When cellular and Wi-Fi service are unavailable, a phone can connect directly to satellites only if its hardware, software, carrier and country support the feature. The practical choices are phone-native satellite services—Emergency SOS and, in some places, ordinary messages—or a separate two-way satellite communicator such as the Garmin inReach Mini 2.

For any option, go outdoors with an unobstructed view of the sky and horizon. Satellite communication is slower and less tolerant of obstructions than a cellular connection. Check eligibility before leaving coverage, prepare emergency information, and know which workflow is intended for emergencies versus routine messages.

Which satellite connection should you use?

Your best route depends on what you need to send and how often you will be outside coverage.

iPhone satellite features Emergency SOS; in supported regions, Messages, roadside assistance and Find My location sharing iPhone 14 or later, supported country and carrier conditions Apple may apply introductory or regional terms; check the terms shown on your device
Google Satellite SOS Emergency contact through the local emergency-number workflow Pixel 9-series phones except Pixel 9a, in countries listed by Google and subject to carrier and government conditions Availability and terms vary by region
Dedicated communicator Regular two-way text, location tracking, weather and interactive SOS A device such as Garmin inReach Mini 2 using the Iridium network; phone pairing is optional An active satellite subscription is required

A phone feature is convenient when you already carry a compatible handset and need occasional contact. A dedicated communicator is the more dependable model for recurring conversations, scheduled tracking or a separate SOS device because its satellite radio does not depend on a cellular tower.

iPhone requirements

Emergency SOS via satellite is supported on iPhone 14 and later in supported regions. Newer hardware alone does not guarantee service: country, carrier and feature availability matter. In regions where Apple enables them, the same satellite connection can also support Messages, roadside assistance and Find My location sharing.

Install the latest available iOS update before a trip. In Settings, look for the satellite demonstration option where it is offered. Running the demo while you still have service lets you see the positioning prompts without creating an emergency contact. Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts at the same time, because those details can help responders and contacts understand the situation.

Pixel requirements

Google Satellite SOS works on Pixel 9-series phones except Pixel 9a. Google lists service in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and specified European and other countries. The list is subject to carrier and government conditions, so confirm your exact country and carrier rather than relying on the phone family name.

Dedicated communicator requirements

A device such as Garmin inReach Mini 2 uses the Iridium satellite network rather than the ground-based LTE network used by a phone. Create and activate the required satellite plan before the trip. Pairing the communicator with the Garmin Messenger app over Bluetooth lets your phone provide the keyboard and screen, while the communicator supplies the satellite link. The communicator can also operate as the separate device for messaging, tracking and SOS.

How to use an iPhone in an emergency

Use the emergency workflow only when you need emergency assistance. If a normal call can connect, use it first; the satellite procedure is the fallback when the call cannot complete.

  1. Try the local emergency number. Dial the emergency number used in the country where you are. Wait for the call attempt to fail or for the phone to indicate that a connection is unavailable.
  2. Choose Emergency Text via Satellite. The option appears when the iPhone detects that a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is not available. Select it to begin the satellite emergency questionnaire.
  3. Answer the questionnaire accurately. Provide the information requested about the incident, people involved and your location. The answers are formatted for emergency responders, so use the choices that most closely describe what is happening.
  4. Move into the open. Go outside and find a place with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Dense foliage, hills, mountains, canyons and tall structures can block the satellite path.
  5. Follow the on-screen direction arrows. Hold the iPhone naturally in your hand and turn left or right as the display indicates. Apple says you do not need to raise your arm or hold the phone overhead. Keep the phone out of a pocket or backpack while it is transmitting.
  6. Keep the phone positioned until the exchange finishes. Satellite messages can take time to send and receive. Remain in the open and follow new positioning prompts so the emergency center can receive the information and send a reply.

Apple’s guidance is explicit: “Be outside with a clear view of the sky and the horizon.” Treat that as an operating requirement, not merely a suggestion.

How to send a non-emergency iPhone message by satellite

Messages via satellite is separate from Emergency SOS. It is available only in regions where Apple enables the feature and for the contacts and message types supported there.

