A gamepad can control Android games and some menus, but it does not automatically make every Android app controllable. The app must support gamepad input. Where it does, use the D-pad or stick to move through focusable controls, and use the on-screen keyboard or a physical keyboard for text entry when needed.
What a gamepad can control on Android
Android can receive input from gamepads on phones, tablets, and TVs. What happens next depends on the app or game: it must recognize and act on the controller input. A game menu or TV interface may support directional navigation while a touch-focused screen in another app does not.
At the platform level, ordinary button presses are delivered as key events, while analog stick and other range-valued inputs are delivered as motion events. The app decides what those events do. A button that jumps in one game might do something different—or nothing—in another.

There is no universal Android action for each gamepad button. The following describes common input types, not guaranteed assignments for every app or controller:

| Control | Typical input Android can report | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Face buttons, bumpers, Start and Select | Button or key events | The app or game assigns the action. |
| D-pad | Directional key codes or hat-axis motion events | Often used for menu navigation when the interface supports it; games may assign other actions. |
| Left stick | X and Y motion axes | May move a character, cursor, or focus, depending on the app. |
| Right stick | Z and RZ motion axes | Often used by games for camera or secondary movement, but the app determines its function. |
| Triggers | Left and right trigger axes; some controllers also report trigger presses as key codes | Actions vary by app, and support for different event forms can vary. |
A D-pad direction may arrive in either of two forms: as a key code or as a hat-axis motion event. This is one reason a controller can behave differently across apps, even when its buttons appear to work elsewhere.
How to navigate Android menus with a controller
- Connect the controller to the Android device using a compatible wired or wireless connection.
- Open the app or menu you want to control and try the D-pad or left stick to move the selection.
- When a control is highlighted, use the app’s indicated confirm or back button if it provides prompts. Button assignments are app-specific, so do not assume one button has the same role everywhere.
- If navigation stops at a screen or field, use touch input or another supported input method. The screen may not be designed for controller navigation.
Android framework widgets such as Button and EditText are focusable and can participate in D-pad or keyboard navigation. In a well-supported interface, directional input moves focus from one control to another. The app’s layout determines the route; if focus skips an item or moves in an unexpected direction, that is not a universal controller rule.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.

How to enter text
When a text field has focus, the app may open Android’s on-screen input method. You can use that interface if it accepts the controller, but the way to select characters is not standardized across Android devices and apps. The available evidence does not establish a universal gamepad method for opening or operating text entry.
For passwords, searches, chat, or other sustained typing, a Bluetooth or USB physical keyboard is a practical option. Android supports attached physical keyboards. On large-screen devices, text fields handled by an input method editor (IME) generally work without extra app development, though custom views or unusual keystrokes may need explicit support.

Why controller labels and behavior differ
Android documentation groups common layouts into Xbox-style, Switch-style, and PlayStation-style controller types. These are broad behavior classes, not guarantees about every model:
| Style | Common differences |
|---|---|
| Xbox-style | Generally follows the common Android mapping; the triggers are commonly labeled LT and RT. |
| Switch-style | The A/B and X/Y labels may be swapped relative to common positions, and L2/R2 may be reported differently. |
| PlayStation-style | Uses different face-button symbols, and trigger information can be sent in more than one event form. |
So a printed A or B label does not guarantee the same physical position or event across controller styles. Follow the prompts shown by the app, and check its settings if button assignments are unclear.

Check compatibility before relying on a gamepad
- Confirm that the controller connects to your particular Android device; wired and wireless compatibility can differ.
- Check whether the app or game accepts gamepad input. Android’s ability to receive controller events does not mean every app supports them.
- Test the exact screens you need, including menus, setup or onboarding, and text fields—not just gameplay.
- If a stick drifts, a trigger fires twice, or a button repeats unexpectedly, the behavior may depend on the controller and app’s handling of its events.
