To play American Truck Simulator (ATS) online, use TruckersMP, a third-party multiplayer modification. It is not an official SCS Software multiplayer mode. You need a legitimate ATS installation, a TruckersMP account linked to the Steam account that owns the game, the TruckersMP Launcher, a supported ATS version, and an active internet connection. The normal setup is Windows-first: install the launcher, point it to ATS, download its files, sign in, choose a server, and click Drive.
Check TruckersMP’s current supported-version list before updating ATS. A launcher update and a game update must remain compatible; an unsupported ATS build can prevent TruckersMP from starting even when the game itself runs normally.
What “ATS multiplayer” means
American Truck Simulator does not provide the server-connection workflow described here as a built-in SCS Software feature. TruckersMP supplies the community multiplayer layer: it launches ATS through its own client, authenticates your TruckersMP account, and presents a list of community servers.
That distinction matters when something breaks. SCS Software support covers the base game, while TruckersMP maintains the launcher, multiplayer client, server access and its own rules. A fix for single-player ATS is not necessarily a fix for TruckersMP, and a TruckersMP update may be required after ATS changes.

TruckersMP hooks into the single-player game process to add multiplayer functions. Consequently, it needs more access than a conventional sound, texture or vehicle mod. Install it only from the TruckersMP project and expect it to update independently of Steam.
Requirements before you install
Gather these items before running the installer. Missing one usually produces a setup failure rather than a server-side problem.

A Steam community guide also says that the Steam profile should be public and show at least two hours of recorded playtime in both Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator. Treat that as a guide-specific community requirement, not as an independently confirmed rule on TruckersMP’s own requirements page. If registration fails despite meeting the core requirements, make the profile public and ensure the games have recorded playtime, then try again.
Create a TruckersMP account and link Steam
- Open the TruckersMP website and choose the registration option.
- Create your TruckersMP credentials using an email address you can access. Confirm the account if the site requests email verification.
- Choose the option to connect a Steam account.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns American Truck Simulator. Do not link a family member’s or secondary account unless that account actually owns ATS.
- Return to your TruckersMP account page and verify that the Steam profile appears as connected.
Keep your TruckersMP password available for the launcher. Steam authentication proves game ownership, but it does not replace the TruckersMP login shown by the multiplayer client.

Download and install the TruckersMP Launcher
TruckersMP distributes a small launcher whose job is to keep the multiplayer installation current. Rather than downloading a complete package every time, it downloads only files that have changed. The installer is commonly named TruckersMP-Setup.exe.
- Download the installer from the official TruckersMP download page.
- Run
TruckersMP-Setup.exewith your normal Windows account. If Windows asks for permission, confirm only when the file came from the official TruckersMP site. - Accept the installation terms and choose an installation location with enough free space for the client files and future updates.
- Open the installed TruckersMP Launcher after setup completes.
The launcher may update itself before displaying game choices. Let that process finish; closing it while files are being replaced can leave an incomplete installation.

Point the launcher to American Truck Simulator
On first run, select American Truck Simulator in the launcher’s game selector. The launcher normally finds the Steam installation automatically. If it cannot, set the path manually.
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click American Truck Simulator and choose Properties.
- Open Local Files.
- Choose Browse (the wording can vary slightly with Steam updates).
- Copy or note the folder that opens. In TruckersMP, use that folder as the ATS installation path.
- Save the path and allow the launcher to validate it.
Select the game’s main installation directory, not a parent Steam library folder and not a subfolder containing only screenshots or profiles. If you have multiple Steam libraries, repeat the Browse process from the ATS entry in Steam so you select the active installation.

Check the ATS version before updating
TruckersMP publishes the ATS builds its client can currently use. The download page has listed versions including ATS 1.61.3.1s; that entry is an example of a supported build, not a permanent promise that it remains supported. Always use the page’s current list when deciding whether to update or roll back.
- Open the TruckersMP download or compatibility information page before launching an ATS update.
- Record the ATS version currently installed in Steam.
- Compare it with the ATS version listed as supported by TruckersMP.
- If they match, continue with the launcher setup.
- If Steam is about to install a newer build that is not listed, postpone the update when Steam allows it and wait for TruckersMP compatibility, or follow TruckersMP’s documented instructions for selecting a supported Steam beta branch.
A pending TruckersMP or ATS update can prevent the mod from starting. Do not assume that a successful single-player launch proves multiplayer compatibility. Also, whether an update limited to Euro Truck Simulator 2 leaves ATS playable is not established; check the current TruckersMP status for the specific game instead of relying on assumptions.