  • Explore with peace of mind knowing you can trigger an interactive SOS message with location coordinates to Garmin Response℠, a 24/7-staffed international coordination center, for help in an emergency (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
  • Exchange photos, texts and voice messages without cell service; taking and sending photos requires pairing your inReach device with your compatible smartphone by using the Garmin Messenger app (active satellite subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
  • Rugged design features a high-resolution and scratch-resistant color touchscreen; can withstand impact, extreme weather and harsh temperatures (IP67 water rating)
  • Internal, rechargeable lithium battery supports up to 350 hours with 10-minute inReach tracking and up to 95 hours in performance messaging mode
  1. Open Messages while off-grid. When the iPhone has no cellular or Wi-Fi service, open the conversation you want to use. If satellite messaging is available for your location and device, the phone displays a prompt to connect.
  2. Start the satellite connection. Tap the prompt and follow the positioning instructions. The display indicates how to turn the phone toward the satellite.
  3. Remain outdoors. Keep a clear sky view, hold the phone naturally and avoid putting it inside clothing, a vehicle or a pack.
  4. Send only after the connection is established. Satellite messaging has limited bandwidth. Short, essential text is more practical than long exchanges or media-heavy content.

Do not use a routine Messages conversation as a substitute for an emergency request. If someone needs urgent assistance, return to the Emergency SOS workflow and try the local emergency number first.

How to use Google Satellite SOS on a Pixel

On a supported Pixel 9-series phone other than Pixel 9a, Satellite SOS starts from the emergency-call process.

  1. Dial the local emergency number. Use the emergency number for the country where you are located.
  2. Wait for the no-network state. If the phone has neither mobile service nor Wi-Fi, the emergency interface offers Satellite SOS.
  3. Select Satellite SOS, then Use Satellite SOS and Start. These controls begin Google’s satellite emergency flow.
  4. Complete the emergency questionnaire. Answer each question so the emergency service receives a structured description of the incident.
  5. Choose whether to notify contacts. The flow lets you decide whether designated contacts should be informed.
  6. Follow the positioning prompts. Move according to the directions on screen until the Pixel establishes the satellite link.
  7. Stay outside for replies. Keep a clear view of the sky while waiting for the emergency service to respond. Hills, buildings, trees and other obstructions can interrupt the exchange.

Google’s country list can change and is conditional on carrier and government arrangements. Confirm availability before relying on the feature for a particular trip.

When a dedicated communicator is the better choice

Phone-native satellite functions are designed around compatible models and limited supported services. A dedicated communicator is intended for repeated off-grid use. Garmin describes LTE as a ground-based system that reaches a phone through cell towers; inReach instead uses the Iridium satellite network.

What inReach adds

  • Two-way text: Send and receive messages beyond cellular coverage.
  • Tracking: Share location points on a schedule when your trip requires someone to follow progress.
  • Weather: Request weather information through the satellite service.
  • Interactive SOS: Open a two-way conversation with Garmin Response rather than sending a one-way alert.
  • Independent radio: The communicator remains the satellite endpoint even if the paired phone is out of battery, damaged or not present.

Using the phone as the interface

Pair the inReach Mini 2 with the Garmin Messenger app over Bluetooth before leaving coverage. The phone then supplies a larger keyboard and display, while the inReach handles the satellite transmission. Carry both devices where they can be reached quickly and keep the communicator itself exposed to the sky when sending.

Subscription requirement

An active satellite subscription is required for inReach messaging, tracking, weather and SOS services. Activate the plan, complete account setup and test the pairing and message workflow before departure. Without an active plan, the communicator is not a working replacement for a phone’s emergency feature.

Why satellite messages can be slow or fail

Satellite communication requires a line of sight between the device and the sky. Apple reports that, in ideal conditions, a message can take 30 seconds or more. Under light or medium foliage, transmission can take several minutes. Dense foliage may block the link entirely.

  • Forest canopy: Move toward a clearing or the edge of the trees. Even when light passes through, leaves can weaken the signal.
  • Hills and mountains: A slope can hide the satellite. Walk to higher or more open ground if it is safe to do so.
  • Canyons: The surrounding rock may block the required angle. A wider section or open rim is preferable.
  • Tall structures: Buildings, towers and vehicles can obstruct the horizon. Step away from them.
  • Incorrect orientation: Turn the phone or communicator in the direction shown by the arrows rather than pointing it randomly.
  • Impatience: Ending the attempt after a few seconds can interrupt a transfer that simply needs more time.

Satellite availability also varies with latitude, country approvals and the service’s supported network. A clear sky improves the physical link but cannot enable a feature that is not authorized for your model or region.

