You can connect a phone to satellite service in two fundamentally different ways: use satellite features built into a compatible phone, or use a carrier’s satellite coverage extension. The correct setup depends on your exact phone model, software version, carrier plan, country, and the feature you need. Satellite messaging is slower and less predictable than ordinary cellular service, so verify compatibility and practice the connection flow before going off-grid.
This guide covers Apple’s built-in satellite features, T-Mobile T-Satellite, Verizon’s Skylo-based Android service, and Verizon’s carrier-specific iPhone emergency flow. These options are not interchangeable, and none turns a phone into a guaranteed satellite-broadband device.
What “cellular satellite service” means on a phone
When people ask how to get satellite service on a phone, they may mean one of two architectures:

Some phones contain the hardware and software needed to exchange limited messages through a satellite network when both cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable. Apple supports this on iPhone 14 or later, with availability varying by feature, region, and the country in which the phone was purchased. The supported functions can include emergency texting, roadside assistance, messaging friends and family, and location sharing.

Apple identifies Globalstar and its affiliates or third-party network providers as the satellite network providers for these features. The phone connects directly to the satellite; your normal mobile carrier does not have to provide the satellite link for Apple’s built-in functions.
Carrier satellite coverage extensions
A carrier satellite extension keeps your existing mobile line and, in selected areas, routes supported texts or apps through a satellite partner when terrestrial coverage is absent. T-Mobile T-Satellite and Verizon’s Skylo-based Android service use this model. Compatibility, plan eligibility, supported apps, geography, and emergency behavior are controlled by the carrier.
A carrier extension therefore cannot be assumed to work on every unlocked or recent phone. A phone may have satellite-capable hardware yet still be excluded from a carrier’s supported-device list.
Choose the right route before you leave coverage
| Route | Compatible hardware | Typical functions | Where it works | Important requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple built-in satellite | iPhone 14 or later, subject to model-origin restrictions | Emergency texting, roadside assistance, supported messaging, location sharing | Feature- and region-specific; not available on every model worldwide | Compatible iOS, outdoor sky view, and feature availability in your region |
| T-Mobile T-Satellite | Only devices listed as compatible by T-Mobile | Texting, photo messaging in supported apps, location sharing, emergency contact, WhatsApp voice chat, selected apps | Most outdoor areas of the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Japan where the sky is visible, according to T-Mobile | Eligible plan or $10-per-month-per-line add-on, compatible device, supported apps |
| Verizon/Skylo Android | Selected Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models | Basic two-way text messaging and satellite SOS text to 911 | Non-coverage areas in the continental United States, Hawaii, and Alaska, with possible gaps in parts of Alaska | Supported model, Google Messages as default, and line of sight to a satellite |
| Verizon iPhone satellite SOS | iPhone 14 or newer under Verizon’s stated support flow | Emergency text to 911 after an unsuccessful call attempt | Contiguous United States, Hawaii, and Alaska; Verizon notes possible gaps in parts of Alaska | iOS 18 or newer, active service, cellular data on, Airplane Mode off, and outdoor sky view |
Carrier coverage maps and device lists change. Check the current support page for your carrier immediately before travel rather than relying on a phone’s age, an old advertisement, or another user’s experience.
Prepare any phone for satellite use
Complete these checks while you still have ordinary connectivity:
- Identify the exact model number and the country or region where it was purchased.
- Install the latest operating-system version supported by the phone.
- Confirm that your carrier line and plan qualify for the satellite feature or add-on.
- Install or select the messaging app required by the service.
- Set up emergency contacts and Family Sharing where the platform supports them.
- Learn the on-screen connection flow and run a demo if one is available.
- Carry the phone where you can hold it outside, not buried in a backpack or pocket.
- Tell companions that satellite messages may be delayed and may not deliver at all in obstructed terrain.
A clear view of both sky and horizon is the most important physical requirement. Trees, cliffs, buildings, mountains, canyons, and dense foliage can slow or block the link. Plan a place where you can stop safely and hold the phone naturally while following its alignment instructions.
Connect an iPhone using Apple’s built-in satellite features
Check model and regional eligibility
Apple says all iPhone 14 or later models support its satellite features, but availability also depends on region and model origin. Apple states that these features are not offered on iPhone models purchased in Armenia, Belarus, mainland China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, or Russia. Hong Kong and Macao have a separate model restriction. Do not assume that importing an otherwise compatible iPhone makes the feature available in your country.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Update and configure the phone before losing coverage
- Update the iPhone to the latest compatible iOS release.
- Turn on iMessage before leaving cellular and Wi-Fi coverage if you want to use iMessage via satellite.
- Set up emergency contacts and Family Sharing if you intend to use those functions.
- Open Apple’s Satellite Connection Demo outdoors in open terrain. The emergency SOS portion of the demo does not call emergency services.
Open the satellite connection screen
When both cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, open Control Center, tap the Cellular button, then tap Satellite and choose the feature you need. You can also open Settings and tap Satellite. The Satellite item in Settings does not appear while cellular or Wi-Fi service is available, so do not treat its absence at home as proof that the phone is incompatible.
For satellite messaging, open Messages when prompted and follow the connection instructions. The phone displays directions if you need to turn your body or change orientation to maintain the link.
Hold the phone for a real connection
Go outside with an unobstructed view. Hold the iPhone naturally in your hand and follow the on-screen alignment guidance. Do not put it in a pocket, vehicle console, or backpack while it is trying to connect. Light foliage may slow the connection; dense foliage, hills, mountains, canyons, and tall structures may prevent it.

