The connection works only when the source device can send a video signal that your glasses accept. For most wired display-style AR glasses, that means a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode (also called DisplayPort over USB-C), or an HDMI source paired with a compatible, powered HDMI-to-USB-C adapter. A USB-C-shaped socket alone does not guarantee video output. Check the exact phone, computer, console, glasses generation, cable and adapter before you connect anything.

What you need to check before connecting

AR glasses sold as displays are not all connected in the same way. Some receive audio and video through a cable; others may add spatial tracking or virtual-screen features through a specific adapter and app. The first task is to identify the signal path your equipment supports.

1. Identify the glasses connection type

  • Direct USB-C display connection: The glasses plug into a source USB-C port that supports DisplayPort video. RayNeo describes this path for its Air-series glasses on compatible phones, tablets, laptops and consoles. Its support FAQ states that Air glasses use a wired USB-C connection and do not support wireless connections.
  • HDMI conversion: An HDMI source needs an adapter that converts HDMI video to the USB-C connection required by the glasses. The adapter must be compatible with the particular glasses model and normally needs its own power.
  • Lightning conversion: Older iPhones need a Lightning-to-HDMI stage, followed by a compatible powered HDMI-to-USB-C glasses adapter. This is a product-specific chain, not a universal Lightning accessory.

2. Verify the source port, not just its shape

Look in the phone, computer or console specifications for “DisplayPort over USB-C,” “DP Alt Mode” or equivalent wording. Some USB-C ports handle charging and data only. If video output is not documented, ask the device manufacturer or consult the glasses maker’s compatibility list. XREAL’s official guidance likewise describes supported DisplayPort-capable devices as carrying audio and video through the port; the connector shape by itself is not proof.

3. Confirm the exact model and region

Compatibility can vary between device variants, firmware versions, regions and glasses generations. A phone family may contain one model with DisplayPort output and another with a USB-C port limited to charging and data. Advanced features can have a narrower compatibility list than basic mirroring. Check both manufacturers’ current lists before buying an adapter.

Connect AR glasses to an Android phone

Before you plug in

  1. Write down the exact phone model and the glasses model.
  2. Check the phone’s specifications for DisplayPort over USB-C or DP Alt Mode. Do not rely on the presence of a USB-C socket.
  3. Use the cable supplied with the glasses, or another cable explicitly approved by the glasses maker. A charge-only cable cannot carry the display signal.
  4. Charge the phone and glasses sufficiently for the session. If your setup includes an adapter, check its separate power requirement.

Direct USB-C procedure

  1. Turn on or wake the Android phone and leave it unlocked.
  2. Insert the USB-C cable into the glasses.
  3. Connect the other end to the phone’s documented DisplayPort-capable USB-C port.
  4. Unlock the phone if it was locked when connected. RayNeo’s Android instructions specifically call for unlocking after the cable is attached.
  5. Wait for the phone to mirror or extend its display in the glasses. If an Android prompt appears, approve the requested display or USB permission.

If the screen remains black, the most likely cause is that the phone’s USB-C port lacks video output, not a failure of wireless pairing. Test the phone against the glasses maker’s compatibility list before purchasing another cable.

What Android can and cannot do

Direct connection normally targets the phone’s screen signal. Spatial anchoring, 3D playback, multiple virtual screens or a desktop-style interface may require a manufacturer app, a supported phone, a particular glasses generation or a separate adapter. Treat “the glasses display the phone” and “every XR feature works” as two different compatibility questions.

Connect to a USB-C iPhone (iPhone 15 and later)

RayNeo and VITURE document a direct USB-C route for compatible iPhone 15-and-later setups. The exact glasses model still matters, especially for advanced features.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Direct connection

  1. Confirm that the iPhone model is supported by the glasses maker and that you are using the manufacturer-supplied or approved USB-C cable.
  2. Plug the cable into the glasses first.
  3. Plug the other end into the iPhone’s USB-C port.
  4. Unlock the iPhone. RayNeo’s instructions list unlocking as part of the connection sequence.
  5. Open the supported glasses app only if the feature you want requires it; basic display output may not require an app.

