To connect the PD5, put your Bluetooth headphones or speaker into pairing mode, turn on Bluetooth in the PD5’s settings, choose the receiver from the available-device list, and wait for a connected status before playing music. The PD5 supports Bluetooth 5.3, A2DP and AVRCP, plus aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC. The codec used is negotiated between the PD5 and your receiver, so the list of codecs on the player does not guarantee that every headphone or speaker will use every format.

What you need before pairing

Have the Astell & Kern PD5 charged or connected to power, and keep the headphones or speaker within a few metres while pairing. Bluetooth pairing is a short-range radio connection; distance, walls and nearby wireless devices can make discovery less reliable.

  • PD5: Bluetooth must be enabled in its settings.
  • Headphones or speaker: The receiver must be in its discoverable or pairing mode, not merely switched on.
  • Receiver status: If it is already connected to a phone, tablet or computer, disconnect it or clear that active connection first. Many products stop advertising themselves to new devices while an existing connection is active.
  • Receiver instructions: Pairing controls differ. Some products use a dedicated Bluetooth button; others require holding the power or multifunction button for several seconds. Use the receiver’s own instructions for the exact button sequence.

The PD5 can send music to a Bluetooth receiver such as headphones or a speaker. That is different from its advertised BT Sink function, which allows another device to send audio into the PD5. BT Sink is not the setting you need when the PD5 is the source and your headphones or speaker are the destination.

Pair the PD5 with Bluetooth headphones or a speaker

The readable Astell & Kern support listing confirms that a PD5 user manual is available, but it does not expose the manual’s screen-by-screen text. The sequence below therefore describes the required actions without pretending to reproduce unverified menu labels. Your firmware may use slightly different wording.

1. Put the headphones or speaker into pairing mode

  1. Turn on the headphones or speaker.
  2. Activate its Bluetooth pairing or discoverable mode using the controls specified by that product’s manufacturer.
  3. Look for a flashing indicator, a voice prompt or another sign that it is accepting a new connection. A steady “connected” light usually means it is linked to another device instead.

Leave the receiver in this mode while you operate the PD5. Pairing mode often times out after a short period, so restart it if the player does not find the device promptly.

2. Open Bluetooth settings on the PD5

  1. Wake and unlock the PD5.
  2. Open the player’s settings interface and locate the Bluetooth controls.
  3. Switch Bluetooth on, then open the available-device or device-search view.

The exact screen labels and navigation path are not confirmed by the accessible manual listing, so do not rely on a specific label such as “Scan,” “Add device” or “Available devices” appearing on every firmware version. The important actions are enabling Bluetooth and displaying nearby receivers.

3. Select the receiver

  1. Wait for the headphones’ or speaker’s advertised name to appear in the PD5’s list.
  2. Select that name once. If the receiver asks for confirmation, accept the request on the receiver.
  3. Wait for the PD5 to show a connected or paired state.
  4. Start playback at a moderate volume and raise it gradually.

If several receivers appear, identify yours by its model name or the name you assigned to it in its companion app. Avoid selecting an unfamiliar entry; it may belong to a nearby device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Confirm audio output

Play a track for a few seconds. If the connection is active but you hear nothing, check the receiver’s own volume, make sure it is not muted, and confirm that the PD5 is not simultaneously routing audio to a wired output or another Bluetooth device. Pause and resume playback after changing the output connection.

First-time pairing versus reconnecting

Initial pairing makes the PD5 and receiver exchange identity information. After that, a receiver may reconnect automatically when it is powered on, although the exact behavior depends on the receiver. If it does not reconnect, open the PD5’s Bluetooth device list and select the saved receiver again. Keep the receiver out of pairing mode only after the PD5 shows a connected state.

When you want to change from headphones to a speaker, pause playback first, disconnect or turn off the current receiver, then place the new receiver in pairing mode. This reduces the chance that the PD5 will continue sending audio to the first device. If both names remain saved, select the one you actually want rather than assuming the most recently used device is active.

If the PD5 cannot find your headphones or speaker

Discovery failures are usually caused by the receiver not advertising itself, an existing connection elsewhere or a stale Bluetooth session. Work through these checks in order.

Check pairing mode again

Turn the receiver off, turn it on, and deliberately re-enter pairing mode. A device that is merely powered on may remain invisible because it is waiting to reconnect to a previous host. Keep the receiver close to the PD5 while searching.

Disconnect the receiver from other devices

Temporarily disable Bluetooth on the phone, tablet, laptop or television that normally uses the headphones or speaker. Some receivers support multipoint connections, but others will not appear to a new source until their previous connection is released.

Restart the search

  1. Exit the PD5’s device-search view.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the PD5’s Bluetooth settings.
  3. Put the receiver back into pairing mode.
  4. Open the available-device list again and wait for a fresh scan.

