You can keep work moving between an iPhone, iPad, and Mac without using Handoff, but no single alternative does exactly the same thing. Handoff resumes a supported app task in its current context. Other Continuity features move a copied selection, transfer a saved file, or synchronize app data so you can reopen it. Choose the method according to what must survive the switch: a live task, a few copied items, a complete file, or the document’s saved data.
For a short passage, URL, or image, use Universal Clipboard. For a saved document or other file, use AirDrop. For notes, calendars, documents, and similar data, use the app’s own sync service, often through iCloud, then open the item on the destination device. If none of those preserves the needed state, save your work and manually reopen the same document, page, or message.
What changes when you avoid Handoff?
Apple describes Handoff as the feature that lets you start work on one Apple device and pick it up on another nearby device. It is designed to carry the context of a supported app task: the page, message, document, or activity that was active on the source device.

The important limitation is that Universal Clipboard, AirDrop, and app sync do not create a Handoff session. A transferred file is not a live copy of the source app, and synchronized data does not guarantee that the destination opens at the exact cursor, scroll position, or unsent state.
Choose the method by the kind of work you need to move
Move a short passage, link, or image
Copy it on the source device and paste it in the destination app with Universal Clipboard. This is intended for small selections, not a batch of files or a complete working session.
Move a saved document or several files
Send the item with AirDrop. After the transfer completes, open it on the destination device. AirDrop moves the saved item; it does not continue the source app’s unsaved state.
Open the same note, document, calendar entry, or other app data
Use the app’s supported sync service on both devices. Once the data is available on the destination, open the app and select the item. Apple identifies iCloud as a way to keep information up to date across devices, but the exact fields, conflict handling, and timing are controlled by each app.
Preserve a live, unsaved, or highly specific session
If the task depends on the current tab, insertion point, playback position, or unsent content, alternatives may not preserve it. Save the work in the app, transfer or synchronize the saved content, and then manually reopen it. That is a practical fallback rather than a guarantee that another feature will reconstruct the original session.

Prepare the devices and accounts
For the non-Handoff routes, setup depends on the method. A reliable baseline avoids confusing an account or radio problem with an unsupported workflow.
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on the devices involved when using Universal Clipboard or an app’s cross-device sync.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for Universal Clipboard and nearby transfers.
- Keep devices close together when using Universal Clipboard or AirDrop.
- Install the same app on both devices when you expect its data to open there, and sign in to the account that owns the data.
- Save the latest changes before switching. Sync and file transfer cannot move edits that exist only in an unsaved app state.
- Check the app’s own sync or storage setting rather than assuming every app synchronizes every type of data.
Apple’s Continuity features are built into the operating systems; this workflow does not require an additional transfer application, cable, drive, keyboard, or manual.

Sync is the closest alternative when your work already lives in an app’s data model. It is different from Handoff because the destination receives the app’s stored data, not a session advertisement from the source device.
- On the source device, save the note, document, event, task, or other item.
- Confirm that the app is signed in to the account used on the destination device.
- Enable the app’s supported cloud or account sync on both devices, if the app provides a separate switch.
- Allow the source to upload the latest saved state. Do not assume that synchronization is immediate; timing depends on the app, connection, and data type.
- Open the app on the destination device and select the synchronized item.
- Check the content before editing if the work is important. If the destination shows an older version, leave the source copy intact and resolve the sync issue in the app instead of overwriting it.
What sync can and cannot preserve
Sync can make the same underlying information available: a note’s text, a calendar’s events, or a document stored in an app’s account. It may not preserve transient details such as an unsent message, a temporary form entry, a precise cursor location, or an app-specific view. Those details vary by app and are not established uniformly across Apple software and third-party apps.
Copy and paste with Universal Clipboard
Universal Clipboard is the right tool for a small selection. Apple lists text and images as examples and recommends file transfer instead when you need to move multiple files.

Requirements
- Both devices must use the same Apple Account.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be enabled.
- Handoff must be enabled. This requirement does not mean Universal Clipboard resumes a Handoff task; it uses the Continuity infrastructure while transferring the copied content.
- The devices must be compatible with the required system versions.
- Keep them within 10 meters (30 feet).
- A VPN that blocks local networking can interfere with the transfer.
Procedure
- On the source iPhone, iPad, or Mac, select the text or image and choose Copy.
- Move to the destination device while keeping the devices nearby and connected.
- Tap or click the destination app’s paste command at the place where the content belongs.
- Wait briefly if the content does not appear instantly, then try Paste again. Universal Clipboard is a handoff of the copied selection, not a permanent shared clipboard history.
If you need a document, folder, or several items, save them and use AirDrop instead. Pasting a large or unsupported selection is not a substitute for file transfer.

