  • Measure the actual polarization and phase at the sample; an SLM calibration error can erase the intended texture.
  • Include the measured intensity profile and thermal gradient in the micromagnetic model.
  • Check helicity, OAM mode sign and frequency conventions before comparing rotation direction.
  • Test a simple beam and a no-SLM control to isolate optical-coupling effects from ordinary photothermal motion.

Reproducibility, reporting and safety

Record the magnetic stack, film dimensions, temperature, field orientation and exact field values. State which field components were used for nucleation and which remained during motion. Give the manipulation wavelength, beam geometry, exposure or power measurement method, spot-size definition, stage trajectory, camera settings and analysis procedure. Do not generalize a value such as 2.56 Oe beyond the material and geometry in which it was measured.

Use appropriate laser enclosure, beam dumps, interlocks and wavelength-rated eyewear. Prevent reflected light from entering the microscope eyepiece or an uncovered camera port. Electromagnets can attract tools and alter nearby instruments; secure the sample and keep ferromagnetic objects away from the pole pieces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A convincing result combines a measured MOKE trajectory, a calibrated beam or beam position, magnetic-field logs and controls that rule out drift. For photothermal work, that evidence is already within reach using the demonstrated microscope–camera–stage–electromagnet arrangement. For optical-skyrmion driving, the same measurement discipline is needed before simulation-predicted rotation, skipping or trochoidal motion can be called an experimental result.
