Connect one monitor to the ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2’s native HDMI port and the other to its native DisplayPort 1.4 port. Turn on both screens, select the correct inputs, then use your operating system’s display settings to extend and arrange the desktop. Lenovo documents support for up to three independent displays, but optional rear ports vary by configuration, so inspect your specific computer before buying cables, adapters, or a dock.

Check the rear panel before connecting anything

The standard two-monitor connection uses the two ports Lenovo lists on the M75q Gen 2: one HDMI 1.4b output and one DisplayPort 1.4 output. Lenovo’s current ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 specifications describe support for “up to 3 independent displays via onboard ports (DisplayPort™ + HDMI®) and optional ports (VGA / 2nd DP / 2nd HDMI® / USB-C® / 2x DP).”

That wording does not mean every M75q Gen 2 has all of those connectors. VGA, a second DisplayPort, a second HDMI port, USB-C with DisplayPort function, and other rear-port combinations are configuration choices. Compare the actual chassis with the port layout in the Lenovo PSREF PDF for the exact machine before purchasing an adapter.

Identify the two native video outputs

  • HDMI: the standard HDMI-shaped connector labeled HDMI. Lenovo specifies HDMI 1.4b on this model.
  • DisplayPort: the rectangular connector with one beveled corner, labeled DisplayPort or DP. Lenovo specifies DisplayPort 1.4.

Do not assume a USB-C socket can drive a monitor. It must be the optional USB-C configuration that includes DisplayPort function. A USB-C port without video capability will not produce a display signal merely because the plug fits.

What you need for a two-monitor setup

  • Two monitors with working power supplies and available HDMI, DisplayPort, or other compatible video inputs.
  • One cable that connects the computer’s HDMI output to the first monitor’s input.
  • One DisplayPort cable for the computer’s DisplayPort output and the second monitor’s DisplayPort input, or a compatible adapter when that monitor uses another input.
  • Adapters only when the monitor input does not match the computer output. Check the adapter’s supported resolution and refresh rate against the monitor’s target settings.
  • Enough desk space and power outlets for both displays.

For the simplest direct connection, use HDMI for one screen and DisplayPort for the other. This avoids making a dock necessary for two displays when both native outputs are available. A direct HDMI cable and a direct DisplayPort cable are the natural purchases if you do not already have suitable cables; choose their lengths and connector ends to match the equipment on your desk.

Check the monitor inputs before ordering cables

Look at the label beside each monitor socket rather than relying on the monitor model name. A monitor may have several HDMI inputs, a DisplayPort input, or only one of those types. The cable must match the ThinkCentre output at one end and the monitor input at the other. If an adapter is required, verify whether it is intended to convert from DisplayPort to HDMI or from HDMI to DisplayPort; these directions are not automatically interchangeable.

Also check the mode you want to use. A cable or adapter that works for basic 1080p video may not support the 4K resolution or refresh rate you intend. The computer output, adapter, cable, and monitor must all support the selected mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect the two monitors step by step

  1. Turn off or place the computer in a safe idle state. You can connect displays while the system is running, but starting with the monitors and computer idle makes it easier to identify which output is being tested.
  2. Connect the first monitor to HDMI. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the M75q Gen 2’s native HDMI port and the other into the monitor’s HDMI input. If the monitor has several HDMI sockets, note the number printed beside the socket.
  3. Connect the second monitor to DisplayPort. Plug the DisplayPort cable into the computer’s native DP output and the monitor’s DisplayPort input. Push the connectors fully home; a partially seated DisplayPort plug can leave the screen showing “No signal.”
  4. Connect power and switch on both monitors. Use each monitor’s on-screen controls to choose the input used by its cable. A monitor left on HDMI while its cable is connected to DisplayPort will not automatically show the computer’s picture.
  5. Start the ThinkCentre. The computer should detect both displays during startup or shortly after the operating system loads. If only one appears, use the troubleshooting section below before changing the cabling.
  6. Open display settings. In current Windows versions, open Settings > System > Display. The two screens appear as numbered rectangles when detected. Select Identify if you need to match each number to the physical monitor.
  7. Choose the desktop mode. Select Extend these displays for a separate desktop on each monitor. Choose Duplicate these displays only when both screens should show the same image, such as for a presentation.
  8. Arrange the screens. Drag the numbered rectangles so their left-to-right and vertical positions match the physical layout on your desk, then select Apply. This determines where the pointer crosses from one screen to the other.
  9. Set the main display if needed. Select the monitor you use most, open its display options, and enable the setting that makes it the main display. This is where the taskbar and newly opened windows normally appear.
  10. Test both screens. Move a window across the boundary, play a video on each monitor, and confirm that each screen remains at its intended resolution and refresh rate.

Windows menu names can change slightly between releases. The important controls are display detection, extend or duplicate mode, screen arrangement, resolution, refresh rate, and the main-display selection.

