Start with Xiaomi’s standard nearby-device flow, but do not assume that instructions for an older Mi Door and Window Sensor also apply to Sensor 3. Keep the sensor beside your phone, turn on Bluetooth, open Xiaomi Home, and accept the discovery prompt if it appears. If it does not, use the plus button to add the device manually. The official Xiaomi pages currently available describe general onboarding and earlier sensor generations; they do not verify Sensor 3’s radio protocol, reset gesture, battery specification, gateway model, or region-specific setup. Check the model number and market shown on the packaging or device before selecting anything in the app.
What you need to know before pairing
Xiaomi Home can add many devices automatically when they are close to the phone. Xiaomi’s general support instructions say to open the app with the device nearby, accept the on-screen OK prompt when discovery appears, and keep Bluetooth enabled for the entire process. See Xiaomi’s “How do I add a new device?” support article for the current general flow.
That procedure is a starting point rather than a Sensor 3-specific confirmation. The official pages located for this topic do not state how Sensor 3 enters pairing mode, which gateway it uses, whether it can connect directly to a phone, or whether requirements differ by country. Xiaomi has used different connectivity arrangements across earlier door and window sensors, so choosing a similar-looking entry in Xiaomi Home can lead to a failed or incorrect setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Have the sensor, its packaging, and your phone together so you can check the exact model and region.
- Install or update Xiaomi Home from your phone’s official app store and sign in to the Xiaomi account you intend to use.
- Turn on Bluetooth before beginning. Xiaomi’s support wording is: “Make sure your phone’s Bluetooth is on during the whole process.”
- Keep the sensor close to the phone while discovery is running.
- Be ready to grant the Bluetooth, location, Wi-Fi, or other permissions Xiaomi Home requests. The exact permission names depend on your phone’s operating system and app version.
Check the exact model and region first
Look at the label on the sensor, box, or regional documentation. Record the full product name and model number rather than relying on the shortened name shown in a shop listing. Also note the country or region selected in Xiaomi Home. A device sold for one market may not appear in another region’s catalog, even when the product name is similar.

Do not select an older “Mi Door and Window Sensor” or “Door and Window Sensor 2” entry simply because “Sensor 3” is missing. Xiaomi’s documentation shows why generation matching matters:
| Documented generation or source | Connectivity information stated by Xiaomi | What this means for Sensor 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Original Mi Window and Door Sensor | The official product page says it requires a ZigBee gateway. View the product specifications. | This does not establish that Sensor 3 uses ZigBee or the same gateway. |
| Door and Window Sensor 2 | A Xiaomi Mexico regional support page distinguishes Sensor 2 as Bluetooth-capable. Read the regional FAQ. | This does not prove direct-phone pairing, gateway compatibility, or any other requirement for Sensor 3. |
| Door and Window Sensor 3 | The official sources used here do not specify its protocol, gateway, reset action, battery, or regional availability. | Confirm the model-specific catalog entry or manual before buying or configuring a hub. |
If the printed model number does not match the app entry exactly, stop and resolve that mismatch first. It is safer to identify the product than to force a pairing attempt with another generation.
Step-by-step: try the normal Xiaomi Home pairing flow
- Put the sensor beside your phone. Keep the two parts of the contact sensor together while you begin. The purpose is to keep the device within reliable discovery range; Xiaomi’s general guidance does not publish a Sensor 3 distance specification.
- Enable Bluetooth. Turn it on in the phone’s quick settings or system settings, then leave it on throughout the process. Do not switch it off after the app has found the device.
- Open Xiaomi Home and sign in. Use the account and home location where you want the sensor to appear. If the app asks for a region, choose the region that corresponds to the device’s sale or documentation, unless Xiaomi’s model-specific instructions tell you otherwise.
- Accept automatic discovery. Xiaomi Home may show a nearby-device card with an OK button. Tap it and follow every instruction displayed by the current app version.
- Use the add-device control if no card appears. Tap the + button in the upper-right corner, choose the add-device option, and check the nearby-device list. If the sensor is not listed there, use the app’s search field and enter the exact product name or model number printed on the device.
- Choose only a matching entry. Compare the generation and model text in the result with the label on your sensor. Do not substitute the original Mi sensor or Sensor 2 for Sensor 3 just to continue the wizard.
- Grant requested permissions. Allow the Bluetooth, location, Wi-Fi, or nearby-device permissions that Xiaomi Home requests for discovery. If you deny a permission, the app may not be able to scan even though Bluetooth is switched on.
- Complete the in-app instructions. The app may ask you to name the device, choose a room, or assign it to a home. Follow the exact prompts shown; labels and screens can change between app versions and operating systems.
- Wait for the completion screen. Do not close Xiaomi Home or move the sensor away while the app is adding it. When the device tile appears in the selected room, open it and confirm that its status is available rather than offline.
Because Xiaomi has not published a Sensor 3-specific procedure in the sources available for this guide, the app’s current model-matched instructions take precedence over any generic button sequence found elsewhere.
If Xiaomi Home does not discover Sensor 3
Check Bluetooth and permissions
Verify Bluetooth in the phone’s system settings, not only the icon inside Xiaomi Home. Then reopen the app and respond to every permission request. Xiaomi’s general smart-home guidance notes that discovery can depend on permissions such as Bluetooth, location, and Wi-Fi. Permission behavior varies by Android or iOS version and by Xiaomi Home release, so use the wording your phone presents.

