To connect Bluetooth earbuds, headphones, or a speaker to a TV, first put the audio device into pairing mode. Then open the TV’s Bluetooth or audio-output settings, select the device, and confirm pairing. The exact menu depends on the TV or streaming platform, and the TV must support transmitting audio over Bluetooth—not merely using Bluetooth accessories such as a remote.
Google TV, Apple TV, and recent Samsung televisions have documented pairing menus. If your TV has no Bluetooth-audio output, a compatible transmitter connected to an available audio output may provide another route. Compatibility, the number of connected devices, speaker behavior, and lip-sync performance vary by model and region.
Check whether the TV can send audio over Bluetooth
A TV can include Bluetooth for a remote, keyboard, game controller, or other accessory without supporting Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Before trying to pair, look up the exact model number in the television’s specifications and user guide. Search its settings for labels such as Bluetooth Speaker List, Bluetooth audio, Wireless speaker, or Audio output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSony identifies the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) as the Bluetooth profile required for Google TV or Android TV to send audio to Bluetooth headphones or speakers. A model that lacks A2DP may still show Bluetooth settings for other accessory types. Sony also cautions that operation is not guaranteed with every combination of TV and Bluetooth audio device. Check the specifications for your particular model rather than relying on the TV brand alone: Sony’s A2DP guidance.

Have the earbuds, headphones, or speaker charged and close to the TV. If they are already connected to a phone, tablet, or another TV, disconnect them first; many products will not enter discoverable mode while maintaining another connection.
Put the earbuds, headphones, or speaker into pairing mode
Pairing mode makes the accessory visible to the TV. The method varies by product:
- For earbuds, open the charging case and hold its pairing button, or touch and hold the earbuds’ controls, until the status light flashes.
- For over-ear headphones, hold the power or Bluetooth button for several seconds until the indicator changes or a voice prompt announces pairing mode.
- For a speaker, hold its Bluetooth button until the Bluetooth icon flashes or the speaker announces that it is ready to pair.
Use the accessory’s manual if the light pattern is unclear. A device that is powered on but not in discoverable mode may not appear in the TV’s scan list.
Connect Bluetooth audio on Google TV
Google’s documented route applies to Google TV devices with Bluetooth-audio support. Menu labels can differ slightly between manufacturers and software versions.
- From the Google TV home screen, open your profile or the settings area.
- Choose Settings > Remote & Accessories > Pair remote or accessory.
- Put the earbuds, headphones, or speaker into pairing mode if you have not already done so.
- Select the audio device when it appears in the list.
- Choose Pair and wait for the connection confirmation.
For an accessory that was paired previously, return to Settings > Remote & Accessories and select it from the list of available devices. Google’s cited guide allows one connected audio device at a time on the platform described there. If your Google TV hardware or software exposes different options, follow its on-screen instructions and model documentation: Google TV Help.

For Samsung Australia’s 2023–2026 models, the current path is Settings > All Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List. Older televisions use different menus, and Samsung states that settings vary by model and region. The Australian support page is regional, so use the guide for your country and exact model: Samsung Australia Support.
Samsung’s Canadian instructions also direct owners to the Bluetooth speaker list under sound output: Samsung Canada Support. On some 2022 Samsung TVs, Samsung describes a Multi Connect feature that can connect more than one Bluetooth audio device. This is not a universal Samsung capability; verify that your model specifically supports it: Samsung US Support.
What to do on another TV
Open the TV’s settings and look under Sound, Audio, Connections, or Accessories. Select an option that explicitly refers to Bluetooth audio output, then scan for the accessory while it is in pairing mode. Do not assume that a menu called simply “Bluetooth” controls TV sound; it may be reserved for remotes or input devices.

If the TV has a streaming box or stick connected, check whether the streaming device—not the television—is the component that supports Bluetooth audio. Pair through that device’s settings and select it as the active sound output. A streaming device can only send audio from content it plays; audio from another TV input may continue through the television’s own speakers.

A separate Bluetooth audio transmitter can convert a compatible wired audio output into a Bluetooth connection. The transmitter receives sound from the TV through an output such as optical digital audio and sends it to the earbuds, headphones, or speaker.
Check both sides before buying:
- Confirm that the TV has an audio output the transmitter accepts, such as optical, 3.5 mm analog, or RCA. An HDMI input is not automatically an audio output.
- Check whether the TV output is active and whether its format is compatible with the transmitter. Some optical outputs need to be set to PCM rather than a surround format.
- Verify that the transmitter supports the type and number of Bluetooth audio devices you intend to use.
- Confirm how the transmitter receives power and whether it can remain connected without blocking another audio connection.
Sony documents a separately sold wireless transmitter connected to the optical output for specified Android TV models that lack A2DP. Those instructions are limited to the listed models and are not a guarantee for every Sony television or every transmitter: Sony’s transmitter instructions. Apply the same model-specific check to any other television.
Choose between direct pairing and a transmitter
| Route | What you need | Advantages | Limitations to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV’s built-in Bluetooth audio | A TV with Bluetooth audio output and compatible earbuds, headphones, or speaker | No extra box or cable; pairing is handled in the TV menu | Support, device count, speaker behavior, and latency vary by model and region |
| Streaming device’s Bluetooth audio | A streaming device that supports Bluetooth audio and the accessory | Useful when the TV itself lacks the feature | May apply only to content played by that streaming device, not every TV input |
| External Bluetooth transmitter | A transmitter plus a compatible TV audio output and cable | Can add wireless listening to a TV without built-in Bluetooth audio | Requires port and format compatibility; adds another powered device and may introduce delay |
Use the exact TV model, the accessory specifications, and the available ports as the deciding information. Manufacturer support does not establish that every Bluetooth codec, headphone, or speaker will work identically.
Make the paired device the active sound output
Pairing and audio routing are separate steps on some televisions. If the accessory shows as connected but sound still comes from the TV, open the sound-output menu and explicitly choose the Bluetooth headphones or speaker. Raise the accessory’s own volume and confirm that it is not muted.

