To use Bluetooth in a car, turn on Bluetooth on your phone, put the car stereo in pairing mode, select the car on your phone, and accept the matching prompts. Then start audio and, if necessary, choose the car as the playback destination. Pair while parked: vehicle menus and supported features vary, so use the owner’s manual for model-specific instructions.
Pair your phone with the car
- Park before setup. Keep the vehicle stationary while using the phone or infotainment menus. For Android Auto setup, Google specifically says the car should be in Park with its infotainment system on, and setup should be completed before driving. Google’s Android Auto setup guide gives those instructions.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your phone. Open the phone’s Settings and enable Bluetooth. Exact menu names differ between phones and software versions.
- Start pairing from the car. On the stereo or infotainment display, open its phone or Bluetooth settings and choose an option such as “Add phone,” “Pair device,” or “Connect phone.” Labels vary by vehicle; Apple notes that most cars require setup from the car’s display. Follow the car’s manual if the menus are unclear. Apple’s car-connection instructions cover this process.
- Select the car on your phone. Tap the vehicle’s displayed name in the phone’s list of Bluetooth devices. Accept the matching pairing prompts on both screens. If the car requests a PIN or passcode, use the one shown on its display or specified in its manual; there is no universal code to assume.
- Confirm the connection. The car or phone should show that the devices are connected. Some vehicles save paired phones and may reconnect automatically later, but connection behavior depends on the car and phone.
Play music or podcasts through the car
Pairing establishes a Bluetooth connection, but it does not always mean audio is playing through the car. Open a music or podcast app and start playback. If sound still comes from the phone, choose the car’s Bluetooth connection as the playback destination on the phone, then check that the stereo is set to its Bluetooth audio source. On iPhone, Apple explains how to select a connected Bluetooth accessory and adjust playback controls in Play audio from your iPhone on a Bluetooth accessory.
Bluetooth audio streaming is vehicle-dependent. A car may support hands-free calling but not music streaming, or may offer a different combination of features. Check the manual for media support and source-selection instructions. Apple also describes USB playback and built-in vehicle apps as alternatives in Play music and podcasts in your car.

Make hands-free calls
When the car supports Bluetooth calling, use the controls provided by that vehicle, such as its infotainment screen, voice controls, or steering-wheel buttons. The available controls and whether the car can access contacts vary by model and phone. Pairing alone does not guarantee that every calling feature is supported. Consult the vehicle manual for call setup and supported functions.

Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, or USB: which should you use?
These are related ways to connect a phone to a car, but they are not interchangeable. Choose based on what both the vehicle and phone support and whether you want basic audio and calls or a car-display experience.

Fix common car Bluetooth connection problems
The phone cannot find the car
- Put the car into new-device pairing mode using its own screen or controls; simply turning on the stereo may not make it discoverable.
- Keep the phone near the car and follow the vehicle’s pairing instructions.
- Check the manual for the correct menu and whether the car can accept another paired device.
The car appears, but pairing fails
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the phone’s Settings, then try again.
- Restart the phone and repeat the car’s pairing steps.
- Confirm that the prompts match on both devices. If a code is requested, use the one displayed by the vehicle or specified in its manual.
Apple includes restarting the device and toggling Bluetooth among its troubleshooting suggestions in its car-connection guidance.

The stereo may favor a phone already saved or previously connected. Check the car’s saved-device or preferred-phone settings. Apple also suggests renaming an iPhone when multiple devices have been paired, which can make the correct phone easier to identify. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.

The phone says connected, but music comes from the phone
- Start playback in the audio app.
- On the phone, select the car as the Bluetooth audio destination.
- On the stereo, select Bluetooth as the current audio source and adjust the car’s volume.
For iPhone, Apple shows how to select the playback destination in its Bluetooth audio instructions.
It still will not connect
Check for phone software updates and ask the vehicle manufacturer whether the stereo has a firmware update. If several phones are saved, remove an unused device or rename the phone you want to connect, following the car manual. Apple recommends checking for updates to both the device and car stereo in its connection troubleshooting guidance.

What if the car has no built-in Bluetooth?
If the stereo lacks Bluetooth, a Bluetooth FM transmitter is one possible retrofit: it receives audio from the phone and sends it to the car radio over an FM frequency. Some models also support hands-free calls or connect through an AUX input, but features and connections differ by model. For example, Scosche’s BTFreq product documentation describes FM transmission and, for the documented variant, an AUX connection. Before buying any transmitter, confirm that the car has a working FM radio and the required power connection; check AUX compatibility if you intend to use that connection. If the car’s built-in Bluetooth already works, an accessory is not needed just to pair a phone.
