The practical way to connect WordPress to Amazon S3 is to use an offload plugin rather than a core WordPress setting. AWS’s documented workflow uses WP Offload Media Lite: create narrowly scoped AWS credentials, add them to WordPress when necessary, select an S3 bucket and region, configure URL delivery, and verify a new upload before changing retention settings. S3 stores the media objects; WordPress continues to manage the Media Library, attachment records, thumbnails, and references.
What connecting WordPress to S3 actually changes
WordPress does not provide a built-in switch that turns the Media Library into an Amazon S3-backed store. The integration layer is normally a plugin. WP Offload Media Lite automatically copies media uploaded through WordPress to S3 and can rewrite the URLs used by pages and posts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That creates two separate decisions:
- Storage: whether uploaded objects are copied to an S3 bucket.
- Delivery: whether visitors receive those objects from direct S3 URLs or through an optional CloudFront distribution.
Moving delivery to S3 or CloudFront does not automatically migrate every file already in your Media Library. The free workflow handles new uploads; existing files require a separate migration process.
What remains in WordPress after offloading
Offloading changes where the binary files live, not the role of WordPress as the content-management system. Attachment records, captions, alt text, parent posts, generated image-size references, and links stored in post content remain in the WordPress database. Themes and plugins still request those attachment URLs through WordPress, while the offload plugin maps the requests to the S3 or CloudFront location.

This distinction matters during troubleshooting. An object can exist in S3 while an attachment record still points to an old local path. Conversely, a rewritten URL can be correct while the object is missing or inaccessible in the bucket. Check both the database-side attachment reference and the object-side key when diagnosing a broken file.
Requirements and decisions before installation
Access you need
- A running WordPress site and administrator access to install and configure plugins.
- Permission to edit
wp-config.phpif you will use access keys. - An AWS account with authority to create or use an S3 bucket and to create restricted IAM credentials, unless your host supplies an IAM role or equivalent short-lived credentials.
- A recent backup of the database and the local
wp-content/uploadsdirectory before changing storage or deletion settings. - A decision about the AWS region. AWS’s Lightsail procedure recommends using the same region as the WordPress instance; other hosting environments may have different guidance.
Choose the credential path first
| Credential method | Security profile | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|
| IAM role or equivalent short-lived credentials | Preferred when the host supports it because credentials can be issued and rotated without placing long-lived secrets in a file. | Availability and setup depend on the hosting environment. The plugin’s credential selector will expose only methods supported by that environment. |
| IAM user access keys | Long-term programmatic credentials. AWS warns that this path presents a security risk. | Use only when a role or other short-lived method is unavailable. Restrict the policy to the target bucket, protect the keys, rotate them, and remove the user when it is no longer needed. |
Create a least-privilege IAM policy
When access keys are required, create a policy that covers only the S3 bucket used by this WordPress site and the objects inside it. AWS’s example separates bucket-level and object-level resources and grants the S3 operations needed to create, inspect, and manage media. Start with that structure, replace the example resource identifiers with your bucket, and avoid attaching broad account-wide permissions.
Policy safeguards
- Use a dedicated IAM user or role for this site rather than reusing an administrator credential.
- Limit resources to one bucket and its object path where possible.
- Do not place an access key in theme files, a public repository, a browser script, or an image URL.
- Record which site uses each credential so it can be revoked without guessing.
- Rotate access keys on a schedule appropriate to your organization and immediately after suspected exposure.
- Delete the IAM user or detach its permissions when the site no longer needs it.
The plugin needs access to your AWS account to create a bucket when you choose that option and to upload website images and attachments. Treat that access as production infrastructure, not as a disposable plugin setting.
Connect WordPress to S3 step by step
- Confirm the site and backup. Check that WordPress is operating normally, administrators can edit settings, and a restorable backup exists. If you plan to edit
wp-config.php, verify that your host provides a safe file-editing method and that you can undo the change. - Install the integration. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New, search for WP Offload Media Lite, install it, and activate it.
