To play local multiplayer, do two separate things: pair every controller with the console, then add each controller as a player in the game. On Nintendo Switch, open HOME > Controllers > Change Grip and Order, hold each controller’s SYNC button for at least one second, and confirm whether each Joy-Con is being used horizontally or as part of a pair. On PlayStation 5, connect a new DualSense to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
A controller can be connected to the console without being assigned to the current game. The title, mode, controller type and local-player limit determine how many people can actually play. Pairing capacity is therefore not the same as the number of local players a game supports.
Pairing and joining a game are different steps
Console pairing establishes a wireless or wired connection. The game then asks which connected controller belongs to each player and, in some titles, which grip or controller type that player is using. Stop after the first step and the extra controller may appear connected while the second player remains absent from the lobby.
Most local-multiplayer sessions follow this order:
- Check the game’s local-player count and supported controller arrangements.
- Pair or connect every controller at the console level.
- Start the game’s local, versus, co-op or split-screen mode.
- At the player-selection screen, press the requested button on each controller and confirm the displayed player number.
- Begin the match only after every intended player is shown as active.
Check the game before adding hardware
Look at the game’s local multiplayer menu rather than relying on the console’s headline controller capacity. A console may accept several wireless controllers while a particular title supports fewer local players, permits only certain controller types, or reserves some controllers for menus and accessories.

- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Handheld Nintendo Switch gaming at a great price
- Comes with charging cable (USB C to USB A)
- Confirm that the selected mode is local multiplayer, not an online-only or single-player mode.
- Check the game’s maximum local-player count for that mode.
- Check whether each player may use a single Joy-Con, a Joy-Con pair, a Pro-style controller, or another supported device.
- Keep the game’s player-registration screen visible while pairing; many titles require a button press from each player after the console connection is complete.
- If the game uses local communication, verify that all consoles or controllers are using the mode the game requests.
Nintendo Switch: connect several controllers
1. Open the controller-order screen
From the HOME Menu, select Controllers, then choose Change Grip and Order. This screen is where the Switch listens for new wireless controllers and lets you establish the order used by the console.
2. Put each controller into pairing mode
- Hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- Wait for the player LED(s) to remain lit. Steady LEDs indicate that the controller is connected.
- Repeat the process for each additional controller.
Nintendo’s pairing instructions are documented in its Controller Pairing on Nintendo Switch FAQ. A controller that was paired previously can usually reconnect by pressing a button. Holding SYNC for at least one second temporarily disconnects a wireless controller; it does not permanently erase the pairing.
3. Confirm the physical grip for every Joy-Con
Pairing does not tell the Switch how a Joy-Con will be held. Confirm the arrangement shown on the pairing screen:
Recommended Free Tools
- For a left-and-right Joy-Con pair used as one controller, press L on the left Joy-Con and R on the right, or press the paired ZL and ZR buttons when the screen requests them.
- For one Joy-Con held horizontally as an individual controller, press SL and SR on that Joy-Con.
- For a Switch Pro Controller, follow the on-screen prompt for that controller.
Nintendo’s How to Pair Joy-Con Controllers guidance covers the grip confirmation step. If the arrangement is wrong, the game may show the controller as connected but assign the wrong buttons or refuse to add the player.

4. Register players inside the game
Launch the game and select its local multiplayer mode. When it asks players to join, have each person press the requested button on the controller they intend to use. The game should display a separate player slot for each accepted controller.
For example, Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe local multiplayer instructions show the game-level choice among a single horizontal Joy-Con, a Joy-Con pair and a Switch Pro Controller. The game’s own supported player count and mode, not merely the number of controllers visible in Change Grip and Order, decides whether the session can start.
How many Switch controllers can be connected?
Nintendo says that, in most circumstances, up to eight wireless controllers can be connected to one console. That is a connection figure, not a universal eight-player promise. The practical result depends on controller type, features in use and local communication.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Switch situation | How Nintendo describes the count | What it means for local play |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless controllers in ordinary circumstances | Up to eight, according to Nintendo Support | The game may support fewer players or fewer controller arrangements. |
| Wireless Joy-Con | The left and right Joy-Con count separately when connected wirelessly. | A pair can be used as one game controller or split into two solo controllers if the game supports that arrangement. |
| Switch Pro Controller | Counts as one wireless controller. | It occupies one controller connection and still must be accepted by the game. |
| Bluetooth audio connected | No more than two wireless controllers can be connected while Bluetooth audio is connected. | Disconnect Bluetooth audio before trying to add a third wireless controller. |
The eight-controller statement and the Bluetooth-audio restriction are manufacturer-published limits, not results from an independent test. Nintendo’s support page places the qualification about controller type, features and local communication alongside the capacity figure.

- This Amazon Renewed product is professionally inspected and tested by an Amazon qualified supplier. Box and accessories may be generic.
- Take your game sessions up a notch with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
- Includes motion controls, HD rumble, built-in amiibo functionality, and more.
- Comes with charging cable (USB-C to USB-A)
Optional wired pairing and charging accessories
A Joy-Con charging grip can be connected to the dock with its included USB cable for USB connection pairing. It is optional: ordinary wireless pairing does not require it, and the grip does not increase the Switch’s controller capacity. Treat it as a charging or wired-connection convenience rather than a way to add players.
PlayStation 5: pair DualSense controllers
First-time DualSense pairing
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button.
- When the console recognizes it, disconnect the cable if you want to continue wirelessly.
Use the same process for each controller that has not yet been paired with that PS5. PlayStation’s current Controllers Support page contains the platform’s pairing, device-software and reset guidance.
Add each controller to the game
After the DualSense controllers are connected, open the game’s local multiplayer mode. Have each player press the button requested by the game and confirm that a separate player profile or slot appears. PS5 pairing by itself does not establish the game’s player count; the title and selected mode still control that limit.

