The reliable method is to match the source signal to the destination input, then choose the right kind of adapter. A VCR with yellow, red, and white RCA plugs needs a matching analog input or an active composite-to-HDMI converter for a modern TV. To create computer files, you need a USB video-capture device instead. A phone requires a model-specific wired display adapter or a supported wireless-display feature; a USB-C-shaped connector alone does not guarantee video output.

Start by mapping both ends

Before buying anything, write down or photograph every connector label on the older gadget and every input on the TV, monitor, phone, or computer. Identify the job you want to do: watch the device, mirror a phone, or record video as a computer file. The same connector can require entirely different hardware depending on that goal.

A connector that physically fits is not proof that the electrical signal or protocol is compatible. A passive lead may only rearrange wires; it cannot generally convert analog video to digital HDMI, add a missing tuner, supply drivers, or overcome copy-protection requirements.

Classify the source output

  • Composite AV: usually a yellow RCA jack for video and red/white RCA jacks for right/left audio.
  • S-Video: a round multi-pin connector carrying video separately from audio. Audio still needs its own leads.
  • Component video: commonly red, green, and blue video plugs, with separate audio. It is not interchangeable with composite despite the similar RCA shape.
  • SCART: a large rectangular connector found on some European equipment.
  • RF coaxial: a threaded or push-on antenna-style connector. RF is a different signal path from RCA composite.
  • VGA: a 15-pin analog computer-video connector. VGA carries no audio.
  • HDMI, USB-C, or DisplayPort: digital connections, but the source must support the relevant display protocol and mode.

Classify the destination input

Record whether the destination accepts HDMI, VGA, analog AV, USB, or wireless display connections. Note the exact phone model, television model, computer operating system, and available USB type. Also check the regional video standard used by the source and converter, such as NTSC or PAL, and whether the source provides mono or stereo sound.

Watch an old VCR, camcorder, or console on a modern TV

1. Use a matching analog input when the TV has one

Some newer digital televisions omit composite AV inputs. LG USA Support identifies VHS VCRs, older DVD players, camcorders, and game consoles as devices commonly affected by this mismatch. If the television has a labeled AV, Video, or composite input, connect the color-coded leads directly, select that input with the TV remote, and put the player into playback.

Check the TV manual for any shared-jack arrangement. On some models, the yellow video socket is combined with another input through a supplied breakout cable; plugging into the wrong socket can produce a black screen even when the source is working.

2. Convert composite AV to HDMI when the TV is HDMI-only

For a source with yellow, red, and white RCA outputs and a television that offers only HDMI, buy a powered active converter explicitly labeled composite AV to HDMI. LG describes this as an analog-to-HDMI conversion path, not as an ordinary cable. The direction matters: HDMI-to-composite hardware will not perform the reverse conversion.

  1. Connect the source’s yellow video output to the converter’s composite-video input.
  2. Connect the red and white audio outputs to the converter’s matching audio inputs. If the player is mono, follow its manual for the correct audio jack rather than assuming both channels contain sound.
  3. Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an unused HDMI input on the TV.
  4. Attach the converter’s USB or mains power as specified by its instructions. Many active converters do not operate from signal power alone.
  5. Turn on the player and start playback, then select the TV’s HDMI input.
  6. If the converter has a format switch, select the source’s regional standard, such as NTSC or PAL. Confirm the converter’s supported output resolution matches what the TV accepts.

The cited connection guidance establishes the conversion route but does not certify a particular converter model. Verify the input format, output resolution, audio handling, power requirement, and regional standard on the product documentation before purchase.

3. Use a direct digital route when the player already has HDMI

If the VCR/DVD combination or other player already provides HDMI output, connect it directly to the TV and select that HDMI input. Sony’s VCR/DVD connection guide illustrates why the correct route depends on the ports fitted to that specific player and television; an extra converter may be unnecessary.

4. Treat S-Video, component, SCART, and RF as separate cases

S-Video and component can provide a different connection path from composite, but the TV or converter must explicitly support that connector and signal. Do not plug component leads into composite sockets simply because both use RCA connectors. SCART may require a direction-specific breakout or active converter.

