Before wiring four speakers, check three things: whether they are passive or powered, how many amplifier channels you have, and the speakers’ rated impedance versus the amplifier’s minimum supported impedance. For four identical 8-ohm passive speakers on a two-channel stereo amplifier, the common arrangement is two speakers per channel; wiring each pair in parallel gives a 4-ohm load per channel, while wiring each pair in series gives 16 ohms. Use either arrangement only if the amplifier manual allows the resulting load.
What to check before connecting four speakers
First identify what equipment you have. Passive speakers need an external amplifier; powered speakers contain their own amplifiers and should not be connected to a power amplifier’s speaker outputs as though they were passive loads. Then count the available amplifier channels and read the impedance ratings on the speakers and the amplifier’s manual.
- Speaker type: passive or powered.
- Amplifier channels: for the standard stereo example below, two channels—left and right.
- Impedance: each speaker’s nominal rating and the amplifier’s minimum supported load per channel, for the mode you plan to use.
- Connection instructions: terminal, connector, polarity, and any permitted speaker-linking arrangement specified by the equipment makers.
The amplifier’s stated minimum is the controlling limit. A wiring diagram is not safe merely because the connectors fit: the combined load must be supported by that particular amplifier. Yamaha’s PA Beginners Guide: Amplifier gives model-specific examples and cautions that three 8-ohm speakers in parallel present less than 3 ohms, a potentially unsafe load for many power amplifiers. Do not assume every amplifier supports 2 ohms, or any other minimum.

How to wire four passive speakers to a two-channel amplifier
For a stereo setup, assign two speakers to the left channel and two to the right. Within each channel’s pair, choose series or parallel wiring based on the resulting impedance and the amplifier manual. The example calculations below assume four identical speakers; mixed-impedance speakers need a separate calculation and must be checked against the manufacturer’s allowed configurations.

Parallel: lower impedance per channel
For two equal-impedance speakers in parallel, divide one speaker’s impedance by two. Yamaha Commercial Audio states that “When two 8-ohm speakers are connected in parallel, the total impedance for the two speakers is 4 ohms.” Thus, two 8-ohm speakers in parallel on each stereo channel present 4 ohms to each channel. Make this connection only if the amplifier supports 4 ohms per channel in the selected mode.
Parallel wiring places a greater load on the amplifier because it lowers the combined impedance. It is often straightforward to add a compatible speaker in parallel, but every addition changes the load and must stay within the amplifier’s rating. The exact output power and sound level depend on the amplifier and speaker models; the impedance calculation alone does not establish how loud the system will play.

Series: higher impedance per channel
In series, add the speaker impedances. Two 8-ohm speakers in series on one channel present 16 ohms; repeating this on the other channel gives 16 ohms per channel. This is a lighter load than a lower-impedance parallel pair, but the amplifier and speaker makers’ instructions still govern whether it is an appropriate configuration.

Passive and powered speakers use different connections
Passive speakers
Use cable intended for speaker connections between the amplifier’s speaker outputs and passive speakers. Follow the specified terminal or connector type and polarity. Some PA speakers include parallel input/output connectors for linking another compatible passive speaker; those connectors do not remove the need to calculate the combined load and check that it is within the amplifier’s limits. Powered speakers
Connect each powered speaker’s signal input using the designated signal connection, then use only output, thru, or link connections the speaker manual permits. Powered speakers have their own amplification; do not treat them as passive loads or connect them to a power amplifier’s speaker output unless the product instructions explicitly specify that connection.
When a 70- or 100-volt system makes more sense
For many speakers distributed across a commercial space, a properly designed 70- or 100-volt constant-voltage system may be more appropriate than chaining low-impedance speakers in parallel. It requires a compatible amplifier and transformer-equipped speakers, and the aggregate speaker power must remain within the amplifier’s output rating. It is a different system design, not a workaround for connecting an arbitrary number of ordinary speakers to a low-impedance amplifier. Connection and troubleshooting checks
- Read the equipment manuals. Confirm the amplifier’s minimum impedance for the selected operating mode and the speaker makers’ permitted connections.
- Calculate each channel’s load. For identical speakers, use the series sum or the equal-speaker parallel calculation above. Do not apply the equal-speaker shortcut to mixed impedances.
- Match the cable and connectors. Use speaker cable for passive speaker runs and the signal connections specified for powered speakers. Check polarity and keep conductors on the intended terminals.
- Make connections with equipment off. Follow the product manuals’ connection procedure, and keep bare conductors from touching one another.
- If the amplifier enters protection, shuts down, or becomes unusually hot, stop playback. Recheck for a short, incorrect wiring, or a load below the amplifier’s rating before using the system again. Do not keep operating it in the hope that the problem will clear.
