Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Install MongoDB’s official mongodb driver, give it a URI containing the VPS host, port, database and credentials, then verify the session with a ping. For a secure deployment, make MongoDB listen only on a private or loopback address, allow the application host through the firewall, use a least-privilege database user, and enable certificate-validated TLS when the deployment requires encrypted transport.
What the connection actually requires
A Node.js process does not connect to a VPS “database” generically. It opens a MongoDB client session to a listener at a host and port, authenticates as a MongoDB user, and selects a database for application operations. The pieces are:

mongodbdriver installed in your application. - A MongoDB URI such as
mongodb://USER:PASSWORD@DB_HOST:27017/APP_DB?authSource=admin. - A MongoDB server that is running and listening on an address reachable from the Node.js process.
- A VPS firewall or cloud security-group rule that permits the application host or private network, not the entire internet.
- Authentication configured on MongoDB and an application user with only the permissions it needs.
- TLS settings, certificate files and hostname validation when encrypted transport is required.
The application-side code is nearly the same whether MongoDB is self-managed on a VPS or hosted by a managed provider. The operational work around that connection—patching, backups, monitoring, certificates, network controls and scaling—is what changes.
Choose a safe network topology first
Node.js and MongoDB on the same VPS
Use a loopback address or a private socket path where practical. Keeping MongoDB off the public interface removes an entire class of unsolicited connection attempts. The Node.js process can connect to 127.0.0.1 (or the server’s private interface) while the operating-system firewall blocks external access.

Node.js and MongoDB on separate VPS instances
Use the provider’s private network or a VPN when one is available. Configure MongoDB’s net.bindIp to include only the private interface needed by the application, and permit TCP port 27017 only from the application host or private network. Do not expose that port to every internet address.
Managed MongoDB service
The driver and URI pattern remain familiar, but the provider generally takes responsibility for parts of patching, backups, monitoring and scaling. You still need to configure the provider’s network access, credentials, TLS requirements and least-privilege users. Compare the two approaches on operational responsibility, network topology, security controls, certificate management, scaling and total cost rather than on the URI alone.

Prepare the VPS and application
Confirm the software boundary
- Run the Node.js application from a host that can resolve the MongoDB hostname.
- Know whether MongoDB is on the same VPS, another private address or a managed endpoint.
- Know which database will hold the application data and which authentication database contains the user.
- Have administrative access to configure MongoDB’s listener, users and TLS files, plus firewall access on the relevant VPS or cloud network.
Do not put a password directly in a committed JavaScript file. Plan to inject the complete URI through an environment variable or a secret manager during deployment.
Install the official driver
From the Node.js project directory, install the driver:
npm install mongodb
The package supplies MongoClient, the client class used to open and close sessions and select databases and collections.

Build the MongoDB URI
Conventional self-managed URI
A common self-managed shape is:
mongodb://USER:PASSWORD@DB_HOST:27017/APP_DB?authSource=admin
Replace each placeholder with the actual username, password, reachable hostname or private IP address, port, and application database. The authSource value must name the database in which the user was created; admin is common, but it is not universal. Use the authentication database and mechanism configured on your MongoDB server.

Encode credentials and URI values
Usernames and passwords containing characters reserved by URI syntax must be percent-encoded before they are placed in a URI. A password containing @, for example, cannot be pasted unescaped into the authority portion because @ separates credentials from the host. Store the resulting URI as one secret rather than assembling it from untrusted request data.
If you use certificate authentication and put a client certificate key-file path in the URI, URI-encode that path as required by the driver’s X.509 connection format.
Keep the URI outside source control
For a shell-based deployment, an environment variable can be supplied before starting Node.js:
export MONGODB_URI='mongodb://app_user:encoded-password@10.0.0.12:27017/appdb?authSource=admin'
export MONGODB_DB='appdb'
node src/server.js
Use your process manager or deployment secret store to provide these values in production. Restrict who can read the environment or secret, and rotate the database password through the same deployment mechanism when it changes.

