The Xbox Nano Controller connects to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles through Xbox Wireless. On a Windows 10 or 11 PC, Android phone, or iPhone, use Bluetooth: turn on the controller, hold its Pair button for about three seconds until the Xbox button flashes, then select it in the device’s Bluetooth menu. A USB-C cable is required to recharge the internal battery and is sold separately; it is also needed for button mapping in the Xbox Accessories app on Windows.

Microsoft lists support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android, iOS, and compatible Smart TVs. Bluetooth behavior and available features can vary by device, operating-system version, and game.

What you need before pairing

Have the controller, the target device, and enough battery power ready before starting. The Nano has an internal rechargeable battery, so it does not use replaceable AA cells. Microsoft says a USB-C charging cable is required and sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For an Xbox console: an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One with its console Pair button accessible.
  • For a Windows PC: Windows 10 or Windows 11 with Bluetooth enabled, or compatible hardware that supports Xbox Wireless. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app also requires a compatible USB-C cable for the Windows connection used for button mapping.
  • For Android or iPhone: Bluetooth enabled in the phone’s settings and a game or cloud-gaming app that accepts controller input.
  • For every method: keep the controller close to the device during discovery and make sure it is not being claimed by another nearby device.

The controller’s Xbox button indicates pairing status. During discovery it flashes; after a successful connection, it becomes steady.

Connection methods at a glance

Target Wireless protocol Basic procedure USB-C role
Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One Xbox Wireless Press Pair on the console, then hold Pair on the controller until the light is steady. Charges the internal battery; not the normal console-pairing method.
Windows 10/11 PC Bluetooth, or Xbox Wireless with compatible PC hardware Hold the controller’s Pair button, then use Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device. Required for charging and for the Windows Xbox Accessories app’s button-mapping connection.
Android phone Bluetooth Enable Bluetooth, put the controller in pairing mode, and select it in the available-device list. Charges the controller; wireless gameplay uses Bluetooth.
iPhone Bluetooth Enable Bluetooth, put the controller in pairing mode, and tap it in the device list. Charges the controller; wireless gameplay uses Bluetooth.
Compatible Smart TV Bluetooth Use the television’s Bluetooth accessory menu, then select the flashing controller. Charges the controller; the TV app must support gamepads.

Which connection should you choose?

Use Xbox Wireless when the target is an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. It is the console protocol identified by Microsoft for the Nano, so the console’s Pair button and the controller’s Pair button are used together.

Bluetooth is the practical default for a Windows laptop, tablet, Android phone, or iPhone because those devices are listed for Bluetooth support. A Windows desktop can also use Xbox Wireless, but only if it has compatible Xbox Wireless hardware. That is a hardware-dependent alternative, not a universal replacement for Bluetooth.

USB-C is a power and app-management connection, not the ordinary wireless pairing method. You need it to recharge the internal battery and for the Windows Xbox Accessories app’s button-mapping connection. For normal play on a phone or Bluetooth-equipped PC, pair wirelessly instead.

Connect the Nano to an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One

Xbox consoles use Xbox Wireless rather than the phone-style Bluetooth flow. Pair the console and controller in sequence so both are listening at the same time.

  1. Turn on the Xbox console.
  2. Press the Pair button on the console. Its location varies by console model, but it is the dedicated wireless-pairing control.
  3. Turn on the Nano by pressing its Xbox button.
  4. Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button begins flashing.
  5. Wait while the console discovers the controller. Release the button once the Xbox light becomes steady and the controller is connected.

If the light continues flashing, pairing has not completed. Keep the controller near the console and repeat the console-then-controller sequence. A low battery can also prevent a reliable attempt, so recharge it with USB-C before retrying.

Console pairing pitfalls

  • Do not start by holding the controller’s Pair button while the console is off; the console must be turned on and placed in pairing mode first.
  • A steady light means the controller has finished the discovery process. A flashing light means it is still searching.
  • If another Xbox or compatible device is nearby, temporarily move the Nano close to the intended console and remove stale pairings from devices you are not using.