PlayStation documents that a DualSense Edge can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time and that up to four DualSense Edge controllers can be used simultaneously. This is an Edge-specific hardware statement. Do not apply it as a blanket limit for every PS5 controller or assume that every game supports four local players.

If a DualSense will not pair
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press the small reset button on the back of the controller.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
This reset-and-USB recovery sequence is documented by PlayStation. Once the controller is recognized, return to the game’s player-selection screen and register it there.
Xbox: verify the model-specific procedure
Xbox pairing steps and controller limits vary by console generation and controller model. The official Xbox material available for this guide did not provide a readable, verifiable pairing sequence, so no button combination or maximum is presented here as fact.
For an Xbox session, use the current instructions shown by the console and the controller manufacturer for your exact model, then apply the same two-stage method: establish the controller connection first and join the local game with the game’s own player prompt. Do not transfer the Switch eight-controller figure or the PS5 Edge figure to Xbox.
Console comparison at a glance
| Question | Nintendo Switch | PlayStation 5 | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| First pairing method covered here | HOME > Controllers > Change Grip and Order, then hold SYNC for at least one second. | Connect the new DualSense by USB and press PS. | Use current model-specific console and manufacturer instructions; a verified sequence is not stated here. |
| Can one physical pair become two controllers? | Yes. Left and right Joy-Con can be used separately when the game supports single horizontal Joy-Con play. | Not applicable to a DualSense pair; each DualSense is a separate controller. | Not stated here. |
| Published connection qualification | Up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances; Bluetooth audio limits the console to two wireless controllers. | Up to four DualSense Edge controllers simultaneously is documented for Edge; game limits still apply. | Not stated here. |
| Documented recovery | Reconnect by pressing a button; for pairing problems, try the Pro Controller steps below or clear pairings as a last resort. | Power off, press the rear reset button, reconnect by USB and press PS. | Use current model-specific support instructions. |
Troubleshoot by symptom
The console does not see the controller
- Confirm that the controller has charge or is connected by a data-capable USB cable where USB pairing is required.
- On Switch, return to Controllers > Change Grip and Order and hold SYNC for at least one second. Wait for steady player LEDs.
- On PS5, connect the DualSense by USB and press PS; if it still fails, use the documented reset procedure.
- For a third-party controller, check the maker’s compatibility list and pairing instructions. Nintendo directs users with third-party pairing problems to that manufacturer.
The controller is connected, but the game has no second player
- Back out to the game’s local multiplayer or player-selection screen.
- Press the join button requested by the game on the unused controller.
- Confirm the game has created a second player slot.
- Recheck the selected mode’s local-player limit and supported controller types.
This is the most common distinction between a successful console connection and a successful multiplayer setup: the game still needs to register the controller.

A Joy-Con is assigned the wrong buttons
Return to the Switch pairing screen and repeat the grip confirmation. Use L and R for a Joy-Con pair, or SL and SR for one horizontal Joy-Con. Pairing without confirming the intended grip leaves the console without the information needed to map the controls correctly.
A previously working Switch controller disappeared
Press a button on the controller to reconnect it. If it was deliberately disconnected, pressing SYNC for at least one second during the controller workflow can restore the connection process.
A Switch Pro Controller will not pair over USB
Nintendo’s Unable to Pair or Sync Nintendo Switch Pro Controller guidance recommends trying another USB port on the dock or another cable. It also suggests pressing SYNC once and then pressing another button. If model identity matters, check that the controller is the official HAC-013 model covered by the support instructions.
You need to erase Switch wireless pairings
Use this only after ordinary reconnection and pairing attempts fail. On the Switch, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Disconnect Controllers. This clears the wireless pairings, so every controller must be paired again afterward.
Bluetooth audio prevents another Switch controller
Disconnect the Bluetooth audio device and retry pairing. Nintendo limits the console to no more than two wireless controllers while Bluetooth audio is connected, so a third controller will not connect until that condition is removed.
Choosing controllers for a group session
Start with the game’s supported arrangements, then buy or borrow controllers that match them. A Switch Pro Controller is a straightforward additional-player option when the title supports it. Extra Joy-Con can be more flexible because a left/right pair may operate as one controller or be split into two horizontal controllers, but the game must support the selected arrangement.
- Count physical wireless devices the way the console counts them, not just the number of people in the room.
- Check whether a single Joy-Con provides every button the game requires.
- Leave room for restrictions caused by Bluetooth audio, local communication or special game modes.
- Do not assume a generic adapter will be accepted. Compatibility and reliability vary by platform and were not established for this setup.
- Remember that a charging grip supplies charging or USB pairing convenience; it does not add controller slots.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Read the game’s local-player and controller requirements.
- Charge every controller and keep appropriate USB cables available for first-time pairing or recovery.
- Pair controllers in the console’s controller menu or by the documented USB method.
- On Switch, confirm the grip for every Joy-Con before leaving the pairing screen.
- Open the game’s local mode and have each player join from the controller they will use.
- Check that the intended number of player slots is visible before starting.
- If a controller fails, troubleshoot the console connection first, then repeat the game’s player-registration step.
The practical rule for local multiplayer
Think of a multiplayer session as a chain: compatible controller, console connection, correct physical grip, game-supported mode and player registration. A break anywhere in that chain can look like a pairing failure. Working through those stages in order prevents buying unnecessary accessories and makes clear whether the limit comes from the controller, the console or the game.
