To get online during a flight, keep your device in Airplane Mode, turn Wi‑Fi back on, join the airline’s onboard network, and open the carrier’s sign-in portal. You may need to verify a booking, sign in to an account, use free messaging, or buy a flight-specific plan. Wi‑Fi names, portal addresses, aircraft coverage, and access rules vary, so the operating airline’s current instructions take priority.

The process works on ordinary Wi‑Fi-enabled iPhone and Android phones, tablets, Windows laptops, and Mac laptops. It does not require cellular service: Airplane Mode can remain enabled while Wi‑Fi is active.

What you need before connecting

You need a charged Wi‑Fi-enabled device and an aircraft equipped with the service. Airline instructions cover smartphones, tablets, and laptops, but not every aircraft or route offers Wi‑Fi. Availability can change close to departure or differ between aircraft serving the same route. Check the operating airline’s current flight or onboard-connectivity information, and follow the crew’s instructions about when devices and connectivity may be used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep your phone or laptop powered on and accessible after boarding.
  • Know which airline is operating the flight, especially when you booked through another carrier.
  • Expect the service to become available only after the crew permits device use and the aircraft’s Wi‑Fi system is active.
  • Do not assume that an advertised free service applies to every aircraft, route, passenger, or type of access.

The standard connection procedure

  1. Wait for permission and an active signal. Follow the cabin crew’s timing instructions. Some services are unavailable during parts of the flight, and the exact point at which the onboard network appears varies by airline and aircraft.
  2. Turn on Airplane Mode. On a phone or tablet, open Quick Settings or Control Center and select Airplane Mode. On a laptop, use the system’s wireless controls if the airline or crew requires it. Airplane Mode is the required starting state in the airline instructions cited here.
  3. Turn Wi‑Fi back on without leaving Airplane Mode. Open the Wi‑Fi control and enable it separately. This is the important distinction: Airplane Mode can stay on while Wi‑Fi is enabled. Do not turn cellular service back on just to reach the login page.
  4. Open the Wi‑Fi list. Select the network name announced by the airline or shown in the cabin materials. Network names are carrier-specific; examples include DeltaWiFi.com, Air India Wi‑Fi, Japan Airlines, SouthwestWiFi, and the aainflight.com signal.
  5. Wait for the captive portal. After the device joins the network, a browser window or notification may open automatically. The portal is the page where the airline presents its terms, account sign-in, verification, messaging option, or purchase choices.
  6. Complete the access steps. Depending on the carrier and aircraft, enter passenger or booking details, sign in to an airline account, verify eligibility, select messaging, or choose a paid plan. Access is not universal: one flight may provide free access while another offers only selected services or paid options.
  7. Test one ordinary page or app. If the portal confirms access but the first page does not load, wait briefly and retry while remaining connected to the onboard network. Do not switch back to cellular data as a workaround.

Airline network names and portal addresses

There is no universal in-flight Wi‑Fi network or login address. Use the name and portal supplied for the airline operating your flight. These examples come from current official airline instructions accessed October 13, 2026; aircraft, routes, and onboard systems can change.

Airline example Network name or signal Portal to enter manually What the official guidance indicates
Delta Air Lines DeltaWiFi.com deltawifi.com Depending on the onboard system, access may involve a SkyMiles sign-in or a flight pass. Delta lists most Wi‑Fi-enabled Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows devices.
Air India Air India Wi‑Fi wifi.airindia.com Instructions cover laptops, tablets, and iOS or Android smartphones. The flow can include entering passenger details and selecting an onboard plan; plan prices are shown in the portal rather than fixed here.
Japan Airlines Japan Airlines jal-wifi.com Join the airline’s named onboard network and use the listed portal if the automatic page does not appear.
Southwest Airlines SouthwestWiFi SouthwestWiFi.com The airline’s network and portal use the SouthwestWiFi name. Follow the current onboard instructions for the specific flight.
American Airlines The aainflight.com signal aainflight.com American describes free access for eligible members and other plan options, with availability limited by aircraft and route.
Cathay Pacific Use the network shown in the aircraft’s instructions wifi.cathaypacific.com Cathay lists this address for the onboard portal. Confirm the network name and service availability on your flight.

Type the address exactly as supplied by the airline while still connected to its Wi‑Fi. A portal address is not a general internet site that will work from any network, and there is no single URL that works across carriers.

What happens after the portal opens

Free or account-based access

Some flights provide access after an airline-account sign-in or an eligibility check. Delta’s instructions describe SkyMiles login or a flight pass depending on the onboard system. American describes free access for eligible members alongside other options. The fact that one carrier offers free access does not mean every flight, passenger, or device receives it.

Messaging-only access

An airline may offer a limited messaging option rather than unrestricted browsing. The portal should state which services are included before you proceed. If you need web pages, streaming, work systems, or other traffic, check whether the selected option covers those uses instead of assuming that “connected” means full internet access.

Paid plans

Paid access is another common category. Air India’s instructions direct passengers to the onboard portal for available plans and prices. Because plans can depend on the aircraft, route, and date, do not rely on a universal price or assume that a pass bought on one flight transfers to another. Review the portal’s terms and total charge before confirming.

Verification and passenger details

The portal may ask for information such as passenger details, an airline account, or booking verification. Enter it only on the page reached after joining the correct onboard network and checking that the address matches the airline’s published portal. If the requested details do not match your booking, use the airline’s onboard help option or ask the crew rather than repeatedly submitting guesses.