Use the manual search path
From Xiaomi Home, tap +, choose to add a device, and search for the exact model. Search by the full printed name if the short name fails. Check both the nearby-device list and the manual catalog. If Sensor 3 is absent from both, changing to a similar generation is not a valid fix; verify the selected region and the product label instead.
Review the account’s region
Open Xiaomi Home’s account or region settings and compare the selected market with the packaging and documentation. A catalog mismatch can prevent discovery or hide the model entirely. Changing regions can affect the devices and homes already configured in the account, so record your current setup before making a change and use Xiaomi’s own regional instructions where available.
Move the phone and sensor closer
Keep the sensor immediately beside the phone during the first scan. Remove unnecessary distance and avoid starting the process in another room. This is a practical discovery check, not evidence that Sensor 3 has a particular range specification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRestart the app’s discovery attempt
Close Xiaomi Home, reopen it, confirm Bluetooth is still on, and repeat the add-device path. If the operating system shows Xiaomi Home as restricted from nearby devices or location, change that permission and retry. Do not perform an undocumented factory reset merely because discovery failed; the official sources do not establish Sensor 3’s reset gesture.

Gateway questions: do you need a hub?
Do not purchase a gateway until the exact Sensor 3 model and protocol are confirmed. Xiaomi’s original Mi Window and Door Sensor page explicitly specifies a ZigBee gateway, while Xiaomi’s regional support distinguishes Sensor 2 as Bluetooth-capable. Those facts demonstrate that generations are not interchangeable; they do not identify the gateway for Sensor 3.
A gateway can be important for some Xiaomi Bluetooth child devices. Xiaomi’s general smart-home integration guidance explains that a compatible gateway can support functions such as remote viewing, notifications, and automations. The same guidance does not verify which gateway, if any, Sensor 3 requires. Treat a gateway as a model-specific compatibility decision, not an automatic part of every door-sensor installation.
| Situation | Safe action | Unsafe assumption |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor 3 appears in Xiaomi Home without a hub prompt | Follow the app’s model-matched setup and test the device tile. | Assuming the sensor will support every remote or automation feature without a gateway. |
| Sensor 3 is listed but the app requests a gateway | Check Xiaomi’s model and regional documentation for the exact compatible gateway before buying one. | Using a ZigBee hub because an older Mi sensor required one. |
| Sensor 3 is not in the catalog | Verify model number, region, app version, and official availability for your market. | Selecting Sensor or Sensor 2 as a substitute. |
What to do when a previously added sensor will not connect
Xiaomi has a support article titled “Mi Door and Window Sensor can’t connect to Home Hub”. Its troubleshooting steps concern the earlier Mi Door and Window Sensor. They are useful as a diagnostic pattern, but Xiaomi does not verify that Sensor 3 uses the same reset operation or hub behavior.
Test communication near the hub
If your confirmed model and its documentation require a hub, move the sensor close to that hub and test again. This separates a possible placement or communication problem from an account or pairing problem. Do not infer from this test that Sensor 3 requires the same hub as the earlier model.

Trigger the contact event
For the earlier sensor, Xiaomi advises moving the sensor body and magnet apart to generate an open/close event, then checking whether the device log updates. You may use the same observation only if the Sensor 3 app screen already shows the device as added and provides an event log. Xiaomi’s source does not confirm a Sensor 3 reset or pairing gesture, so do not hold buttons, remove parts, or repeat a magnet sequence as a supposed factory reset without model-specific instructions.
Refresh the device log
Open the sensor’s event or activity log in Xiaomi Home and refresh it after triggering a normal open/close event. A new event indicates that the app is receiving data, even if a notification or automation still needs separate configuration.
Delete and add the device again
If the earlier-model troubleshooting sequence does not restore communication, Xiaomi advises deleting and adding the device again. Use this only after recording the device name, room, automation rules, and any gateway association. Deleting a device can remove its existing configuration. Re-add it through the standard Xiaomi Home flow and choose the exact Sensor 3 entry when one is available.

- The device tile shows the exact Sensor 3 model or model number you intended to add.
- The tile is assigned to the correct home and room.
- The status is online or otherwise available, rather than offline.
- A normal open/close action changes the status or creates an event in the log, if the app provides that view.
- Any notification or automation you create is supported by the device and, where required, by a compatible gateway.
If the tile appears but never records an event, check the model match, permission state, and gateway requirement before attempting an undocumented reset.
A practical decision path
- Exact model appears and pairs: finish the app wizard, test an open/close event, and then configure optional notifications or automations.
- Exact model appears but pairing fails: keep Bluetooth on, grant requested permissions, move the phone and sensor together, restart Xiaomi Home, and retry.
- Only an older generation appears: stop. Verify the printed model and region instead of selecting the older entry.
- No matching model appears: check the Xiaomi Home region, app version, account, and official regional catalog. Seek model-specific Xiaomi support rather than guessing the protocol or reset method.
- A hub is requested: confirm the exact Sensor 3 gateway requirement from Xiaomi documentation for your region before purchasing or pairing a hub.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning Bluetooth off after the first discovery screen. Xiaomi says it must remain on during the whole general add-device process.
- Assuming every Xiaomi door sensor uses ZigBee. Xiaomi’s own earlier-generation pages show different connectivity arrangements.
- Using a Sensor 2 or original Mi sensor tutorial as proof of Sensor 3 behavior.
- Ignoring the app’s region setting when the model is missing.
- Repeating an undocumented button press, magnet movement, or battery action as a reset.
- Buying a gateway before confirming the Sensor 3 protocol and regional compatibility.
- Declining nearby-device, Bluetooth, location, or Wi-Fi permissions and then treating the resulting scan failure as a hardware fault.

The reliable first attempt is therefore straightforward: identify the exact Sensor 3 and region, keep it beside a phone with Bluetooth enabled, add it through Xiaomi Home’s nearby or manual search, and follow only the instructions shown for the matching model. Where the app or documentation asks for a gateway or a generation-specific reset, verify that requirement with Xiaomi rather than borrowing instructions from an earlier sensor.
