To contribute your first WordPress core patch, set up a local development environment, check out current trunk, find an existing issue in WordPress Trac, make a focused and tested change, generate a .diff or .patch, and attach it to that Trac ticket. GitHub can make branching and review easier, but it does not replace Trac or the project’s canonical repository workflow.

What a WordPress core patch is

A core patch is a reviewable file that records changes to WordPress’s source code. It can add, edit, or remove lines and can be applied to a checkout so other contributors can test the proposed fix. Anyone can suggest a change in this form; only committers with commit access can change the central codebase.

The normal contribution path is therefore different from submitting a pull request to a project that merges directly on GitHub. WordPress development uses official Subversion (SVN) and Git repositories, while issue tracking and patch discussion remain centered on WordPress Trac. A successful first contribution is a small, clearly explained change tied to the right Trac ticket, with evidence that it works against current trunk.

What you need before editing core

  • A local development environment. You need a web server, PHP, a database, and a way to run WordPress locally. The exact stack can vary; the important requirement is an environment in which you can install the checkout, activate it, reproduce the reported behavior, and run the relevant tests.
  • A checkout of WordPress trunk. Trunk is the current development line. A released tag is useful for running a specific WordPress version, but it is the wrong base for a new core patch unless the ticket explicitly targets that release.
  • Repository tools. Use SVN if you want the project’s canonical repository model. Use the official Git mirror if you prefer Git branches and diff tooling.
  • A WordPress.org account with Trac access. You need to search tickets, add comments, and upload the patch file.
  • A way to test and document the change. Have a reproducible test case, the appropriate PHPUnit or integration test command for the affected component, and a place to capture screenshots if the change affects the administration area or front end.

Do not start by modifying a downloaded ZIP of a release. A release archive does not provide the repository history or an easy way to update your work as trunk changes.

How SVN, Git, GitHub, and Trac fit together

Part of the workflow Role What a first-time contributor should do
SVN Canonical WordPress repository model Use it when you want to work directly with the project’s native checkout and diff process.
Git Official mirror and alternative contributor workflow Use branches and Git’s diff tools if that is more comfortable, while keeping the work linked to a Trac ticket.
GitHub Optional collaboration and review surface for the Git mirror A pull request may help reviewers discuss code, but it is not the merge destination and does not replace the Trac ticket.
Trac Issue tracking, patch attachment, status, and project discussion Search it before coding, associate your work with an existing ticket, and attach the final .diff or .patch there.

Choosing Git does not change the submission requirement. The reviewable deliverable is still a patch attached to the corresponding Trac ticket. If you open a GitHub pull request, include the Trac ticket reference and keep the ticket updated so the project has one authoritative record of the issue and proposed fix.

Step 1: Set up and verify a trunk checkout

Install the local stack

Install the local server, PHP version, database server, and development utilities required by the WordPress contributor documentation for your operating system. Configure a local site and confirm that you can log in, load the front end, and inspect PHP and browser errors. A broken local installation makes it impossible to distinguish an environment problem from a core regression.

Check out trunk

Use the official WordPress repository instructions for either SVN or the Git mirror. Keep the checkout in a directory where you can run repository commands from its root. After the checkout, install the project’s development dependencies and initialize the test environment according to the current Core handbook instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the revision or commit you started from. This gives reviewers useful context and helps you identify whether a later trunk update introduced a conflict or changed the behavior you are testing.

Confirm that the baseline works

  1. Open the local WordPress site and verify the reported area before changing files.
  2. Reproduce the ticket’s bug, or confirm the existing behavior described by the enhancement request.
  3. Run the relevant existing test or a narrow manual check so you know the baseline result.
  4. Write down the expected result and the actual result. Those notes will become part of the Trac description or testing comment.

Step 2: Find the right Trac ticket before opening one

Search WordPress Trac using the error text, function names, component name, affected screen, and a few distinctive words from the behavior. Search both open and closed tickets: a closed report may contain a duplicate, a related fix, or a reason an earlier approach was rejected.

Use an existing ticket whenever it describes the same problem. Do not create a second ticket merely because you have a different implementation idea. Add a comment explaining your reproduction and proposed direction, then ask whether a patch would be useful if the ticket is ambiguous or inactive.

