To connect to an Unturned server with Rocket RCON, install or enable RocketMod, turn on RCON in Rocket.config.xml, choose the configured listening port and a strong password, restart the server, then open a Telnet connection to the server’s external IP and authenticate with login <your-rcon-password>. If the connection fails, check the active Rocket port, firewall rules, and router forwarding before changing the game ports.
What Rocket RCON does
Rocket RCON is RocketMod’s remote-console interface for an Unturned server. It uses a Telnet-style connection, so you can send server-console commands from another computer without joining the game. Host Havoc’s technical guide describes the practical benefit plainly: “RCON lets you run server commands remotely without being in-game.”

The server must therefore have RocketMod installed and running before the RCON settings in Rocket.config.xml can provide a listener. RCON access is separate from a player login: you authenticate to the remote console with the RCON password, while any in-game command restrictions still depend on the server’s administrator permissions and loaded modules.
Before you begin
- Server-side RocketMod: Install or enable RocketMod on the Unturned server. Host Havoc’s instructions list this as a prerequisite.
- Configuration access: You need the host panel’s file editor or access to the server files so you can edit
Rocket.config.xml. - Permission to restart: RCON settings take effect after the server is restarted, so schedule a restart if the server is active.
- A reachable network address: For an off-site connection, use the server’s external IPv4 address or a domain that resolves to it.
- A Telnet-capable client: PuTTY is one interactive option; another compatible RCON or Telnet client can work if it supports a raw Telnet-style session.
- A secure credential: Create a unique, difficult-to-guess RCON password and keep it out of screenshots, scripts, chat, and shell history.
How to enable Rocket RCON in Rocket.config.xml
1. Stop the server
Stop the Unturned server from the hosting panel or its service manager before editing the configuration. Editing a live file can be overwritten when the process shuts down, and a restart is required for the new listener settings to load.

2. Open the Rocket configuration
Open Rocket.config.xml in the host panel or in the server’s RocketMod configuration directory. Locate the RCON element. CraftingStore’s example uses this structure:
<RCON Enabled="false" Port="21321" Password="changeme" ... />The exact surrounding attributes can vary by RocketMod installation, but the settings you need are the enabled state, the port, and the password.
3. Enable the listener and set credentials
Change Enabled to true. Replace the sample password with a strong, unique value that is not used for the panel, FTP, SSH, or any personal account. Choose an unused port that your host allows and record it exactly; the client must use this value later.
A resulting element will have the same shape as the example, with your own values:

4. Save and restart
Save the XML without changing its quotation marks or element structure, then start or restart the server. Host Havoc’s sequence is: stop the server, open the configuration files, edit Rocket.config.xml, enable RCON, set a strong password, note the port, save, and start the server.

If you change the password or port later, stop the server, edit the file, save it, and restart again. A client using the previous value will continue to fail even if the new XML appears correct.
Which port should you use?
Use the port explicitly configured for Rocket RCON in Rocket.config.xml or displayed by your hosting panel. Do not automatically use the Unturned game port.
Unturned’s official command reference documents the Port command and explains that the game server uses two consecutive ports, with the first one shown in that command. Rocket RCON is a separate listener whose value comes from Rocket’s own configuration or from the host’s Rocket settings.
Some configuration documentation says that when RCON is added to Commands.dat without an explicit port, it defaults to Port + 1. That convention does not override a host implementation that exposes Rocket’s separately configured port. If the values disagree, inspect the active Rocket configuration and panel value, then verify which TCP port is actually offered by the server.

Make the port reachable
Hosted server
Managed providers often expose Rocket’s RCON port in their control panel. Allow that TCP port in the server firewall or provider firewall, and use the provider’s external IPv4 address and configured port. Some panels also provide a web console or an RCON connection record; those interfaces still depend on the same server-side listener and credentials.
Self-hosted server behind a router
If the server runs on a home or office network, the public address belongs to the router, not directly to the computer running Unturned. Create a router forwarding rule that sends the chosen TCP RCON port to the server machine’s private address. Unturned documentation describes forwarding as directing Internet traffic to the machine hosting the server.
Also permit the same TCP port in the operating system firewall. Forwarding alone is not enough if the host firewall drops the connection, and a firewall exception alone is not enough if the router has no route from the Internet.
Local or LAN administration
For a client on the same network, use the server machine’s reachable local address and the configured RCON port. You generally do not need an Internet-facing forwarding rule for a purely local connection, but the host firewall still has to allow the traffic.
Connect with PuTTY or another Telnet client
- Open the client. In PuTTY, start a new session.
- Enter the address. In Host Name (or IP address), enter the server’s external IPv4 address for an Internet connection, or its local address for LAN access.
- Select Telnet. Choose Telnet as the connection type rather than SSH or a different protocol.
- Enter the RCON port. Use the value from the active Rocket configuration or host panel, not an assumed game port.
- Open the session. Start the connection. A successful network path should produce the remote console prompt or a place to enter a command.
- Authenticate. Enter the following command, substituting the password stored in
Rocket.config.xml:
login <your-rcon-password>CraftingStore’s connection instructions follow the same pattern: enter the external IPv4 address, configured port, and password in an RCON connection record. A different Telnet-capable client uses the same essential values.

