To stop one person from seeing your live location, open Google Maps and use Profile picture or initial → Location sharing → that person’s profile → Stop. To prevent people from adding arrival or departure alerts about you while leaving location sharing active, turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications in your Google Account’s Location Sharing settings. These are separate controls: silencing a notice on your own Android phone is different again, and may make your shared location refresh less accurately.
Start by deciding what you want to change: the person’s access to your location, their ability to set alerts about you, or the notifications your own phone displays. Each has its own setting, and changing one does not necessarily change the others.
What each Google Maps location control does
Google Maps has several controls that can sound alike but affect different things. Choose based on whether you want to end someone’s access, prevent alerts about your movements, or simply silence a notice on your own phone.
| Control | Whose access or notices change? | Does location sharing continue? | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop sharing with a person | That selected person can no longer access your shared location. | No, not with that person. | Google Maps on mobile; sharing settings can also be managed on a computer. Google Maps Help and computer instructions. |
| Turn off Location Sharing notifications about you | Stops other people’s arrival and departure alerts about you. | Yes. Sharing can continue. | Google Account Location Sharing settings. Google Maps Help. |
| Turn off “Google Location Sharing (you)” on Android | Silences the shared-location update notice on your own Android device. | Sharing may continue, but location refresh can become inaccurate. | Google Maps notification settings on Android. Google Maps Help. |
| End trip progress sharing | Stops sharing the current trip’s destination, estimated arrival time, and location. | That trip share ends when navigation stops or the destination is reached. | Google Maps navigation on mobile. Google Maps Help. |
If your priority is to make a particular person lose access, use Stop for that person. Turning off an alert permission or hiding a notification is not a substitute for ending the share.

The difference matters in practice. A viewer’s arrival alert is a notification they set about a place; the Android “Google Location Sharing (you)” notice is displayed on the sharer’s own device. Turning off the latter does not block the viewer’s alert. Likewise, blocking alerts does not revoke the viewer’s access to the shared location. If you want both privacy changes, stop sharing with the person and turn off alert permissions as needed.
How do I stop sharing my location with one person?
Google’s Android instructions use the person’s profile in Location sharing. This ends sharing with that person; it does not require you to stop sharing with everyone else.
- Open the Google Maps app on your mobile device.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Location sharing.
- Tap the profile of the person you want to remove.
- Tap Stop.
Review the people shown in Location sharing before you act. Sharing is managed per person, so stopping one share is the direct way to remove that recipient without treating the change as a blanket switch for everyone else. If your goal is to end all current access, review each person who appears there and stop the shares you no longer want.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGoogle also provides a way to manage Location Sharing for a specific person through Google Account settings. On a computer, you can manage Location Sharing settings, find or hide another person, and stop sharing. Google says a live-location share must be initiated on a mobile device, so use the mobile app to start one. See Google Account Help and the computer instructions.
Computer controls can be useful if you are reviewing settings from a desktop, but they do not change the basic distinction between stopping a share and changing a notification permission. If you are trying to begin a new live share, use a mobile device; the computer instructions are for managing Location Sharing settings, including finding or hiding another person and stopping sharing.
What someone you share with may see
Depending on the share and available information, recipients may see your name and photo, your recent device location even when you are not using Google apps, and your device’s battery state. If a recipient sets an arrival or departure notification, they may also receive the relevant arrival or departure time. Google Maps Help
This is why hiding or silencing a notification on your own phone should not be treated as a privacy boundary. If you do not want a particular person to have access to location-sharing information, use that person’s profile and stop the share. If you are unsure who currently has access, open Location sharing and review the people listed there.
How do I turn off Google Maps location sharing notifications about me?
Arrival and departure alerts are created by the person viewing a shared location. If you want to block those alerts but keep sharing, turn off the permission that lets others create Location Sharing notifications about you:
- Open Google Account Location Sharing settings.
- Turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications.
This turns off existing alerts other people have added about you. Google says those people are not notified that you disabled alerts, and your location sharing can continue. The setting stays off even if you later stop and restart sharing. When a share itself stops, the related alerts stop too. Google Maps Help
This control is useful when you still want someone to see your location but do not want that person to receive arrival or departure alerts tied to particular places. It is not the same as stopping a share: the person may still see your shared location while the share is active. If you later want to restore the ability for people to create alerts, return to the same Google Account setting and turn the permission back on.

Google says the off state remains off even if you stop and then restart location sharing. In other words, restarting a share does not itself restore permission for other people to add alerts. Also, when an individual share stops, its related alerts stop. Keep those two events distinct: disabling the notification permission affects alerts about you, whereas stopping a share ends the relationship with that recipient.