Choose a ticket that is suitable for a first patch

  • The component is identifiable, such as Administration, Editor, Media, Query, REST API, or another named area.
  • The behavior can be reproduced with a short sequence of steps or a focused test.
  • The requested change is narrow enough to review independently.
  • The ticket explains the expected behavior, or you can clarify it with the reporter and component maintainers.
  • No existing patch already solves the issue, unless you are explicitly refreshing or improving that patch.

Read the ticket’s comments, attachments, and keywords before editing. A patch that ignores an earlier compatibility concern or an agreed scope is likely to require a complete rewrite.

Step 3: Create an isolated working copy or branch

SVN workflow

With SVN, work in your trunk checkout and keep unrelated experiments out of the same directory. Before editing, update the checkout. SVN records the changed files, so a later svn diff from the repository root can produce the review file.

Git workflow

With the official Git mirror, fork and clone the mirror if you need a personal remote. Create a branch named after the Trac ticket, such as ticket-12345-fix-widget-validation. Keep the branch focused: one ticket, one coherent change, and no unrelated formatting cleanup.

Fetch trunk regularly while the ticket is active. If your branch contains several exploratory commits, you can still submit one consolidated diff; reviewers care about the resulting patch and its history of revisions, not a particular private branch layout.

When GitHub is useful

A GitHub pull request can provide inline comments and make it easier for collaborators to inspect a branch. It is optional. The pull request must point to the matching Trac ticket, and the final patch still needs to be attached to Trac. Do not assume that opening a pull request sends the change into WordPress’s merge queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Make the smallest useful change

Trace the behavior before editing

Start at the code path identified by the ticket and follow the data until you find the first incorrect assumption. Search for the relevant hook, function, class, REST route, template, or JavaScript module. Read nearby tests and related code before changing an interface.

A focused patch usually changes the smallest number of files that can correct the behavior. Avoid drive-by renaming, whitespace-only edits, broad refactors, and dependency upgrades. Those changes obscure the cause of the fix and make review harder.

Follow WordPress coding standards

Match the style of the surrounding component. Use the project’s documented PHP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, and naming conventions; preserve existing internationalization patterns; and keep comments focused on decisions that are not obvious from the code. Run the relevant coding-standard tools if the component provides them.

Do not silence a warning simply to obtain a clean result. If a warning exposes a real compatibility or type problem, fix the underlying issue or explain why the warning is unavoidable in the ticket.

Add or update tests when appropriate

A bug fix should normally include a regression test that fails before the fix and passes after it. An enhancement should test the new behavior and important edge cases. If a test is impractical, document the manual steps and explain the limitation rather than implying automated coverage exists.

Step 5: Test locally and record exactly what happened

Use a narrow test first

Run the test closest to the changed component while iterating. This shortens the feedback loop and catches syntax, assertion, and setup errors before you run a broader suite.

Run broader checks before submission

  • Run the component’s relevant PHPUnit or integration tests.
  • Run JavaScript or build checks when you changed source files that require a build step.
  • Exercise the original reproduction steps on a clean local database or a newly created test fixture.
  • Check both the expected success path and the error or permission path affected by the change.
  • For a user-interface change, test supported browsers or responsive states that are relevant to the ticket and capture before-and-after screenshots when they clarify the result.

In your Trac comment, name the commands or manual steps you actually ran and state the result. Do not write “tests pass” if you only performed a browser check, and do not claim a suite was run when it was unavailable in your environment.

Step 6: Update to current trunk before creating the patch

WordPress trunk moves while tickets are being developed. Update your SVN checkout or rebase your Git branch on the current trunk before generating the submission file. This catches conflicts and ensures reviewers are not asked to apply a patch against code that has already changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the update creates conflicts, resolve them deliberately. Re-run the reproduction and tests after resolving each conflict; a mechanically clean merge can still change behavior. If the ticket’s assumptions are no longer valid, explain the change in a new Trac comment rather than silently replacing the original approach.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 7: Generate a reviewable diff or patch

SVN command

From the SVN repository root, create the patch with the command shown in the Core handbook:

svn diff > 00000.diff

Replace 00000 with a useful name if your team or ticket uses a different convention. The resulting file should contain only the intended changes. Open it in a text editor and check that it includes new files, deleted files, and test changes where applicable.

