Yes—you can connect to a Linux VPS from a Chromebook without enabling developer mode. On supported Chromebooks, turn on the built-in Debian Linux development environment, open Terminal, and run ssh username@SERVER_IP. You will need the VPS address, the correct remote username, and either a password or an SSH private key.

This guide covers the Linux Terminal method, key-based authentication, first-connection fingerprint checks, custom ports, the Secure Shell browser alternative, and fixes for the most common connection errors.

Collect the three details SSH needs

SSH cannot identify your VPS from the device name alone. Before opening a terminal, obtain these three values from your VPS provider or administrator:

Required value What it means Where it usually comes from
Server address The VPS public IPv4 address or DNS hostname. The provider’s VPS dashboard or provisioning message.
Remote username The Linux account that will log in. The provider’s image documentation or administrator. It may not be root.
Authentication method A password or a private SSH key whose public half is installed for that account. The account setup process, provider key-import control, or administrator.

Do not guess the username. It depends on the operating-system image and provider configuration. A correct IP with the wrong username commonly produces a key-authentication failure even when the server is healthy.

Also confirm whether SSH uses its normal port or a custom one. A provider may display the port separately from the address, and a server administrator may have moved SSH to another port. Record the exact value before troubleshooting so that a port mistake does not look like a networking failure.

Do you need developer mode?

No. The supported ChromeOS Linux development environment is separate from the old developer-mode workflow. You can enable it from Settings and use its Debian-based container for SSH without changing the Chromebook’s developer-mode security setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux runs in its own environment, so commands typed in its Terminal execute there. Your SSH configuration, private keys, and known-hosts file are associated with that Linux environment rather than automatically with every ChromeOS app. If you remove or reset the Linux environment, files stored only inside it can be lost; keep an appropriately protected backup of any key you need to retain.

Turn on the Chromebook Linux Terminal

ChromeOS includes a Debian-based Linux environment on supported devices. Google’s Chromebook Help gives this path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select About ChromeOS.
  3. Open Developers.
  4. Choose Linux development environment and follow the setup wizard.

Google notes that setup can take “10 minutes or more” (Chromebook Help, accessed October 14, 2026). When setup finishes, open the Chromebook’s Terminal app from the launcher. The Linux container supplies standard command-line tools, including OpenSSH.

Allow the setup to finish before trying to run SSH. The first launch creates the Linux container and its home directory, which is where a conventional ~/.ssh directory and key files can reside. If Terminal opens but a command is unavailable, check that the Linux environment completed its setup rather than repeatedly changing the SSH command.

When the Linux option is missing

A work- or school-managed Chromebook may have Linux disabled by administrator policy. The hardware or ChromeOS channel may also be unsupported. In either case, you cannot fix the restriction from the SSH command line: ask the administrator whether Linux is permitted or use a browser-based Secure Shell extension if policy allows it.

Management policies can also restrict extension installation, USB or file access, and other ways of importing a key. Do not try to work around those controls with an unapproved account or copied credential. Request the organization’s approved remote-access method instead.

Connect with OpenSSH in Terminal

For a standard SSH service on the default port, run this command in Terminal:

ssh username@SERVER_IP

Replace username with the VPS account and SERVER_IP with the public IP address or hostname. For example, the structure is ssh alex@203.0.113.10; use your actual values rather than this example address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the username, at-sign, and address together with no spaces. If you use a hostname, make sure it resolves to the intended VPS. If the provider has recently reassigned an address, verify the current value in its dashboard before relying on an old connection command.

Use a nonstandard SSH port

If the administrator says SSH listens on a port other than the default, add -p followed by the port number:

ssh -p PORT username@SERVER_IP

The port must be the one configured on the VPS and allowed by its provider firewall. A wrong port can look like a server outage, so copy it exactly. The option belongs before the destination; do not append the port to the IP with a colon, which is a different notation used by some other tools.

Select a particular private key

OpenSSH searches its normal key locations automatically. If your key has another filename or is stored elsewhere in the Linux environment, specify it with -i:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ssh -i ~/.ssh/vps_ed25519 username@SERVER_IP

The path is inside the Chromebook Linux environment. A key stored only in ChromeOS’s general Downloads area is not automatically the same file as one in the Linux container; place or copy it into the Linux environment using a method you trust, then protect access to it.

When you manage several VPS accounts, explicitly selecting the identity file prevents an unrelated key from being offered first. Use the complete path that exists inside Linux, and check spelling, capitalization, and the filename extension. The public file ends in .pub; the private file normally does not.

What happens after you press Enter

SSH first contacts the address and negotiates with the server. If password authentication is enabled, it prompts for the account password. Terminal password entry normally shows no characters—not even dots—while you type. Press Enter when finished.

