Connect to a remote MySQL server from PHP with the PDO_MYSQL driver, using the database server’s DNS name or IP address—not localhost—and its listening port. A typical connection supplies a mysql: DSN, credentials from environment variables, exception handling, associative fetches, and native prepared statements.
Before changing PHP code, verify that the driver is enabled, the server listens on a reachable interface, firewalls and security groups allow the connection, and the MySQL account permits logins from the PHP host. These checks distinguish a network failure from an authentication failure.

A remote connection has four independent layers. PHP must have the PDO_MYSQL driver; the application must identify the correct host, port, and database; the network must carry TCP traffic to that endpoint; and MySQL must accept the account from the PHP server’s source address. Encryption and certificate verification protect credentials and queries while they cross the network.
- Client: PHP with PDO_MYSQL enabled.
- Endpoint: A DNS name or IP address and the MySQL TCP port, commonly 3306.
- Server: MySQL listening on a reachable interface, with host firewalls and cloud controls allowing the port.
- Account: A dedicated, least-privilege MySQL user whose host permissions include the PHP server.
- Transport security: TLS when the route is not fully trusted.
PHP’s PDO connection constructor takes a DSN, username, password, and options array. A failed connection raises PDOException, so production code should log a useful server-side error without exposing credentials to visitors.

Use the correct host and port
Remote host names are not localhost
In PDO_MYSQL, localhost is special: PHP asks for a Unix-domain socket connection on the same machine. It does not mean “the computer running my browser,” and it does not point to a separate database server. For a remote database, use its DNS name or IP address, such as db.example.com. For a local TCP test, use 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost.
Managed database endpoints
A managed service supplies a specific endpoint and port. For an Amazon RDS instance, AWS instructs clients to use the DB instance endpoint as the host and the endpoint’s port. Copy the endpoint exactly; do not substitute the service console URL, a private resource identifier, or a web address.
Ports and address families
Use the port on which MySQL is listening. The conventional value is 3306, but an administrator may choose another port. If DNS resolves to both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, make sure the PHP host has a route and firewall permission for the address family it selects. A correct hostname with an unreachable address can look like a bad password until network testing is performed.
Prerequisites checklist
- Enable PDO_MYSQL. PHP documents PDO_MYSQL as the driver that implements the PDO interface for MySQL. Check the PHP runtime used by the web server, not only a different command-line PHP installation. Running
php -mshould showpdo_mysql. - Collect the endpoint details. Record the database DNS name or IP, TCP port, database name, username, and password. Keep the endpoint and port together because managed services can use non-default ports.
- Confirm MySQL is listening remotely. The MySQL
bind_addresssystem variable controls which addresses accept TCP/IP connections. A loopback-only setting prevents remote clients even when the service is running. - Open the path. Permit the port in the database host firewall, cloud security group, and any network ACL or perimeter firewall between the two machines.
- Create a restricted account. MySQL accounts include an allowed source host. Grant only the schemas and operations the application needs, and include the PHP server’s address or private network rather than allowing every host.
- Test from the PHP host. Check DNS resolution and TCP reachability from the machine that runs PHP. Testing from a laptop can produce a false result when the web server sits in another subnet.
Install or verify the PDO_MYSQL driver
The extension must be loaded by the PHP runtime that serves the application. A command-line check is a first indication:
php -m | grep -i pdo_mysql
If no module appears, install or enable the distribution’s PDO MySQL package, restart the PHP process manager or web server, and run the check again. Shared hosting commonly exposes extensions through its PHP-version or module selector. If the command line shows the driver but the application reports that the driver is missing, compare phpinfo() output from the web runtime with the command-line version; they may use different PHP installations or configuration files.
Build a basic PDO connection
The DSN uses the mysql: prefix followed by semicolon-separated components. The PDO MySQL documentation defines host, port, dbname, and charset for this purpose.

