You can connect two Bluetooth speakers only when both exact models support the same manufacturer linking feature. Pair your phone or other source with the primary speaker, use the maker’s documented process to add the second speaker, and then select either stereo mode (separate left and right channels) or party/group mode (the same program across speakers). A normal Bluetooth connection, similar product names, or speakers from the same brand does not by itself guarantee that they will work together.
What connecting two speakers can—and cannot—do
“Bluetooth speaker” describes how a speaker receives audio; it does not define a universal multi-speaker standard. Each manufacturer may implement its own linking system, and those systems can be limited to particular models or generations. Before changing settings or buying a second unit, identify the full model name printed on both speakers and check whether they are listed as compatible for the same feature.
Stereo pairing
Stereo pairing divides the two channels of a stereo recording. One speaker handles the left channel and the other handles the right channel. This can create a wider, more directional soundstage, but it works best when the speakers are placed with the correct left/right orientation and are the same model in the system you are using.

Party, group or shared-playback mode
Party or group modes generally send the same playback to multiple linked speakers. This is useful when you want more even coverage in separate parts of a room, across a patio, or between adjoining spaces rather than a precise left/right image. The feature name and maximum group size depend on the manufacturer and compatible product family.
| Goal | Mode to look for | What you hear | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wider music image at one listening position | Stereo Pair, Stereo Mode or an equivalent | Left and right channels are separated between the speakers | Usually requires two speakers of the same model and the same supported feature generation |
| Consistent music throughout a room or several areas | Party Connect, Party Mode, PartyBoost or an equivalent group mode | The same program plays from each linked speaker | Every speaker must appear on the manufacturer’s compatibility list |
Check compatibility before attempting setup
Record the exact model names
Read the model label on each speaker or its original documentation. A family name is not enough: two products that look similar may use different linking systems. Write down the model, regional variant if shown, and any generation or feature label. Use those exact details when searching the manufacturer’s support site or manual.
Find a named linking feature
Look for explicit wording such as “Stereo Pair,” “Party Connect,” “PartyBoost,” “Party Mode,” or “Group.” The documentation should identify which models can participate and whether a particular app, button sequence, or software version is required. If the manual only describes connecting one phone to one speaker, do not assume that a second speaker can be added.

Linking systems that sound similar can still be separate. JBL’s support guidance, for example, says that the cited Connect, Connect+ and PartyBoost families cannot be paired across those systems. A shared logo or brand name therefore does not prove interoperability.

Update software when the maker requires it
Install the latest firmware or app version specified for the speakers before pairing. Sony specifically notes that compatible speakers may fail to connect if they are not updated to the latest firmware. Keep both speakers powered during an update and follow the maker’s instructions; do not interrupt an update by switching the speaker off.
General setup procedure
The labels and controls vary by product, but the sequence below is a safe way to organize the process. Replace the generic steps with the exact instructions in your speakers’ manual.
- Charge and place the speakers nearby. Give both units adequate battery power and put them within the distance recommended in their documentation. Keep them close for initial setup so that you can see indicators and hear confirmation messages.
- Disconnect unwanted Bluetooth sources. Temporarily pause or disconnect other phones, tablets and computers that may automatically reconnect to either speaker. This prevents the wrong source from becoming the primary connection.
- Reset an old speaker link if necessary. If either speaker is still linked to a previous pair or group, use the maker’s documented unpair, reset or leave-group command. Do not guess at a reset combination because button shortcuts differ by model.
- Connect the source to the primary speaker. Pair your phone, tablet, computer or other audio source with one speaker using the normal Bluetooth procedure described in that speaker’s manual. Start playback briefly to confirm that the source is connected to the intended primary unit.
- Activate the linking feature. Press the dedicated stereo, party, group or shortcut control, or use the manufacturer’s app, exactly as documented. Some systems start the link from the primary speaker; others require the second speaker to be placed in a special mode first.
- Add the second speaker. Follow the confirmation prompt, indicator pattern or button instruction for the second unit. Wait for the speakers to announce or display that they are linked before moving them apart.
- Select the playback mode. Choose stereo when you want left/right separation and have a supported matched pair. Choose party or group mode when you want the same music from both speakers or broader coverage.
- Test channels and volume. Play a track with clear left/right content. In stereo mode, verify that the speaker assigned left is physically on your left and the right speaker is on your right. In group mode, check that both speakers remain synchronized at the listening positions you intend to use.
Sony: Stereo Pair and Party Connect
Stereo Pair
Sony’s Stereo Pair function uses two speakers of the same model. After the pair is created, one unit plays the right channel and the other plays the left channel. Use Sony’s current instructions for your exact model to identify the pairing control and the order in which the speakers must be activated; the button names and app flow are not universal across Sony products.
Place the units symmetrically after pairing. If the channels sound reversed, swap the physical positions or use the model’s documented left/right assignment control rather than assuming the Bluetooth connection is defective.

Party Connect
Party Connect is separate from Stereo Pair. Sony publishes a compatibility list for Party Connect and states that it can link up to 100 compatible speakers. That capacity applies only to the named Party Connect feature and supported models; it is not a general limit or capability of Bluetooth speakers. Check the list for every speaker and install the firmware Sony requires before trying to create the group.
Bose: SoundLink linking examples
SoundLink Max shortcut-button flow
Bose’s SoundLink Max instructions provide a product-specific shortcut-button method: start linking with the shortcut button on one speaker, then press the shortcut button on the second. When the link is established, the speakers announce the selected mode. Treat this as an example for the cited SoundLink Max family, not a universal Bose or Bluetooth sequence. Other Bose models can use different controls or compatibility rules.
Stereo and Party modes
Bose documents both Stereo and Party modes. Its Stereo mode requires the same model in the cited guidance. Use Stereo for left/right separation from a matched pair; use Party mode when the objective is shared playback. Confirm that both exact units belong to the product family covered by the instructions before attempting the link.
JBL: PartyBoost and older connection families
PartyBoost Stereo Mode
JBL states that PartyBoost Stereo Mode requires two speakers of the same model. Follow the current JBL support procedure for placing one speaker in the primary role, adding the second and selecting stereo. The exact controls can vary between products, so do not substitute a button sequence from a different JBL series.