Connect to a Windows 10 or 11 PC

Bluetooth pairing

Bluetooth is the simplest PC method when the computer has working Bluetooth hardware. Microsoft’s documented Xbox-controller flow is:

  1. Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
  2. Hold Pair for about three seconds. The Xbox button flashes when the controller is discoverable.
  3. On the PC, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Turn Bluetooth on if it is disabled.
  5. Select Add device, choose Bluetooth, and select the Nano Controller when it appears.
  6. Wait for Windows to report that the controller is connected, then open a controller-compatible game.

If Windows does not show the controller, leave the Add device screen open, move the controller closer, and hold Pair again until the Xbox button flashes. An old or incomplete controller entry can also interfere with discovery; remove that entry from the Bluetooth device list and start the procedure again.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Xbox Wireless on PC

Microsoft also lists Xbox Wireless as a PC connection option when compatible hardware is available. This is distinct from ordinary Bluetooth: the computer must have hardware that supports Xbox Wireless. If it does not, use Bluetooth instead. Published specifications do not establish a universal Xbox Wireless requirement or adapter for every PC, so check the computer’s hardware documentation before choosing this route.

Use the Xbox Accessories app

Button mapping is available through the Xbox Accessories app on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11. For the Windows app, Microsoft says a compatible USB-C cable is required. Connect the controller with that cable when the app asks for a wired connection, open the controller in the app, and apply the available mapping controls. The cable requirement for the app should not be confused with Bluetooth gameplay: once the controller is paired wirelessly, compatible games can use Bluetooth without a cable.

The app is useful when you need the mapping controls listed by Microsoft, but it is not required merely to discover the controller in Windows. Pair first through Bluetooth; connect the cable only when the app or a mapping task requires it.

Pair with an Android phone

  1. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and switch Bluetooth on.
  2. Press the Nano’s Xbox button to turn it on.
  3. Hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds, until the Xbox button flashes.
  4. Look in the phone’s available or nearby-device list and tap the controller.
  5. Wait for the phone to show a connected status, then launch a game or supported cloud-gaming app.

The official Nano specifications list Android Bluetooth support. Actual behavior depends on the phone model, Android version, and the app. A phone can show a successful Bluetooth connection even when a particular game does not implement controller input; that is an app-support issue rather than a failed pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android-specific checks

Keep the Bluetooth page open until the controller changes from discoverable to connected. If the phone remembers an older entry with the same controller name, use the phone’s forget or remove control and run discovery again. Pairing status alone does not prove that every button, trigger, or menu function will work in a particular game.

Pair with an iPhone

  1. Open the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings and enable Bluetooth.
  2. Turn on the controller with its Xbox button.
  3. Hold Pair until the Xbox button flashes.
  4. Tap the controller in the list of available Bluetooth devices.
  5. After the status changes to connected, open a controller-compatible game or supported cloud-gaming app.

Microsoft lists iOS Bluetooth support for the Nano. iOS version, device model, and the individual game determine which buttons and functions are recognized. If the controller appears under Bluetooth but produces no input in a game, verify that the game supports external controllers before changing the pairing.

iPhone connection pitfalls

Do not judge compatibility from the Bluetooth page alone. iOS can complete the wireless connection while an individual game lacks controller support or exposes only some functions. Test with a game or cloud-gaming app that specifically lists controller input, then troubleshoot the pairing only if the controller also fails to connect in iOS settings.

Connect to a compatible Smart TV

Microsoft includes compatible Smart TVs in the Nano’s Bluetooth description, but it does not promise identical support across television models. Turn on Bluetooth in the TV’s accessory or controller menu, put the Nano into pairing mode by holding Pair until the Xbox button flashes, and select the controller when it appears. The TV’s operating system and the app you use must both support gamepad input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the television sees the controller but an app does not respond, check the app’s controller requirements. A successful Bluetooth connection cannot add gamepad support to an app that does not provide it.

Charging and choosing a USB-C cable

The Nano contains an internal rechargeable battery. Microsoft states that a USB-C charging cable is required and sold separately, so the controller may not include the cable you need in the box. Charge it before a first pairing attempt or whenever the Xbox light will not stay on long enough to complete discovery.

A USB-C cable has two separate roles in Microsoft’s documentation:

  • Charging: the cable supplies power to the internal battery.
  • Windows Xbox Accessories: a compatible USB-C cable is required for the Windows app’s button-mapping connection.

