To join a custom Minecraft Bedrock server on Nintendo Switch, change the console’s DNS to the BedrockConnect service, open a featured server from Minecraft’s Servers tab, and enter the server address and port on the BedrockConnect screen. Switch Minecraft does not provide the normal “Add Server” address field found on other Bedrock platforms, so this DNS-based route is the practical workaround. It also works on Switch 2, although some menu labels differ.
What you need before you start
Check these requirements first. The workaround cannot make an incompatible or offline server joinable.
- A Bedrock server: The server must accept Minecraft Bedrock connections and be online. A Java Edition server is not directly compatible. Switch players can join a Java server only when its owner operates a compatibility layer such as Geyser.
- Nintendo Switch Online: Online multiplayer on Switch requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- A Microsoft account: Sign in to that account inside Minecraft before attempting to join an online server.
- A current regular release of Minecraft: BedrockConnect is intended for standard releases. Preview or beta builds are not expected to work with the service.
- The server address and port: Ask the server owner for both values. The usual Bedrock port is
19132over UDP, but a privately hosted server may use another port. - An internet connection on the Switch: You will temporarily change DNS settings for the Wi-Fi network used by the console.
Why the DNS workaround is necessary
Minecraft on Switch includes featured servers, but its console interface does not expose a field where you can type an arbitrary Bedrock server address. BedrockConnect works around that limitation by redirecting the featured-server connection to a menu where you can enter a custom address and port.
This is a third-party DNS service rather than a Nintendo or Mojang feature. The method therefore depends on the service being reachable and compatible with your installed Minecraft release. It can stop working without notice if the service changes or is unavailable.

Step 1: Change the Switch DNS settings
Apply the DNS change to the network that your Switch currently uses. If you connect through a different Wi-Fi network later, repeat the setup for that network.
- From the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet, then Internet Settings.
- Choose the Wi-Fi network you want to use. If the network is not saved, connect to it first.
- Select Change Settings.
- Open DNS Settings and change the value from Automatic to Manual.
- Set Primary DNS to
104.238.130.180. - Set Secondary DNS to
8.8.8.8. Some BedrockConnect guides use1.1.1.1instead; either is an alternative secondary resolver, so enter one secondary address rather than both. - Save the settings and allow the Switch to test the connection.
The primary address is the part that routes the featured-server request to BedrockConnect. The secondary value provides a normal DNS resolver if the primary lookup does not answer. A successful connection test does not guarantee that BedrockConnect itself is available; it only confirms that the Switch can reach the network under the saved settings.

On Switch 2, the same DNS values and sequence are used. Depending on the system software, the network area may use labels such as Settings and Saved Networks instead of the exact original Switch wording. Open the saved Wi-Fi network, choose its change or edit option, and set DNS to manual before entering the two addresses.

Step 2: Open BedrockConnect from Minecraft
- Launch Minecraft and confirm that you are signed in to your Microsoft account.
- Select Play from the main menu.
- Open the Servers tab.
- Select any one of the listed featured servers. You are using it as the entry point; you are not trying to play on that server.
- When the DNS redirect works, a BedrockConnect screen appears instead of the normal featured-server session.
- Choose Connect to a Server.
If Minecraft takes you into the featured server normally, the redirect did not occur. Check that the primary DNS was entered exactly, that the Switch is using the network whose settings you changed, and that the BedrockConnect service is currently responding. Do not repeatedly change Minecraft account settings when the problem is still at the DNS stage.
Step 3: Enter the custom server
- In the BedrockConnect form, enter the server’s hostname or IP address in the address field.
- Enter the port supplied by the server owner. Use
19132only when the owner has not specified a different Bedrock port and the server is configured to use the standard port. - If you want BedrockConnect to remember the destination, enable Add to Server List. This option affects the BedrockConnect list; it does not add a native server-entry field to Nintendo’s Minecraft interface.
- Select Submit.
- Wait for the connection attempt. If the server accepts the request, its world-loading screen appears and you can play as you would on any other online Bedrock world.
Enter the address exactly as provided. Do not add a protocol prefix such as https://, and do not substitute a Java port for the Bedrock port. If the owner gives you a hostname and a nonstandard port, preserve both pieces of information.
How to tell whether the server is compatible
Native Bedrock servers
A native Bedrock server is the straightforward case. It must be running when you submit the address, allow new players, and support the Minecraft version installed on your Switch. The server owner can tell you whether maintenance, a whitelist, or a player cap is preventing entry.