Choosing between phone satellite service and a communicator

Your situation More suitable route Reason
A rare emergency on a trip with a compatible phone Phone-native Emergency SOS No extra radio is needed, provided the model, region and service are supported and the phone is charged.
Occasional short personal updates where Messages via satellite is offered Supported iPhone satellite messaging It uses the phone you already carry, but regional feature limits and slow transfers apply.
Regular two-way contact, tracking or weather requests Dedicated communicator These functions are central to inReach service rather than limited regional phone features.
You need an SOS device separate from your phone Dedicated communicator The communicator supplies its own satellite radio and can be used as a separate endpoint.
You are carrying a Pixel outside the listed Satellite SOS countries Do not rely on Pixel Satellite SOS Google’s feature is conditional on the published country, carrier and government availability.

Prepare your phone and communicator before departure

  1. Verify the exact model. Check that the iPhone is 14 or later, or that the Pixel is a supported Pixel 9-series model other than Pixel 9a. Confirm the model in the device’s About screen rather than relying on its marketing name.
  2. Confirm the country and carrier. Review the current availability information for the destination. A feature that works at home may not be enabled across a border.
  3. Install updates. Update iOS or Android and the relevant messaging application before leaving reliable service.
  4. Configure emergency information. Complete Medical ID and emergency contacts on iPhone. On Pixel, review the emergency-information and contact settings used by the Satellite SOS flow.
  5. Run the available demonstration. Use the iPhone satellite demo in Settings when it is offered. For an inReach, pair the devices and send a test message while coverage and support are available.
  6. Charge every device. Satellite sessions can last longer than cellular messages because of positioning and retries. Start with the phone and communicator fully charged and carry an appropriate power source.
  7. Explain the plan to companions. Tell someone which device you will use, what your check-in schedule is and what should happen if they receive an SOS notification.
  8. Pack for access. Store the phone and communicator where you can reach them without burying them under equipment. During a transmission, take the device outside the pack.

Troubleshoot a failed satellite connection

The satellite option does not appear

Check the model, operating-system version, country and carrier first. On Pixel, ensure Google Messages is the default messaging app. On iPhone, verify that you are using the supported emergency or Messages workflow rather than expecting a satellite icon during normal cellular service. If the feature is not offered for the device or region, changing position will not make it appear.

The phone cannot acquire a signal

Move into open ground, away from buildings, vehicles, cliffs and dense vegetation. Hold the device naturally and follow the arrows. Do not place it in a pocket or backpack. Remain still long enough for the transfer; ideal conditions can still require 30 seconds or more, and foliage can extend the wait to several minutes.

A message starts but does not complete

Keep the same conversation open and follow any new orientation prompt. If the obstruction is permanent, relocate to a safer clearing or a broader section of terrain. For an emergency, do not abandon the emergency workflow for ordinary messaging; continue trying the designated SOS process and use any available normal emergency call when it can connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The communicator works only when the phone is nearby

Check Bluetooth pairing and the Garmin Messenger app, then verify that the inReach subscription is active. The phone is only the interface; the inReach must itself have a sky view for the satellite transfer. If the phone battery fails, use the communicator’s own controls and display.

Important limits to understand

  • No universal phone-to-satellite switch: A phone cannot connect simply because cellular service is absent. The manufacturer must include the required satellite hardware and software, and the service must be enabled in your region.
  • Emergency SOS is not ordinary chat: Emergency workflows collect structured information and connect through the emergency-service process. Routine messaging does not provide the same responder path.
  • Coverage is not identical to terrestrial coverage: A clear sky improves the connection but does not remove country, carrier, network or subscription restrictions.
  • Latency is normal: Waiting tens of seconds or several minutes does not necessarily mean the service has failed.
  • Battery matters: Repeated positioning attempts and a prolonged exchange consume power. Preserve charge for the return journey or additional emergency communication.

A practical decision rule

If you have a supported iPhone or Pixel and only need a possible emergency link, prepare the phone’s satellite workflow before leaving coverage. If you expect regular two-way messages, tracking, weather requests or a device that remains useful independently of your phone, carry a dedicated communicator with an active satellite plan. In either case, the decisive field steps are the same: get outside, obtain a clear view of the sky and horizon, follow the positioning prompts and allow enough time for a low-bandwidth connection to complete.