- In the launcher, confirm that American Truck Simulator is selected.
- Click Download Updates.
- Wait until the progress indicator finishes. Keep the launcher open and avoid deleting its installation directory during this stage.
- Restart the launcher if it asks you to do so, then run the update check again until no pending files remain.
The first download can take longer than later checks because the client must create its local file set. Subsequent launches normally retrieve only changed files, so an apparently small update can still take time if many files changed in that release.
Join an ATS server for the first time
Launch ATS from the TruckersMP client rather than from Steam’s ordinary Play button.

- Open TruckersMP Launcher and choose American Truck Simulator.
- Start the game through the launcher.
- After the game and SCS logos, wait for the custom TruckersMP login screen.
- Enter your TruckersMP account credentials and sign in.
- Read and accept the TruckersMP rules if the client presents them. You may not be allowed to continue until you approve them.
- Choose a server from the server list. Consider the displayed region, population and any special rules before connecting.
- Click Drive.
When the connection succeeds, the game loads into the selected multiplayer environment. Server rules apply in addition to the normal ATS controls and economy. Read the rules before driving, especially if you plan to use a busy public server.
Native Windows versus unofficial Linux and macOS setups

TruckersMP and SCS do not endorse these community launchers. They may require separate troubleshooting, have different update timing and stop working after a platform or game change. If your priority is a predictable connection, Windows remains the supported path described by TruckersMP’s requirements.

The launcher says ATS is unsupported
Compare the exact ATS build installed by Steam with TruckersMP’s current supported-version list. If Steam updated ATS recently, the multiplayer client may not yet support that build. Do not repeatedly reinstall the launcher; reinstalling does not make an incompatible game version supported. Wait for compatibility instructions or use only a Steam version-selection method that TruckersMP explicitly documents.
TruckersMP cannot find ATS
Open Steam’s ATS entry, choose Properties → Local Files → Browse, and select the folder that opens in the launcher. Confirm that the path contains the ATS installation itself. If you moved the game to another Steam library, remove the old path and select the new one. A path to the Steam library root or to a user-profile folder will not identify the game correctly.

Download Updates stops or repeats
Check that the internet connection remains active and that the launcher can write to its installation directory. Close the launcher, reopen it, and run the update check again. If the same files repeatedly fail, confirm that security software is not quarantining the client and that you have free disk space. Downloading from the official launcher is preferable to copying files from another player because the launcher verifies the files it needs.
The custom login screen never appears
Make sure ATS was started from TruckersMP, not directly from Steam. Confirm that the launcher finished its update cycle and that American Truck Simulator, rather than another installed game, is selected. If the base game opens normally but the TruckersMP login does not, close ATS, restart the launcher, and check the supported-version list before trying again.
Steam ownership or profile checks fail
Sign out of Steam in the browser and sign back in with the account that owns ATS, then repeat the TruckersMP linking process. If you followed the community guide’s profile conditions, set the Steam profile to public and verify that both ATS and ETS2 show at least two hours of recorded playtime. Those two-hour conditions come from that guide and may not represent a universal TruckersMP rule, so consult TruckersMP’s own account guidance if the problem persists.
You can sign in but cannot enter a server
Check whether the server is available and whether your client has finished all updates. Re-read any rule or confirmation prompt; the Drive button may remain unavailable until the rules are accepted. If one server fails while another is selectable, try a different server to distinguish a server-specific issue from a local installation or account problem.
A Linux or macOS installation breaks after an update
Unofficial Wine, Proton and macOS launchers have their own compatibility layers. Check the maintenance notes for the particular community tool, then verify that native ATS and TruckersMP versions are still supported. A change in any of the four components—ATS, TruckersMP, Wine or the operating system—can require a new configuration. Native Windows troubleshooting steps do not guarantee a fix for these setups.
Keeping the connection working
- Check TruckersMP’s compatibility list before allowing a major ATS update.
- Run the launcher’s update check after TruckersMP announces a client change.
- Keep the Steam account linked to TruckersMP unchanged unless you deliberately transfer ownership access through the account settings.
- Launch ATS through TruckersMP whenever you want to join a server.
- Read current TruckersMP rules and server notices; community policies can change independently of the game.
- Use the official TruckersMP installation and launcher knowledge-base instructions when an older Steam guide conflicts with current labels or requirements.
Older guides can still show the correct general sequence but use obsolete screenshots, installer names or version assumptions. The TruckersMP installation and launcher knowledge-base article is the better authority when its instructions conflict with a community walkthrough.
What you should expect from the setup
The complete path is straightforward on Windows: own ATS, create and link a TruckersMP account, install TruckersMP-Setup.exe, select the ATS directory, download updates, sign in at the custom TruckersMP screen, choose a server and press Drive. The main ongoing responsibility is version management. TruckersMP is a third-party client that must catch up with ATS releases, so checking compatibility before Steam updates is more useful than reinstalling after every failed launch.