Basic mirroring versus SpaceWalker-style features

VITURE says iPhone 15 and later can connect directly for standard features, while its USB-C XR Charging Adapter enables additional SpaceWalker features on supported devices. The adapter is therefore not a general requirement for every USB-C iPhone connection. Check the compatibility notes for your glasses generation: VITURE lists model exceptions and partial feature support, so a working mirrored image does not prove that every spatial function is available.

Connect older Lightning iPhones

iPhone 14 and earlier models do not provide the same direct USB-C path. RayNeo specifies an Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter followed by an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter. VITURE documents a similar arrangement using its HDMI XR Adapter with Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter.

Required hardware chain

  1. Connect the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter to the iPhone’s Lightning port.
  2. Connect an HDMI cable from the Lightning adapter’s HDMI output to the compatible HDMI XR or HDMI-to-USB-C adapter.
  3. Connect the glasses’ USB-C cable to the adapter’s glasses output.
  4. Connect power to the conversion adapter as its maker specifies. RayNeo’s instructions explicitly say that the HDMI adapter should be fully charged for this Lightning-phone setup.
  5. Unlock the iPhone and select the expected display output if iOS presents a prompt.

Do not assume that an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter made for one glasses family will work with another. The adapter may carry video, supply power and provide feature support in a way that is specific to its manufacturer and glasses generation.

Connect AR glasses to a laptop or desktop

USB-C laptop or desktop

  1. Check the computer’s port markings and specifications for DisplayPort output over USB-C. Thunderbolt branding alone does not tell you how a particular port is configured, so use the computer’s documentation.
  2. Connect the glasses with the supplied or approved USB-C cable.
  3. On macOS, open System Settings > Displays. On Windows, open Settings > System > Display (the Display page is the relevant control in RayNeo’s PC guidance).
  4. Choose whether the glasses should mirror the built-in screen or extend the desktop. Arrange the displays if you selected an extended desktop.

If the computer does not detect the glasses

  • Try another USB-C port; a computer may have one video-capable port and another dedicated to charging or data.
  • Disconnect another external monitor temporarily. RayNeo notes that some computers support only one external display.
  • Reconnect the cable after the operating system has loaded, then revisit the display settings.
  • If the computer provides HDMI but no USB-C video output, use a compatible, powered HDMI-to-USB-C glasses adapter rather than a passive cable.

HDMI-only computers

An HDMI-to-USB-C glasses adapter must accept the computer’s HDMI output and provide the power and USB-C signaling expected by the glasses. Confirm whether the adapter supports audio, the required resolution and refresh rate, and any spatial features you plan to use. A basic adapter may provide only a mirrored screen.

Connect AR glasses to a game console

Console or handheld with USB-C video

A handheld or console can connect directly only when its specific USB-C port outputs DisplayPort video and the glasses maker lists that model as compatible. Follow the same sequence as a phone: connect the glasses cable, wake or unlock the console, and select the display mode if the console offers one.

PlayStation, Xbox and other HDMI consoles

For HDMI devices, VITURE documents using its HDMI XR Adapter with PlayStation and Xbox models. The general procedure is:

  1. Connect the console’s HDMI output to the compatible HDMI XR adapter.
  2. Connect the glasses’ USB-C cable to the adapter’s glasses port.
  3. Attach the adapter’s required power source.
  4. Set the console to the output resolution supported by the adapter and glasses if the image does not appear automatically.

Confirm support for the exact console revision, adapter and glasses model. An adapter that works with one HDMI console is not automatically approved for every console or every glasses generation.

