To use Microsoft iSCSI Initiator in Windows 11, open the built-in app, add the target portal supplied by your storage administrator, discover the target, and connect to it. The initiator is the Windows client; enabling it does not create or provision an iSCSI target.
What you need before connecting
Ask the storage administrator or provider for the target portal address, target name or IQN, and any authentication details. The portal can be a DNS name or IP address. Confirm which network adapter or route to use, whether CHAP authentication is required, and whether the connection should persist after a restart. Microsoft describes portal addresses as the endpoints used for discovery and connection in its New-IscsiTargetPortal reference.
If you do not already have an iSCSI target, the Windows initiator alone is not enough: a storage service or system must provide one.
How to enable and connect with the Windows 11 app
-
Open Start, search for iSCSI Initiator, and open the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator desktop app. If Windows prompts you to start the Microsoft iSCSI service, approve the prompt if you intend to connect to iSCSI storage. Microsoft documents this first-use prompt in its Windows Server setup guidance; the exact prompt and labels may vary by Windows 11 build.

-
Open the Discovery tab and add the target portal address. Enter the port supplied by the storage provider if it differs from the documented default, TCP 3260. Confirm the port rather than assuming every deployment uses the default; see Microsoft’s portal cmdlet reference.
-
After discovery, open Targets, select the intended target, and choose Connect. Enter authentication or advanced initiator and portal settings only when the administrator requires them. Microsoft’s LoginIScsiTarget API reference documents connection parameters such as target name, portal, authentication, initiator address, persistence, and multipath settings.
-
If Windows should reconnect after reboot, select the persistent or favorite-target option in the connection dialog. The initiator service can automatically reconnect persistent sessions after restart; see Microsoft’s Connect-IscsiTarget reference.

Verify that the target reports as connected. Then check Disk Management for the expected disk. Do not initialize, format, or bring a shared disk online unless the storage design and administrator explicitly call for that action.
Connect and verify with PowerShell
Use an elevated PowerShell session if your organization requires administrative permissions. Replace the illustrative values with the portal address and target IQN supplied by the administrator; do not put real secrets in scripts or examples.
# Add a target portal for discovery
New-IscsiTargetPortal -TargetPortalAddress "<portal-address>"
# List discovered targets
Get-IscsiTarget
# Connect and make the session persistent across restarts
Connect-IscsiTarget -NodeAddress "<target-IQN>" -IsPersistent $true
# Check active sessions and connections
Get-IscsiSession
Get-IscsiConnection
Microsoft describes the cmdlet’s purpose as: “The Connect-IscsiTarget cmdlet initiates a connection to the specified iSCSI target device.” See the iSCSI PowerShell module reference. For a particular portal, port, initiator address, CHAP setting, or multipath configuration, use the corresponding parameters and values from the administrator; the cmdlet reference lists available options.

Choose connection settings deliberately
| Choice | Use it when | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| GUI or PowerShell | Use the app for a one-off interactive connection; use PowerShell for repeatable setup or automation. | Both methods need the same target and authorization details. Microsoft’s iSCSI cmdlets are documented in the iSCSI module reference. |
| Manual or persistent login | Choose persistence only when the target should be available automatically after restart. | A persistent session can restore access after reboot. Microsoft documents the -IsPersistent option in the connection cmdlet reference. |
| Default route or selected initiator address | Use a specific initiator address or adapter when the storage design requires a dedicated path. | Confirm the intended route with the administrator. Microsoft recommends dedicated iSCSI adapters for clustered systems in its iSCSI troubleshooting guidance. |
| Single path or multipath | Use multipath only when the storage array and network paths are configured to support it. | Do not enable multiple sessions or MPIO by default. Microsoft’s login API reference describes multipath-related options. |
| Authentication and access control | Supply CHAP or reverse CHAP details only if configured for the target. | The target may also authorize access by initiator IQN or source address. Confirm the settings with the administrator; see Microsoft’s connection cmdlet reference and troubleshooting guidance. |
Troubleshoot a target that will not connect
-
Discovery finds nothing: Recheck the portal name or IP address and port with the administrator. Microsoft documents TCP 3260 as the default portal port, but the configured target may use a different port. Inspect configured portals with
Get-IscsiTargetPortal; see the Get-IscsiTargetPortal reference.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
The target appears but login fails: Confirm the target IQN, any required CHAP credentials, and that the target authorizes this initiator’s IQN or source address. If the initiator name changed, old Favorite Target entries may still use the previous identity; Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends removing and recreating those entries to match the current initiator name.
-
The connection uses the wrong network path or times out: Check network reachability, routing, and the selected initiator adapter or address with the storage administrator. Do not assume that changing firewall settings is the fix.

The app says connected but storage is unavailable: Inspect active sessions and connections with
Get-IscsiSessionandGet-IscsiConnection. Check Windows and target event logs for storage connectivity errors; Microsoft identifies session, connection, and iSCSI event checks in its iSCSI troubleshooting guidance. -
A session does not return after reboot: Verify that the connection was saved as persistent or as a favorite target and inspect its status with
Get-IscsiSession. Microsoft’s Connect-IscsiTarget documentation explains persistent connections.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Keep the storage connection secure
-
Leave Windows Firewall enabled. Microsoft advises against disabling it; scope network access to the required hosts and services according to the storage design. See the Windows Firewall overview.
-
Use CHAP or reverse CHAP only when required by the target configuration, and obtain credentials through an approved channel.
-
Make the session persistent only if automatic reconnection is intended. A persistent login can restore access to the target after a reboot.
