To SSH into a VPS from a Mac, open Terminal and run ssh username@VPS_IP, replacing the username and address with the values supplied by your VPS provider. macOS already includes an OpenSSH client, so the basic connection does not require another app. If the server uses a port other than 22, add -p PORT. At the first connection, verify the server fingerprint before accepting it, then authenticate with the supplied password or a configured private key.
This guide explains the complete first login, key-based access for repeat connections, the differences between password and key authentication, and fixes for the common “connection refused,” “connection timed out,” and “permission denied (publickey)” errors.
What you need before connecting
SSH cannot discover your VPS account for you. Collect these details from the provider dashboard, provisioning email, or administrator first:
- The VPS public IPv4 address or a hostname that resolves to the server.
- The SSH username. This may be a provider-created account rather than your local macOS username.
- Either the provider-issued password or the private key that matches a public key installed on the VPS.
- The SSH port. Port 22 is common, but it is not universal; use the port stated by the provider instead of guessing.
Some providers also expose an out-of-band web console. It is useful when network SSH is unavailable, when the daemon needs repair, or when you must correct an account or key from inside the server.

How do I SSH into my VPS from a Mac?
1. Open Terminal
Open Terminal from Applications > Utilities, or find it with Spotlight. macOS includes the OpenSSH command-line client, so no separate SSH client installation is needed for this workflow.
2. Run the basic SSH command
At the prompt, enter:
ssh username@VPS_IP
Replace username with the remote account name and VPS_IP with the VPS public IPv4 address or hostname. Apple documents the same form, ssh username@hostname; an IP address and a domain name both occupy the hostname position.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Specify a non-default port when required
If your provider supplied a different port, include it with the lowercase -p option:
ssh -p PORT username@VPS_IP
For example, if the documented port is 2222, use ssh -p 2222 username@VPS_IP. A server listening on a custom port will not accept a connection sent to port 22, and a blocked or incorrect port can look like a server outage.
4. Check the first host-key prompt
On the first connection, SSH displays the server’s host-key fingerprint and asks whether you want to continue. This is a server-identity check, not a password prompt. Compare the fingerprint with the value shown by your provider or administrator whenever that information is available. Accept only a matching fingerprint.
After you accept it, macOS records the host key in your SSH known-hosts file. Future connections compare the presented key with the recorded one. That comparison is what lets SSH warn you if the address suddenly identifies a different machine.

5. Authenticate
If the account is configured for password authentication, SSH asks for the password. Terminal does not echo password characters while you type; the cursor may appear not to move. Press Return when finished.
If the server expects a key and your default key is not selected automatically, specify the private-key file with -i:
ssh -i /path/to/private_key username@VPS_IP
Use the private key that corresponds to a public key installed for that account. Never paste the private key into a website, chat, source repository, or shared folder.
6. Confirm the shell and exit cleanly
A remote shell prompt, usually showing the remote username and hostname, confirms that the login succeeded. Commands you run now execute on the VPS, not on your Mac. To close the session, run:
logout
You can also press Control-D at an interactive shell prompt.
Password or SSH key: which login method should you use?
Both methods can establish an SSH session, but they have different setup and operational characteristics.

| Authentication method | Initial setup | Repeat-login convenience | Password-guessing exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Password | Use the provider-issued password or one assigned to the account. | Type the password for each prompt. | Relies on protecting a reusable secret from guessing, reuse, and theft. |
| SSH key | Generate a key pair and install the public key in the target account. | Connect without sending an account password each time; a local key passphrase may still be requested. | Removes routine password authentication for that account, provided the private key remains protected. |
For a one-time recovery session, a provider password may be the fastest route. For regular administration, a passphrase-protected key avoids repeatedly entering a server password and reduces the usefulness of password-guessing attempts. Your provider’s account policy may determine which method is enabled.
How do I use an SSH key on macOS?
Generate an Ed25519 key pair when you need one
In Terminal, run:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519
Follow the prompts to choose the file location and set a passphrase. Keep the private-key file secret. The matching public key has the same base name with a .pub suffix and is the part that belongs on the VPS.
Install the public key on the VPS account
The public key must be added to the target account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file. The exact installation route depends on the provider and on whether you can complete one password-based login:
- Use the provider’s key field or account panel if the key can be injected during provisioning or added afterward.
- Use
ssh-copy-idwhere that utility is available in your environment. - Log in once with the provider password and add the public-key text to
authorized_keys.
The key must be installed for the same username you place before the @ sign. Check that the ~/.ssh directory and authorized_keys have restrictive ownership and permissions accepted by the SSH daemon; an incorrect owner or overly broad permission can cause a valid key to be rejected.
Test the key in a new session
Open a new Terminal connection using the normal SSH command, or include -i if the private key is not one of the automatically selected keys. A successful test should open the remote shell without asking for the VPS account password.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf SSH falls back to password authentication, inspect the connection with verbose output:

ssh -v username@VPS_IP
The diagnostic lines show which key files the client offered and how the server responded. Use them to check the username, private-key path, server-side authorized_keys entry, and account permissions rather than repeatedly guessing.
Which connection method should you use?
The direct Terminal session is the normal path, but a VPS provider may offer several ways to reach the machine. Their defaults differ, so read the connection details for your specific server.
- Direct SSH from Terminal: requires a reachable public address, the correct port, a username, and a password or private key.
- Provider dashboard connection: some dashboards display the address, port, initial user, or injected key details and may provide a browser-based launch action.
- Out-of-band or web console: a provider may expose a console that works even when the network SSH daemon, firewall, or account configuration needs repair. It is a recovery channel, not a reason to guess SSH credentials.
At provisioning time, some services inject an SSH key and create a particular initial user; others give you a temporary password. The initial username, key behavior, console availability, and port are provider-specific. Record the values shown for your VPS rather than assuming that every Linux image uses the same account or port.
Why does SSH say “connection timed out”?
A timeout means the client did not receive a usable response from the destination. Work through the path in this order:
- Verify the address character by character. A stale IP, an incorrect hostname, or an address from a different VPS sends traffic to the wrong destination.
- Confirm the port. If the provider specifies a custom port, rerun the command with
-p PORT; do not assume 22. - Check whether the VPS has finished provisioning and is shown as running in the provider dashboard.
- Test your local network path. A VPN, local firewall, corporate network policy, or router rule can block outbound SSH.
- Check that the VPS firewall and security rules allow inbound traffic on the documented SSH port from your current network.
- If network access remains unavailable, use the provider’s out-of-band console to inspect the SSH service and firewall from inside the machine.
Do not treat a timeout as an authentication failure: the connection has not reached the stage where a username, password, or key can be checked.

A refusal means the destination responded but no service accepted the connection on that address and port. Common causes include:

- The SSH daemon is stopped or failed to start.
- The VPS is still provisioning or has not completed its boot process.
- You selected the wrong port, or a firewall is actively rejecting that port.
- The address points to a different machine than the one you intended to administer.
Check the provider dashboard for server state, port information, and service alerts. If available, open the provider console and verify that the SSH daemon is running and configured to listen on the expected port. Once the service and port are corrected, retry the same Terminal command.

How do I fix “permission denied (publickey)”?
This message means the server did not accept any public key offered by your client. Check each matching pair:
- Username: the public key may be installed for another account. Put the correct account before
@. - Private-key path: use
-iwith the actual private-key file, not its.pubfile. - Server entry: confirm that the complete public-key line is present in that account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keys. - Permissions and ownership: make sure the
~/.sshdirectory andauthorized_keysare owned and protected as required by the SSH daemon. - Client evidence: run
ssh -vto see whether the intended key was offered and whether the server rejected it.
If you can still use a provider password or web console, repair the account’s key file there. Otherwise, the provider’s recovery console may be the only route to restore key-based access.
What should I do about a host-key or man-in-the-middle warning?
Stop before accepting a changed key. SSH warns because the host key presented by the address no longer matches the key stored from an earlier connection. A legitimate server rebuild, an IP reassignment, or a deliberate host-key rotation can cause this, but an unexpected change can also indicate that traffic is reaching the wrong machine.
- Confirm with the provider or administrator whether the VPS was rebuilt, migrated, or reassigned.
- Obtain the new fingerprint through a trusted dashboard or console and compare it with the warning.
- Proceed only after the change is explained and the new fingerprint matches the trusted value.
Do not blindly delete the old entry from known_hosts. Removing evidence without verifying the replacement key defeats the identity check SSH is providing.

Apple describes SSH as a way to “send secure, encrypted commands to a server over the network.” Encryption protects the session while it travels between Terminal and the VPS. Host-key verification adds a separate protection: it helps ensure that the endpoint is the expected server, not an impostor using the same address.
Quick Recap
- Use a non-root daily account with
sudowhen your provider and operating-system configuration support it. - Protect every private key with a strong local passphrase and keep the file out of shared folders and source control.
- Verify the first fingerprint and investigate every later host-key change.
- Keep the provider’s address, port, username, and recovery-console details in a secure password manager rather than in shell history or public notes.
- Use the provider’s documented port and authentication method; guessing credentials or ports creates avoidable lockouts and confusing errors.