These are general Bluetooth recovery actions rather than screen instructions verified from the exposed PD5 manual. If the PD5 still shows no receiver, restart both products and repeat the process.

Remove a stale pairing

If the receiver appears but will not connect, use the PD5’s Bluetooth device list to forget or remove the old entry, if that option is available, then pair again. Also clear the PD5’s entry from the receiver’s remembered-device list when the receiver provides that control. Re-pairing is useful after a receiver has been reset, renamed or updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rule out a receiver-side fault

  • Try putting the receiver into pairing mode with the PD5’s Bluetooth turned off. Its indicator or voice prompt should still show discoverability.
  • Check whether another Bluetooth source can discover it. If no source can, the issue is probably on the receiver side.
  • Charge the headphones or speaker. Low battery can prevent some products from entering or maintaining pairing mode.
  • Move away from busy wireless areas and large metal objects during the initial connection.

If the name appears but pairing fails

A visible name means the receiver is advertising, but it does not guarantee that the connection will complete. First cancel any pending connection on the receiver, then select the PD5 entry again. If a confirmation prompt or code appears, approve it on the receiver as well as on the PD5. A receiver that has reached its remembered-device limit may also need an old host removed.

Do not repeatedly select the same entry while the first request is still processing. Wait for the status to change, then restart both devices if the request times out. Forgetting the old entry on both sides is more effective than leaving several failed attempts in the lists.

Bluetooth codecs and what they mean on the PD5

Astell & Kern lists Bluetooth 5.3 and the A2DP and AVRCP profiles for the PD5. A2DP carries stereo audio; AVRCP carries playback-control commands such as play, pause or track changes when the receiver supports them.

Codec or profile What the PD5 specification establishes What it does not establish
aptX HD Listed by Astell & Kern as supported by the PD5. Your receiver must also support aptX HD, and the connection may select another common codec.
LDAC Listed as supported by the PD5. LDAC is not guaranteed unless the headphones or speaker support it and the link negotiates it.
LHDC Listed as supported by the PD5. Availability depends on receiver compatibility and the negotiated connection.
SBC Listed as supported and commonly used as a baseline Bluetooth codec. Its presence does not indicate which codec was selected for a particular session.
AAC Listed as supported by the PD5. The receiver and the active Bluetooth stack still determine whether AAC is used.
A2DP Provides the Bluetooth audio transport used for stereo playback. It does not specify a single sound quality or force a particular codec.
AVRCP Provides supported playback and remote-control functions. Every receiver may expose a different subset of controls.

The negotiated codec is a property of both ends of the link. A headset that supports only SBC and AAC cannot use LDAC simply because the PD5 lists LDAC. Conversely, a receiver that supports a high-bandwidth codec may still negotiate a different one because of compatibility, firmware, radio conditions or the receiver’s own settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare a receiver’s codec list

Read the headphone or speaker specification and mark the codecs it shares with the PD5: aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC. Shared support only means the two devices have a possible common mode; it does not tell you which mode will be selected in a particular session. If a receiver offers no codec beyond the common baseline, it can still pair and play normally.

Codec overlap should be one selection factor, not the only one. Also consider whether you can reliably enter and exit pairing mode, whether the receiver reconnects to the intended source, and whether its controls expose the AVRCP functions you use. A simple pairing process is often more useful than a codec name you cannot verify during playback.

Why a high-resolution file is not automatically transmitted losslessly

You can play a high-resolution source file on the PD5 while the Bluetooth link uses a codec that compresses the audio. The file’s sampling rate and bit depth describe the source and the player’s internal processing; they do not prove that the same data reaches the headphones or speaker unchanged. Unless the receiver reports the active codec and the connection mode, do not describe Bluetooth playback as lossless or identical to the source file.

For the same reason, a 24-bit/96kHz track does not by itself prove that the Bluetooth receiver is operating at 24-bit/96kHz. Treat the file format and the wireless transport as separate parts of the playback chain.

Headphones versus a Bluetooth speaker

The pairing process is essentially the same, but the listening decision is different.

Consideration Bluetooth headphones Bluetooth speaker
Best use Private listening, travel and situations where room noise or other people are concerns. Shared listening in a room or outdoors where everyone needs to hear the program.
Pairing behavior Often reconnects automatically to a phone; you may need to disconnect that phone before the PD5 can discover it. May remain discoverable longer, but some speakers also hold an existing phone connection.
Codec choice Check the headphone’s supported-codec list against aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC on the PD5. Check the speaker’s supported-codec list; many speakers offer fewer codec options than premium headphones.
Controls AVRCP buttons may control play, pause or track changes if both devices implement those commands. Speaker controls and volume behavior vary; test them after pairing.
Practical check Confirm both earcups are active and that the headset is not in a call or transparency-only mode. Confirm the speaker is not muted and that its input source is set to Bluetooth.

