You can control compatible HomeKit accessories without opening the Home app by adding a Home scene or accessory to iPhone Control Center. Open Control Center, tap the Add button, choose Add a Control, select Home Scene or Accessory, then choose your home and the device or scene. If Control Center is allowed on the Lock Screen, those controls are available there too. A HomePod or Apple TV 4K can be required for remote access and certain Home features.
What Lock Screen and Control Center controls can do
Control Center is the fastest route for a specific Home action. A configured control can switch a light or a group of lights, start playback on a HomePod, lock the front door, or expose another action supported by that accessory. Depending on the device, an accessory tile may also let you change a compatible light’s color or choose an input on a smart television.

The available action is determined by the accessory’s HomeKit services and by what iOS exposes for that service. A lock, lamp, camera, fan, switch, television, or speaker therefore will not all present the same controls. If an action is not offered for a particular tile, that is normally a compatibility or service limitation rather than a missing setting.
What you need before adding a control
The accessory must already be in Apple Home
Pair the light, lock, plug, switch, speaker, television, camera, or other device with Apple Home first. Control Center does not discover an unpaired accessory; it surfaces devices and scenes that already belong to a Home configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Rich, 360-Degree Sound – Delivers deep bass and crisp high frequencies for immersive audio in any room.
- Siri Voice Assistant – Control music, smart home devices, and get information hands-free.
- Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.
- Compact & Stylish Design – Small but powerful, fits perfectly in any space.
- Privacy & Security – Designed to keep your personal information safe and secure.
Check the accessory’s Home compatibility and the services it exposes. Two products in the same category can offer different actions: one light may expose color control while another supports only on and off, and one lock may expose a lock command while another exposes additional status information.
Control Center access must be enabled on the Lock Screen
Controls added to Control Center are available from the Lock Screen only when iOS permits Control Center access while the phone is locked. If that access has been disabled, the same Home control remains available after you authenticate and open Control Center normally.
Because a Lock Screen control can operate a device before the phone is unlocked, review this choice for security-sensitive accessories. A front-door lock, garage control, or other entry-related device may be better kept behind authentication, while a lamp or media control may be convenient to expose.

A home hub may be needed
Some Home functions and remote operation require a home hub. Apple’s Home materials identify HomePod and Apple TV 4K as the two documented hub paths in this setup. Adaptive Lighting, for example, requires a home hub such as an Apple TV 4K or HomePod speaker.

A hub is especially relevant when you want to operate the home while the iPhone is away from the local network. The exact requirement depends on the feature and accessory, so do not assume that every local control or every remote action has the same hub requirement.
How to add a Home scene or accessory to Control Center
- Open Control Center on the iPhone.
- Tap the Add button.
- Tap Add a Control.
- Choose Home Scene or Accessory.
- Select the Home that contains the device.
- Choose the accessory or scene you want to place in Control Center.
After the selection is saved, the Home control appears in Control Center. A scene can trigger its preset group of actions, while an individual accessory tile operates that one device or presents the accessory-specific action that iOS supports.
For a practical layout, start with actions you perform several times a day: the entry light, a group of downstairs lights, the front-door lock, or a frequently used media scene. Add a scene when several devices should change together; add an individual accessory when you need a single, direct command.
How to use the control from the Lock Screen
Open Control Center
On an iPhone with Face ID, wake the phone and swipe down from the upper-right corner. On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge. If the phone is locked and Control Center access is enabled, the Home tile is available without opening the Home app.

Run a scene or accessory action
Tap the Home control you added. A scene runs its configured actions. An accessory control performs the action represented by its tile, such as switching a light, starting HomePod playback, or locking the front door. If the tile offers more than one supported service, use the action shown for that accessory rather than expecting every Home device to behave like a switch.
Confirm the result
Look for the tile’s updated state or the accessory’s visible response. A light should reflect its new on or off state, a lock should report its changed state when status is available, and a speaker should begin the selected playback action. If the tile does not update or the physical device does not respond, use the troubleshooting checks below before repeatedly tapping the command.
Home Lock Screen widget versus Control Center
| Option | Primary purpose | What it exposes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home Lock Screen widget | At-a-glance awareness and quick access | Home information and a route into Home controls | Checking the home quickly or reaching Home from the Lock Screen |
| Control Center Home control | Direct operation | Selected scenes and accessory actions | Turning a light on, locking a door, starting playback, or using another supported tile action |
The widget and Control Center are complementary. Use the widget when you mainly want a quick view or an entry point; use a Control Center tile when the goal is a specific command with as few taps as possible.