- Open its settings. Go to Settings > Offload Media and choose Amazon S3 as the storage provider.
- Select credentials. Choose the IAM role or other short-lived method offered by your host when available. If the environment does not provide one, choose the access-key method and prepare the restricted IAM user created earlier.
- Add access keys only when needed. Place the key values in
wp-config.phpabove WordPress’s stop-editing comment, using the credential names and format required by the plugin version. Keep the file outside public downloads, restrict filesystem permissions, and restart services if your host requires a restart before PHP workers see the change. - Create or select the bucket. Return to the plugin, choose to create a new bucket or browse existing buckets, and select the intended AWS region. For a WordPress site hosted on Lightsail, AWS recommends the same region as the instance; confirm the appropriate choice for other hosts.
- Configure URL delivery. Decide whether generated media URLs should point directly to S3 or to a configured CloudFront distribution. Save the settings only after confirming the bucket and credential details.
- Upload a controlled test. Add a new image, a document, and, if your site uses them, a video through the normal WordPress Media uploader. Confirm that each object appears in the selected bucket and that its rendered URL loads over HTTPS before changing deletion or caching options.
The last validation step is operational discipline rather than a universal benchmark. File types, themes, web servers, cache plugins, and security rules vary, so a successful connection should be demonstrated on your own site.
Direct S3 delivery or CloudFront?
S3 is the object store. CloudFront is an optional content-delivery and caching layer in front of that store. You can begin with direct S3 URLs and add CloudFront when global caching, a custom delivery domain, or more control over edge behavior justifies another AWS component.
| Delivery choice | How it works | When it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct S3 URL | WordPress rewrites media links to the S3 object endpoint. | A straightforward first deployment, regional audiences, or a site that does not need an edge cache. | Fewer moving parts, but no CloudFront edge caching or distribution features. |
| CloudFront URL | WordPress uses the CloudFront distribution configured for the S3 origin. | Sites serving visitors across regions, sites needing edge caching, or installations using a custom media domain. | Requires distribution configuration, cache behavior decisions, HTTPS and DNS setup, and another layer to troubleshoot. |
CloudFront checks
- Use the exact distribution hostname or custom domain configured in the plugin.
- Confirm the distribution can read the S3 origin and that the object path generated by WordPress matches the origin path.
- Check HTTPS certificates and DNS before switching all media URLs.
- Plan cache invalidation or versioning when replacing files at the same object path.
A CDN can improve cache reach and delivery consistency, but the available documentation does not provide one speed figure that applies to every WordPress host, region, file mix, or audience.

How to migrate an existing Media Library
Offloading new uploads and migrating old uploads are different operations. The WordPress.org listing describes the free plugin as handling newly uploaded media. Its Pro upgrade adds an upload tool for existing Media Library files.
Plan the migration
- Inventory the local uploads directory and the Media Library so you know which years, file types, and generated sizes must move.
- Take a database and filesystem backup and verify that both can be restored.
- Configure the bucket and delivery URL, but keep local files until a representative migration has been checked.
- Use the existing-media upload tool if your chosen plugin edition provides it. Move in manageable batches rather than starting with the entire library during peak traffic.
- Open representative posts, galleries, image variants, downloadable documents, and responsive sizes. Confirm that every referenced URL resolves over HTTPS.
- Review logs, failed objects, and permissions before proceeding to local-file removal.
Do not assume that a new upload test proves that historical attachments are present in S3. Existing files may have different paths, missing thumbnails, unusual characters, or references stored by another plugin.
Should you remove local uploads?
The plugin exposes a Remove Files From Server setting. Enabling it can reduce local disk usage after successful offload, but it changes your recovery path: the web server no longer has an immediate local copy of each attachment.
Safe order of operations
- Keep the original local files while testing uploads, URL rewriting, backups, and restores.
