Google Photos puts people into automatically generated Face Groups. You can turn that feature on or off in settings, name a group so it becomes searchable, mark the correct group as Me for searches of yourself, and remove individual photos that were assigned incorrectly. These controls are separate: correcting one result leaves the photo in your library, while switching Face Groups off removes the account’s face-group data.
The controls and availability differ slightly between the web app and mobile app, and Google says Face Groups is not offered in every region, domain, or account type. Use the section for your device, then choose the smallest correction that solves your problem.
What Face Groups does in Google Photos
Face Groups is Google Photos’ face-clustering feature. When it is enabled, Google analyzes faces in your library, creates numerical face models, estimates which images are similar, and places likely matches into groups under People and pets. The groups are suggestions rather than guaranteed identifications, so a person can appear in more than one group or an unrelated person can be included.

Photos taken close together in time, or similarities such as clothing, may influence grouping when a face is partly hidden or not visible. That explains why a group can contain an image in which you cannot clearly see the person’s face. In some jurisdictions, Google says the models used for Face Groups may be considered biometric data.

Face Groups is an account-level Google Photos setting. It is not the same as a manually created album: a face group is generated and maintained by Google’s systems, while an album is a collection you curate yourself.
Check whether Face Groups is available
Before troubleshooting, confirm that you are signed in to the Google Account that holds the photo library. Google’s help documentation notes that Face Groups is unavailable in some geographic regions, Google Workspace or other domains, and account types. If the setting or People and pets section is missing, the feature may not be enabled for your account rather than broken.
On the web, open Google Photos Help’s computer instructions. On Android, consult the Android instructions; menu names can vary by app version and language.

- Go to photos.google.com/settings and sign in.
- Expand Group similar faces.
- Switch Face Groups on or off.
- Read the confirmation message before accepting a change, especially when switching the feature off.
Turning the switch on allows Google Photos to create or maintain groups. It may take time for groups to appear or for new photos to be processed; the setting itself does not instantly make every image searchable.
Turn Face Groups on or off on Android
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then open Photos settings.
- Look under Privacy or Preferences for Group similar faces. The category can differ by app version.
- Turn Face Groups on or off and confirm the prompt.
If you cannot find the control, update Google Photos, verify the signed-in account, and check whether the feature is supported for your region or account. Google’s Android help page documents the current path and availability caveat.

Name a group so you can search for that person
Naming a group adds a human-readable label to Google Photos’ automatically generated cluster. The label is private to your Google Photos experience and lets you search using the name or nickname you entered.
- Open Google Photos and select People and pets.
- Choose the face group you want to identify.
- Select Add a name (or the existing name) and enter a name or nickname.
- Save the label, then use that name in the Photos search box.
For the exact labeling controls, see Google’s “Label your face group” help page. A label does not rename the person in the original files; it changes how Google Photos indexes the group.

Google Photos has a special self-label. In People and pets, open the group that actually represents you, choose the option to identify it as Me, and confirm. After the label is set, search for me in Google Photos to find images that the service associates with you. Google documents this behavior in its face-group and labeling instructions.
Choose carefully if several groups contain you at different ages or with different hairstyles. If the service has split your photos across groups, correct the membership first, then apply the Me label to the group that is intended to represent you. The label is only useful when it is attached to the right group; it does not merge unrelated groups automatically.
Remove a photo that is in the wrong face group
Use an individual correction when one or a few results are wrong. Removing a result from a face group does not delete the underlying photo or video from your Google Photos library.