RF coax is not RCA composite. If the player exposes only RF, a composite-to-HDMI converter will not accept it. You may need a compatible tuner or RF-to-composite/modulator chain; the exact hardware sequence depends on the source and was not established for every model, so check the manuals before buying.

Transfer VHS or camcorder tapes to a computer

Viewing and digitizing are different jobs. A composite-to-HDMI converter sends a signal to a display; it does not normally create a video file. To record, use a working VCR or camcorder that can play the tape, a USB capture device that explicitly accepts the source’s analog video and audio, and capture software supported by your computer.

Equipment checklist

  • A functioning tape player with composite or S-Video video output and matching analog audio output.
  • A USB video-capture device with the same input type. Do not assume a generic USB adapter can ingest analog video.
  • A computer with a compatible USB port, operating system, drivers, and recording application.
  • Enough storage for the captured files and a way to back them up after recording.

Capture procedure

  1. Connect the yellow composite lead, or the S-Video lead, from the player to the capture device’s video input.
  2. Connect the red and white audio leads to the capture device’s left and right audio inputs. Keep the audio pair matched to the selected video input.
  3. Plug the capture device into the computer. A VHS/DVD conversion instruction sheet from the MCDL/Family History Library Center (metadata dated 2020) demonstrates this RCA-to-USB arrangement.
  4. Install only the driver or application supplied or documented for the capture hardware. Confirm that the operating system recognizes the device.
  5. Open the capture program, select the USB device as the video and audio source, and choose the correct input (composite or S-Video).
  6. Preview the tape. Check that motion, color, and sound are present before starting a full recording.
  7. Start recording in the software, then start playback on the VCR or camcorder. Stop the software recording before stopping the player so the file closes cleanly.
  8. Play the resulting file on the computer and copy it to a second storage location.

Microsoft’s documentation on USB DV video devices explains the technical USB-video framework and notes that older DirectShow material has been superseded by newer Media Foundation APIs. That page is not a certification of every current consumer analog-capture dongle or application. Check the capture manufacturer’s operating-system support and your software’s device list before relying on a particular combination.

  • HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.

What capture can and cannot improve

Capture records the signal available from the tape; it cannot restore detail that is absent from a worn or low-resolution original. The available evidence does not establish a reliable performance ranking among inexpensive capture devices, recording programs, or restoration tools, so choose on verified compatibility rather than promises of automatic quality improvement.

Connect an iPhone or other phone to a TV or monitor

Identify the exact phone model and port

For an iPhone, Apple’s wired-display guidance separates phones with a Lightning connector from supported phones with USB-C. Use the adapter intended for the phone’s model, connect HDMI or VGA from the adapter to the display, and select the display’s corresponding input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple’s USB-C support information names the supported iPhone model families and describes a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable for HDMI displays. For supported phones and HDMI 2.0-capable accessories, it specifies output up to 4K at 60 Hz. Treat that as a model- and accessory-dependent specification, not a universal property of every USB-C phone.

Understand USB-C video support

USB-C describes a connector, not one guaranteed video feature. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI Alt Mode specification allows an HDMI-enabled source to use USB-C directly with an HDMI display, but the source device must implement that mode. A USB-C charging cable or a phone that supports only USB data and charging will not necessarily produce a picture.

  1. Confirm the phone model’s wired-display support in its manufacturer documentation.
  2. Choose the matching Lightning or USB-C display adapter, not merely a cable with the same plug shape.
  3. Connect the adapter to the phone, connect HDMI to the TV or monitor, and connect any required power input to the adapter.
  4. Select the HDMI input used by the adapter and unlock the phone if prompted.

When VGA is the only display input

Apple notes that VGA does not carry audio. A Lightning- or USB-C-to-VGA path may show the picture while requiring a separate audio route, such as the display’s analog audio input or another supported speaker connection. Confirm that the adapter and phone support the required output before purchasing.