Apple also warns that some messages can take several minutes. Keep the phone aligned until the transfer finishes instead of walking into cover immediately after tapping Send.
Understand Apple satellite-message limits
iMessage via satellite requires iMessage to have been enabled before coverage was lost. For iMessage delivery, Apple says the recipient needs iOS 18 or later. SMS replies can reach a non-Apple phone or a device running iOS 17.6 or later, subject to network-provider support. SMS availability depends on the provider, and fees may apply.
The described satellite messaging experience does not support photos, videos, audio messages, stickers, or group messages. Compose short, plain-text messages and include your location or a clear request when safety matters.
Set up T-Mobile T-Satellite
Confirm the line, phone, and plan
T-Mobile describes T-Satellite as a service for texting and selected satellite-ready apps on compatible devices. Its service page says access is included with specified plans or can be added for $10 per month per line. The add-on renews monthly automatically and can be canceled in the T-Life app; those terms can change.
Start by checking T-Mobile’s current compatible-device list and your line’s plan eligibility. Do not infer compatibility from the phone’s release year, unlocked status, or the presence of a satellite-related menu on another model.
Use supported apps normally
T-Mobile presents the experience as beginning with a compatible phone, an eligible line, and the normal supported apps rather than a universal manual satellite-selection switch. Supported functions listed by T-Mobile include texting, photo messaging through apps such as iMessage and Google Messages, location sharing, emergency contact, WhatsApp voice chat, and selected weather and mapping tools.
Install updates and sign in to the apps before leaving coverage. If a particular app is not listed as satellite-ready for your device and plan, assume it may not work over the satellite link.
Know the T-Satellite coverage and performance boundaries
T-Mobile says T-Satellite works in most outdoor areas of the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Japan where the user can see the sky. “Most” does not mean continuous coverage at every trail, road, or shoreline. Buildings, terrain, foliage, satellite availability, and temporary time-outs can create gaps.

Data speeds are limited. Apps may load slowly, fail to load, or behave differently from their terrestrial versions. T-Mobile warns that emergency service, including text to 911, may be delayed, limited, or unavailable. If you have any terrestrial emergency option, use it first and follow the phone’s emergency instructions.
Connect selected Android phones through Verizon and Skylo
Verify that your model is on the supported list
Verizon lists Skylo satellite service for these selected Android phones:
- Samsung Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, S25+, and S25 Ultra
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7
- Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold
- Google Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL
The list is model-specific. A different regional variant, storage tier, or carrier edition may not qualify, so confirm the exact device with Verizon before departure.

Prepare Google Messages and line of sight
- Install current software for the phone and Google Messages.
- Make Google Messages the default messaging app.
- Confirm that your line is eligible for Verizon’s Skylo service.
- Move outdoors to a location with a clear line of sight to a satellite.
- Follow the phone’s prompts and keep the phone exposed and oriented toward the sky while messaging.
Verizon describes this route as basic two-way text messaging. MMS, RCS, and attachments are not supported, so use plain text rather than photos, videos, group media, or rich-message features.