Do not assume that every USB-C cable supports data simply because it fits the connector. Microsoft’s charging statement establishes the power requirement, while the app requirement establishes the need for a compatible cable when Windows must communicate with the controller for mapping. Wireless gameplay on a PC or phone still uses Bluetooth unless you are using a supported Xbox Wireless setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check when buying a cable

  • Confirm that the plug fits the controller’s USB-C port.
  • For charging only, a cable that supplies power is the relevant requirement.
  • For Windows button mapping, choose a cable identified as data-capable and compatible with the controller; physical fit alone is not enough.
  • Microsoft’s published information says the cable is sold separately but does not establish a universal cable length, charging speed, or retail price.

Cost and launch context

Xbox Wire’s 2026 launch announcement lists the XBOX Nano Controller at $49.99. That is the published launch price; regional pricing, retailer stock, and later promotions can differ. The same announcement describes the controller as a little over five inches long, 3.5 ounces, and equipped with all 18 standard gameplay inputs.

Budget for a separate USB-C cable because Microsoft says one is required for charging and for the Windows Xbox Accessories button-mapping connection. The published material does not give a separate cable price, so verify the current price and availability with Microsoft or an authorized retailer before purchasing.

Troubleshoot a controller that will not connect

The controller does not appear in Bluetooth discovery

  • Press the Xbox button to turn the controller on.
  • Hold Pair for the full three seconds, and confirm that the Xbox button is flashing rather than steady.
  • Keep the controller close to the PC or phone while the list refreshes.
  • Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the target device.
  • Remove an old Nano or Xbox-controller entry from the Bluetooth list, then retry discovery.
  • Recharge with USB-C and repeat the process if the controller powers off during pairing.

The Xbox light keeps flashing

A flashing light means the controller is still searching. On an Xbox console, press the console’s Pair button first, then put the controller into pairing mode. On a PC or phone, leave the Bluetooth add-device screen open while the controller is flashing. If no connection is made, cancel the attempt, move closer, remove any stale device entry, and start over.

It paired but the game does not respond

Bluetooth pairing and game support are separate. Test a game or cloud-gaming app that explicitly accepts controller input. Microsoft’s compatibility statement does not guarantee controller functionality in every app. On Xbox or Windows, open the Xbox Accessories app when you need available device-management or button-mapping options.

Windows cannot use the Xbox Accessories app

For the Windows version of the app, connect the controller with a compatible USB-C cable as Microsoft requires. A cable that only supplies power may not provide the data connection the app needs. If the app still does not detect the controller, verify that Windows recognizes the wired device, close and reopen the app, and check that the controller has sufficient charge.

The connection drops repeatedly

  • Recharge the internal battery.
  • Keep the controller within normal Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless range and avoid unnecessary distance during setup.
  • Disconnect or remove stale pairings on the target device before creating a fresh connection.
  • Check whether the problem occurs only in one game; that points to the game’s controller support rather than the wireless link.

No Nano-specific firmware-recovery procedure is established in the published material, so do not apply an undocumented update sequence. Use the documented pairing flow and the Xbox Accessories app’s supported management features.

Compatibility and feature limits

The official product information lists the following broad compatibility: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android, iOS, and compatible Smart TVs. “Compatible” does not mean every device in those categories has identical behavior. Microsoft cautions that Bluetooth and mobile support applies to select devices and versions, and that some functionality may not be supported.

  • Console protocol: Xbox consoles use Xbox Wireless.
  • PC and mobile protocol: Bluetooth is the documented wireless method for Windows 10/11 PCs, tablets, Android, and iOS; Xbox Wireless is an additional PC option only where compatible hardware exists.
  • App behavior: Xbox Accessories button mapping is listed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11.
  • Game behavior: the game or cloud-gaming service must support controller input; the operating system’s Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee it.
  • Smart TVs: Microsoft names compatible Smart TVs, but the available features depend on the television model, operating system, and supported app.

Why is the Xbox button still flashing?

Flashing means the controller is still searching. Keep it close, make sure the console or Bluetooth device is actively in pairing mode, remove stale device entries, and repeat the sequence. Recharge if it powers off during discovery.

Why does Bluetooth say connected when my game does nothing?

The operating system connection and in-game support are separate. Confirm that the game or cloud-gaming service accepts external controller input; not every app supports every controller function.