  5. Finish the displayed sign-in, eligibility, messaging, or payment steps.

  3. Select the airline’s onboard network.
  4. Use the notification that appears for the sign-in page. If Android does not show it, open a browser and enter the airline’s portal address manually.
  5. Complete the carrier’s access flow and leave Airplane Mode enabled.

Android manufacturers use different menu names. Look for the Wi‑Fi network list rather than enabling mobile data.

Laptop instructions

Windows laptop

  1. Select the network, volume, or battery area on the taskbar to open Quick Settings.
  2. Turn on Airplane Mode.
  3. Open the Wi‑Fi list and turn Wi‑Fi on while Airplane Mode remains enabled.
  4. Select the airline’s network and choose Connect.
  5. Open your default browser if the portal does not launch, then enter the airline’s published address.
  6. Sign in, verify, or purchase the access option shown for the flight.

Mac laptop

  1. Use Control Center or the menu bar to turn on Airplane Mode if your macOS and airline instructions provide that control.
  2. Open the Wi‑Fi menu and enable Wi‑Fi separately.
  3. Choose the airline’s network.
  4. Accept the portal prompt, or open Safari or another browser and enter the airline’s listed portal address.
  5. Complete the displayed access steps before trying other websites.

Delta’s published device guidance includes most Wi‑Fi-enabled macOS and Windows devices. Other carriers identify supported devices differently, so check the operating airline’s current requirements when a specific laptop fails to connect.

If the login page does not appear

The most common fix is to remain connected to the onboard network and enter the airline’s portal address yourself. Use the address for your carrier only:

Use a browser, not a saved bookmark

Open a fresh browser tab and type the address rather than selecting a bookmark that may point to an old page. Confirm that the device still shows the airline’s network as connected. If the browser reports that there is no internet, that can be normal before the portal authorizes access; the onboard login page is the next step.

Temporarily close network-changing features

If the portal repeatedly fails to redirect, pause any setting that automatically changes networks, such as a Wi‑Fi assistant or a “join known networks” feature. Then reconnect to the airline’s network and open the published portal address. Re-enable those settings after the session if you normally use them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forget and rejoin the network

  1. Open the device’s saved Wi‑Fi networks.
  2. Select the airline network and choose Forget or Remove this network.
  3. Return to the Wi‑Fi list and select the same onboard network again.
  4. Keep Airplane Mode on, then retry the portal address.

Do this only after confirming that you selected the airline’s real network; forgetting a network does not fix a flight whose Wi‑Fi system is unavailable.

If no airline network appears

First verify timing. The crew may not have enabled the service yet, or the flight may be in a phase when connectivity is restricted. If the network remains absent after the announced availability time, check whether your aircraft and route are covered. Air India warns that availability can change at the last minute; Delta describes different onboard Wi‑Fi systems; American limits its offer by aircraft and route.

  • Ask the crew whether Wi‑Fi is expected on this aircraft.
  • Check that Wi‑Fi, rather than only cellular service, is enabled.
  • Move away from a crowded area only if it is safe and permitted; do not ignore seat-belt or crew instructions while troubleshooting.
  • Restart Wi‑Fi or restart the device only when the crew’s instructions allow normal device use.
  • If the airline confirms that the service is not installed or is unavailable, there is no device setting that can create an onboard connection.

If you connect but still cannot browse

The portal says access is not included

Read the options shown for the current flight. You may have reached a messaging-only service, an account-eligible offer, or a paid-plan screen rather than a full browsing session. Confirm the selected option before paying, and remember that terms differ by carrier and aircraft.

Sign-in or verification fails

Check the account credentials or passenger details carefully. If the airline requires an eligible account or booking, the portal may reject a different passenger’s information. Use the onboard support link or ask the crew for the carrier’s approved assistance route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection drops

Remain in Airplane Mode with Wi‑Fi enabled and reconnect to the same onboard network if it disappears briefly. Coverage and continuity are not established consistently across all airlines and flights, so a drop can reflect the aircraft system or route rather than a defect in your phone or laptop. Do not promise yourself a particular speed or uninterrupted service.

The browser shows a certificate or address warning

Stop and recheck the address against the airline’s published portal. Do not enter payment or account details into a look-alike page. If the correct address still produces a warning, use the airline’s onboard support instructions or ask the crew.

Practical connection checklist

  • Wait until the crew permits device use and the onboard system is active.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode.
  • Turn Wi‑Fi on separately; leave cellular service off.
  • Select the airline’s exact onboard network name.
  • Wait for the captive portal, then open the carrier’s published address manually if needed.
  • Have the required account, passenger details, or payment method ready.
  • Read whether the offer is free, account-based, messaging-only, or paid.
  • Verify that the aircraft and route actually provide Wi‑Fi.
  • If the network or portal is unavailable, follow crew guidance instead of repeatedly changing device settings.

Key points to remember

Airplane Mode and Wi‑Fi are not mutually exclusive: the reliable setup is Airplane Mode on, Wi‑Fi on separately. Join the airline’s own network, not a similarly named network, and use the airline-specific portal when automatic sign-in fails. Access conditions can differ by aircraft, route, passenger eligibility, and plan, so the operating airline’s current flight information is the final authority. The official pages cited for Delta, Air India, Japan Airlines, Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, and Cathay Pacific provide examples rather than a guarantee for every carrier.