- Open People and pets and select the group containing the incorrect result.
- Open the group’s options and choose the control for reviewing or removing photos from the group.
- Select the photo or video that does not belong.
- Remove it from the group and confirm.
The exact button wording can vary between the web and mobile apps. If you still want the image, do not use the library’s trash command: remove it from the face group instead. The item remains available through the main photo timeline, albums, and other searches.
Change a label or correct a group assignment
Change or remove a group label
Open the relevant group under People and pets, select its current name, and edit or remove the label. Changing a label affects the search term associated with that group; it does not erase the photos in the group.
Review suggested merges
Google Photos may suggest that two groups represent the same person. Review the photos in both groups before accepting. Google’s desktop instructions warn that a completed merge cannot be undone, so do not merge groups merely because they have similar-looking thumbnails. If the groups include different people, leave them separate and remove the individual misclassified photos instead.
When a merge is appropriate
A merge is useful when the same person has been split into separate groups—for example, one group for older photos and another for recent photos. Confirm that the faces, dates, and surrounding images consistently identify the same person. A merge changes the organization of the face groups, not the original files in your library.
Choose the smallest change that solves the problem

This distinction matters when troubleshooting. If only one image is wrong, removing that result is reversible at the library level and avoids deleting all face-group information. Use the global switch only when you intend to stop Face Groups for the account.

What happens when you turn Face Groups off
Google’s official wording says: “If you turn off ‘Face Groups,’ you delete: Your face groups, Face models used to create those face groups, Face labels you created.” The switch therefore acts as a broad reset, not a temporary pause that preserves your labels for later.
Turning the feature off does not mean your original photos and videos are deleted from Google Photos. It removes the face-group structures and models that were generated from them. If you later enable Face Groups again, Google Photos may need to analyze the library and rebuild groups; previous labels should not be assumed to return.
Google’s Face Groups retention policy also says Face Groups content is deleted after more than two years of inactivity in Google Photos. That policy concerns the face-group data, not deletion of the underlying library photos. Keep the distinction in mind when deciding how much organization you are willing to lose.

Why a hidden face can still affect grouping
Face Groups is not limited to a clear, front-facing portrait. Google says it can consider nearby capture times and clothing similarities when a face is not visible. A group may therefore contain a back-of-the-head image, a group shot with an obscured face, or pictures taken during the same event. Remove those results individually if they make a group misleading.

Why suggestions can be wrong
Clustering estimates similarity; it does not establish a person’s identity. Changes in age, lighting, hair, masks, sunglasses, camera angle, and low resolution can lead to false matches or split groups. Treat suggested merges and suggested additions as items to review, not automatic facts.

What the biometric qualification means
Google says the face models used for Face Groups may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. That is a qualification about how the models may be treated under local law, not a universal legal classification. If your organization, employer, school, or local rules restrict biometric processing, check the applicable policy before enabling the feature.
Troubleshoot common Face Groups problems
The Face Groups switch is missing
- Confirm that you are in the intended Google Account.
- Check both the Group similar faces section and the People and pets area.
- Update the Google Photos app on Android and reopen it.
- Verify that your region, domain, and account type support Face Groups; Google does not make it available everywhere.
A newly uploaded photo is not grouped yet
Face grouping is an automated processing task, so a recent upload may not appear immediately. Leave Face Groups enabled, allow the account time to process the library, and check the person’s group again later. Avoid turning the feature off as a first response, because doing so deletes existing groups, models, and labels.
The same person has several groups
Compare the photos in each group. If they clearly depict the same person, use the merge suggestion or the available merge control, remembering that Google says a completed merge cannot be undone. If the groups contain different people, keep them separate and remove only the incorrect photos.
A group contains someone else
Open the group, remove the incorrect result, and leave the original file in the library. Repeat for other false matches. This targeted cleanup preserves the rest of your labels and personalized search.
The “Me” search returns the wrong photos
Open the group labeled Me, remove images of other people, and check whether photos of you are sitting in a different group. Correct the group membership before changing the label. Searching for me only uses the group that Google Photos has assigned that special label to; it does not independently verify every face in your library.
You turned Face Groups off by mistake
Turn the setting back on from the same desktop or Android path and allow Google Photos to rebuild its groups. Because Google states that turning the feature off deletes the face groups, models, and labels you created, do not expect the old organization to be restored automatically.

- After significant uploads, open People and pets and inspect new suggestions.