Wireless alternatives and protected content

If wired output is not supported, check the phone maker’s wireless-display instructions and the television’s wireless capabilities. No single Android compatibility list applies to every model, so verify the exact phone and TV combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some streaming applications or titles require an HDCP-compatible connection. Apple’s support material warns that protected video can behave differently from the phone’s home screen. If an app shows a blank screen while ordinary menus mirror correctly, check the app’s and adapter’s content-protection compatibility instead of assuming the cable is defective.

Connect an older gadget to a computer: choose the computer’s role

First decide whether the computer is acting as a display, a recorder, or a data host.

  • As a display: use a compatible digital or analog video input. A normal USB port is not automatically a monitor input.
  • As a recorder: use a USB capture interface for analog video, as described in the tape-transfer procedure.
  • As a data host: an old USB peripheral, serial instrument, parallel device, optical disc drive, removable card, or FireWire gadget may need the correct protocol, driver, power, and application in addition to a physical adapter.

The available connection guidance focuses on legacy video and phone-display routes. It does not verify specific serial, parallel, FireWire, or optical-drive adapters, so research exact model compatibility before recommending or purchasing one.

Compare the main connection routes

Goal Source signal Destination Hardware type Expected result Important checks
Watch a VCR or camcorder Composite RCA, S-Video, component, SCART, or HDMI TV analog input or HDMI input Direct cable when ports match; active converter when they do not Live playback on the TV Conversion direction, NTSC/PAL, audio, power, and TV input selection
Digitize a tape Composite or S-Video plus analog audio Computer USB USB video-capture device and capture software A recorded computer file Input format, operating-system support, software device selection, and storage
Mirror a supported phone Lightning or USB-C display output TV or monitor HDMI/VGA input Model-compatible display adapter or cable Phone screen or supported app output Exact phone model, Alt Mode or adapter support, VGA audio limits, HDCP, and display input
Use an old peripheral with a computer USB, serial, parallel, optical, FireWire, or another legacy protocol Computer port and software Protocol-specific adapter, driver, and sometimes external power Data exchange or device control Exact model, drivers, power, operating system, and application support

Troubleshoot by symptom

No picture from a VCR or camcorder

  • Confirm that the converter receives composite video and sends HDMI; reverse-direction hardware will not work.
  • Reconnect every plug, check converter power, and select the HDMI or AV input actually in use.
  • Put the player in playback rather than pause, stop, or tuner mode.
  • Check that the converter supports the source’s NTSC or PAL standard and an output resolution accepted by the TV.

Picture but no sound

  • Reconnect the red and white audio leads and verify that the converter accepts audio as well as video.
  • Check whether the source is mono and whether its manual specifies one particular audio jack.
  • If the connection uses VGA, add a separate audio path; VGA carries no audio.

The phone does not display

  • Verify the exact phone model’s wired-video capability rather than relying on the connector shape.
  • Use the appropriate Lightning or USB-C adapter and connect any required power.
  • Select the correct TV input and test with the phone unlocked.
  • If menus appear but a streaming title is blank, investigate HDCP and app restrictions.

The computer sees no capture video

  • Confirm that the capture device accepts the player’s connector and video standard.
  • Check the operating system’s device list and install the documented driver if required.
  • In the recording application, select the capture device and the correct composite or S-Video input.
  • Preview with the player actively playing before troubleshooting the file format or storage.

A purchase checklist that prevents most mismatches

  1. Write the source’s exact output labels and the destination’s exact input labels.
  2. Decide whether you need live viewing, phone mirroring, or a computer recording.
  3. Determine whether the path is direct, a protocol adapter, an active analog-to-digital converter, or a capture interface.
  4. Check direction: composite-to-HDMI is not HDMI-to-composite.
  5. Verify NTSC/PAL support, mono/stereo audio handling, output resolution, and required USB or mains power.
  6. For phones, verify the exact model, wired-display support, and any HDMI Alt Mode requirement.
  7. For capture, verify operating-system and application compatibility before buying.
  8. Keep expectations realistic: the destination cannot display or record a signal that the source does not actually output.