Configure MongoDB to accept the connection
Set the listener address
MongoDB exposes its network listener through the net.bindIp server configuration option. Bind to loopback for a same-VPS application, or to a tightly controlled private interface for a separate application host. A listener on a public address should be considered an intentional exposure that demands strict firewall rules and hardened authentication.
After changing the MongoDB configuration, restart the MongoDB service using the service manager for your operating system, then verify that it is running and listening on the expected address and port.
Restrict the firewall
Create an inbound rule for TCP 27017 only from the Node.js host’s private address, application subnet or VPN network. If both processes share one VPS and MongoDB is bound to loopback, an external firewall rule for MongoDB is unnecessary. Keep your SSH and application rules separate from the database rule so a later firewall edit does not accidentally broaden database access.
Create an application user with authentication enabled
Enable MongoDB authentication and create a dedicated user for the Node.js application before exposing a remote connection. Grant only the permissions required for the application database; do not use a cluster-wide administrative account in the application URI.
The user’s authentication database, password and selected mechanism must match the URI and the server configuration. A mismatch commonly produces an authentication error even when the network path is working. Keep administrative credentials separate from the application secret and rotate the application credential through deployment rather than editing source files.

Connect with MongoClient
Minimal ESM connection
This pattern connects once, verifies the server with a ping, selects the configured database and closes the client during an orderly process shutdown:
import { MongoClient } from "mongodb";
const uri = process.env.MONGODB_URI;
if (!uri) {
throw new Error("MONGODB_URI is required");
}
const client = new MongoClient(uri, {
connectTimeoutMS: 10_000,
serverSelectionTimeoutMS: 10_000,
});
await client.connect();
await client.db("admin").command({ ping: 1 });
const db = client.db(process.env.MONGODB_DB || "app");
const items = db.collection("items");
process.on("SIGTERM", async () => {
await client.close();
process.exit(0);
});
// Use items.find(), items.insertOne(), and other operations in your handlers.
The explicit time limits prevent a failed network path from leaving startup waiting indefinitely. The ping checks that the client can reach and communicate with a MongoDB server; it is a useful startup or health-check operation, not a substitute for testing an actual application query.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reuse the client
Create the MongoClient once during application startup and reuse the resulting client and database handle for requests. Do not construct and close a new client for every HTTP request. Closing the client belongs in orderly shutdown handling, such as the SIGTERM handler used above, so the process manager can stop the application cleanly.
CommonJS alternative
If the project uses CommonJS rather than ESM, load the same driver with require and keep the connection lifecycle identical:
const { MongoClient } = require("mongodb");
const client = new MongoClient(process.env.MONGODB_URI, {
connectTimeoutMS: 10_000,
serverSelectionTimeoutMS: 10_000,
});
async function start() {
await client.connect();
await client.db("admin").command({ ping: 1 });
const db = client.db(process.env.MONGODB_DB || "app");
// Start the HTTP server after the database connection succeeds.
}
start().catch(async (error) => {
await client.close();
console.error(error);
process.exit(1);
});
Enable certificate-validated TLS
Server certificate validation
For encrypted transport, add tls=true to the URI or pass { tls: true } to MongoClient. If the server certificate is signed by a CA that the platform trust store does not know, provide that CA file with tlsCAFile:

const client = new MongoClient(process.env.MONGODB_URI, {
tls: true,
tlsCAFile: "/etc/ssl/mongodb/ca.pem",
connectTimeoutMS: 10_000,
});
Verify that the certificate is current, that its hostname matches the host in the URI, and that the Node.js process can read the CA file. File permissions should expose the key and certificate material only to the account that needs it.
Do not disable validation in production
MongoDB documents tlsAllowInvalidCertificates, tlsAllowInvalidHostnames and tlsInsecure as testing options. They disable certificate or hostname validation and make the connection insecure in production. If a TLS connection fails, correct the CA chain, hostname, expiry or file permissions instead of adding one of these bypasses.
X.509 client-certificate authentication
When the deployment is configured for certificate authentication, use the MONGODB-X509 authentication mechanism together with TLS and the client certificate key file required by the server. The server and client exchange X.509 public-key certificates over TLS. Ensure the certificate subject, trust chain and file permissions meet the server’s policy, and URI-encode a certificate path when it is supplied inside the URI.
Verify connectivity before debugging application code
Run checks from the same VPS and under the same network path as the Node.js process:
- Resolve the database hostname with the operating system’s DNS tools. A name that resolves on your laptop may not resolve on the application VPS.
- Test whether the target port is reachable from the application host using an appropriate TCP utility, such as
nc -vz DB_HOST 27017where that utility is installed. - Inspect MongoDB’s
net.bindIpsetting and confirm the service is listening on the expected address and port. - Review the VPS firewall and any cloud security-group rule for a source restriction that includes the application host or private network.
- Only after the network path works, check the username, password,
authSourceand authentication mechanism. - For TLS failures, check CA trust, certificate hostname, expiry and client-key permissions. Keep validation enabled.
- Use finite
connectTimeoutMSandserverSelectionTimeoutMSvalues, then inspect the resulting driver error rather than waiting on an unbounded startup attempt.
Diagnose the most common failures
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Connection times out or server selection never succeeds | Network path | Hostname resolution, MongoDB service state, net.bindIp, port 27017, firewall and private-network routing. |
| Connection is refused immediately | Listener or service | Whether MongoDB is running, whether it is listening on the URI’s host and port, and whether the URI uses the correct port. |
| Authentication failed | Credentials or authorization database | Username, password, authSource, configured mechanism and the user’s permissions. |
| TLS certificate or hostname error | Certificate validation | CA file, certificate chain, hostname match, expiry and readable key or CA-file permissions. |
| Works locally but not from the application VPS | Topology or DNS | Resolve the name and test the port from the application VPS; check that MongoDB binds to an interface reachable from that host. |
| Works until the process is redeployed | Configuration delivery | Whether MONGODB_URI, MONGODB_DB, CA files and client certificates are present and readable in the new process environment. |
A timeout normally indicates that the process cannot complete server selection over the network; changing a password will not fix a blocked port. Conversely, an authentication error indicates that a server answered and the investigation should move to credentials, authentication database and mechanism.
Production checklist
- Install and pin the official
mongodbdriver through your normal Node.js dependency workflow. - Store the URI and any certificate paths in environment variables or a secret manager, never in committed source.
- Use a dedicated MongoDB user with only application-database permissions.
- Bind MongoDB to loopback or a private interface through
net.bindIp. - Allow the database port only from the application host, private subnet or VPN.
- Use
tls=trueand a trustedtlsCAFilewhen TLS is required. - Keep hostname and certificate validation enabled; do not deploy the invalid-certificate, invalid-hostname or insecure bypass options.
- Connect once at startup, run a ping, reuse the client and close it on orderly shutdown.
- Set finite connection and server-selection timeouts and log driver errors without logging passwords or complete secret URIs.
- Plan credential rotation, certificate renewal, backups, monitoring and patching as part of VPS operations.
Connection model versus operational responsibility
| Decision area | Self-managed MongoDB on a VPS | Managed MongoDB deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Application connection code | Official driver and MongoDB URI | Official driver and provider URI |
| Network design | Configure net.bindIp, VPS firewall and private routing |
Configure provider network access and the application’s route |
| Authentication | Create users and select mechanisms on the server | Create users and select mechanisms through the provider’s controls |
| TLS and certificates | Operate server certificates, CA trust and optional client certificates | Follow the provider’s certificate and trust requirements |
| Operations | Plan patching, backups, monitoring and scaling yourself | Compare which patching, backup, monitoring and scaling tasks the service includes |
Because the driver-side pattern is stable across these environments, you can change the deployment topology without rewriting data-access code; you normally change the URI, network policy and operational procedures instead.
Orderly shutdown and credential changes
When a process manager sends SIGTERM, stop accepting new work, allow in-flight operations to finish according to your application’s shutdown policy, then call client.close(). On a credential rotation, create or update the replacement user, deploy the new secret, verify the ping and application query, and then retire the old credential. This avoids a deployment that changes the password before the running application has received the replacement URI.
