To connect newly supplied Optimum equipment, scan the QR code on the packing slip or store receipt, or open the setup link in Optimum’s order or delivery message. Follow the guided steps to connect and activate the supplied device. Once service is active, connect your phone, computer, and other devices to the home Wi-Fi network using its name and password.

Start with the setup flow for your supplied equipment

Optimum’s self-setup kit may include internet equipment, a coax cable, and a power cord. Ethernet is optional, and a coax splitter is included only if requested. Find the QR code on the packing slip or receipt, or open the link in your order or delivery email or text. The guided process may require the My Optimum app and can walk you through connections, equipment placement, and checking service. Optimum says the guided process is designed to take 15 minutes or less; that is an estimate, not a guarantee for every home. Optimum Internet self-setup

If you ordered multiple services, Optimum says to set up the internet modem or gateway first. It recommends setting up equipment soon after it arrives. If it has not activated within 14 days, contact Optimum for help. Optimum Internet self-setup

Identify whether you have a gateway or separate devices

A gateway combines modem and router functions in one unit. If your supplied device is a gateway, follow the setup flow and instructions for that model. With a separate modem and router, the modem must have an internet connection before you add the router. Do not apply one model’s indicator-light sequence or activation instructions to different equipment.

  3. Wait for the POWER, DS/US, and ONLINE lights to become solid green. Optimum says this can take a few minutes.
  4. Call the activation number as directed by the Gateway 5 guide.
  5. Set a Wi-Fi network name and password through the Optimum gateway account page, or use the default credentials printed on the gateway’s bottom label.
  6. On each phone, computer, or other device, open its Wi-Fi settings, select the network name, and enter the password.
  7. Return the old Optimum equipment.

Connect a separate legacy Optimum Smart Router

These instructions describe the older D-Link Smart Router in Optimum’s guide, not every current Optimum router or gateway. First complete modem setup or confirm that the existing modem already has internet service. Then connect Ethernet from the modem to the router’s WAN port. Optimum Smart Router guide

For Wi-Fi, connect your devices to the router’s wireless network using its credentials. A wired computer connection is optional: connect an Ethernet cable from the computer to an open LAN port on the router if you want to use one. Optimum’s guide says a computer-to-router Ethernet connection is not necessary for Wi-Fi access. If the connection is not working, its legacy guidance is to check that connections are secure and restart the modem before powering the router back on. Follow the documentation for your actual model if it differs.

Check billing and return terms when replacing equipment

Optimum’s self-setup FAQ says billing for shipped equipment begins three days after shipment, while billing for store pickup begins the same day. It also says customers replacing a modem should return the old Optimum equipment to avoid unreturned-equipment charges. Because account terms can change and may depend on your account, confirm the current details with Optimum. Optimum Internet self-setup FAQ
