To connect the included Joy-Con 2 controllers, slide the right controller onto the right side of the Switch 2 and the left controller onto the left side. The console registers them automatically, and they remain available for wireless use after you detach them.
To pair another controller without attaching it, turn on the console, open Controllers > Change Grip/Order from the HOME Menu, then hold that controller’s SYNC button for at least one second. Pairing is not complete until you confirm the grip shown on screen with the requested L/R, ZL/ZR, or SL/SR buttons.
The important distinction is that registration and grip selection are separate steps. Attaching Joy-Con 2 registers them directly, while wireless pairing adds a controller and then asks whether it will be used as a combined pair or as an individual horizontal controller.
Choose the connection method that fits your setup
Switch 2 supports three practical ways to register or pair controllers. The best choice depends on whether the console is within reach and whether you already own the optional charging grip.

The charging grip is optional. You do not need to buy it to pair a controller wirelessly. The HOME Menu method is normally the simplest route for an additional wireless controller because it requires no separate hardware beyond the controller itself.
Before you start
Turn Switch 2 on fully before attempting to pair anything. A controller cannot be paired while the console is asleep, so wake it and wait until the HOME Menu is available. Keep the controller close enough for the console to receive the SYNC command, and have the intended arrangement in mind before confirming the on-screen prompt.
If more than two wireless controllers are needed, check whether Bluetooth audio is connected. Nintendo limits the active wireless-controller count to two while a Bluetooth audio device is in use. Because each Joy-Con 2 counts as one controller, a left-and-right pair already uses both available connections in that situation.

Attach the included Joy-Con 2 controllers
Orient the console and controllers correctly
Nintendo’s attachment procedure starts with the Switch 2 upright and facing you. The right Joy-Con 2 has the + button and belongs on the right side. The left Joy-Con 2 has the − button and belongs on the left.
Attach the right Joy-Con 2
- Hold the console upright with its screen facing you.
- Bring the right Joy-Con 2 to the right rail, keeping the controller aligned with the rail.
- Align the bottom of the controller, then bring its top edge close to the console until it clicks into place.
- Keep your fingers clear of the gap between the controller and the console while it seats.
Attach the left Joy-Con 2
- Repeat the same movement on the left side with the Joy-Con 2 marked with the − button.
- Confirm that both controllers are fully seated and that neither is at an angle.
Attached controllers are ready to use and are paired to that console. Detaching them later does not remove their wireless registration, so you can continue using them away from the console without repeating the pairing process.
Attach the controller straps before starting a game or other software. The straps help secure detached controllers when you are using motion controls or sharing them with another player. Put the strap on before launching the software rather than stopping after a game has already begun.
What physical attachment does and does not do
Sliding a Joy-Con 2 onto the matching rail both establishes the physical connection and registers the controller with Switch 2. It does not force you to keep playing in handheld mode: once detached, the same controllers remain registered for wireless use. You also do not need to open the pairing menu just to register the included pair when attaching them correctly.

Prepare the console
The console must be powered on; controllers cannot be paired while Switch 2 is asleep. Wake the console first, and keep the controller you want to add close enough for its SYNC button press to be detected.
Start pairing
- From the HOME Menu, select Controllers.
- Select Change Grip/Order.
- On the controller you want to pair, press and hold the SYNC button for at least one second. The button is used to begin pairing; a brief tap may not be sufficient.
- Wait for the player LED assigned to that controller number to remain lit. A steady player indicator means the console has completed the pairing stage.
Nintendo’s instruction is: “From the Change Grip/Order screen, hold the SYNC Button for at least one second on the controller you wish to pair.” The menu is important because the console also needs to know how the controller will be held.

Confirm the grip shown on screen
After the SYNC step, use the button combination that matches your intended arrangement. Pairing through SYNC alone does not define whether two Joy-Con 2 are one combined controller or two separate horizontal controllers.

If you confirm the wrong arrangement, return to Controllers > Change Grip/Order and repeat the grip confirmation with the correct buttons. This is the fix when a game shows two players even though you intended one full controller, or when it combines a pair that should belong to two players.

Pairing one extra controller versus a pair of Joy-Con 2
An extra controller can be added on its own, but two Joy-Con 2 can also be added and then identified as one combined grip. The console’s question is about the intended use, not merely how many devices are nearby. Pressing L and R, or ZL and ZR, tells Switch 2 that the left and right units should operate together. Pressing SL and SR on each unit tells it to assign them separately for horizontal play.
Do not stop at the first sign that a player LED has lit. The LED confirms the assigned controller number, while the grip confirmation determines the control layout. Both stages matter for multiplayer software.
Pair Joy-Con 2 through the optional charging grip
The Joy-Con 2 charging grip provides a second setup route. It is a separately sold accessory, not a requirement for wireless pairing.
- Power on the Switch 2.
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the Joy-Con 2 charging grip.
- Connect the grip to the Switch 2 dock with the USB-C cable included with the grip.
- Leave the controllers mounted while the console registers them through the dock connection.
This method is useful when your controllers are already in the charging grip or when you want them connected to a dock-side setup. It differs from the HOME Menu method because the controller is mounted in a grip connected by cable rather than being paired solely through the controller’s wireless SYNC procedure.
The accessory comparison is straightforward: physical attachment needs no accessory but requires reaching the console; menu pairing needs no accessory and is the normal wireless method; USB pairing requires both the separately sold charging grip and its included USB-C cable, plus access to the dock. Buying the grip is therefore a convenience or charging choice, not a prerequisite for adding another controller.
Set the controller layout for the game you are playing
Use both Joy-Con 2 together
For games that expect a full left-and-right controller, hold the two Joy-Con 2 as a pair. Confirm that arrangement in Change Grip/Order with L/R or ZL/ZR, as prompted.
Use one Joy-Con 2 horizontally
Some supported software lets each Joy-Con 2 function as an individual horizontal controller. Select that arrangement in the pairing screen and press SL and SR on each controller. The console then assigns each one separately instead of combining the pair.