Use Skylo satellite SOS
For an emergency, Verizon’s support flow says to dial 911 and follow the on-screen prompt if the call cannot connect. Answer the questionnaire, maintain line of sight, and continue the conversation in Google Messages. Verizon says Skylo SOS messaging has no extra fee.
Verizon lists service in non-coverage areas of the continental United States, Hawaii, and Alaska, while noting possible gaps in parts of Alaska. This is carrier guidance for the listed phones and should not be generalized to other Android devices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Verizon’s separate iPhone satellite SOS flow
Verizon documents a carrier-specific process that is narrower than Apple’s complete set of built-in satellite features. Verizon says its flow requires an iPhone 14 or newer with iOS 18 or newer, active service with cellular data turned on, Airplane Mode off, and an outdoor clear line of sight.
- Go outdoors in the contiguous United States, Hawaii, or Alaska.
- Attempt to call 911.
- If the call cannot connect, use the emergency-text option offered on screen.
- Complete the emergency questionnaire accurately.
- Follow the alignment prompts and keep line of sight while continuing the conversation in Messages.
Verizon notes that the service may not work in parts of Alaska. These prerequisites apply to Verizon’s documented SOS flow; they are not universal requirements for every Apple satellite feature or every carrier.

Expect delay, not broadband
Satellite links used by phones are designed for limited communication. A short text can take 30 seconds or more in ideal conditions and several minutes in some conditions. Carrier services may time out, queue a message, or deliver only after you regain a better view of the sky.
Do not plan on ordinary web browsing, video calls, large downloads, or reliable media uploads unless the specific carrier explicitly supports that function. Even when an app is listed as compatible, its interface and response time may differ from terrestrial service.
Use short, resilient messages
- Write plain text with the essential facts first.
- Send one recipient at a time when group messaging is unsupported.
- Include your name, location, condition, intended destination, and next check-in time when appropriate.
- Avoid attachments unless your exact service explicitly supports them.
- Wait for a delivery indication before assuming the recipient has received the message.
Do not treat satellite SOS as guaranteed emergency delivery
Apple, T-Mobile, and Verizon each describe conditions under which emergency communication can be delayed, limited, or unavailable. Terrain, foliage, buildings, network congestion, weather effects on visibility, and device or plan restrictions can all matter. If another emergency channel is available, use it and follow local emergency guidance.
Troubleshoot a failed satellite connection
No Satellite option appears
- For an iPhone, check that it is an iPhone 14 or later and that you are actually outside both cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Apple’s Satellite item may be hidden while either service is available.
- Check the phone’s purchase region, especially for iPhones from countries Apple excludes.
- For a carrier service, verify the exact model, plan, add-on, and supported app. A generic Android or unlocked-phone assumption is insufficient.
The phone cannot acquire a satellite
- Move away from buildings, vehicles, cliffs, dense vegetation, and canyon walls.
- Raise the phone into an open area with a broad view of the sky and horizon.
- Follow the on-screen turn or alignment instruction instead of holding the phone flat in a bag.
- Keep the phone still and exposed long enough for the transfer; an ideal message can already take 30 seconds or more.
The message remains pending
Keep the connection screen open, shorten the message if possible, and try again from a more open position. On Apple devices, check that iMessage was enabled before coverage disappeared. On Verizon’s supported Android route, remove attachments and ensure Google Messages is still the default app. On T-Mobile, confirm that the app is one of the carrier’s currently supported satellite-ready apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe recipient cannot reply
Apple’s iMessage path requires iOS 18 or later on the recipient for iMessage delivery. A non-Apple phone or an iPhone on iOS 17.6 or later may receive SMS replies when the carrier supports satellite SMS. Group messages and media are not supported in the described Apple satellite messaging experience, while Verizon’s Skylo Android route excludes MMS, RCS, and attachments.
An emergency attempt fails
Use the exact emergency flow shown by your phone or carrier. Verizon’s documented routes begin with an attempted 911 call and then offer emergency text if the call cannot connect. Apple’s demo does not contact emergency services. Do not use a demo as a test of live emergency dispatch.
Quick Recap
Pre-departure checklist
- Record the exact phone model and purchase region.
- Update the operating system and required messaging app.
- Confirm carrier plan, add-on, and country coverage on the current provider page.
- Enable iMessage before losing coverage if using Apple satellite messaging.
- Set emergency contacts and Family Sharing where supported.
- Run Apple’s Satellite Connection Demo if you have an eligible iPhone.
- Practice finding the satellite controls while still at home, then remember that some controls appear only after coverage is lost.
- Pack a power bank and keep the phone accessible outside your bag.
- Agree on a check-in schedule that allows for delays and failed attempts.
- Carry a second emergency method when your route, weather, or terrain makes a phone satellite link unreliable.