With key authentication, SSH uses the specified private key and the matching public key on the server. If the server accepts it, you receive a shell prompt on the VPS. Commands you run after that point execute remotely, not on the Chromebook. A prompt that looks different from the Chromebook’s shell is a useful reminder that you are now operating on the VPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle the first host-key prompt safely

On the first connection, OpenSSH normally reports that the authenticity of the host cannot be established and displays a host-key fingerprint. This is the server’s identity key, not your login password.

  1. Obtain the expected fingerprint from the VPS provider or the server administrator through a trusted channel.
  2. Compare it with the fingerprint shown in Terminal, character for character.
  3. Type yes only when the values match.

After confirmation, OpenSSH saves the host key in the Linux environment’s known-hosts file. Later connections compare the server’s key with that saved value, helping detect an unexpected replacement. The check is tied to the address you used, so connecting once by IP and later by a hostname can produce a separate first-connection prompt.

Do not dismiss a changed-key warning

If SSH reports REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED, stop and investigate. A legitimate VPS rebuild can produce this warning when the replacement server receives the same IP address, but an unexpected key change can also indicate a man-in-the-middle attack.

First verify the new fingerprint with the provider or administrator. Only after that verification, and only when the replacement is intentional, remove the obsolete entry for that address:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ssh-keygen -R SERVER_IP

Then reconnect and perform the first-connection fingerprint check again. Do not bypass the warning merely to make the command work. Deleting the old entry without checking the new fingerprint removes a useful security signal.

Use an Ed25519 SSH key instead of a password

SSH keys avoid repeatedly typing a VPS password and are the preferred durable setup when available. Ubuntu’s OpenSSH documentation recommends Ed25519 because its keys are shorter and require fewer computational resources than older alternatives.

Generate the key in Chromebook Linux

In Terminal, run:

ssh-keygen -t ed25519

When prompted, choose a protected filename (the default ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 is suitable for many users) and create a passphrase. The passphrase protects the private key if somebody obtains the file; it is separate from the VPS account password.

Do not leave the passphrase blank for a key used to administer a valuable server. A passphrase means that possession of the file alone is not sufficient to use the key. Store the passphrase in a method you can retrieve securely; losing both the passphrase and every alternate login method can lock you out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The command creates two related files:

  • id_ed25519 is the private key. Keep it secret and never paste it into a provider control panel intended for public keys.
  • id_ed25519.pub is the public key. This is the half that belongs on the VPS.

Never email, post, or paste the private-key text into a chat. If you suspect it was exposed, treat it as compromised and replace it through the provider or administrator’s key-management process.

Install the public key on the VPS account

Use the provider’s SSH-key import control, a secure provisioning process, or an existing authenticated session to add the contents of id_ed25519.pub to that account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Ubuntu documents ssh-copy-id username@target_machine as one way to append a public key when you already have a permitted login method:

ssh-copy-id username@target_machine

Replace the target and username with the real VPS values. If the provider offers only a dashboard import, paste the public-key text there exactly as generated. Never upload or disclose the private-key file.

The key must be installed for the same Linux account named in your SSH command. Placing it under another user’s home directory will not authenticate that account. If the administrator installs it manually, ask them to verify the account’s ~/.ssh directory and authorized_keys permissions as well as the exact key line.

Connect with the key

Once the public key is installed for the correct account, connect explicitly:

ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 username@SERVER_IP

If the key is in the default location and filename, OpenSSH may find it without -i, but specifying the path removes ambiguity when you manage more than one VPS. Keep password access available until you have tested the new key in a separate session, so a typo does not eliminate your only working route.

Use the Secure Shell browser alternative

Google also documents a Secure Shell extension for ChromeOS. It provides SSH and SFTP through a browser interface, so it can be useful when you prefer not to use the Linux Terminal or when Linux is unavailable but extensions are allowed by the device policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The extension does not remove the underlying requirements. You still need the VPS address, remote username, SSH port if it is nonstandard, and a password or private key. Follow the extension’s connection form for those fields, then apply the same fingerprint-verification rule at the first connection. Treat imported private keys with the same care as keys used in Terminal.

Browser access can be convenient on a managed or limited Chromebook, but the extension is still subject to organization policy and its own key-import workflow. Confirm that the extension is approved before transferring a private key into it. For repeatable command-line administration, the Linux Terminal exposes standard OpenSSH options more directly.

Choose between Terminal and the browser extension

Consideration Linux Terminal (OpenSSH) Secure Shell extension
Initial setup Enable the Debian Linux development environment; Google says setup can take 10 minutes or more. Install and configure the extension, subject to ChromeOS administrator policy.
Command-line control Full standard OpenSSH syntax, including options such as -i and -p. Uses the extension’s connection interface rather than a normal shell command.
Key-file handling Keys reside in the Linux environment and can be selected by path. Keys are handled through the extension’s browser workflow; follow its import and storage prompts carefully.
SFTP Available through Linux tools installed in the environment. Google documents Secure Shell as supporting SSH and SFTP.
Managed Chromebook compatibility Blocked if the administrator disables Linux. May also be blocked if extension installation or use is restricted.

