Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Rust’s centralized-banning feature checks a web API whenever a player joins. To connect it, you need an HTTP(S) ban API—either one you operate, one supplied by your host, or a compatible open-source implementation—then set the server.bansServerEndpoint convar to that API’s base URL. Facepunch does not provide the ban server itself.
What centralized banning does
A normal Rust ban is stored and enforced by an individual server. Centralized banning moves the authoritative list to a web service that multiple Rust servers can consult. When a player connects, the Rust server sends the player’s SteamID64 to the configured endpoint. The API replies with the ban record, if one exists, and Rust can deny the connection or apply the relevant mute information.
The connection has two independent parts:
- A ban API: a reachable HTTP or HTTPS service containing your shared bans and, where supported, mutes.
- The Rust convar:
server.bansServerEndpoint, set to the API’s base address in the server configuration.
Facepunch’s Centralized Banning documentation explicitly says that it does not provide an implementation of the API and describes the API as relatively simple to implement. You therefore cannot enable centralized banning with a Rust setting alone; an API must exist first.
Choose the API that will hold your bans
Run your own API
Self-hosting gives you control over the database, authentication, backups and which servers can query the list. Your web service must remain reachable from every Rust server that uses it. The community project RustCentralBanServer is an open-source example described as a “Central Banning Server for rust servers and developers.” Treat it as software you must deploy and maintain: confirm its current installation instructions, database requirements and response format before putting it in production.

Use a hosting provider’s implementation
Some game-server hosts provide a centralized-ban implementation or access to a private ban database. Their control panels usually let you place the convar in server.cfg. The provider must give you the API base URL and explain how its ban records are managed. A host-provided service may be easiest when all of your Rust servers are with that provider, but check whether servers outside its network can query the API.
Do not confuse it with an RCON ban-list service
RustTools’ “Ban Lists” documentation describes a different design: it pushes banid RCON commands to subscribed servers. That is not the server.bansServerEndpoint feature. An RCON list distributes commands to each server; centralized banning causes each server to look up the joining player in an HTTP API. Decide which mechanism you are using before configuring anything, and use only one approach for a given server unless you deliberately understand how the two lists will interact.

Understand the API contract before configuring Rust
The Facepunch documentation describes one request for each joining player:
GET /api/rustBans/{steamID64}
Replace {steamID64} with the player’s 64-bit SteamID. If your base URL is https://domain.tld/api/rustBans/, the completed request for a player would append that SteamID64 to the path. Keep the path and slash conventions expected by your API; a base URL that points to the wrong route will produce a lookup failure even when the web server itself is online.
The documented ban response contains these values:

Field naming and exact serialization are part of the API contract, so verify the current Facepunch documentation and the implementation you deploy before releasing the service. Do not silently rename fields in your database and assume Rust will translate them. Also confirm how your chosen implementation represents a player who has no ban record; that behavior belongs to the API implementation and should be tested with an unlisted account.

Set up a hosted Rust server
These steps apply when your provider exposes a control panel and gives you a compatible centralized-ban endpoint.

- Obtain the endpoint from the provider. Ask for the API base URL, not a complete URL containing a specific SteamID. The documented example is
https://domain.tld/api/rustBans/. - Open the server configuration. In the control panel, locate the file editor or startup configuration for
server.cfg. Use the configuration belonging to the Rust instance that should share the list. - Add the convar. Add one line using the exact base URL supplied by the API operator:
server.bansServerEndpoint "https://domain.tld/api/rustBans/" - Save the file. Preserve the quotation marks and avoid adding a player-specific path to the value. If the provider supplies a different path, use that path exactly.
- Reload the configuration from the server console. Run
writecfg, thenreadcfg, as directed by the hosting setup. These commands make the configuration change take effect in the running instance according to the provider’s procedure. - Reconnect with a test account. Use an account that is not banned and observe the server console and API access logs. The test should demonstrate a request to the expected route, with that account’s SteamID64 appended.
If your host automatically regenerates server.cfg, confirm that the line survives a restart. A setting that works until the next panel update is not a completed deployment.
Set up a self-hosted Rust server
For a server you administer directly, place the convar in the server configuration used at startup and save it with the Rust configuration command. The documented setting is:
server.bansServerEndpoint "https://domain.tld/api/rustBans/"
- Deploy the API first. Verify that the web service is running, its database contains the intended records, and the server hosting Rust can resolve and reach its hostname.
- Check the route independently. Request the API path for a known test value. The RustCentralBanServer README suggests testing
GET /api/rustBans/test; use that test only as an implementation check, becausetestis not a real SteamID64. - Set the convar in the Rust configuration. Use the API base URL, including any path and trailing slash required by the implementation.
- Persist the setting. Run
server.writecfgfrom the Rust server console so the convar is written to the server’s configuration. - Restart or reload as appropriate. Follow your server wrapper’s normal configuration-reload procedure, then inspect the effective configuration and logs.
- Test both outcomes. Join with an unlisted account, then use a controlled temporary ban record for a test account. Remove the test record after confirming the expected player-facing result.
The exact console workflow can vary with the server wrapper and deployment layout. The important checks are that the convar is saved in the configuration actually loaded by this instance and that the running process can reach the endpoint.