<?php
declare(strict_types=1);
$dsn = 'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4';
$options = [
PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
];
$pdo = new PDO(
$dsn,
getenv('DB_USER'),
getenv('DB_PASSWORD'),
$options
);
What each DSN component does
| Component | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
mysql: |
Selects PDO’s MySQL driver. | mysql: |
host |
Names the remote database server. Use its DNS name or IP, not localhost for a remote service. |
host=db.example.com |
port |
Selects the MySQL TCP listening port. | port=3306 |
dbname |
Selects the default database after login. | dbname=app |
charset |
Requests the connection character set. | charset=utf8mb4 |
Why these PDO options matter
PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTIONmakes connection and query failures throwPDOExceptioninstead of silently returning an error value.PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOCreturns rows as associative arrays, avoiding duplicate numeric and named keys.PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => falserequests native prepared statements from MySQL when supported. Bind values rather than concatenating them into SQL.
The constructor receives the DSN first, followed by the username, password, and options. Keep the password out of source control and out of exception messages. Environment variables or a secret manager can inject DB_USER and DB_PASSWORD at deployment time.
Handle errors without leaking secrets
Wrap connection creation at an application boundary where the failure can be logged and converted into a generic response:
try {
$pdo = new PDO($dsn, getenv('DB_USER'), getenv('DB_PASSWORD'), $options);
} catch (PDOException $e) {
error_log('Database connection failed: ' . $e->getMessage());
http_response_code(500);
exit('The application database is temporarily unavailable.');
}
Restrict the log to administrators because some database errors contain host names, account names, or connection details. Never print the password, DSN, environment dump, or a complete exception to an unauthenticated page.
Configure MySQL and the network for remote access
Make the server listen on a reachable interface
MySQL’s bind_address setting determines which local addresses accept TCP/IP traffic. A value that binds only to loopback permits local programs but rejects remote PHP hosts. Bind to the private interface or another deliberately chosen address, then restart or reload MySQL according to the server’s operating procedure. Avoid exposing a database listener directly to the public internet when a private network or tunnel is available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Allow the connection through every control point
The packet must pass the database host firewall, cloud security group, network ACLs, and any intermediate firewall. Permit the database port only from the PHP server’s private address or subnet. A broad “anywhere” rule may make a test pass but creates unnecessary exposure and should not be a production fix.
Match MySQL host permissions to the source address
MySQL distinguishes accounts by both user name and host. An account named app_user permitted from one address is different from the same name permitted from another. Confirm that the account’s host pattern covers the address the database actually sees, especially when NAT, containers, or a load balancer changes the source. Grant only the required database and operations; do not use an administrative account for web requests.

Test DNS and TCP before debugging PHP
Run these checks on the PHP server or in the same runtime environment as the application:
- Resolve the endpoint with the system’s DNS tool, for example
getent hosts db.example.com. If it fails, correct the hostname, private DNS zone, resolver, or network attachment. - Test the port with a TCP utility such as
nc -vz db.example.com 3306. A timeout usually means routing or filtering; an immediate refusal usually means nothing is listening on that address and port or a firewall is actively rejecting it. - Only after DNS and TCP succeed, run the PHP script. A PHP-level authentication error then points to account, password, database, or authentication-plugin settings rather than basic connectivity.
These utilities are diagnostics, not substitutes for TLS or account controls. Remove temporary broad firewall rules after testing.

Use TLS on untrusted networks
Credentials, SQL statements, and result sets travel over the connection. Use TLS whenever the path crosses a network you do not fully trust. AWS states: “Only use an unencrypted MySQL connection when the client and server are in the same VPC and the network is trusted.” A private address alone does not prove that every segment is trusted.
PDO MySQL TLS options
PDO_MYSQL exposes attributes for a CA file, client certificate, client key, cipher selection, and server-certificate verification. A deployment-specific example is:
<?php
$options = [
PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION,
PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,
PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES => false,
PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_SSL_CA => '/path/to/ca.pem',
PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_SSL_VERIFY_SERVER_CERT => true,
];
$pdo = new PDO(
'mysql:host=db.example.com;port=3306;dbname=app;charset=utf8mb4',
getenv('DB_USER'),
getenv('DB_PASSWORD'),
$options
);
Use the CA bundle issued for the database service and keep it readable by the PHP process without making it writable by the application. Certificate verification checks that the server presents a certificate chaining to the trusted CA; disabling verification hides a configuration problem and permits impersonation. Check the certificate hostname, CA path, and server clock when TLS fails. Client certificates and keys are required only when the server is configured for mutual TLS.
Run queries safely after connecting
A successful connection does not make string-concatenated SQL safe. Use prepared statements for values and let the account’s permissions limit the damage from a compromised request:

Could not resolve host
The PHP host cannot translate the name into an address. Check spelling, private DNS visibility, resolver settings, and whether the endpoint is available from the server’s network. Test the exact host from the PHP machine, not from a developer workstation.
Connection refused
The address responded but rejected the TCP connection. Check that MySQL is running, the port is correct, bind_address includes the interface, and no host firewall is blocking the port. Confirm that another service is not occupying the configured port.
Connection timed out
A timeout usually indicates a missing route or a silently dropped packet. Inspect cloud security-group rules, network ACLs, subnet routes, host firewalls, VPN or peering status, and the database endpoint’s private or public reachability. Do not “fix” a timeout by opening the port to every source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAccess denied for user
This response means the server was reached but rejected authentication or host authorization. Verify the username, password, and database name; inspect the MySQL account’s permitted host; and check whether the PHP server’s source address changes through NAT or a proxy. Reset the account credential through an administrator rather than placing a new password in code.
Authentication-plugin errors
MySQL 8 commonly uses caching_sha2_password. PHP documents support for this plugin in PHP 7.4.4 and later when the underlying client support is sufficiently current. Check the PHP version and mysqlnd or client library used by the web runtime, then upgrade the client where possible. Avoid weakening the server’s authentication method solely to accommodate an obsolete client.

TLS or certificate errors
Verify the CA file exists and is readable, the certificate hostname matches the endpoint, the server clock is accurate, and the CA is the one issued for that database service. Keep server-certificate verification enabled after correcting the trust configuration. A certificate that is expired, not yet valid, or signed by an untrusted CA will correctly fail.
Connected, but queries fail
Check that dbname selected the intended schema and that the account has the required table, routine, or write privileges. Inspect the SQL error separately from the original connection test. Continue using prepared statements and handle transaction failures explicitly.
PDO or mysqli?
PDO and mysqli are both PHP interfaces to MySQL. PDO is used here because its documented DSN, options array, and exception model make the connection settings explicit and portable across PDO-supported databases. Choose mysqli when an existing codebase or a MySQL-specific API requires it. The choice does not change the network prerequisites: both clients need a reachable endpoint, an allowed port, valid MySQL account host permissions, and compatible TLS and authentication settings.
Self-managed MySQL versus a managed endpoint
The connection code is similar, but operational responsibility differs. A managed service such as Amazon RDS supplies an endpoint, port, security-group model, and TLS guidance. A self-managed server requires the team to configure and maintain those controls.
| Concern | Self-managed MySQL | Managed service endpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint and port | You choose the address and configure the listener. | The service supplies an endpoint and port. |
| Network exposure | You configure host firewalls, routes, and perimeter controls. | You configure service security groups and network rules around the supplied endpoint. |
| TLS | You obtain, install, renew, and trust certificates. | The provider supplies certificate guidance; the client still must use the correct CA and verify the server. |
| Backups and maintenance | Your team schedules backups, upgrades, monitoring, and recovery tests. | The provider offers managed features, but you must select settings and verify that recovery meets your requirements. |
| Credential rotation | You design the rotation process and secret storage. | You still rotate application credentials and update the deployed secret; the service does not remove that responsibility. |
| Latency | Depends on the location and network you operate. | Depends on the selected service region, network path, and PHP host location. |
For either model, keep the PHP host and database close enough for the application’s latency requirements, restrict ingress to known application networks, and monitor failed connections.
Production hardening checklist
- Use a DNS endpoint that can be changed during failover instead of hard-coding a transient IP when the service provides stable naming.
- Store credentials in environment variables or a secret manager, with access limited to the PHP process.
- Use a separate application account with the smallest practical schema and operation privileges.
- Restrict database ingress to the PHP server’s private address or subnet.
- Require TLS across untrusted networks and verify the server certificate with the correct CA.
- Keep PHP, mysqlnd, and the MySQL server current enough to support the configured authentication plugin.
- Set PDO to throw exceptions, but return generic errors to users and keep detailed diagnostics in protected logs.
- Use native prepared statements and bind values rather than concatenating request data into SQL.
- Test DNS, TCP reachability, login, and a representative query after every network, certificate, credential, or database change.
- Document the endpoint, port, account host restriction, CA rotation process, and recovery owner so a failure is diagnosable without exposing secrets.

$healthy = false;
}

}
For a TLS deployment, add the CA and verification attributes to the same options array. For a real request, replace the health check with a prepared statement that performs the application’s required operation and handle transaction boundaries according to that operation.