Java servers using Geyser
A Java server cannot be reached by a Switch client merely by entering its Java address. It needs a Bedrock compatibility service such as Geyser, and the owner must provide the Bedrock-facing address and port. Ask for the connection details intended for Bedrock players, not only the Java server’s usual endpoint.
Preview and beta clients
Use the regular Minecraft release for this procedure. BedrockConnect is not expected to support preview or beta builds, so a preview client can fail even when the DNS values, address, and port are correct. If you opted into a test program, return to the standard release before diagnosing the server itself.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No BedrockConnect screen appears
- Reopen System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings and verify that the network in use has manual DNS enabled.
- Confirm that Primary DNS is
104.238.130.180, with no transposed digits or extra spaces. - Confirm that the Switch is connected to the same saved network whose DNS you edited.
- Close Minecraft completely, reopen it, and try a featured server again.
- Check whether the DNS service is reachable at the time you are testing. Because it is operated by a third party, an outage can prevent the redirect even when your console settings are correct.
The featured server opens normally
This usually means the DNS request was not redirected. Recheck the primary DNS first; changing only the secondary value will not correct a mistyped primary address. If other devices use the same router, test the Switch on another network when possible. A network-level DNS filter or captive-portal login can also interfere with the redirect, so complete any hotel, school, or public Wi-Fi sign-in before trying again.

BedrockConnect opens, but submission fails
- Ask the owner to confirm the address character by character.
- Verify the port. The standard is
19132UDP, but many hosted or forwarded servers use a different value. - Check that the server is online and accepting Bedrock players at that moment.
- Confirm that your Switch client and the server support compatible Minecraft versions.
- If the destination is a Java server, verify that Geyser is installed and that you are using the Bedrock endpoint rather than the Java-only endpoint.
You connect, then disconnect or see an authentication error
Confirm that Nintendo Switch Online is active and that Minecraft shows the correct signed-in Microsoft account. The server may also require an allow-list entry, a separate account registration, or a specific client version; only the server operator can change those requirements. If other players can join while you cannot, ask the operator whether your account is blocked or whether the server has reached its player limit.

Test the server’s status with its owner first. Then test the BedrockConnect redirect using a featured server. A failure at the redirect stage points to DNS-service availability or a network setting; a successful redirect followed by a failed custom connection points to the destination address, port, server status, or version compatibility.

- Open System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings.
- Select the saved network, then Change Settings.
- Open DNS Settings.
- Change Manual back to Automatic.
- Save the settings and run the connection test.
Returning DNS to automatic removes the BedrockConnect redirect. You can switch it back to manual later when you need to join a custom server again.
Joining a friend’s server from the Friends tab
There is no confirmed, generally supported method in this setup for entering an arbitrary server address directly through Minecraft’s Friends list on Switch. The reliable documented route is to open BedrockConnect from the Servers tab and submit the destination there. Whether a friend’s world appears in your Friends list depends on how that world is hosted and on Nintendo and Microsoft account permissions; it is separate from adding a dedicated server address.

Important limitations and security considerations
- Service dependency: The DNS route relies on BedrockConnect availability. Nintendo does not provide a service-level guarantee for it.
- Network-specific settings: DNS values are saved per network profile. A new router, hotspot, or venue Wi-Fi needs its own configuration.
- Version sensitivity: Minecraft updates can change featured-server behavior or compatibility. Keep the client on a regular supported release and check with the server owner after an update.
- Server trust: DNS redirection only helps you reach the address you submit. It does not verify that a server is safe, fair, or well moderated. Join only servers you trust and follow their rules.
- Port accuracy: Bedrock normally uses UDP, and entering a Java TCP endpoint or the wrong forwarded port will fail even when the hostname resolves.
