To use Samsung DeX on a monitor, connect a DeX-compatible Galaxy phone or tablet to the monitor’s HDMI input with a DeX cable, HDMI cable, or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. Unlock the Galaxy device and accept the DeX prompt. Then pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or connect USB peripherals through the device or a compatible multiport adapter.
A cable-free setup is also possible with Wireless DeX on eligible Galaxy models. Wireless DeX requires a compatible Samsung TV, Samsung Smart Monitor, or another display that supports Miracast. The exact phone, tablet, software version, display, and connection mode determine whether the setup works, so check compatibility for your specific model before buying an adapter or hub.
What you need for a Samsung DeX desktop
DeX does not run from the monitor alone. The Galaxy device supplies the DeX software and processing, while the external display provides the desktop view. Prepare these items before connecting anything:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Samsung maintains separate compatibility lists for wired DeX, Wireless DeX, and DeX on PC. Support for one mode does not guarantee support for another.
- An HDMI display. For a wired setup, use a monitor or TV with an available HDMI input. For Wireless DeX, the display must support Samsung’s supported wireless requirements, such as a compatible Samsung TV, Samsung Smart Monitor, or Miracast screen-mirroring device.
- A video connection. A DeX cable or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is the documented wired route. A standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter can start DeX on supported devices.
- A keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth accessories connect directly to the Galaxy device. USB keyboards and mice can use available ports or a suitable multiport adapter.
- Power and network access where appropriate. Wireless DeX performance depends on the network, distance, and compatibility of the devices. Do not assume every wireless setup will behave identically.
If you are buying accessories, confirm the precise Galaxy model and connection mode first. A hub that works with one device may not work with another, and a phone that supports wired DeX may not support Wireless DeX.

Wired DeX or Wireless DeX: which connection should you use?
| Characteristic | Wired DeX over HDMI | Wireless DeX |
|---|---|---|
| Display connection | USB-C from the Galaxy device to an HDMI cable, DeX cable, or USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, then HDMI to the monitor | Wireless connection from the Galaxy device to a compatible TV or monitor |
| Galaxy compatibility | Requires a model on Samsung’s wired cable/HDMI DeX list | Requires a model on Samsung’s Wireless DeX list; the lists are not interchangeable |
| Display compatibility | Any monitor or TV with a suitable HDMI input, subject to adapter and device support | 2018 or later Samsung TVs, Samsung Smart Monitors, or other displays that support Miracast, subject to model support |
| Accessories | DeX cable, HDMI cable, or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter; a hub is optional for extra USB ports | No video cable, but the display must provide supported wireless screen mirroring |
| Best fit | A predictable connection, a conventional monitor, or a setup where a cable is acceptable | A cable-free desk or living-room setup with a compatible wireless display |
| Main limitation | Requires a physical cable and may need an adapter or hub for peripherals | Availability and performance vary with the Galaxy model, display, network, distance, and Miracast compatibility |
Use wired DeX when you need the broadest monitor choice or a direct, accessory-based connection. Choose Wireless DeX only after confirming that both the Galaxy device and display support that mode.
Check your Galaxy model before connecting
Samsung’s support guidance separates three compatibility categories:
- Wireless DeX: only selected Galaxy phones and tablets can create a DeX session over a wireless display.
- Direct cable or HDMI DeX: a different set of phones and tablets supports DeX through USB-C video output.
- DeX on PC: a separate feature for running the DeX interface through a computer and its software connection.
Some Galaxy Flip and FE models are excluded from particular connection modes, and tablet support also varies. Do not infer support from the product family name alone. Look up the exact model number in Samsung’s current support information for the mode you plan to use.

