Chromebook lighting has three separate questions: keyboard-backlight brightness, static RGB color, and animated effects. Use the dedicated keyboard-backlight keys for brightness, choose a color through Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style on supported RGB models, and do not expect an animation control in ChromeOS unless your device maker documents one. Screen-brightness keys change the display, not the keyboard.
Which Chromebook lighting control do you need?
ChromeOS treats display brightness and keyboard lighting as separate functions. A Chromebook can have screen-brightness keys without having a backlit keyboard, and an RGB keyboard is limited to particular hardware configurations. The controls documented by Google are:

Google’s Chromebook keyboard help and gaming-features help are the appropriate references for the controls ChromeOS exposes. The exact options still depend on the model, keyboard, and configuration.
Check whether your Chromebook has a controllable backlight
Look for the correct top-row symbols
Find keys printed with a keyboard-backlight symbol and separate decrease and increase markings. These are not the neighboring sun-shaped display keys. If your keyboard has no backlight symbols, it may not include a controllable backlight; check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model rather than assuming a software setting is missing.

Do not assume RGB support
RGB color selection is not a universal Chromebook feature. Google’s gaming guidance discusses specific devices, including the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, and Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook. That page explicitly says the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip does not support an RGB keyboard, showing why the model and configuration matter. A Chromebook’s gaming branding, ChromeOS version, or illuminated-looking keys alone does not prove that color controls are available.
Match the exact configuration
Two products sold under a similar family name can have different keyboards. Use the complete model name and configuration when checking specifications, not only a series name or the fact that a device is marketed for gaming. The presence of a backlight symbol confirms a keyboard-light shortcut, but it does not by itself confirm multicolor RGB hardware. Conversely, a device can have RGB hardware yet still expose only the controls documented for that configuration.
Change keyboard-backlight brightness
- Locate the dedicated keyboard-backlight decrease and increase keys on the top row. Do not use the display-brightness keys beside them.
- Press the decrease key to lower the keyboard light or the increase key to raise it.
- Stop pressing when the desired level is reached. If a key appears to do nothing, the light may already be at its lowest or highest setting.
The keys exist only on keyboards that provide this function. Google lists them separately from the display controls in its keyboard instructions. On a model without those keys, consult the device maker’s manual for any model-specific shortcut or limitation; do not substitute the screen-brightness controls.

Why the brightness shortcut may seem ineffective
A key at the lower limit cannot make the backlight darker, and a key at the upper limit cannot make it brighter. Try the opposite key once before concluding that the shortcut is broken. Also verify that you are looking at the keyboard rather than the display: the screen can change while the keyboard remains at its previous level if the wrong sun-marked key was pressed.
Choose a static RGB keyboard color
On a Chromebook with supported RGB hardware, use this exact ChromeOS path:
- Select the time in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Open Settings.
- Under Wallpaper and style, select Set your wallpaper & style.
- Scroll to the bottom and find Keyboard backlight.
- Choose a custom color and close Settings.
The Keyboard backlight control appears only when the device exposes the supported RGB feature. If it is absent, verify the model’s specifications and manufacturer documentation before treating the omission as a ChromeOS fault. Google’s documented path appears in both its keyboard help and gaming help.
What “custom color” means here
The documented control is for selecting a static color. It is not described as a per-key editor, zone editor, pattern designer, or animation timeline. If the page presents a color choice but no effect selector, that is consistent with Google’s documented feature set. Choose the color, then use the separate backlight keys if you need to adjust how bright that color appears.
Why the default color may change with your wallpaper
Google says the default keyboard color is based on the current wallpaper. That means a newly selected wallpaper can make the keyboard appear to change color even when you did not manually choose a new backlight setting. To use a specific color instead of the wallpaper-based default, return to Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style and select a custom color under Keyboard backlight.

This also explains why two users can see different colors on otherwise similar supported Chromebooks after choosing different wallpapers. A wallpaper-related change is not evidence that an animation has been enabled. It is a static color behavior described by Google.
What Battery Saver does to Chromebook lighting
Battery Saver can explain two changes at once: a dimmer display and a keyboard backlight that has switched off. Google documents both effects. Check its status at Settings > System preferences > Power.
- If Battery Saver is enabled while running on battery, it can lower display brightness and turn off the keyboard backlight.
- Battery Saver is unavailable while the Chromebook is charging.
- Plugging in the Chromebook turns Battery Saver off automatically, so the keyboard light can return when power is connected.
When lighting disappears only during battery use, check this power setting before restarting or resetting the Chromebook. Google’s details are in Extend your battery life with Battery Saver.

If both the display dims and the keyboard light turns off at the same time on battery, Battery Saver is a more relevant first check than the color menu. If the light remains off after connecting power, then check the dedicated key, model support, and other troubleshooting steps below. The charger behavior is useful because Battery Saver turns off automatically when the Chromebook is plugged in.
Can a Chromebook keyboard show animated lighting effects?
Google’s documented Chromebook controls cover keyboard-backlight brightness and choosing a static RGB color. The cited keyboard and gaming help pages do not provide a ChromeOS setting for animation, waves, cycling colors, per-key patterns, or animated zones. Therefore, you should not promise that an animation can be enabled through the standard Settings app.

Troubleshoot a keyboard light that will not change
The key does nothing
- Confirm that you are pressing the keyboard-backlight key, not the adjacent display-brightness key.
- Check whether the keyboard actually has a backlight symbol. The shortcut is not present on every Chromebook keyboard.
- Try the opposite direction. Google notes that a brightness key can appear ineffective when the light is already at its upper or lower limit.
- Check Settings > System preferences > Power for Battery Saver if you are on battery power.
If the control still fails, Google recommends restarting, testing the keyboard as a guest, and then considering a hardware reset or factory reset where appropriate. A reset can remove local data or settings, so it should not be the first response to a simple brightness question. - Open Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style and look at the bottom for Keyboard backlight.
- If the option is absent, verify that your exact model and configuration include an RGB keyboard.
- Check the manufacturer’s documentation for model-specific restrictions. For example, Google’s gaming page explicitly excludes RGB keyboard support on the ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip.
- Do not install unrelated lighting utilities or buy an accessory on the assumption that ChromeOS will control the built-in keyboard; the documented feature is hardware-dependent.
The light turns off only on battery
Check Battery Saver first. Its documented behavior is to reduce display brightness and turn off the keyboard backlight. Connecting the charger disables Battery Saver automatically, which helps confirm whether power management caused the change.

The screen changed, but the keyboard did not
You used a display-brightness shortcut. Use the separate keyboard-backlight decrease or increase key instead. The two controls are intentionally independent, so changing one does not set the other.
You expected an animation setting
Look for a model-specific feature description from the Chromebook manufacturer. Google’s standard help documents static RGB color selection, not animation controls. If the manufacturer also provides no animation procedure, there may be no supported animation setting for that configuration.
The light is present but looks different than expected
First check whether the wallpaper changed the default color. On supported RGB models, Google bases the default keyboard color on the current wallpaper.