For repeat administration, scripts, and exact OpenSSH options, Terminal is generally the more flexible choice. For a graphical browser workflow or a Chromebook where Linux cannot be enabled, the extension can be the practical alternative. Neither method changes the VPS-side requirements or the need to verify a host fingerprint.

Troubleshoot the error you see

Permission denied (publickey)

  • Check that the username is the account whose authorized_keys contains your public key.
  • Confirm that the matching public key—not a different key—was installed.
  • Check the -i path and filename in your command.
  • Ask the administrator to verify the VPS account’s SSH-directory and key-file permissions.
  • If the server allows password authentication, test the password method to distinguish a key-selection problem from a broader reachability problem.

This message usually means the server was reached but rejected the credentials offered for that account. It is different from a timeout: first verify identity details and key placement before changing firewall settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connection timed out

A timeout usually means the Chromebook cannot complete a connection to that address and port. Recheck the VPS public IP or hostname, your network reachability, the provider’s firewall rules, and the port on which SSH is supposed to listen. If the VPS has just been created or reconfigured, use the provider console to confirm its current address and firewall state.

Connection refused

This response means the host was reachable but no SSH service accepted the connection on that port. Check the VPS’s OpenSSH service and its configured port through the provider console or another administrative channel. Also make sure your command uses -p if the service was moved away from the default port.

Host-key changed warning

Do not delete the old key immediately. Verify the replacement fingerprint first. If the provider confirms an intentional rebuild or reassignment, run ssh-keygen -R SERVER_IP for that address and reconnect to record the verified key.

No Linux development environment appears in Settings

Check whether the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer and whether the administrator permits Linux. Unsupported hardware or policy restrictions can remove the option. If an extension is permitted, use the Secure Shell alternative; otherwise, request an approved access method from the administrator.

The password appears not to work

Remember that Terminal intentionally displays no characters while a password is entered. Type it carefully and press Enter. If authentication still fails, confirm the account username and whether password login is enabled; some VPS setups provide key authentication only. Do not keep guessing after repeated failures—use the provider console or administrator to confirm the account’s permitted method.

A repeatable, safer connection routine

  1. Confirm the current VPS address, account username, authentication method, and SSH port.
  2. Open Terminal, or the approved Secure Shell extension if Terminal is unavailable.
  3. Use ssh username@SERVER_IP, adding -p PORT for a custom port or -i PATH for a specific private key.
  4. On the first connection, compare the displayed fingerprint with a trusted provider or administrator value before accepting it.
  5. Use an Ed25519 key with a passphrase for a long-term setup, and install only its .pub file on the VPS.
  6. If a warning or error appears, diagnose the exact message rather than disabling verification or guessing at credentials.

With those checks in place, a Chromebook is a capable SSH client for Linux VPS administration: ChromeOS supplies the client through Debian Linux, while the VPS address, account, and verified authentication material determine whether the session succeeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I SSH into a Linux VPS from any Chromebook?

Supported Chromebooks can use the Debian Linux development environment. Work- or school-managed devices, unsupported hardware, or administrator policies may disable Linux; an approved Secure Shell extension is an alternative when extensions are allowed.

Do I have to enable developer mode?

No. ChromeOS’s Linux development environment provides Terminal and OpenSSH without enabling developer mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information do I need before connecting?

You need the VPS public IP address or hostname, the correct Linux username, and a password or private key. Also confirm the SSH port if it is not the default.

Why does SSH say Permission denied (publickey)?

Check the username, matching public key in that user’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys, the private-key path supplied with -i, and the server-side SSH file permissions.

Is an Ed25519 key better than using a password?

Ubuntu recommends Ed25519 because its keys are shorter and require fewer computational resources. Protect the private key with a passphrase and install only the public .pub file on the VPS.

What should I do about a changed host-key warning?

Stop and verify the new fingerprint with the provider or administrator. Only after confirming an intentional rebuild or replacement should you run ssh-keygen -R SERVER_IP and reconnect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use SSH without the Linux Terminal?

Yes. Google documents the Secure Shell ChromeOS extension, which supports SSH and SFTP. It still requires the same address, username, port, authentication material, and fingerprint checks.

Why does my password entry show nothing?

That is normal terminal behavior. Password characters are generally hidden while you type; enter the password and press Enter.

The Bottom Line

Enable ChromeOS Linux when supported, collect the VPS address, username, port, and authentication method, then connect with OpenSSH. Verify the host fingerprint, prefer a passphrase-protected Ed25519 key, and investigate warnings instead of bypassing them. If Linux is unavailable, use an approved Secure Shell extension with the same security checks.