- Verify that the S3 bucket contains originals and required generated sizes, not merely a few recent files.
- Perform a restore into a staging site or other isolated environment and confirm that pages, thumbnails, downloads, and media previews work.
- Confirm that your backup system includes S3 objects or that the bucket has its own retention and recovery plan.
- Only then enable Remove Files From Server, and monitor disk usage, error logs, and newly uploaded attachments afterward.
AWS documents the setting in its bucket-and-distribution walkthrough but does not promise that deletion is safe for every hosting, backup, or restore arrangement. If you cannot demonstrate a restore, keep local copies.
Rollback and change control
Plan a reversible rollout before changing every media URL. First, record the current plugin settings, bucket name, region, distribution hostname, and credential owner. Keep a copy of the database and uploads directory made immediately before the change. A staging copy lets you test URL rewriting and migration without affecting visitors.
- Enable offloading for new uploads while retaining local files.
- Test representative content from older posts, galleries, downloads, and responsive image sizes.
- Monitor failed uploads and web-server errors for a normal traffic period.
- If a problem appears, switch delivery back to the previous URL mode while local files remain available.
- Correct the bucket policy, object path, DNS, or distribution settings, then repeat the tests.
Do not combine a credential change, a full historical migration, CloudFront activation, and local deletion in one untracked deployment. Separating those changes makes it possible to identify the failed layer and restore service without guessing.

Host-specific considerations
AWS’s walkthrough is written for WordPress running on Lightsail, where the recommended bucket region matches the instance region. A managed WordPress host, container platform, or another AWS service may expose a different way to obtain an IAM role, edit configuration files, or restart PHP workers. Confirm how your host handles roles, environment variables, filesystem permissions, and deployments before copying the Lightsail procedure exactly.
Some hosts do not allow direct editing of wp-config.php, while others replace that file during deployments. In those environments, use the host’s supported secret-management or configuration mechanism and document it for the next administrator. The plugin’s available credential choices can also vary by runtime, so an option shown in one hosting environment may not appear in another.

Access denied while creating or uploading
Check that the active role or IAM user is the one you intended, that its policy names the correct bucket and object resources, and that the bucket region matches the plugin selection. A policy that permits a bucket but not its objects, or the reverse, can fail during different stages of the same upload.
The bucket does not appear
Recheck credentials, account selection, region, and the policy’s ability to list or inspect the relevant bucket. If your host supplies a role, confirm that the role is attached to the correct instance or runtime rather than to another server.
The object exists but the page shows a broken image
Copy the generated media URL into a browser and inspect the response. Confirm the URL uses the intended S3 or CloudFront hostname, the object key matches the bucket path, and HTTPS is configured. A successful upload does not prove that the public delivery path, origin permissions, or distribution cache is correct.
New media works but old media remains local
That behavior is expected when only the free new-upload workflow is configured. Use the existing-media upload tool supplied by the plugin edition you selected, then validate historical posts before considering local deletion.

Some formats fail while images work
Test a document and video separately, inspect the failed object’s key and permissions, and check whether a security or caching layer blocks that MIME type. The plugin is intended to copy images, videos, documents, and other media added through WordPress’s uploader, but host and policy rules can still affect individual requests.
Visitors see stale files after replacement
Direct S3 responses and CloudFront responses can be cached. Check the object path and cache behavior, then use the cache invalidation or file-versioning method appropriate to your distribution instead of repeatedly deleting and re-uploading objects blindly.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Prefer a host-supported IAM role or short-lived credentials.
- If access keys are unavoidable, keep them in protected configuration rather than source code or the database.
- Scope permissions to the site’s bucket and required object operations.
- Review IAM users, roles, and access keys periodically.
- Monitor failed uploads and unexpected bucket activity.
- Keep WordPress, the offload plugin, and the hosting runtime updated through a tested change process.
- Document the bucket name, region, distribution, DNS name, credential owner, and restore procedure.