Verify the session with safe commands
After the login command is accepted, begin with a non-destructive command. The official Unturned command reference includes these useful checks:

Command names and available syntax can depend on the server version and loaded RocketMod modules or plugins. A successful RCON login does not guarantee that every plugin command exists on your installation.
RCON authentication versus administrator permissions
The RCON password authorizes the remote console connection. It is not the same thing as granting every player account administrator status. When commands are entered through in-game chat, the server’s administrator permissions still apply. Hosting documentation notes that runtime commands can be entered in the server console or from in-game chat by administrators, with @ or / prefixes used in chat.
If a command works in the remote console but not in chat, check the player’s permissions and the required chat prefix. If a command is absent from both places, check whether the relevant RocketMod module or plugin is installed and loaded.
Interactive client, panel console, or compatible RCON software?

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosted configuration and forwarding
With a self-hosted server, you control RocketMod installation, the XML file, the operating-system firewall, the router, and the external address. This provides the most control, but every layer can block the connection. A changed private IP can also invalidate a router forwarding rule, so reserve the server machine’s local address when your network supports that option.

Managed Unturned hosting
A managed provider may install or expose RocketMod, allocate the RCON port, and supply a panel workflow. You still need to read the active Rocket setting, use the provider’s current external address, set a strong password, and restart after edits. Provider-specific labels and port allocation policies can differ, so treat the panel’s displayed value as the operational reference rather than assuming a standard number.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Connection refused or timeout
- Recheck the external IPv4 address or domain name.
- Confirm that the client’s port exactly matches Rocket’s configured RCON port.
- Verify that the host firewall allows TCP traffic on that port.
- For a home network, confirm router forwarding to the correct server machine and private address.
- Check that RocketMod is installed or enabled and that the server was restarted after RCON was enabled.
A refusal usually means the address is reachable but no service is accepting the connection on that port; a timeout commonly indicates filtering, forwarding, or an incorrect destination. Treat both as network or listener checks before changing passwords.
Login rejected
- Use the password currently stored in
Rocket.config.xml, including its capitalization and punctuation. - Make sure the file was saved before the last restart.
- Restart the server after changing the password; editing the file without restarting does not reliably update a running listener.
- Check that you are connecting to the intended server and not an old address or a different instance using another configuration.
Login succeeds but commands do nothing
- Run
HelporPlayersto verify that the authenticated session is active. - Check the command’s spelling and syntax.
- Confirm that the command belongs to the installed Unturned version or a loaded RocketMod plugin.
- For in-game chat, verify administrator permissions and use the required
@or/prefix.
The port seems wrong
Do not infer the RCON endpoint from the game’s consecutive ports. Read the active Rocket configuration or panel value. If Commands.dat suggests Port + 1 but the host exposes another value, use the value the running Rocket installation is configured to listen on and confirm it with the provider.
The XML will not load
- Restore a backup of the last known-good configuration.
- Check that the RCON element remains valid XML, with matching quotation marks and a closed element.
- Change only the enabled state, port, and password first; avoid deleting unrelated attributes.
- Restart and inspect the host panel or server log for a configuration error before attempting the client connection again.
Security practices for remote administration
- Use a long, unique RCON password; never reuse a game, panel, email, or operating-system password.
- Do not publish the password in screenshots, tutorials, command history, tickets, or shared configuration files.
- Expose RCON only on a port you intend to use, and restrict that port to trusted source addresses when your firewall or provider supports allow-lists.
- Prefer LAN access or a private administrative network when remote Internet access is unnecessary.
- Review who has access to the hosting panel and to any saved RCON connection profiles.
- Change the password if it has been disclosed, and restart the server so the new credential is active.
A repeatable connection checklist
- Confirm RocketMod is installed or enabled.
- Stop the server and open
Rocket.config.xml. - Set
Enabled="true", choose an available port, and create a unique password. - Save the file and restart the server.
- Record the external IPv4 address and the configured Rocket RCON port.
- Allow that TCP port through the host firewall and, if applicable, forward it through the router.
- In PuTTY, select Telnet, enter the address and port, and open the session.
- Authenticate with
login <your-rcon-password>. - Run

Frequently overlooked details
- RCON is not the game port: Unturned’s gameplay ports and Rocket’s console listener can be different.
- A restart matters: Both enabling RCON and changing its password require the running server to reload the configuration.
- External versus local address: Internet clients need the public endpoint; LAN clients may use the server’s private address.
- Protocol selection matters: PuTTY must use Telnet for this Rocket-style connection, not SSH.
- Plugins change the command set: A command listed in a general reference may not exist if its module is not loaded on your server.
Frequently Asked Questions
What port is Rocket RCON on?
There is no universal port to assume. Use the port shown in the active Rocket.config.xml or supplied by the hosting panel. Unturned’s game ports are separate, and some Commands.dat documentation describes a Port + 1 default only when no explicit RCON port is provided.
Can I connect without RocketMod?
Not for this Rocket RCON setup. RocketMod must be installed or enabled on the server before its RCON listener can be configured.
Why does PuTTY time out?
Check the external IP, Rocket RCON port, host firewall, and router forwarding. Also confirm that RCON is enabled and the server was restarted after editing the configuration.
What command logs me in?
After opening the Telnet session, enter login <your-rcon-password>, using the password currently stored in Rocket.config.xml.
Which commands should I test first?
Use Help or Players as harmless checks. The official command reference also lists Save and Say for administrative use.