Yes. A person who can view your shared location can create an arrival or departure notification for a chosen address or map location, if the feature is available for the accounts and share involved. The alert is set up from the viewer’s Google Maps account, not from your phone.
- The viewer opens Google Maps and taps your profile in Location sharing.
- They add a notification, then choose an address or a location on the map.
- They select whether to be notified when you arrive or depart, then save the notification.
Google’s official feature limit is up to five Location Sharing notifications for each person sharing their location with a viewer. Google’s help page does not display a publication year for that limit. If the viewer creates a notification about you, Google says you receive an email and may receive a push notification if Google Maps notifications are enabled. Google Maps Help
The notification is about the viewer’s chosen place and event: they choose an address or map location, then select arrival or departure. It is not simply a notice you turn on from your own phone. Google says you receive an email when someone creates one about you; a push notification may also arrive if Google Maps notifications are enabled. A viewer who cannot add a notification may be facing an account, link, device, or app limitation rather than a problem with the steps.
If you receive an email or push notice and do not want alerts about you, use Allow Location Sharing notifications in your Google Account settings. If instead you do not want that person to see your location, stop sharing with them. The alert permission and the share itself solve different problems.
How to silence your own Android location-sharing notice
The Android notification named Google Location Sharing (you) is a notice on your own device about your shared-location updates. Turning it off does not mean you have stopped sharing or prevented viewers from creating arrival and departure alerts. Google warns that disabling it can stop your shared location from refreshing, which may make the location shown to others inaccurate. If you need to end someone’s access, stop sharing with that person instead.
To manage the notice, open Google Maps’ notification settings on your Android phone or tablet and look for Google Location Sharing (you). Google’s instructions for Maps notifications are at Turn Google Maps notifications on or off. The exact settings path can vary by device and Android version.
Before switching it off, consider the tradeoff: this setting is intended to silence your own update notice, but Google warns it can interfere with location refresh. If someone depends on the shared location being current, turning off this notification may make the displayed location stale or inaccurate. For that reason, do not use it as the way to make yourself invisible or to revoke a person’s access. Use the person-specific Stop control for that.
This Android notice is also separate from the viewer’s Maps notification settings. A viewer needs Google Maps notifications enabled to receive relevant Location Sharing notices, but switching off your own “Google Location Sharing (you)” category is not the same as changing the viewer’s ability to receive an alert. The viewer’s alerts about your location are controlled by the Google Account permission described above.

Choose a duration for a location share
When you create a location share, choose its duration rather than leaving access open longer than needed. The available duration options and interface labels may depend on your device and account. Google provides separate instructions for Android and iPhone and iPad.

A duration-based share is useful when someone needs your location for a defined period rather than indefinitely. Check the duration during setup, then review Location sharing afterward if you need to confirm who still has access. The precise options can vary, so follow the controls shown in your current app rather than assuming a particular duration is available on every account.
Share progress during navigation
For a journey, Google Maps offers Share trip progress while navigating by car, foot, or bicycle. This shares the destination, estimated arrival time, and current location. The trip share ends when you reach the destination or stop navigation; it is temporary trip sharing rather than a replacement for reviewing any separate, ongoing location shares. See Google’s trip-sharing instructions.
This is a narrower option than a continuing location share: it is tied to an active trip and ends when the destination is reached or navigation is stopped. If you still have a separate share active with the same person, ending trip progress does not replace checking that share. Review Location sharing separately if you want to know whether a recipient retains access beyond the trip.

Why an arrival or departure notification may be unavailable
If the viewer cannot add a notification, Google identifies several possible restrictions. Location Sharing notifications also require Google Maps notifications to be enabled for the viewer to receive them.
- The share uses a link. Arrival and departure notifications are unavailable for location sharing by link.
- The account is not eligible. The feature may be unavailable for certain accounts, including accounts below the applicable age in the user’s country. Google’s help page identifies under-13 accounts or accounts below the applicable country age as a possible reason.
- The sharer is offline. A sharer being offline can make notifications unavailable.
- The app is outdated. Updating Google Maps may resolve an availability issue.
- The location is being viewed in a limited context. A location viewed on the web or in Maps without signing in through a shared link may not support the notification feature.
- Maps notifications are disabled. The viewer needs Maps notifications enabled to receive the relevant notices.
These are possible causes, not a guarantee that every unavailable notification has the same explanation. See Google’s notification availability guidance.
When troubleshooting, first check whether the share was made through a link. Link-based sharing does not support arrival and departure notifications, even if the viewer can otherwise access the location. Next, consider whether the viewer is signed in to the appropriate account, whether the sharer is online, and whether Google Maps is up to date. Age eligibility and country rules can also be relevant. Google lists these as possible limitations, so no single check guarantees that the feature will be available.
There are two different notification questions here: whether the viewer can create a Location Sharing alert, and whether they will receive the notice. Google says the viewer needs Maps notifications enabled to receive the relevant notifications. If the feature itself is unavailable, toggling notifications on may not fix restrictions such as a link-based share or account eligibility.