When using an optical or analog transmitter, select the corresponding TV output and set the transmitter to its receive or transmit mode as described in its manual. If the TV offers separate settings for built-in speakers and an external output, choose the one feeding the transmitter.
Understand speaker playback and device-count limits
There is no universal rule for how many Bluetooth audio devices a TV can use. Google’s cited guide permits one connected audio device at a time. Samsung’s Australian guidance likewise describes one device for the products covered there, while Samsung documents Multi Connect on certain 2022 US models. Your model may differ.
Simultaneous TV-speaker and Bluetooth playback is also model-dependent. Some televisions mute their internal speakers when Bluetooth output is selected; others provide a separate “TV speaker plus Bluetooth” or accessibility option. Look for that setting in the sound menu instead of assuming both outputs will play together.

The accessory does not appear
- Turn the accessory off, then re-enter pairing mode; being powered on is not the same as being discoverable.
- Move it close to the TV and scan again.
- Disconnect it from phones, tablets, computers, and other nearby devices.
- Check its charge and install any available accessory firmware update.
- Test pairing with a phone or tablet. If it cannot connect there either, reset or service the accessory before troubleshooting the TV.
The accessory appears but will not connect
Remove or forget the old entry in the TV’s Bluetooth list, restart both devices, and pair again. On Apple TV, Apple specifically recommends forgetting and re-pairing an accessory that appears but will not connect. Check for wireless interference and keep the accessory within the manufacturer’s stated range.

Pairing succeeds but there is no sound
- Choose the Bluetooth device explicitly under the TV’s sound-output setting.
- Check volume and mute controls on both the TV and accessory.
- Confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio transmission, not only Bluetooth remote or input accessories.
- If using a transmitter, verify the selected wired output, cable, input mode, and digital-audio format.
- Try a different compatible audio device to determine whether the problem is limited to one accessory.
Deal with delay, dropouts, and range
Bluetooth listening can be out of sync with the picture. Samsung’s support warning for its Australian products is explicit: “Lip-sync errors may occur.” Sony does not guarantee functionality or audio latency for every TV and Bluetooth-device combination. The official guidance does not establish a universal millisecond delay, so no general latency figure can predict your result.
Keep the accessory within a clear, short range of the TV, reduce nearby wireless interference, and keep both devices’ software current. If the TV or accessory offers a lip-sync or audio-delay adjustment, change it in small increments while watching speech. A transmitter and headphones that support a low-latency mode may help in some combinations, but compatibility must be confirmed for the specific TV and accessory; no codec setting guarantees perfect synchronization.
Dropouts often indicate distance, obstructions, competing connections, low battery, or a device-specific compatibility issue. Re-pair after disconnecting unused Bluetooth devices, then test with the accessory close to the TV. If interruptions continue only with one model of headphones or speaker, consult that product’s support documentation rather than assuming the television is defective.

- TV supports Bluetooth audio: Pair directly through its sound-output or accessory menu.
- TV has Bluetooth but no audio-output option: Treat Bluetooth as accessory-only and check for a wired-output transmitter.
- TV lacks the required port: Check whether a compatible streaming device can provide Bluetooth audio, or whether another audio-output method is available.
- You need two listeners: Verify a documented multi-device feature; do not rely on a universal device-count assumption.
- Speech is delayed: Try a closer range, current software, a lip-sync adjustment, or a different compatible TV/accessory combination.
Frequently asked questions
Can I connect Bluetooth earbuds to any TV?
No. The TV must support Bluetooth audio transmission, and the earbuds must be compatible with the TV’s implementation. Bluetooth support for a remote or keyboard is not sufficient.
Can I use a Bluetooth speaker instead of earbuds?
Yes, if the TV or an attached transmitter supports Bluetooth audio output and the speaker can pair using the supported profile. Follow the same discoverable-mode and sound-output steps.
Why does my TV find the headphones but keep using its speakers?
Finding or pairing an accessory does not always switch the active output. Open the TV’s sound settings and select the connected Bluetooth device; also check its volume and mute state.
Will Bluetooth always be synchronized with the picture?
No. Samsung warns that lip-sync errors may occur, and Sony does not guarantee latency for every TV and Bluetooth-device combination. Performance depends on the specific hardware, software, distance, and connection.
