To use two external monitors with an HP EliteBook, connect each screen to a video output on a compatible dock, connect the dock to the EliteBook’s supported USB-C or Thunderbolt port, then press Windows+P and choose Extend. Whether both screens work—and at what resolution and refresh rate—depends on the exact EliteBook, dock, port arrangement and monitors, not just the number of connectors on the dock.
Before connecting anything, check the EliteBook and dock

- How many external displays the combination supports.
- Supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations when two displays are attached simultaneously.
- Whether the EliteBook’s USB-C port supports the required display connection, or whether the dock needs a Thunderbolt or USB4 host port for full display capability.
- Which dock outputs can be used at the same time; some port combinations are mutually exclusive.
- Whether a USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter or a specific DisplayPort mode is needed.
HP advises checking the dock’s Quick Setup Poster or User Guide for its monitor limit. The dock’s published maximum is not automatically the maximum for every connected EliteBook: the notebook’s graphics hardware and host-port capabilities also affect the result.

Connect the monitors and dock
- Match each monitor to a dock output. Use a cable that fits both the monitor input and an available dock output, or a compatible adapter. For example, HP’s Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 documentation lists HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter connections; it also describes daisy-chaining compatible monitors over Thunderbolt. Other docks have different ports and limits. See HP’s Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock overview.
- Connect the dock to the EliteBook. Use the host cable and compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt port specified by the dock and notebook documentation. Power the dock as its guide directs. HP’s general setup sequence is to connect peripherals to the dock, then connect the dock to the computer. See HP’s docking-station setup and troubleshooting tips.
- Set the displays to extend. In Windows, press Windows+P and choose Extend to make the monitors separate work areas. Duplicate mirrors the image, while Second screen only turns off the notebook display.
- Arrange and configure the screens. Open Windows display settings to arrange the display positions to match your desk and select from the resolution and refresh rates available for the connected setup.
What resolution and refresh rate can two monitors use?
There is no single maximum for every HP EliteBook-and-dock combination. Check the specifications for both devices and the supported modes for two screens operating at once. A dock may support more displays or higher resolutions with a newer host than an older EliteBook can provide.

Examples from HP documentation
| Dock or configuration | Published display capability | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| HP Elite USB-C Dock G3 | One display up to 4K (4096 × 2160) at 60 Hz; two displays up to 2K (2560 × 1600) at 60 Hz; or three displays up to FHD (1920 × 1200) at 60 Hz. | These are specifications for this dock and listed compatible systems. HP says the actual display configuration depends on the platform’s video-out capability. See HP Elite USB-C Dock G3 specifications. |
| HP Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock | HP describes support for up to four external displays. | The host and display mode must support the intended setup; high-resolution mode requires host support for DisplayPort 1.4 DSC. This dock specification does not establish that an older EliteBook can drive four displays or the same resolution. See HP’s Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock overview. |
| Specific EliteBook and workstation configurations in HP’s dual-4K notice | HP says the Thunderbolt USB-C port cannot support two 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) DisplayPort 1.4 monitors at 60 Hz in the configurations covered. | HP attributes this limitation to graphics bandwidth, not a dock fault. The notice covers specific EliteBook generations and ZBook Firefly systems, not all EliteBooks. See HP’s dual-4K display support notice. |
For the configurations in that dual-4K notice, HP’s suggested workaround is to change the monitor’s DisplayPort mode from DP1.4 to DP1.2, following the monitor manual. This is a model-specific workaround, not a universal way to enable dual 4K at 60 Hz.
Why might the second monitor be blank?
Check the simple connection issues first
- Confirm each monitor is powered on and set to the input used by its cable.
- Reseat both ends of each video cable and the dock’s connection to the EliteBook.
- Try another supported dock output, if available, and check the dock’s port map for combinations that cannot be used together.
- Confirm Windows is set to Extend rather than a mode that mirrors the display or uses only one screen.
- Check the dock and EliteBook documentation for the required cable, adapter, host port and supported display mode.
Verify the host port for Thunderbolt docks
For the specific issue addressed in HP’s Thunderbolt G4/G6 guidance, a USB-C monitor may fail to display when the dock is connected to a non-Thunderbolt port while multiple displays are attached. HP advises using the computer’s Thunderbolt or USB4 port for full display capability. If the computer lacks Thunderbolt or USB4, HP’s guidance for that issue is to move the monitor from the dock’s Thunderbolt downstream port to another available USB-C port. Check whether this guidance applies to your exact dock and EliteBook. See HP’s Thunderbolt dock guidance for systems without Thunderbolt.

- SMALL FOOTPRINT – Reclaim your desk with a compact dock that takes up only 5 x 5 inches of space.
- EASILY MANAGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT – Help secure and remotely manage your laptop as this dock gives you more access and visibility with advanced network manageability features (1).
Check software and model-specific troubleshooting
Use HP’s instructions for your exact hardware to check for software, driver, dock firmware or BIOS updates. HP notes that some Thunderbolt docks may require a BIOS update. Its G6 troubleshooting page also describes bandwidth limits and mutually exclusive ports for certain high-resolution combinations, so follow the port arrangement for the specific dock and display mode rather than assuming every connector can be used at once. See HP’s Thunderbolt dock guidance and HP G6 dock troubleshooting information.