Lights and groups
A light tile can switch one lamp or a group of lights on or off. If the light service supports color, the control may expose color selection as well. A group scene is useful for an arrival or bedtime routine because it can change several lights together instead of requiring separate taps.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
HomePod playback
Apple’s example for an accessory tile includes starting music playback on a HomePod. The control is for the playback action exposed by that speaker; it does not imply that every audio setting or every playback destination is available from the same tile.
Door locks
A compatible lock can expose a lock command from its accessory tile. Treat this as a high-consequence control: verify that the intended lock is selected, and decide whether allowing Control Center on the Lock Screen is appropriate for everyone who might hold the phone.
Televisions and other accessory-specific services
Some supported smart televisions can expose input selection. Other accessories may expose their own HomeKit services. The tile’s choices are governed by the model’s compatibility and the services it makes available to Apple Home, not by a universal Control Center menu.

Apple Home supports Matter accessories. Once a Matter accessory has been added to Apple Home, Apple says it can be controlled in the Home app, with Siri, through Control Center, and in compatible third-party HomeKit apps.

Both HomePod and Apple TV 4K are documented Apple hub paths. The better choice depends on equipment you already own and how you want the hub to fit into the home, rather than on a universal performance ranking.

Do not buy a hub solely to make a local Control Center tile appear: the accessory must still be paired with Apple Home and compatible with the requested service. A hub becomes important when the feature itself requires one or when you need remote operation while away from the home network.

Troubleshooting missing or ineffective controls
The Home option is not shown when adding a control
- Confirm that at least one accessory or scene has already been added to Apple Home.
- Check that you selected the correct Home during the setup sequence.
- Verify that the accessory is compatible with Apple Home and exposes a service that iOS can control.
- If the device is Matter-based, finish adding it to Apple Home before trying to place it in Control Center.
The control appears, but the expected action is missing
- Review the accessory’s supported HomeKit services. A device may support on and off without supporting color, input selection, or another advanced action.
- Try the individual accessory instead of a scene if you need a direct command, or use a scene if several devices must change together.
- Make sure you selected the intended device; similarly named rooms or accessories can make a valid tile look incorrect.
The control works at home but not remotely
- Determine whether the requested feature requires a home hub. Remote operation is one of the cases for which a hub can be required.
- Use a HomePod or Apple TV 4K hub path supported by your Home configuration.
- Check that the accessory itself supports the service you are trying to use; a hub cannot add a capability the device does not expose.
Control Center is unavailable while the phone is locked
Enable Control Center access on the Lock Screen in the iPhone’s device settings. If you intentionally disabled that access for security, unlock the phone before opening Control Center and using the same tile.
The tile does not reflect the device’s current state
First check the accessory directly and confirm that it is powered, connected, and still present in Apple Home. Then retry the command once. If the device remains unavailable, the problem is with the accessory, network path, or Home configuration rather than the visual placement of the Control Center tile.
A practical setup checklist
- Pair each target accessory with Apple Home and give it a clear name.
- Confirm the exact action the accessory supports, including any color, lock, playback, or input service.
- Add the most-used device or scene through Control Center → Add → Add a Control → Home Scene or Accessory.
- Enable Lock Screen access to Control Center only if the convenience is worth allowing those commands before authentication.
- Add a HomePod or Apple TV 4K when the chosen Home feature or remote operation requires a hub.
- Test every tile from the Lock Screen and verify the physical result before relying on it for entry, lighting, or safety routines.
Bottom line
For direct Home control, add a scene or accessory to Control Center and allow Control Center on the Lock Screen. The tile can operate supported lights, locks, HomePod playback, televisions, and other compatible services without opening the Home app. Pair the accessory first, check its available services, and use a HomePod or Apple TV 4K when the feature or remote access requires a home hub.