Software changes can affect the PC feature independently of direct monitor connections. Samsung says DeX on PC is not supported on listed newer models or on devices running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, directing those users to Link to Windows instead. This restriction applies to the PC connection feature; it is not a general prohibition on connecting a supported Galaxy device directly to an external monitor through HDMI.
How to connect DeX to a monitor with a cable
1. Prepare the monitor
- Turn on the monitor or TV.
- Use the monitor’s input control to select the HDMI port you will use.
- Leave the monitor’s HDMI socket accessible while you connect the Galaxy device.
2. Connect the Galaxy device
- Plug the USB-C end of the DeX cable or compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter into the Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter or DeX cable to the monitor’s HDMI input. If your cable already includes HDMI, connect its HDMI end directly to the display.
- Unlock the Galaxy device if it is locked.
- When the DeX prompt appears, accept it to start the desktop interface.
A standard USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is a documented way to start DeX on supported Galaxy devices. The adapter still has to be compatible with the particular device; USB-C connectors do not by themselves guarantee video output or DeX support.

3. Switch from screen mirroring to DeX if necessary
Some devices initially mirror the phone screen instead of opening the desktop. Open Quick Settings or the notification panel and select the DeX control to switch to DeX mode. The wording and location can differ by Galaxy model and software version.
4. Select the correct source when there is no picture
If the monitor reports “No signal,” verify that its selected input matches the HDMI socket you used. Reseat both ends of the HDMI connection, unlock the Galaxy device, and wait for the DeX prompt. If the phone remains in ordinary mirroring mode, use the DeX control in Quick Settings rather than reconnecting repeatedly.
5. Add a hub only when you need more ports
A USB-C HDMI hub can make it easier to attach a wired keyboard and mouse while the display occupies the video connection. It is optional, not a requirement for every setup. Check that the hub is compatible with the exact Galaxy model and supports the required HDMI and USB functions; generic USB-C hubs are not universally interchangeable.
How to connect Wireless DeX
1. Confirm wireless support on both devices
Wireless DeX works with compatible Galaxy models and supported displays. Samsung identifies 2018 and later Samsung TVs, Samsung Smart Monitors, and other devices that support Miracast screen mirroring as supported display categories. A display that can mirror a phone is not automatically guaranteed to provide Wireless DeX, so verify its model and feature support.
2. Put the display in a discoverable state
Turn on the TV or monitor and open its screen-mirroring or wireless-display function if required. The exact menu name depends on the display manufacturer and model.

- Vivid Video: The HDMI adapter lets you connect to any TV or display with an HDMI port to stream video in up to 4K resolution.
- Plug and Play: Instantly turn your laptop’s USB-C port into an HDMI port, with no installation necessary. This product does not support charging or Power Delivery (PD).
- Premium Construction: A lightweight aluminum casing allows for greater heat dissipation, while the reinforced braided-nylon cable is designed to withstand the twists and tugs of daily use.
- Compatibility: Supports USB-C DP Alt mode, USB4, and Thunderbolt connections.
3. Start DeX from Quick Settings
- Unlock the compatible Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Swipe down to open Quick Settings.
- Select DeX.
- Choose the TV or monitor from the available displays.
- Follow the on-screen prompts on the Galaxy device and display.
If the display does not appear, check that wireless screen mirroring is enabled, both devices are within a practical range, and the Galaxy model supports Wireless DeX rather than only wired DeX. Samsung notes that wireless performance can change with network conditions, distance, and compatibility, so a successful connection in one room does not guarantee identical performance elsewhere.
Connect a keyboard and mouse
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse
- Put the keyboard and mouse into pairing mode according to each accessory’s instructions.
- On the Galaxy device, open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth on and select the keyboard when it appears.
- Complete pairing, then repeat the process for the mouse.
- Return to the DeX desktop and test typing, pointer movement, scrolling, and the primary mouse button.
Samsung documents Bluetooth keyboard and mouse use with DeX. Keep the peripherals paired to the Galaxy device that is running the DeX session; pairing them to the monitor does not necessarily make them available to DeX.
Wired USB keyboard and mouse
Connect USB accessories to available ports on the Galaxy device or to a compatible multiport adapter. If the device has only one USB-C port and that port is occupied by the HDMI adapter, use a compatible USB-C HDMI hub with USB ports. Confirm hub compatibility before purchase because support varies by Galaxy model and adapter.
After connecting a wired accessory, wait briefly for Android to recognize it, then test it in DeX. If one accessory works and the other does not, unplug both, reconnect one at a time, and test each USB port. This identifies whether the problem is the peripheral, the port, or the hub.
Use the DeX desktop once it starts
When DeX launches, the monitor shows a desktop-style interface while the Galaxy device continues to provide the apps and processing. Keep the phone or tablet unlocked until the initial session is established. Use the keyboard and mouse to open apps, move and resize windows, and enter text as you would on a conventional desktop interface.