Do not mix Connect, Connect+ and PartyBoost systems
JBL’s support information says the cited Connect, Connect+ and PartyBoost families cannot be paired across those systems. If one speaker uses Connect+ and the other uses PartyBoost, a normal Bluetooth pairing may still connect one speaker to a source, but that does not make the two speakers a shared group. Match the feature generation listed for both units.
Choosing the right mode and placement
| Decision | Choose stereo when… | Choose party/group when… |
|---|---|---|
| Listening goal | You sit between the speakers and want a wider left/right image. | People are spread around the room or you want similar sound in multiple areas. |
| Speaker selection | You have two identical, explicitly compatible models. | You have models listed as compatible with the same group feature; a stereo match may not be required unless the maker says it is. |
| Placement | Place the left and right units at similar height and distance from your seat. | Distribute units where coverage is needed, while staying within the maker’s recommended wireless range. |
| Content | Music with meaningful stereo separation benefits most. | Speech, background music and party playlists benefit from consistent playback in several locations. |
Keep both speakers at moderate volume while testing. If one unit is much closer to a wall or corner, its bass and reflections may sound different even when the electronic link is working correctly. Adjust placement before concluding that the pair is out of sync.

“The speakers pair individually, but not together”
- Recheck the exact model numbers and the manufacturer’s compatibility list.
- Confirm that both units use the same linking feature generation.
- Install the latest required firmware on both speakers.
- Disconnect other phones and tablets that may have seized the Bluetooth connection.
- Leave any previous stereo or party group, then repeat the maker’s documented sequence from the beginning.
“Only one speaker produces sound”
- Verify that the second speaker completed the linking confirmation rather than merely entering Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Check whether the selected feature is stereo, in which case each speaker intentionally receives only one channel.
- Raise the second speaker’s volume using the controls or app specified for that model.
- Test with a different audio track to rule out a recording with little content in one channel.
“The channels are reversed”
In stereo mode, confirm the left/right assignment in the manufacturer’s app or speaker controls. If the system has no software assignment option, physically exchange the speakers’ positions. Do not infer a fault from a track whose mix is heavily weighted to one side.
“The sound is delayed or echoes”
Move the speakers closer together for testing and remove obstacles that may weaken the wireless link. Check the product’s troubleshooting guidance for range and synchronization limits. If the feature is not an officially supported group mode, separate Bluetooth connections can produce timing differences; the cited documentation does not establish a universal phone-side method for synchronizing two unrelated Bluetooth speakers.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
“The link worked, then disappeared”
- Keep the source and both speakers within the operating range specified by their manuals.
- Check battery level and reconnect after charging.
- Reopen the manufacturer’s app if it controls the group.
- Look for a firmware requirement or compatibility change in the current support documentation.
Can two different brands or models be paired?
Do not plan on cross-brand pairing unless a manufacturer explicitly documents it. The official examples here are brand- and feature-specific, and the Bose, Sony and JBL instructions require particular model relationships for their cited modes. Even within one brand, different generations may be incompatible. A phone’s ability to remember two speakers is not proof that it can send one synchronized stream to both.
If you already own two unrelated speakers, check each manufacturer’s current manual for a named group feature that lists the other model. If no such support exists, use one speaker at a time or choose a matched pair designed for the same linking system. The available documentation does not establish a general operating-system setting that reliably creates synchronized dual output for arbitrary Bluetooth speakers.
What to look for when buying a second speaker
- Exact model match: Prefer the same model when stereo is important, because Sony, Bose and JBL specify matched models for their documented stereo modes.
- Feature name and generation: Confirm that both units support the same system, not merely Bluetooth or a similar marketing label.
- Current compatibility list: Check the manufacturer’s support page immediately before purchase because lists and firmware requirements can change.
- Desired mode: Make sure the product supports stereo if you want left/right separation, or a party/group mode if you need shared playback across areas.
- Control method: Determine whether setup uses physical buttons, a shortcut control or an app, and whether the app supports your phone’s software version.
- Expansion needs: If you may add more speakers later, verify the feature’s documented group capacity. Sony’s “up to 100” statement applies specifically to compatible Party Connect speakers, not to every model or Bluetooth connection.
Practical setup checklist
- Both full model names recorded.
- Same linking feature confirmed for both units.
- Feature generation checked, especially for products with Connect, Connect+ or PartyBoost-style families.
- Firmware and required app updates installed.
- Other Bluetooth sources disconnected.
- Source paired with the intended primary speaker.
- Second speaker added using the exact manufacturer procedure.
- Stereo or party/group mode selected intentionally.
- Left/right channels tested when using stereo.
- Speakers repositioned only after the link is stable.
Bottom line
Two Bluetooth speakers can deliver louder, more room-filling sound when their exact models support the same linking system. Use a matched pair and Stereo Pair or Stereo Mode for left/right separation; use a compatible Party or group mode for the same music across speakers. Verify model and feature compatibility, update firmware, and follow the manufacturer’s own setup sequence—there is no universal Bluetooth method that guarantees two arbitrary speakers will play together.