Build and operate the ban service safely
Use a stable, reachable address
Every joining player can trigger an API lookup, so the endpoint must be available whenever your servers accept connections. Use a hostname or address that will not change unexpectedly. If you move the API, update every Rust server configuration before taking the old address offline.
Prefer HTTPS for the connection
The convar accepts an HTTP(S) endpoint. HTTPS protects the request and response while they cross the network and prevents a third party from altering a ban decision in transit. Keep the certificate valid for the hostname configured in the convar and renew it before expiration.
Restrict administration separately from lookups
The API needs a way for authorized staff or automation to create, update and remove bans. Keep those write operations separate from the read route used by Rust, and limit administrative access to trusted operators. The Rust server only needs the lookup behavior; it should not require unrestricted database access.
Store time values consistently
Expiry is represented as a Unix timestamp. Generate and compare it in UTC-based epoch seconds, and make the permanent value explicit as a value less than or equal to zero. Do not convert an expiry to a local clock string before returning it. When investigating a disputed ban, record the timestamp, the intended time zone used by staff, and the value returned to Rust.

A centralized list is useful only if it survives an API host failure. Back up the ban database and document how to restore it. Test restoration separately from the Rust server so a database problem is not confused with a convar or networking problem.

Verify that the connection works
- Configuration check: the effective Rust configuration contains
server.bansServerEndpointand the expected base URL. - Network check: the Rust host can resolve the API hostname and establish the required HTTP(S) connection.
- Route check: a request reaches
/api/rustBans/{steamID64}, not merely the API home page. - Identity check: the value appended to the route is the joining player’s 64-bit SteamID.
- Response check: a known record returns the documented SteamID, reason, expiry timestamp and, when applicable,
isMute. - Player check: an unlisted account can join, while a controlled temporary ban produces the intended player-facing reason and expiry.
- Persistence check: the setting and the API data remain after a Rust restart and an API restart.
Keep the Rust console and API access logs together during testing. The combination tells you whether the server never attempted a lookup, used the wrong URL, reached the API but received an unexpected response, or received a valid record that was configured incorrectly.

No request appears in the API logs
Check that the convar is in the configuration loaded by this particular server instance, then run the required configuration reload or restart. Confirm that the value is spelled exactly server.bansServerEndpoint. If several Rust instances share a host, make sure you edited the intended instance rather than a template or another server’s file.
The API returns a route error
Compare the configured base URL with the implementation’s route. Rust expects the API lookup form /api/rustBans/{steamID64}. A duplicated path segment, missing slash, reverse-proxy rewrite or an endpoint that expects a different capitalization can all produce a route error. Test a complete URL with a known SteamID64 outside the game server, then correct the convar or proxy route.

Confirm that the ban record uses the player’s 64-bit SteamID, not a display name or another identifier. Check that the API returns the record for that exact ID and that the expiry timestamp has not passed. If the record is intended to be permanent, use a value less than or equal to zero as specified by the contract.
The reason or mute behaves incorrectly
Inspect the response field names and value types against the current API documentation. A reason is player-facing, while isMute identifies a mute. Make sure your implementation is not returning a Boolean as text or omitting the mute flag. Mutes are part of the centralized API’s documented data model and can be shared across servers; an RCON ban-list service may not provide the same capability.

The setting disappears after a restart
Save it with the appropriate configuration command and inspect the file that the startup wrapper actually reads. Hosted panels may overwrite files during deployment, while self-hosted wrappers may use a separate configuration directory. Make the change in the authoritative location and repeat the persistence check.
The centralized list conflicts with an RCON list
Identify which service is issuing the ban. A centralized endpoint performs a lookup when the player joins; an RCON list sends banid commands. Disable the unneeded integration or establish a documented ownership rule so operators know which system to edit and how removals propagate.
Operational checklist for multiple servers
- Choose one API and document its owner, hostname, route and data store.
- Record every Rust server that uses the endpoint and the configuration file in which the convar is stored.
- Define who may create permanent bans, temporary bans and mutes.
- Use a consistent SteamID64 and Unix-timestamp policy across the API and administrative tools.
- Test an unlisted player, a temporary ban, a permanent ban and a mute before enabling the list for a live community.
- Monitor API availability and retain enough logs to match a Rust join attempt to its lookup.
- Back up the ban database and rehearse a restore.
- When changing providers or domains, update and verify all servers before removing the old endpoint.
What the final configuration should look like
Once the API is deployed and tested, the Rust-side configuration is deliberately small:
server.bansServerEndpoint "https://domain.tld/api/rustBans/"
The server uses that base URL to make a request in the form GET /api/rustBans/{steamID64} for each joining player. The reliability of the feature then depends on the API’s availability, route, response fields and ban data—not on an additional Rust plugin.