Make the physical arrangement match Windows

Place the monitors where you actually intend to use them before arranging the numbered rectangles. If one panel is higher, lower, or on the opposite side of the other, reproduce that position in Windows. Otherwise the pointer may appear to stop at an unexpected edge or move to the wrong screen. Use Identify while standing in front of the monitors so you can label the physical panels correctly.

Resolution and refresh-rate limits

Lenovo’s PSREF lists these maximum capabilities for the graphics outputs. They are per-output specifications, not a promise that every combination of two monitors will run simultaneously at every listed maximum.

Output Lenovo-listed capability What it means when choosing a monitor
HDMI 1.4b Up to 3840×2160 at 30 Hz, or 2560×1440 at 60 Hz 4K is limited to 30 Hz through this output; 1440p at 60 Hz is the higher-refresh option listed for HDMI.
DisplayPort 1.4 Up to 3840×2160 at 60 Hz DisplayPort is the better native output for a 4K monitor intended to run at 60 Hz.
VGA, when installed as an optional port Up to 1920×1200 at 60 Hz Suitable for a compatible older monitor, but not for a 4K display.

These figures come from Lenovo’s current product specification page and its reference PDF. Lenovo also notes that the integrated-graphics information does not apply to processor configurations without integrated graphics.

Practical monitor combinations

  • Two 1080p monitors: HDMI plus DisplayPort is comfortably within the listed output capabilities.
  • Two 1440p monitors: The HDMI specification lists 1440p at 60 Hz, and DisplayPort supports higher resolutions; verify the monitor’s selected mode in Windows after connecting.
  • One 4K monitor and one lower-resolution monitor: Put the 4K display on DisplayPort when 4K at 60 Hz is important. HDMI’s listed 4K mode is 30 Hz.
  • Two 4K monitors: The per-port figures show DisplayPort at 4K/60 and HDMI at 4K/30, but Lenovo does not guarantee every two-display combination at both maximums. Treat the quoted figures as output limits and confirm the actual mode reported by Windows and each monitor.

To check what is actually active, select each screen separately in Windows display settings and inspect its resolution and refresh-rate fields. Do not assume that connecting a 4K panel means it is running at 4K, or that a monitor advertised at 60 Hz will receive 60 Hz through every input.

Using an optional third display

The M75q Gen 2 is documented for up to three independent displays across its onboard and optional outputs. A third monitor therefore depends on which optional port was installed in your particular unit.

Optional DisplayPort or HDMI

If the rear panel has a second DP or second HDMI connector, connect the third screen directly with the matching cable. If both monitors use the same connector type, the optional second connector may let you avoid an adapter, but verify that the port is actually present before buying cables.

Optional USB-C with DisplayPort function

A configured USB-C video output can feed a compatible monitor or adapter. The USB-C socket must explicitly provide DisplayPort function; ordinary USB-C data connectivity is not enough. Check the exact configuration and the adapter’s supported mode before relying on this route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional VGA

VGA can serve an older third monitor at up to 1920×1200 at 60 Hz according to Lenovo’s specification. It is an analog connection and is not the right choice for a 4K screen.

Choosing a connection when the monitor inputs do not match

Monitor situation Preferred approach
One monitor has HDMI and the other has DisplayPort Connect HDMI to HDMI and DisplayPort to DisplayPort. This is the direct two-port setup.
Both monitors have HDMI Use the native HDMI output for one. For the second, check whether the computer has an optional second HDMI port, or use a compatible DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter from the native DP output.
Both monitors have DisplayPort Use the native DisplayPort output for one. For the second, check for an optional second DP output, or use a compatible HDMI-to-DisplayPort solution whose direction and supported mode match the equipment.
One monitor has only VGA Use the optional VGA port if your chassis has one, or select an adapter designed for the required direction and resolution. Lenovo’s VGA specification tops out at 1920×1200 at 60 Hz.

Adapters are not interchangeable simply because their plugs fit. Before purchasing, confirm the computer-side connector, monitor-side connector, signal direction, and desired resolution and refresh rate. If the monitor accepts one of the computer’s native outputs, a direct cable is usually the least complicated option.

When a dock is unnecessary

A dock is not required merely because you want two displays. If your M75q Gen 2 has its standard HDMI and DisplayPort outputs and the monitors accept those signals, two direct cables provide the straightforward connection. Consider another device only when the monitor inputs require conversion or when your particular configuration lacks the output you need. Verify the exact ports first rather than buying a dock based only on the M75q Gen 2 model name.

Troubleshooting a missing or unstable display

The monitor says “No signal”

  1. Use the monitor’s input button to select the exact socket carrying the cable.
  2. Unplug and firmly reseat both ends of the cable.
  3. Confirm that the cable is connected to the ThinkCentre’s video output, not a nearby USB or network connector.
  4. Test the monitor and cable individually with the HDMI output, then individually with DisplayPort. This isolates a monitor, cable, or computer-port problem.
  5. Restart the computer and open display settings to run Detect.