On current iPhone and iPad software, the Handoff control is under Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (Apple may label the section AirPlay & Handoff on some versions). On current macOS, use System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff). Older macOS versions place the control in System Preferences > General.
Send a saved item with AirDrop
AirDrop is suited to a document, photo, PDF, archive, or another saved item that you want on a nearby Apple device. It does not transfer the source app’s live session, so unsaved edits, open tabs, and temporary state remain on the source unless the app saved them into the item.
- Save the latest version of the item on the source device.
- Use the source app’s sharing control and choose AirDrop.
- Select the nearby destination device and accept the transfer if prompted.
- Locate the received item on the destination device.
- Open it in an app that supports its format and continue from the saved content.
For a work file, keep the original until you verify that the received copy opens correctly. If the destination device lacks an app for the format, the transfer can succeed while opening remains a separate problem.
Continue with Handoff when it is acceptable, but avoid it when it is not available
If your reason for avoiding Handoff is that it is missing rather than a preference not to use it, check the prerequisites before abandoning it. Apple’s Handoff guidance requires compatible devices, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the same Apple Account, Handoff enabled, and an app that supports Handoff installed on both devices.

Apps Apple lists as examples
Apple names Calendar, Clock, Contacts, FaceTime, Freeform, Keynote, Mail, Maps, News, Notes, Numbers, Pages, Reminders, Safari, Stocks, and compatible third-party apps. A particular third-party app can choose whether and how to support Handoff, so installation alone does not prove compatibility.
Where the receiving control appears
- Mac: Look in the Dock or App Switcher.
- iPad: Look in the Dock.
- iPhone: Look for the Handoff banner in the App Switcher.
The source device should be unlocked, close to the receiving device, and displaying the active task. Handoff availability also depends on the system requirements for the devices and operating systems.
Troubleshoot when the workflow does not work
Universal Clipboard does nothing
- Verify that both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices.
- Bring the devices within 10 meters (30 feet).
- Disconnect or reconfigure a VPN that blocks local networking.
- Copy the content again, then paste promptly in the destination app.
- Restart both devices, which Apple lists as an additional troubleshooting step.
- If you are moving multiple files, stop trying to paste them and use AirDrop.
The synchronized item is missing or stale
- Confirm that the source changes were saved, not merely visible in an unsaved editor.
- Check that both devices use the same app account and the same storage or sync option.
- Open the app’s sync settings and verify that the relevant data type is included.
- Allow time for synchronization and avoid editing competing copies until you know which version is current.
- Use AirDrop for a fixed file when the app’s sync behavior is unclear.
AirDrop transfers the file but it will not continue the task
That result is expected. AirDrop delivered a saved item, not a live app session. Open the item in the destination app and recreate any transient state manually.
Handoff is missing from the Dock, App Switcher, or banner
- Make sure the devices meet Apple’s compatibility and system requirements.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Sign in to the same Apple Account.
- Enable Handoff in the current settings path for each operating system.
- Install a Handoff-capable app on both devices and open the task on the source.
- Unlock the source device, keep it nearby, and leave the task visible.
- Try another Apple-listed app to determine whether the problem is app-specific.
If those checks pass and the feature still does not appear, use sync, Universal Clipboard, AirDrop, or a saved-and-reopened workflow according to the type of content you need to preserve.
Practical examples
From an iPhone note to a Mac document
If the note is short, copy its text on the iPhone and paste it into the Mac document with Universal Clipboard. If the note is substantial or must remain editable as a note, let the notes app synchronize and open the same note on the Mac. The first route moves a selection; the second makes app data available.

From an iPad presentation to a Mac
Save the presentation, send the file with AirDrop, and open the received copy on the Mac. Do not expect the Mac to inherit the iPad’s current slide, unsaved speaker notes, or editing context unless those details were saved in the file.
From a Mac web page to an iPhone
Copy the URL on the Mac and paste it into the iPhone’s browser with Universal Clipboard. This transfers the address, not the Mac browser’s complete tab state, form entries, or session history.
From an iPhone calendar change to an iPad
Save the event and rely on the calendar service’s supported sync. Open Calendar on the iPad and verify the event after it becomes available. Sync behavior and timing are controlled by the app and account, not by Handoff.

Use the narrowest transfer method that fits the job. Universal Clipboard exposes the copied selection to the paired destination for the transfer window; do not copy passwords or confidential data unless you intend to paste them there. AirDrop sends the selected saved item, so check the destination before accepting. For synchronized data, review which account stores it and which devices are signed in.
For important work, keep an original until the destination copy or synchronized version has been checked. None of these alternatives guarantees instant synchronization, universal third-party support, or reconstruction of an unsaved live session. Their reliability improves when you save deliberately, use the correct account, and match the tool to the content being moved.
The simplest decision rule
- Need the same supported app task and its context? Handoff is the Apple feature designed for that.
- Need a small piece of content? Copy and paste with Universal Clipboard, remembering that Handoff must still be enabled.
- Need a complete saved item? Use AirDrop and open the received file.
- Need the same app data on another device? Use the app’s supported sync, then reopen the item.
- Need anything else? Save the work and manually reopen the saved document, page, or message on the destination.
Apple’s Handoff support article was published June 10, 2026. Device compatibility, settings names, and feature requirements can change with operating-system releases, so check the current labels on each device when a control is missing.
