You can connect to a Windows computer remotely when the computer being accessed runs a Pro edition of Windows, Remote Desktop is enabled on that computer, and you know its PC name. The connecting device has fewer restrictions: it can run Windows Home or Pro, macOS, iOS, Android, or another supported operating system. On Windows, use Remote Desktop Connection; on macOS and iOS, use Windows App; on Android, use the Remote Desktop app.
The process has three stages: verify the host edition, turn on Remote Desktop and record the PC name, then add that PC in the client app and sign in. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, although that date does not by itself mean an existing Windows 10 installation immediately stops working. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop instructions are the reference for the workflow described here.
Understand the host and the client
Remote Desktop uses two devices with different roles:
- Host: the Windows PC you want to control. This is the computer that must meet the Windows Pro requirement and have Remote Desktop enabled.
- Client: the computer, phone, or tablet you are using to connect. The client does not have to run Windows Pro. A Windows client can be Home or Pro, and Microsoft also documents clients running macOS, iOS, and Android.
Keeping those roles separate prevents a common setup mistake. The Windows edition requirement applies to the PC being accessed, not automatically to the device in your hands. A Windows Home laptop can therefore act as the client for a Windows Pro desktop.

Check whether the host can accept Remote Desktop
Verify the Windows edition
Perform this check on the PC you want to access:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Find the Windows edition entry.
- Confirm that the edition is Windows Pro.
Microsoft identifies Windows Pro as the host requirement in its current support guidance. If the host is not running Pro, the documented Remote Desktop host workflow does not meet the stated prerequisite. Do not confuse this check with the client’s edition: the connecting Windows PC may be Home or Pro.
Identify which device is which
If you are preparing several computers, write down the name of the PC that will be accessed and label it as the host. The device from which you will open a client app is the client. This simple distinction matters because the Remote Desktop setting is changed on the host, while the connection is created on the client.
Enable Remote Desktop on the Windows host
After confirming that the host runs Windows Pro, enable the feature on that same PC:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn Remote Desktop on.
- Confirm the change when Windows asks you to do so.
- Record the displayed PC name. You will enter this name in the client application.
The PC name is the identifier Microsoft’s instructions use when you add the computer from another device. Copy it carefully, preserving its spelling and punctuation. If you are setting up access for someone else, provide the PC name exactly as it appears in the host’s Remote Desktop settings.

Enabling the setting is a host-side action. Opening an app on the second device before this step is complete does not configure the host; return to the host’s Settings > System > Remote Desktop page if you need to verify the switch.
Connect from a Windows computer
A Windows client can be Home or Pro. Microsoft’s current Windows workflow uses the built-in Remote Desktop Connection application.
- On the client Windows PC, open Search.
- Search for Remote Desktop Connection.
- Open the matching application.
- Enter the host’s recorded PC name.
- Select Connect.
- Sign in when prompted.
Use the host name from the host’s settings rather than a descriptive nickname you created for the computer. The name is the value Microsoft instructs you to enter. The sign-in stage authenticates you to the Windows PC; complete it with the account details accepted by that host.

If the Windows client is also running Windows 10
The same broad Windows 10 and Windows 11 instructions are covered by Microsoft’s support article. However, Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That is a support-status statement, not a claim that an already installed Windows 10 client or host automatically becomes unusable on that date. Consider the support status when deciding whether to continue using that operating system, but do not treat the date as a connection error by itself.

Connect from macOS or iOS
For a Mac or an iPhone or iPad, Microsoft names Windows App as the client. The host preparation is unchanged: the Windows computer being accessed must be Pro, Remote Desktop must be on, and you need its PC name.
- Open Windows App on the macOS or iOS client.
- Use the option to add a PC.
- Enter the host’s PC name.
- Save or confirm the added PC according to the app’s interface.
- Select the PC you added.
- Sign in when prompted.
The key platform difference is the client application’s name and layout. Do not look for the Windows-only Remote Desktop Connection program on macOS or iOS; follow the Windows App workflow instead. Selecting the saved PC starts the connection to the host name you entered.
Connect from Android
On Android, Microsoft identifies the Remote Desktop app as the client. As with the other platforms, complete the host configuration first.
- Open the Remote Desktop app on the Android device.
- Add a PC.
- Enter the Windows host’s PC name.
- Save or confirm the PC entry.
- Select the PC you added.
- Sign in when prompted.
Android uses a different client name from macOS and iOS, but the information you provide is the same: the PC name of the Windows host and the credentials requested during sign-in.

Choose the correct client instructions

This table compares the client side only. The host-side requirements do not change with the client platform: check the host edition, enable Remote Desktop, and record the host’s PC name before attempting the connection.
What happens during sign-in
After you select Connect on Windows or select the saved PC in a mobile or Mac client, the app asks you to sign in. This is the point at which you provide the account information required by the Windows host. The exact prompts can vary with the client platform, but the sequence remains the same: identify the host by its PC name, start the connection, and authenticate.
If you are helping another person, have them perform the host-side setup while physically at the Windows PC, including recording the PC name. The remote user can then follow the client-specific steps without guessing which computer name to enter.

Troubleshoot the documented setup path
The Remote Desktop setting is missing or the host does not meet the requirement
Return to Settings > System > About on the computer you want to access and check the Windows edition. The Pro requirement belongs to the host. Checking the client’s edition instead can lead you to the wrong conclusion.

You do not know what name to enter
On the host, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop and read the displayed PC name. Enter that value in the Windows client, Windows App, or Remote Desktop app. Avoid substituting a room name, a person’s name, or another label that is not the PC name shown by Windows.
Remote Desktop was never enabled
Perform the host-side procedure again: open Settings > System > Remote Desktop, turn the feature on, and confirm the change. The client cannot compensate for a host on which the setting remains off.
You opened the wrong client
Match the application to the device you are using. Windows uses Remote Desktop Connection; macOS and iOS use Windows App; Android uses the Remote Desktop app. If the application name in your instructions does not match your platform, switch to the corresponding section above.

Recheck the host name you entered and confirm that you are signing in after selecting the intended PC. The documented workflow requires both a correctly identified host and successful sign-in. If the problem persists after those checks, Microsoft’s support article is the appropriate reference for any platform-specific prompts or updates to the app interface.
Important scope and support notes
The procedure above explains the documented host and client setup using a PC name. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish router configuration, public-internet access, firewall changes, or whether a VPN is required for a particular network. Those decisions depend on the network and security arrangement, so do not assume that entering a PC name alone answers them for every environment.
Microsoft’s instructions are framed for Windows 11 and Windows 10. Because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, an organization still using it should distinguish between the ability of an existing installation to run and Microsoft’s current support status. The end-of-support date should not be presented as an automatic shutdown of Remote Desktop.
Complete connection sequence
- On the Windows computer to be accessed, open Settings > System > About and verify that its edition is Pro.
- On that same computer, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn Remote Desktop on, confirm the change, and record the displayed PC name.
- On the device you will use remotely, open the client for its platform: Remote Desktop Connection on Windows, Windows App on macOS or iOS, or the Remote Desktop app on Android.
- Add or enter the recorded PC name. On Windows, choose Connect; on the other clients, select the PC you added.
- Sign in when prompted.