Use Joy-Con 2 in handheld or tabletop mode
When the controllers are attached, they are available for handheld play. When detached, they can be paired wirelessly for tabletop play or for supported multiplayer layouts. Whether a particular game accepts one horizontal Joy-Con, a dual grip, or another arrangement is determined by that software’s controller support.

Switch 2 can recognize a layout that a particular title does not support, so check the game’s own controller options if the expected arrangement is unavailable. The console’s grip confirmation establishes player assignments; the software decides which supported layouts it can use.
Can original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con be used with Switch 2?
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot physically attach to the Switch 2 console. Do not try to use the original controllers as if they were Joy-Con 2 on the console rails.
Original Joy-Con also need a Nintendo Switch or a compatible accessory for charging, such as a Joy-Con charging grip or a two-way charging stand. Their wireless compatibility does not make them interchangeable with Joy-Con 2 for physical attachment or charging.
For an original Joy-Con, use the same HOME Menu route: open Controllers > Change Grip/Order, hold its SYNC button for at least one second, and complete the layout prompt. The wireless pairing capability does not change the physical-attachment limitation.

Eight-controller pairing maximum
Nintendo UK says one Switch 2 console can pair up to eight wireless controllers. That is a pairing ceiling, not a promise that eight controllers can be connected simultaneously in every situation. The number that can be connected at once varies with controller type and the features being used.
Think of eight as the console’s stored-pairing maximum, not a guaranteed eight-player mode. A game may support fewer players, and the active connection count can be reduced by controller type or another feature such as Bluetooth audio.
Bluetooth audio reduces the active limit
When a Bluetooth audio device is in use, Nintendo’s guidance limits the console to no more than two connected wireless controllers. Each Joy-Con 2 counts as one controller, so a left-and-right pair uses both available controller connections. If you need a third controller while Bluetooth audio is active, disconnect the Bluetooth audio device first.
This limit explains a common apparent pairing failure: a third controller may be correctly paired in principle but unable to connect while audio remains active. Disconnect the headphones or other Bluetooth audio device, then return to Change Grip/Order and pair the additional controller.

If pairing behaves unexpectedly, check that Switch 2 has the latest system update, then return to Controllers > Change Grip/Order and start the pairing process again.
Troubleshoot pairing and recognition problems
The controller does not pair
- Wake the console fully if it is asleep; pairing cannot begin while the console is sleeping.
- Open Controllers > Change Grip/Order before holding SYNC. The SYNC press is intended to be made from that screen.
- Hold SYNC for at least one second rather than tapping it.
- After the player LED is assigned, complete the grip confirmation. Stopping after the SYNC press leaves the controller layout unconfirmed.
- Install the latest Switch 2 system update, then retry the menu procedure.
- Keep the controller near the console while the pairing screen is open.
The player LED does not stay lit
Return to the pairing screen and repeat the SYNC press while keeping the controller near the console. Wait for the assigned player LED to remain lit before pressing the grip-confirmation buttons. If the console is asleep or the pairing menu is closed, repeat the process from the beginning rather than relying on a short SYNC tap.
The game sees two controllers when you wanted one
The console has likely registered the Joy-Con 2 separately as horizontal controllers. Open Change Grip/Order and confirm the combined layout with L/R or ZL/ZR on the left and right controllers.
The game sees one pair when you wanted two players
Repeat the pairing screen and press SL and SR on each Joy-Con 2. That tells Switch 2 to treat each controller as an individual horizontal unit.
A third controller will not connect
Check whether a Bluetooth audio device is connected. With Bluetooth audio active, only two wireless controllers may be connected, and each Joy-Con 2 counts separately. Disconnect the audio device, then pair the additional controller from Change Grip/Order. Also remember that the eight-controller figure is a pairing maximum, not a guarantee that every eight-controller combination can be active at once.
Joy-Con 2 is not recognized when attached
- Verify that the right controller with the + button is on the right rail and the left controller with the − button is on the left.
- Align the bottom first and bring the top edge close until the controller clicks.
- Keep fingers and other objects out of the rail gap while attaching.
- Detach and reattach the controller squarely, then test it again.
- Once it is recognized, remember that detaching should leave it registered for wireless use.
Original Joy-Con will not slide onto Switch 2
This is expected behavior. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con pair wirelessly but are not designed to attach to the Switch 2 console. Use a compatible charging accessory when they need to be charged.
The wrong player number appears
Return to Change Grip/Order and pair the controller again while watching the player LED assigned by the console. Then complete the intended grip confirmation. The LED identifies the controller number; the L/R, ZL/ZR, or SL/SR confirmation establishes whether the controllers operate together or separately.

Why does the console ask me to press L and R after pairing?
SYNC identifies the controller, but it does not specify the grip. Pressing L on the left and R on the right, or ZL and ZR, confirms that the two Joy-Con 2 should operate together as one controller.