If the monitor shows the phone interface rather than the desktop, check the DeX control in Quick Settings or the notification panel. Do not assume a black or mirrored screen means the hardware is incompatible; the connection may simply be in mirroring mode or on the wrong HDMI input.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot the most common connection problems
The monitor shows no signal
- Confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the HDMI input used by the cable.
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect the USB-C and HDMI ends.
- Unlock the Galaxy device and wait for the connection prompt.
- Try the adapter or cable with the supported connection path specified for the device.
- If you are using a hub, test a direct USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to separate a hub problem from a phone problem.
The phone mirrors instead of starting DeX
- Open Quick Settings or the notification panel.
- Select the DeX control and switch from mirroring to DeX.
- If DeX is not offered, recheck that the exact Galaxy model supports direct cable/HDMI DeX.
Wireless DeX cannot find the display
- Confirm that the display supports Miracast or is a compatible Samsung TV or Smart Monitor.
- Check that the Galaxy model appears on Samsung’s Wireless DeX compatibility list.
- Enable the display’s wireless screen-mirroring mode.
- Move the devices closer and account for network conditions that may affect discovery or stability.
The keyboard or mouse is not responding
- For Bluetooth devices, return to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth, remove an incomplete pairing if necessary, and pair again.
- For USB devices, reconnect them directly or test another port on the compatible hub.
- Check whether the hub is compatible with the Galaxy model and whether the accessory is receiving power.
- Test the keyboard and mouse separately to identify a single failed peripheral.
DeX stops when the cable is removed
Save work before unplugging HDMI. Samsung warns that removing the HDMI connection can restart the DeX session on some devices. Reconnect the cable and accept the prompt again if the session closes.
Disconnect without losing work
- Save documents and finish any important transfers or edits.
- Close or pause apps that are performing work you cannot easily resume.
- Exit DeX using the available DeX control or system option when practical.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable or adapter after the session has been closed, rather than pulling the cable during an active task.
If you need to move between a monitor and the phone screen, expect the DeX session to change when the external display is removed. Reopen the relevant app on the Galaxy device if it does not return to the expected screen automatically.
Accessory buying checklist
- For a direct monitor connection: choose a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter, or a DeX cable with the required HDMI connection.
- For wired input: use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for a cable-free desk, or USB peripherals when the Galaxy device or hub provides suitable ports.
- For several wired accessories: consider a USB-C HDMI hub, but verify compatibility for the exact Galaxy model before buying.
- For Wireless DeX: confirm both the Galaxy model and the display’s Wireless DeX or Miracast capability; an HDMI adapter is not a substitute for missing wireless support.
- For any purchase: distinguish direct monitor DeX from DeX on PC. A limitation affecting the PC feature does not automatically affect wired HDMI DeX.
Final decision
The most dependable general setup is a supported Galaxy device connected to the monitor through a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or DeX cable, with the keyboard and mouse paired over Bluetooth or attached through compatible USB ports. Wireless DeX is useful when both the Galaxy model and display support it, but its availability and performance are more dependent on model, Miracast support, network conditions, and distance. Check the exact Samsung compatibility list for the connection mode you intend to use before purchasing accessories.