No particular headphone or speaker model is required by the PD5 specification. Choose a receiver whose pairing process you can use easily and whose codec support overlaps with the modes you want. The PD5’s list alone is not a ranking of receiver quality.

What an independent listening report shows

What Hi-Fi? reported streaming a 24-bit/96kHz FLAC rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” from the PD5 to Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 wireless over-ear headphones. This demonstrates that the reviewer was able to use the PD5 for Bluetooth headphone playback with that combination. It is not a universal compatibility guarantee, a test of every speaker or headphone, or a measurement of the codec negotiated during that session; the report does not identify the active codec.

Understanding the PD5’s BT Sink function

Astell & Kern separately describes BT Sink on the PD5. In this mode, an external source sends audio to the PD5 over Bluetooth. For example, the PD5 could receive audio from another device rather than transmit its own local playback to headphones. That direction is the reverse of the connection described in this guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For headphones or a speaker connected to the PD5, use the player’s normal Bluetooth-output controls. If you select BT Sink while trying to listen through a Bluetooth headset, you may configure the wrong direction and see no audio in the receiver.

Pairing checklist

  • Receiver is powered and in its explicit pairing or discoverable mode.
  • Receiver is not currently connected to another host.
  • PD5 Bluetooth is switched on.
  • Receiver name appears in the PD5’s available-device list.
  • PD5 shows a connected or paired status before playback starts.
  • Receiver volume, mute state and input selection are correct.
  • Codec expectations match the capabilities of both devices.
  • You are using Bluetooth output, not the separate BT Sink direction.

When to consult the manual or support

The official English support listing shows a “PD5 User Manual” dated 10.07.2026 and a PD5_Manual.zip download. Because the accessible listing does not display the PDF’s contents, consult the downloaded manual for the exact menu names on your firmware, reset instructions and any model-specific limits. Firmware updates can also change labels or behavior. If the receiver remains undiscoverable after the checks above, contact Astell & Kern support and the receiver manufacturer with the PD5 firmware version, receiver model and the point at which pairing fails.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing power with pairing: A powered-on receiver is not necessarily discoverable. Enter its explicit pairing mode.
  • Leaving a phone connected: Automatic reconnection can hide the receiver from the PD5 or immediately pull it back to the phone.
  • Choosing BT Sink: BT Sink makes the PD5 a Bluetooth destination, not a source for headphones or speakers.
  • Assuming the best codec: The PD5’s advertised list does not reveal the codec negotiated with your particular receiver.
  • Starting playback too soon: Wait for a connected status, then test with a short track before increasing volume.
  • Trusting an unfamiliar device name: Nearby receivers can appear in the list, so confirm the model name before connecting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the PD5 connect to any Bluetooth headphones?

It can connect to compatible Bluetooth audio receivers using the profiles and codecs supported by both devices. Put the headphones into discoverable mode, enable Bluetooth on the PD5 and select their name. A particular model is not required, but codec support and pairing behavior vary.

How do I connect the PD5 to a Bluetooth speaker?

Use the same process as with headphones: activate pairing mode on the speaker, open Bluetooth settings on the PD5, select the speaker from the available-device list and wait for a connected status. Confirm that the speaker is set to its Bluetooth input and is not connected to another host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why won’t my PD5 find my headphones?

The headphones may only be powered on, may still be connected to a phone or may have left pairing mode. Disconnect other hosts, deliberately re-enter pairing mode, keep the headphones close to the PD5, toggle Bluetooth off and on, and start a fresh device search.

Does the PD5 always use LDAC or aptX HD?

No. Astell & Kern lists aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC, but the receiver must support the same codec and the link must negotiate it. The PD5’s specification alone cannot identify the codec used in a particular session.

What is BT Sink on the PD5?

BT Sink is an incoming-audio mode: another device sends audio to the PD5. It is the reverse of the setup in this guide, where the PD5 sends its playback to Bluetooth headphones or a speaker.

Can a 24-bit/96kHz file remain lossless over Bluetooth?

The file’s resolution does not prove what travels over the wireless link. Bluetooth may use a negotiated codec that compresses the audio. Unless the receiver reports the active codec and mode, do not describe the result as lossless or identical to the source file.

Why is there no sound after the PD5 says it is connected?

Check the receiver’s volume and mute state, select its Bluetooth input if it has multiple inputs, and make sure the PD5 is not routing audio to another output. Pause and resume playback after changing the connection.

Where can I find the exact PD5 menu labels?

Astell & Kern’s English support listing provides a PD5 User Manual and a PD5_Manual.zip archive dated 10.07.2026. Download the manual for the labels and reset details that apply to your firmware, since the listing itself does not show the full screen-by-screen text.

The Bottom Line

Put the headphones or speaker into true pairing mode, enable Bluetooth on the PD5, select the receiver and wait for a connected status. Keep other host devices disconnected, remember that codec use is negotiated by both ends, and use normal Bluetooth output rather than BT Sink when the PD5 is the source.
