Claude Code can work with Auth0 tenant resources through the Auth0 MCP Server, which exposes Management API operations as tools. That connection lets an agent use project context and tenant-management tools in the same session; it does not configure your application to authenticate users or protect its APIs. Start with minimal, read-only permissions, verify the connection, and approve any consequential code or tenant changes yourself.

Understand the three separate connections

There are three distinct pieces in this workflow. Keeping them separate helps prevent a working developer tool connection from being mistaken for a secured application.

  • Claude Code’s MCP client configuration tells Claude Code how to start and communicate with the Auth0 MCP Server.
  • The MCP Server’s delegated access authorizes that server to call selected Auth0 Management API operations for the tenant.
  • Your application’s authentication validates Auth0-issued tokens when users or services call an application API. This must be implemented in the application independently.

Auth0 describes the MCP Server as exposing Management API operations to compatible agents. Its separate API-authorization example creates a resource server, configures an Action and client application, obtains a token, and calls a protected endpoint. Treat those as two related but independent tasks: tenant administration through MCP does not secure the codebase being edited.

Prerequisites and permission planning

The Auth0 tutorial dated September 29, 2026 lists Node.js v18 or higher, the Claude Code CLI, an Auth0 account with administrative permissions on the target tenant, and the tenant domain as prerequisites. Commands and available configuration options can change; check the current Claude Code and Auth0 instructions before using them.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Auth0 says the MCP Server receives no scopes by default: scopes are explicitly requested during initialization, and scope names correspond to Management API operations. Request only what the initial task needs. For example, a read-only inventory task should not receive write access simply because a demonstration used broad scopes.

  • update:actions can allow custom code to be pushed into production.
  • read:logs can expose detailed user activity and authentication events.
  • Review the requested scopes for the installed server version, then expand them only when a specific task requires additional operations.

Human approval still matters. An agent with tenant write access can make consequential changes, and code produced in the same session needs ordinary review and testing before deployment.

Connect Claude Code to the Auth0 MCP Server

The Auth0 tutorial’s local setup uses the MCP Server’s initialization command, followed by a stdio server registration in the project directory:

  • Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
  • Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
  • Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
  1. Initialize the Auth0 MCP Server and request the smallest practical scope set for your first task:

    npx @auth0/auth0-mcp-server init

Follow the prompts for the tenant and requested scopes. The exact scope choices depend on the task; begin with read-only access where possible.

  2. From the project directory, register the server with Claude Code:

    claude mcp add auth0 -- npx -y @auth0/auth0-mcp-server run

The tutorial describes local, project, or user configuration scope choices and says Claude Code stores local configuration in ~/.claude.json. Choose a scope appropriate to who should use the connection, and confirm the current CLI behavior in its documentation.

  3. Complete the browser-based authorization when prompted. The described flow uses OAuth 2.0 Device Authorization rather than a static API key or client secret: you authenticate in a browser and explicitly grant the requested scopes.

  4. Ask Claude Code for a low-impact, read-only check of a tenant resource within the permissions granted. Confirm that it returns the expected information and that no write action was taken before allowing a task that changes tenant configuration.

Auth0 says credentials from this interactive flow are stored in the operating system keychain rather than in plain-text project files. The browser-based login makes this flow intended for interactive developer use, not unattended CI jobs.

Choose the right authorization flow for the environment

Device authorization and client credentials address different operating conditions. Neither is universally safer in isolation: risk depends on what the identity can access, how credentials are stored, and how the workflow is operated.

Access pattern Interactivity Identity represented Credential handling Typical environment
OAuth 2.0 Device Authorization Interactive browser authentication and explicit user consent Delegated authorization for the signed-in user The tutorial says resulting credentials are kept in the operating system keychain Developer workstation
OAuth 2.0 Client Credentials Unattended token request using application credentials Application identity Manage credentials as secrets and restrict permissions to the job CI, daemon, or backend service

Auth0’s Client Credentials Flow documentation describes exchanging application credentials for an access token for machine-to-machine use, including CLIs, daemons, and backend services. For CI, create an application identity for the job, keep its credentials in the platform’s secret-management system, and grant only the required API permissions. Do not treat an interactive user/device-flow setup as a CI credential.

Keep application API authentication separate

If the goal is to protect an API in the codebase, configure that API’s Auth0 authorization independently of MCP. In the tutorial’s illustrative workflow, the developer registers a resource server with an identifier, requests a client-credentials token from the Auth0 Authentication API, and sends a bearer token to a local protected endpoint. Those steps demonstrate the distinction; the sample domains and credentials are placeholders, and the code is not evidence of an independently tested implementation.

Auth0 Agent Skills are another adjacent resource: Auth0 says they help coding assistants implement Auth0 authentication in applications, including Claude Code, and that its Auth0 plugin is available through the official Claude Code plugins marketplace. Agent Skills support application-authentication work; they are not a substitute for the MCP Server connection used to manage tenant resources.

Review changes before they take effect

Use the agent for investigation and bounded tasks, but preserve normal safeguards for changes. Before granting write scopes or accepting a proposed change:

  • Check which Management API scopes the installed server version requests and remove permissions unrelated to the task.
  • Inspect proposed tenant changes and application code rather than approving them solely because the agent generated them.
  • Pay particular attention to production-impacting Action changes and access to detailed logs.
  • Use your established code review, testing, and deployment process before shipping application changes.
