Use Xbox Wireless to pair the Xbox Nano controller with an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, pair it through Bluetooth, or use Windows’ separate Xbox Wireless setup when that radio is available. The controller charges through a USB-C cable, which is sold separately; charging is not the same as pairing.

Connection methods at a glance

The Nano controller uses different pairing controls depending on the host. An Xbox console starts pairing from its own pair/sync control, while Windows starts from Bluetooth & devices or the Xbox Wireless device category.

Host Connection method Radio Where pairing starts
Xbox Series X|S Wireless console pairing Xbox Wireless The console’s pair/sync control and the controller’s Pair button
Xbox One Wireless console pairing Xbox Wireless The console’s pair/sync control and the controller’s Pair button
Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC Standard wireless pairing Bluetooth Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device
Windows PC with Xbox Wireless support Xbox Wireless pairing Xbox Wireless Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Everything else

The Xbox specification also lists the controller as compatible with Xbox on PC, Windows, Android, iOS and compatible smart TVs. The procedures below concentrate on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs because those are the pairing questions this guide addresses.

Identify the host you are pairing

Decide whether you are connecting to an Xbox console, using Bluetooth on Windows, or using Xbox Wireless on Windows. These are separate pairing flows. Following the Xbox-console sequence while Windows is waiting for a Bluetooth device, for example, will not complete the connection.

Give the controller enough charge

The Nano has an internal rechargeable battery. If the controller will not power on or the Xbox button stops flashing during setup, charge it before trying again. Charging requires a USB-C cable, and the cable is sold separately. The specification does not describe the charging cable as a required pairing cable, so do not treat plugging in USB-C as a substitute for pressing Pair.

Keep the controller close

Place the controller near the console or PC while adding it. Microsoft’s device-setup guidance specifically advises keeping a wireless device close to the computer, powered on and in pairing mode when it is being added manually. Proximity removes an avoidable variable when the device list is being refreshed.

Check the Windows version

Bluetooth pairing is documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft states that Bluetooth controller pairing requires Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later. Windows 11 meets that version requirement; on Windows 10, install the Anniversary Update or a later release before troubleshooting the controller itself.

Connect the Xbox Nano controller to an Xbox console

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles connect to the Nano through Xbox Wireless. You pair the console and controller by putting both devices into their wireless pairing states.

Pairing steps

  1. Turn on the Xbox console and wait until its home screen is available.
  2. Press the Xbox button on the Nano controller. This powers on the controller.
  3. Press the console’s pair or sync control. The exact physical location of that control differs between console models, but the action is the same: start the console’s wireless pairing window.
  4. Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button begins flashing. A flashing Xbox button indicates that the controller is searching for a host.
  5. Wait for the Xbox button to remain steadily lit. That steady light indicates that pairing has completed.

If the console does not complete pairing

Keep the controller close to the console, make sure the controller has charge, and repeat the sequence from the beginning. The console must be placed in pairing mode before the controller’s Pair button is used; otherwise the controller may continue flashing without finding the console.

Press the console’s pair/sync control again if the pairing window has timed out, then hold the controller’s Pair button until its Xbox button flashes. Do not move on until the controller is visibly in that flashing state. When the light becomes steady, the wireless link is ready for use.

How to interpret the Xbox button

  • Not lit: the controller is not powered on. Press Xbox and, if nothing happens, charge the internal battery.
  • Flashing: the controller is in the pairing process. The console’s pair/sync control must also have been activated.
  • Steady: the wireless pairing has completed.

These light states describe the pairing sequence; they do not indicate how much battery remains.

Pair the controller with Windows over Bluetooth

Bluetooth is the standard wireless route described for Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. The pairing is started on the controller and completed in Windows Settings.

Step-by-step Bluetooth setup

  1. Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
  2. Press and hold the controller’s Pair button for three seconds. The Xbox button lights up and starts flashing.
  3. On the PC, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  4. Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
  5. Select Add device.
  6. If Windows asks which type of device to add, choose Bluetooth.
  7. Select the Xbox controller when it appears in the device list.

When Windows finishes pairing, the controller’s Xbox button remains lit. At that point, close the Settings window and test the controller in the game or app you intend to use.

If the controller is not listed

Keep the Nano close to the PC, confirm that it is powered on, and hold Pair again until the Xbox button is flashing. Then return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device and run the Bluetooth search again. Microsoft’s guidance for devices that are not detected automatically is to use this manual Add device flow while the device is nearby, powered on and in pairing mode.

Windows version boundary

The documented Bluetooth procedure applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, with Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later required. Earlier Windows 10 builds are outside that stated requirement, so update Windows before treating a failed discovery attempt as a controller fault.

