Yes—you can connect speakers to an active subwoofer when the equipment provides a compatible signal path. The usual route is an RCA subwoofer output on a receiver, preamp, or powered speaker connected to the subwoofer’s RCA line or LFE input. If the source has no subwoofer line output, a subwoofer with documented high-level inputs may work with an amplifier’s speaker terminals. Check the manuals for both devices before wiring: ports, filters, and setup options vary by model.
Identify the source output and subwoofer input
An active subwoofer contains its own amplifier, but it still needs a suitable signal from the receiver, preamp, amplifier, or powered speaker. Match the source’s output to an input the subwoofer is designed to accept.
- Line-level output: A jack labeled SUB OUT, SUBWOOFER, or LFE usually provides an RCA signal for a subwoofer’s line or LFE input.
- Speaker-level output: Amplified speaker terminals can feed a subwoofer only if that subwoofer has documented high-level inputs and its manual specifies the wiring method.
- Other connection types: Some equipment has other supported inputs or wireless options. Use them only when the manuals for the specific devices confirm compatibility.
Do not assume that a port’s label, an adapter, or a connector that physically fits makes two devices compatible. The manuals identify the intended signal type and any required setup.

Receiver or preamp with a SUB OUT
- With the equipment powered off if its manual instructs you to do so, connect the receiver or preamp’s SUB OUT to the active subwoofer’s RCA line or LFE input using an RCA subwoofer cable.
- If the subwoofer has two RCA inputs, check its manual to find out which input to use; a single connected input is sufficient on some models.
- In the receiver’s setup, enable the subwoofer and configure speaker sizes, crossover, and bass routing according to that receiver’s instructions.
This is a common powered-subwoofer connection, but the correct jack and configuration remain model-specific. See Klipsch’s connection guidance and the relevant receiver manual.

Powered speaker with a subwoofer output
If a powered speaker has a dedicated Sub Out and the subwoofer has a compatible RCA line or LFE input, connect them with one RCA cable. For example, Klipsch specifies this connection for The Fives, while Yamaha’s NX-70A instructions call for a mono RCA cable from the primary speaker’s SUBWOOFER jack to an active subwoofer. Follow the instructions for the exact model:
Filtering varies even among powered speakers with a subwoofer output. Klipsch says The Fives apply an 80 Hz high-pass filter to their speaker output and an 80 Hz low-pass filter to the subwoofer output when connected. In a separate example, SVS says its Prime Wireless Pro applies an 80 Hz active high-pass filter to the speaker output and recommends a 90 Hz subwoofer low-pass setting. Those are product-specific behaviors and settings, not universal targets. See SVS’s Prime Wireless Pro setup instructions.

For a Yamaha NX-70A setup, Yamaha recommends running YPAO after connecting or disconnecting a subwoofer, or adjusting the speaker setup manually in the app.
Amplifier or receiver without a subwoofer line output
A subwoofer with high-level (speaker-level) inputs may accept a signal from an amplifier’s speaker terminals. This can provide a connection option for two-channel systems or equipment without a subwoofer RCA output, but only when the subwoofer’s manual explicitly supports it and gives the wiring instructions. Some subwoofers also have speaker-level pass-through outputs; do not assume yours does.

Yamaha’s NS-SW1000 manual, for example, distinguishes speaker-level INPUT1 from line-level INPUT2 and LFE INPUT3, and describes signal being sent onward to the subwoofer’s speaker outputs. That layout is an example, not a feature to expect on every active subwoofer. See the Yamaha NS-SW1000 manual and Klipsch’s guidance on subwoofer connections.
Set crossover and bass routing for your system
The crossover determines how bass is divided between the main speakers and subwoofer. Depending on the system, the receiver, powered speaker, or subwoofer may handle some or all of this filtering. Check each manual so you know which control is responsible and whether the main speakers are filtered after connection.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- If the receiver handles the crossover: Configure speaker size and crossover in its setup. Klipsch advises turning the subwoofer’s low-pass control fully up when the receiver sets the crossover; confirm this approach in your equipment’s instructions.
- If the subwoofer handles the low-pass filter: Use the speaker and subwoofer manuals to choose a setting that integrates them. Klipsch suggests 80 Hz as a starting point, while SVS specifies 90 Hz for its Prime Wireless Pro example. Neither value is a rule for all systems.
- Check the main speakers’ behavior: Some powered speakers apply a high-pass filter automatically when a subwoofer is connected. Others may not. Do not assume the subwoofer output also changes what the main speakers play.
- Confirm receiver routing: Verify that Subwoofer is enabled and inspect speaker configuration, crossover, and source routing. Yamaha’s RX300A documentation says that, when configured for subwoofer use, the subwoofer receives the LFE channel and bass redirected from other speakers. See Yamaha’s receiver configuration documentation.
Avoid unsafe or mismatched connections
- Do not connect both line/LFE and speaker-wire inputs at once unless the exact subwoofer manual permits it. Klipsch notes that some older models may allow this combination, but it is not recommended for many current models and may damage subwoofer electronics. Check the manufacturer’s instructions or support before trying it.
- Do not connect an amplifier’s speaker terminals to an RCA line input unless the equipment documentation explicitly supports that connection. A speaker-level signal and a line-level input are not interchangeable.
- Follow the manuals’ power-off, polarity, and wiring cautions while making connections, especially when working with speaker terminals.
What to check if the subwoofer does not play
- Confirm that the cable runs from the intended source output to a compatible subwoofer input, and that both ends are fully connected.
- Check that the receiver or powered speaker is configured to use a subwoofer. On an AVR, inspect speaker configuration, crossover, and source routing rather than relying on the cable connection alone.
- Check the subwoofer’s power and input settings, along with any volume or filter controls described in its manual.
- If the main speakers still play full-range, consult their documentation to determine whether they should be high-passed automatically or need a separate setting.
- If the connection uses speaker wire, recheck the subwoofer manual’s high-level wiring diagram and confirm that the model actually has high-level inputs.
- For Yamaha NX-70A systems, run YPAO after adding or removing a subwoofer, or adjust speaker setup in the app as Yamaha directs.
What cable or feature you need
A single RCA subwoofer cable is appropriate when the source has an RCA SUB OUT and the active subwoofer has a compatible RCA line or LFE input. Check the connector type and cable length before buying. If the source lacks a subwoofer line output, an RCA cable will not solve the mismatch; look for a subwoofer with documented high-level inputs and confirm its wiring method instead.
