To connect Sony PULSE Explore wireless earbuds to a PS5, use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter—not a generic Bluetooth dongle. Turn on the console, place both earbuds in their charging case, insert the adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port, and remove both earbuds. Follow the on-screen instructions. The adapter is paired with the earbuds out of the box, and its status indicator turns solid white when the connection succeeds.

What you need for the standard PS5 setup
The normal PS5 connection uses PlayStation Link, Sony’s wireless connection system for supported PlayStation audio devices. The PULSE Explore package includes a PlayStation Link USB adapter that is already paired with the earbuds. For ordinary setup, you do not need to buy another adapter.
- A PS5 that is turned on
- Both PULSE Explore earbuds and their charging case
- The PlayStation Link USB adapter included with the earbuds
- An available USB Type-A port on the PS5
The case is part of the documented procedure because both earbuds must begin inside it before the adapter is connected. Remove both earbuds only when the adapter is in the console.

How to connect PULSE Explore earbuds to a PS5
- Turn on the PS5. Let the console reach its normal home screen so that you can respond to the setup prompts.
- Put both earbuds in the charging case. Keep them docked while you prepare the adapter.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Plug it into one of the PS5’s USB Type-A ports. The adapter is the component that creates the documented PS5 connection; the standard instructions do not use ordinary Bluetooth pairing.
- Remove both earbuds from the case. Taking both out starts their search for the available PlayStation Link connection.
- Complete the on-screen setup. Follow any instructions shown by the PS5 until the connection process finishes.
Sony says the included adapter and earbuds are paired from the factory, so this process is normally a discovery and confirmation step rather than a manual pairing-code procedure. The full US support procedure is available at PlayStation Support.
How to tell whether the connection worked
Look at the status indicator on the PlayStation Link USB adapter. A solid white indicator signals that the adapter has connected successfully to the earbuds. This is the clearest confirmation that PS5 audio can use the PULSE Explore connection.
When the earbuds are removed from the case, they search for an available connection for 30 seconds. That 30-second period is Sony’s stated search window, not a guaranteed total setup time for every console screen or prompt. If the earbuds do not find a connection during that window, Sony says they turn off.
If the earbuds do not connect
Work through the documented retry behavior before changing connection methods. The most common mistake is removing the earbuds before the adapter is inserted, or expecting the PS5 to treat them like a generic Bluetooth headset.

The adapter indicator is not solid white
- Confirm that the included PlayStation Link adapter is fully inserted into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Return both earbuds to the charging case, then remove both again after the adapter is connected.
- Watch the adapter indicator while the earbuds search. Solid white is the success state identified by Sony.
- If the PS5 displays setup instructions, complete those instructions rather than leaving the setup screen unfinished.
These checks preserve the order Sony specifies: console on, earbuds in the case, adapter inserted, then both earbuds removed.
The 30-second search ended
If the earbuds searched for 30 seconds without finding a connection, they turn off. Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to search again. Before retrying, verify that the adapter remains inserted in the console and that both earbuds are out of the case.
The PS5 does not show the expected setup prompt
Check the physical connection first. The documented PS5 procedure requires the PlayStation Link USB adapter in a USB Type-A port. A phone-style Bluetooth pairing screen or a generic wireless USB dongle is not the setup Sony describes for PULSE Explore on PS5. Reinsert the included adapter, place both earbuds back in the case, remove them again, and then follow any prompt that appears.

Sony’s PS5 instructions tell you to place both earbuds in the case and then remove both. Follow that sequence for the supported setup. If you started with one earbud, return both to the case and repeat the complete procedure instead of treating the partial attempt as a separate pairing process.

Why the included USB adapter matters
The PULSE Explore earbuds use PlayStation Link for the documented PS5 connection. The adapter supplied with the earbuds is already paired to them, which is why Sony’s instructions focus on inserting it and then removing the earbuds rather than selecting the earbuds from a conventional Bluetooth device list.
A generic Bluetooth adapter should not be presented as a replacement for the PlayStation Link adapter in this setup. Sony’s PS5 instructions specifically call for the PlayStation Link USB adapter. Bluetooth is documented for compatible mobile devices and other supported scenarios, not as the ordinary PS5 setup path described here.

Using Bluetooth and PlayStation Link together
Bluetooth is relevant when the earbuds also need to communicate with a compatible mobile device. Sony says supported PULSE Explore devices can use PlayStation Link and Bluetooth simultaneously. In practical terms, the earbuds can remain connected to the PS5 through PlayStation Link while handling a Bluetooth connection to a phone; Sony gives receiving a phone call while hearing PS5 audio as an example of this kind of use.

This simultaneous-connection capability does not change the initial PS5 procedure. First establish the PS5 connection with the included PlayStation Link adapter. Treat Bluetooth as an additional connection for a compatible mobile device, not as a substitute for the adapter in Sony’s documented console setup.
Compatibility matters on the Bluetooth side. Sony’s support wording refers to compatible mobile devices and supported PULSE Explore devices, so do not assume that every phone, tablet, computer, or Bluetooth accessory offers the same behavior. Check the relevant device support information before relying on simultaneous audio or call handling.

For one PS5 and one pair of PULSE Explore earbuds, the included adapter is the appropriate starting point. Buying another adapter is not necessary merely to complete the first connection because Sony says the included adapter is already paired with the earbuds.

A practical setup checklist
- PS5 is powered on.
- Both earbuds are initially seated in the charging case.
- The included PlayStation Link USB adapter is available.
- The adapter is inserted into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Both earbuds are removed only after the adapter is inserted.
- The PS5’s on-screen instructions are completed.
- The adapter’s indicator is solid white.
If the connection is not successful, repeat the checklist in this order. When the 30-second search expires, press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to start another search.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“The earbuds should appear in the PS5 Bluetooth menu”
That expectation applies to a conventional Bluetooth pairing workflow, not the documented PULSE Explore PS5 setup. Sony’s instructions use the PlayStation Link USB adapter. Start with the adapter and the case sequence rather than searching for the earbuds as a generic Bluetooth device.
“I need to purchase the adapter separately”
Not for the ordinary setup described by Sony. The adapter included with the PULSE Explore earbuds is already paired to them. A separate adapter is an additional-connection option, not a prerequisite for the first PS5 connection.

The search is time-limited. Sony states that the earbuds search for 30 seconds and turn off if no connection is found. Press the PlayStation Link button on either earbud to search again after confirming that the adapter is inserted.
“Any wireless USB dongle should work”
The documented procedure names the PlayStation Link USB adapter. A generic Bluetooth dongle does not become a PlayStation Link adapter simply because it fits a USB port.