Only one monitor appears in Windows

Start by checking the physical port configuration. The optional second DP, second HDMI, VGA, and USB-C video arrangements are not installed on every M75q Gen 2. If you are using USB-C, verify that the socket has DisplayPort function rather than assuming all USB-C ports carry video. Then select Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect and reconnect the missing screen.

The picture works but the refresh rate is wrong

Select the affected display in Windows, open Advanced display, and choose a refresh rate supported by both the output and the monitor. Remember Lenovo’s listed HDMI ceiling of 3840×2160 at 30 Hz; a 4K monitor connected through HDMI may therefore show 30 Hz rather than 60 Hz. For 4K at 60 Hz, use the native DisplayPort output when the monitor supports it.

The image flickers or cuts out

  • Reseat the cable at both ends and remove unnecessary adapters or extensions.
  • Temporarily select a lower resolution or refresh rate. If the problem stops, the previous mode may exceed the connection or adapter’s capability.
  • Test each monitor alone. A fault that follows one cable or monitor is different from a fault that follows one computer output.
  • Check that the adapter, if used, supports the selected resolution and refresh rate rather than only basic video.

The desktop is duplicated when you wanted two workspaces

Open display settings, select Extend these displays, apply the change, and drag the numbered screens into the correct order. Duplication intentionally sends the same desktop to both monitors; it does not create additional workspace.

  • SUPPORTS: High bandwidth HBR3, 32.4 Gbps bandwidth, DSC 1.2 display stream compression, FEC forward error correction, and 32 audio channels

USB-C produces charging or data but no picture

This usually indicates that the particular USB-C port does not include DisplayPort function, or that the adapter is not compatible with the intended signal. For a two-monitor setup, return to the native HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. For a third screen, verify the machine’s exact optional-port configuration before replacing the adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One display works only when the other is disconnected

Reconnect both using the native HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, then check Windows for both numbered displays. If one remains absent, test each monitor separately on each available output and confirm the selected modes are within Lenovo’s limits. The per-output figures do not guarantee every pair of displays at their maximum settings, so lower one display’s resolution or refresh rate temporarily to isolate a bandwidth or adapter limitation.

  • The other display is connected to the native DisplayPort 1.4 output.
  • Each monitor is set to the input used by its cable.
  • Windows detects both screens under Settings > System > Display.
  • Extend these displays is selected when separate desktops are required.
  • The numbered displays are arranged to match the desk.
  • The chosen resolution and refresh rate fit the HDMI or DisplayPort limits and the monitor’s own specifications.
  • Any optional port or USB-C video path has been confirmed on the actual chassis rather than assumed from the model name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q Gen 2 run two monitors?

Yes. The normal setup is one monitor on the native HDMI output and one on the native DisplayPort 1.4 output. Lenovo documents support for up to three independent displays, although optional ports differ by configuration.

Do both monitors need to use the same cable type?

No. HDMI and DisplayPort can be used at the same time. If both monitors accept only HDMI or only DisplayPort, check for an optional matching port or use a compatible adapter with the correct signal direction and supported mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the M75q Gen 2 run 4K at 60 Hz?

Lenovo lists up to 3840×2160 at 60 Hz on DisplayPort. The HDMI specification lists 3840×2160 at 30 Hz, so use DisplayPort for a 4K monitor when 60 Hz is important.

Why does USB-C charge a device but not show a monitor image?

The specific USB-C port may provide data and power without DisplayPort function. Only the optional USB-C configuration with DisplayPort support can be used for video, and the adapter must support the desired resolution and refresh rate.

Is a docking station required for two monitors?

No. When the standard HDMI and DisplayPort outputs are available and match the monitor inputs, two direct cables are sufficient. A dock or adapter is needed only when the available connectors and monitor inputs do not otherwise match.

How do I make the monitors act as separate workspaces?

Open Settings > System > Display, choose Extend these displays, apply the setting, and drag the numbered displays into their physical left-to-right arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check if one monitor says No signal?

Select the correct input on the monitor, reseat both cable ends, verify that the cable is plugged into a video output, and test each monitor and cable individually. Then run Detect in Windows display settings.

Can an optional VGA port drive a modern 4K monitor?

No. Lenovo lists VGA up to 1920×1200 at 60 Hz. It can serve a compatible older display, but it is not suitable for a 4K screen.

The Bottom Line

For two monitors, connect one directly to HDMI and the other directly to DisplayPort 1.4, select the matching inputs, and choose Extend these displays in Windows. Check the actual rear-panel configuration before using USB-C, a second digital port, VGA, an adapter, or a third monitor.