Connect to a Windows PC with Xbox Wireless

Microsoft also documents an Xbox Wireless path for Windows. This is distinct from the Bluetooth menu even though both are wireless connections. Use the Xbox Wireless sequence when your PC presents Xbox Wireless support and you want to add the controller through that device category.

Xbox Wireless pairing steps

  1. Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
  2. Hold the Xbox button until it starts flashing.
  3. Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox button flashes more quickly. The faster flashing is the indication to continue with Xbox Wireless setup.
  4. On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device.
  5. Choose Everything else, not the ordinary Bluetooth category.
  6. Select Xbox Wireless Controller from the results.

Wait for the Xbox button to stop its pairing flash and remain lit. If Windows does not show Xbox Wireless Controller, return the controller to its faster-flashing state and run the same Add device path again.

Do not mix the two Windows paths

Bluetooth discovery and Xbox Wireless discovery use different choices in the Add device dialog. For Bluetooth, choose Bluetooth and select the Xbox controller. For Xbox Wireless, choose Everything else and select Xbox Wireless Controller. Choosing the wrong category can make a correctly powered controller appear to be missing.

What cable does the Xbox Nano controller use?

The controller has an internal rechargeable battery and requires a USB-C cable for charging. Xbox specifies that the cable is sold separately. The cable requirement is for replenishing the battery; the official connection specifications identify Xbox Wireless for Xbox consoles and Bluetooth for Windows PCs.

Choosing a replacement cable

Look for a cable with a USB-C connector that matches the port on the controller. Check three details before buying:

  • Connector: the controller end must be USB-C.
  • Charging capability: the listing should explicitly support charging rather than describing a cable intended only for a different purpose.
  • Length: choose a length that reaches your charging position without putting tension on the controller or the USB connection.

The phrase “USB-C charging cable for Xbox Nano Controller” can help narrow a search, but verify the connector, charging capability and length in the actual listing. A USB-C cable does not eliminate the need to place the controller into the correct wireless pairing mode.

Charging versus connecting

There are two separate actions: charging the internal battery and pairing the wireless radio. Plugging in a USB-C cable addresses the first. Pressing Xbox and holding Pair addresses the second. If a charged controller is not visible to Xbox or Windows, repeat the appropriate wireless procedure instead of assuming the cable has paired it.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The controller will not turn on

Press Xbox once. If the button does not light, charge the internal battery with a USB-C cable. Because the cable is sold separately, make sure you actually have a suitable charging cable connected to the controller. Once the Xbox button lights, return to the pairing steps for your host.

The Xbox button flashes continuously on an Xbox

A flashing button means the controller is still searching. Press the console’s pair/sync control, then hold the controller’s Pair button until it flashes and wait for the light to become steady. Move closer to the console and repeat if the light never settles.

Windows cannot find the controller over Bluetooth

Confirm Bluetooth is turned on at Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Keep the controller near the PC, press Xbox, hold Pair for three seconds until the button flashes, and use Add device > Bluetooth. If the flashing stopped, put the controller back into pairing mode before searching again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows cannot find Xbox Wireless Controller

Use the Xbox Wireless sequence rather than the Bluetooth sequence: hold Xbox until it flashes, hold Pair until the flashing becomes faster, then choose Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Everything else. Select Xbox Wireless Controller. If it still does not appear, keep the controller close, ensure it remains powered on and in the faster-flashing state, and repeat Add device.

The controller appears but does not finish connecting

Leave the controller close to the host, charge it, and restart the relevant pairing sequence. On Xbox, activate the console’s pair/sync control before holding Pair. On Windows, open the correct Add device category while the controller is actively flashing. These checks align the host’s discovery window with the controller’s pairing window.

The Xbox button remains lit but the game does not respond

A steady Xbox button confirms that the wireless pairing completed; it does not by itself identify which game or app is receiving input. Verify that you selected the controller shown by Windows or paired it with the intended Xbox console. If you are still in Settings, close the pairing dialog and test the controller in the target software.

Compatibility boundaries to keep in mind

The official specification lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox on PC, Windows, Android and iOS as compatible platforms. For this guide’s Windows procedures, the stated Bluetooth requirement is Windows 10 Anniversary Update or later, including Windows 11. Xbox-console pairing uses Xbox Wireless, while the Windows specification identifies Bluetooth for wireless PC connections. Those radio assignments determine which pairing screen and button sequence to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you change from an Xbox console to a Windows PC, do not assume that a USB-C charging connection will transfer the pairing. Turn the controller on and run the complete pairing sequence for the new host. Likewise, selecting Bluetooth on Windows will not start the Xbox-console Xbox Wireless process; each host must be added through its own controls.