Git equivalent

From the Git repository root, produce a diff between your updated trunk base and the working branch. For example:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
git diff trunk...HEAD > 00000.patch

Use your actual trunk reference if it has another name. If your branch contains uncommitted changes that belong in the patch, include them deliberately or commit them first so you know exactly what the command captures. Inspect the file for generated build artifacts, editor backups, credentials, local configuration, and unrelated edits; remove anything that should not be submitted.

What makes a patch usable

  • It applies cleanly to the current trunk revision or commit identified in your comment.
  • It has a concise, descriptive filename and the correct .diff or .patch extension.
  • It contains no secrets, machine-specific paths, logs, or compiled files.
  • It includes tests or clearly documented manual verification.
  • It represents one coherent solution to the ticket rather than a bundle of unrelated improvements.

Step 8: Attach the patch to Trac

  1. Open the existing Trac ticket and confirm that its summary and component still describe your change.
  2. Add a new attachment and select the generated .diff or .patch file.
  3. Use the ticket comment to explain the problem, the approach, the files or behavior affected, and the tests you ran.
  4. Include screenshots for visual changes and describe what each image demonstrates.
  5. State the trunk revision or Git base used to create the patch.
  6. Mark the attachment as a newer version when it supersedes an earlier patch, and explain what changed since the previous upload.

Keep the description factual and easy to scan. A reviewer should be able to reproduce the original problem, understand why the change addresses it, apply the patch, and verify the result without guessing your setup.

Step 9: Work through review and patch refreshes

Review may identify a coding-standard issue, an incomplete test, an API compatibility concern, or a better place to make the change. Treat comments as part of the contribution rather than as a final pass/fail event. Reply to each substantive point, make the requested revision, and upload a new patch version.

When trunk changes after your upload, refresh the patch against the latest trunk. An older patch can stop applying even when its underlying idea remains correct. Re-run the relevant tests after every refresh and note the new base revision in Trac.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no guaranteed acceptance timeline. A patch can wait for component-maintainer feedback, require design discussion, or be closed if project priorities change. Keeping the ticket current with reproducible steps, clear testing notes, and refreshed files gives it the best chance of remaining actionable.

Common first-patch mistakes and fixes

Problem Why it causes trouble Correction
Starting from a released tag The patch may target code that no longer matches trunk. Reproduce the issue on current trunk and rebuild the patch from that base.
Opening a duplicate ticket Discussion and testing become split across records. Search Trac first; attach your work to the existing ticket when it covers the same behavior.
Submitting only a GitHub pull request Core review and status tracking remain disconnected from Trac. Create or identify the matching Trac ticket, reference it in the pull request, and attach the patch to Trac.
Mixing refactoring with the fix Reviewers cannot easily see which lines solve the reported problem. Remove unrelated changes and submit separate work under separate tickets.
Leaving out test details Reviewers cannot tell whether the result is reproducible. List the exact automated commands or manual steps and their outcomes.
Ignoring coding standards Style and lint failures consume review time and can hide defects. Match the component’s conventions and run the available checks before uploading.
Allowing the patch to go stale Trunk changes can make the file fail to apply or alter its assumptions. Update to current trunk, resolve conflicts, retest, and upload a refreshed version.
Including local artifacts Generated files, configuration, or secrets can leak into the submission. Inspect the diff manually and remove anything not required to reproduce or fix the ticket.

A practical pre-submission checklist

  • Environment: The local site works, the issue is reproducible, and the checkout is current trunk.
  • Ticket: You searched Trac, selected the correct component, and are not duplicating an existing report.
  • Scope: The change is focused and excludes unrelated cleanup.
  • Standards: The code follows the conventions used by the affected component.
  • Tests: Regression or feature tests are included where appropriate, and every claimed check was actually run.
  • Freshness: You updated from trunk immediately before generating the patch.
  • Patch: The file is created from the repository root, contains the intended files only, and applies to the stated base.
  • Communication: The Trac comment explains the problem, solution, testing, base revision, and any screenshots or limitations.

What happens after your first upload

Your first patch is the beginning of a review conversation, not a promise that the code will be committed unchanged. A maintainer may request a narrower scope, a different implementation, additional tests, documentation, or a design discussion. Keep your branch or working copy organized so you can make those changes without reintroducing unrelated edits.

If the ticket is accepted, a committer handles the change to the central codebase. Until then, the most useful contribution you can make is a small patch that applies to current trunk, demonstrates the reported behavior, follows project standards, and gives reviewers enough evidence to make a decision.