Location Sharing prerequisites and account restrictions
Google Account Help lists the following prerequisites for Location Sharing: a Google Account, a mobile device, an active internet connection, the device’s Use location setting, and Find Hub. Availability can also depend on country or region and account age. Google Account Help
- Google Workspace accounts: Location Sharing may not be available for a Workspace domain. If the controls are missing, ask the Workspace administrator whether the feature is enabled.
- Supervised accounts: A parent or guardian may manage Location Sharing settings. Check with the supervising adult if you cannot change a control.
- Platform differences: Google maintains separate Android and iPhone/iPad instructions, and labels or steps may differ by app version and device. Live sharing must be started on a mobile device, although settings can be managed on a computer.
Google’s instructions are available for Android, iPhone and iPad, and computer.
If the Location sharing menu or a control is missing, it may not mean that the app is malfunctioning. Check whether you are signed into the intended Google Account, whether the device has an active internet connection and Use location enabled, and whether the account and region support the feature. For a Workspace account, an administrator may need to enable Location Sharing. For a supervised account, the parent or guardian may manage the setting, so the account holder may not be able to change it independently.

Google provides separate Android and iPhone/iPad instructions because the interface can differ by platform. Labels can also change with app versions and devices. Use the corresponding current instructions when a menu name does not match exactly; do not assume a control is absent just because the steps look different on another platform. Computer settings provide management options, but live sharing still needs to be initiated on a mobile device.

A person can still see my location
Check Location sharing and stop sharing with that person from their profile. Do not rely on turning off an alert permission or silencing an Android notice to revoke access.
If you have stopped one person but are concerned about another, review the list again: sharing is managed by person. Confirm that you selected the intended profile and used Stop. An alert-permission change does not revoke access, and a notice change on your Android device does not make a recipient lose access.
Someone still gets arrival or departure alerts
Turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications in Google Account Location Sharing settings. This blocks alerts about you while a location share can remain active. If the concern is that someone can see your location at all, stop sharing with that person as well.
Google says people are not notified when you disable those alerts. Remember that this is an account setting that remains off even if you stop and later restart sharing. If a particular share ends, alerts related to that share stop too. If you still receive a notice, make sure you changed the Location Sharing notification permission rather than only silencing an Android update notice on your own device.
My location appears stale or inaccurate
On Android, check whether Google Location Sharing (you) notifications were disabled. Google warns that switching off this notice can stop location refresh. Also check that the device has an active internet connection and that Use location is enabled, both of which Google lists among Location Sharing prerequisites. Notification guidance and sharing prerequisites.
If those basics are in place but the location still appears stale, the documented controls here do not identify a single cause. Confirm which account is sharing and which share is active, and avoid disabling the update notice if current location refresh matters. Android notification steps vary by device, so check the current Maps notification settings for the device in use.
A setting or feature is missing
Confirm the account and share type support the feature, update Google Maps, and verify whether a Workspace administrator or supervising parent/guardian controls the account. Link-based shares do not support arrival and departure notifications. Account age, country or region, and device platform may also affect availability.
For a notification that cannot be created, also check whether the sharer is offline and whether the viewer is accessing the share on the web or through a link without signing in. Google lists these among possible availability issues. If the basic Location Sharing controls themselves are unavailable, check account prerequisites, Workspace administration, supervision, and regional or age eligibility.

Will someone know if I disable alerts about me?
Google says people are not notified when you turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications. The setting remains off even if you later stop and restart sharing.
Can I stop sharing with just one person?
Yes. Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, open the person’s profile, and tap Stop. Sharing is managed per person, so this is the control for removing that recipient.
Can I manage sharing from a computer?
Google allows Location Sharing settings to be managed on a computer, including finding or hiding another person and stopping sharing. A live-location share must be started on a mobile device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why can’t someone add an arrival alert for my location?
Possible reasons include a link-based share, an ineligible account or age, the sharer being offline, an outdated app, or viewing the location on the web or in Maps without signing in through a shared link. The viewer also needs Google Maps notifications enabled to receive relevant notices.
Does turning off “Google Location Sharing (you)” make me invisible?
No. It silences a notice on your own Android device. Google warns that turning it off can stop your shared location from refreshing and make it inaccurate. Stop sharing with a person to end that person’s access.
Does trip progress sharing end automatically?
Yes. Share trip progress ends when you reach the destination or stop navigation. Check for separate ongoing location shares if you also want to end access beyond that trip.

The Bottom Line
Use the control that matches your goal: tap Stop on a person’s Location sharing profile to end their access; turn off Allow Location Sharing notifications to block arrival and departure alerts while sharing can continue; and treat Android’s Google Location Sharing (you) notice as a separate device notification that may affect location refresh. For a journey, Share trip progress ends when navigation stops or the destination is reached.