- Test restoration before enabling any setting that removes local files.
Costs, performance, and architecture expectations
The architecture can shift media storage and delivery away from the WordPress server, but the actual bill depends on S3 storage, requests, data transfer, and—when used—CloudFront distribution and transfer charges. The available AWS and plugin material does not establish a universal storage price, speed increase, or bandwidth saving, so calculate those values from your region, file volume, traffic, and retention policy.
For a small site, direct S3 delivery may be the simpler operating choice. For a globally distributed site with repeat traffic, CloudFront may justify its configuration overhead. Neither choice removes the need for backups, IAM hygiene, URL testing, or a restore plan.
Include operational work in the comparison, not just the service line items. CloudFront adds distribution, certificate, DNS, cache, and invalidation settings. A direct S3 arrangement has fewer components but still requires bucket permissions, HTTPS URL checks, and a documented recovery process. Revisit the choice when traffic patterns, audience location, or media volume changes.
A practical rollout sequence
- Back up the database and uploads directory.
- Choose role-based credentials when the host supports them.
- Create a bucket-scoped policy and credential.
- Install and activate WP Offload Media Lite.
- Configure Amazon S3, bucket, region, and credential method.
- Test new image, document, and video uploads over HTTPS.
- Choose direct S3 or CloudFront URL delivery.
- Migrate existing media separately if required.
- Verify a real restore.
- Only after verification, decide whether to retain or remove local files.
This sequence keeps the reversible choices—credentials, URL delivery, and migration batches—separate from the destructive choice to delete local uploads.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect WordPress to Amazon S3?
Install and activate WP Offload Media Lite, open Settings > Offload Media, select Amazon S3, choose a supported IAM role or restricted access-key method, select or create a bucket and region, configure S3 or CloudFront URL delivery, and test a new upload over HTTPS.
Does WordPress automatically move my existing Media Library to S3?
No. The free workflow handles newly uploaded files. Existing attachments require a separate migration tool, available in the plugin’s Pro upgrade, followed by checks of posts, galleries, thumbnails, and downloads.
Recommended Free Tools
Can WordPress serve images through CloudFront?
Yes. Configure CloudFront with the S3 bucket as its origin, then select the distribution hostname or custom media domain in the offload plugin. Verify origin access, DNS, certificates, object paths, and cache behavior before switching all URLs.
Is it safe to delete local uploads after S3 offload?
Only after a complete backup, representative URL testing, confirmation that originals and generated sizes exist in S3, and a successful restore into staging. If you cannot restore the site and its media, leave local files in place.
Should I use an IAM role or access keys in wp-config.php?
Use a host-supported IAM role or equivalent short-lived credentials when available. Access keys are long-lived programmatic credentials; use them only when necessary, restrict them to the site’s bucket, protect the configuration file, rotate them, and revoke them when no longer needed.
Which AWS region should I choose for the bucket?
AWS recommends the same region as the WordPress instance in its Lightsail procedure. Other hosts may have different placement or role guidance, so confirm the appropriate region for your hosting environment and keep the plugin and bucket settings consistent.
What media types can the plugin offload?
The WordPress.org listing says the plugin copies images, videos, documents, and other media added through WordPress’s media uploader. Test the formats your site actually uses because policies, MIME handling, and security layers can affect individual files.
Will S3 or CloudFront always make WordPress faster or cheaper?
There is no universal result. Costs depend on storage, requests, transfer, region, traffic, and CloudFront usage; performance depends on audience, caching, files, and hosting. Compare those variables for your site instead of relying on a fixed savings or speed claim.
The Bottom Line
Use WP Offload Media Lite as the WordPress-to-S3 integration layer, prefer short-lived IAM access, and scope any fallback access keys to one bucket. Test new uploads, migrate existing media separately, and introduce CloudFront only when its caching and delivery benefits justify the added configuration. Keep local files until backups and a real restore prove that removing them is safe.