Choosing the right adapter and power arrangement

Your source Accessory path Power issue to check Likely feature level
USB-C phone or computer with DP Alt Mode Usually no conversion adapter; use the approved USB-C cable The source may need to power the glasses, reducing its battery Basic mirroring; advanced XR depends on the model and app
Lightning iPhone Lightning Digital AV Adapter plus compatible HDMI-to-USB-C glasses adapter RayNeo says its HDMI adapter should be fully charged for this setup Display output; advanced functions depend on the adapter and glasses
HDMI computer or console Compatible HDMI XR or HDMI-to-USB-C adapter Follow the maker’s requirement for external power or charging Often mirroring; spatial features require explicit support
Supported USB-C iPhone needing additional spatial functions Optional USB-C XR Charging Adapter in VITURE’s documented setups Check simultaneous charging and adapter power limits Additional SpaceWalker features on supported devices

VITURE lists 2.8 hours of battery life for its HDMI XR Adapter. That figure describes the accessory, not the runtime of AR glasses generally, and should be treated as an undated product-support specification accessed in 2026.

  • Mirror: Shows the same image on the source and in the glasses. This is the simplest mode for games, presentations and phone video.
  • Extend: Creates a separate desktop area. Use the computer’s display settings to drag the virtual arrangement so the pointer moves in the expected direction.
  • Resolution and refresh rate: Start with the source’s default or an option listed as supported by the glasses and adapter. If the screen flickers or drops out, return to a lower supported setting.
  • Audio: Select the glasses or adapter as the output device when the operating system exposes a separate audio choice. Video output alone does not guarantee that audio is routed correctly.

Advanced features such as 3D playback, spatial anchoring and multiple virtual screens should be enabled only after basic video works. They may require a particular adapter, glasses generation and companion app.

Troubleshooting: symptom-by-symptom fixes

Nothing appears and the glasses remain black

  • Recheck that the source port supports DisplayPort video; USB-C by itself is insufficient.
  • Use the supplied or manufacturer-approved cable and reseat both ends.
  • Test another documented video-capable port on the computer.
  • For HDMI setups, verify that the adapter is powered and that the HDMI cable is connected to the adapter’s input.

The phone charges but does not display video

Charging confirms only that power is passing through the connection. It does not prove that the phone supports DisplayPort output. Check the exact phone specification and compatibility list. A USB-C phone without supported video output cannot use the direct path.

The computer detects the glasses intermittently

  • Disconnect another external display, since some computers limit external-display count.
  • Try a different USB-C port and reopen the operating system’s display settings.
  • Remove hubs or docks temporarily so the glasses connect directly to the computer.
  • Lower the selected resolution or refresh rate to a value supported by the glasses and adapter.

The adapter turns off during use

Check its charge level or connect the specified power source. The Lightning-phone instructions for RayNeo specifically require a fully charged HDMI-to-USB-C adapter. For other products, follow that manufacturer’s power diagram rather than assuming the console or phone can supply enough power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mirroring works, but spatial or multiscreen features do not

That result usually indicates a feature-compatibility difference rather than a failed display connection. Check whether the feature requires a brand-specific adapter, a companion app, a newer glasses generation, a supported operating-system version or a particular phone model. VITURE’s documentation, for example, distinguishes standard iPhone connection from additional SpaceWalker capabilities and lists exceptions for some glasses.

You expected wireless pairing

Do not treat Bluetooth discovery as the normal video path for wired display glasses. RayNeo explicitly says its Air glasses do not support wireless connections and require the included USB-C cable. Other product families may differ, so consult their specifications instead of generalizing from one model.

A practical compatibility decision process

  1. Start with the source port: Is it USB-C with documented DisplayPort output, or HDMI?
  2. Match the glasses input: Does the glasses model accept direct USB-C video, or does it require a particular HDMI adapter?
  3. Separate basic and advanced goals: Decide whether you need only mirroring or also 3D, spatial anchoring, multiscreen viewing or a companion-app workflow.
  4. Check power: Determine whether the phone, console or adapter must be charged, and whether using the glasses will reduce the source’s battery.
  5. Verify the exact combination: Confirm source model, glasses generation, adapter model, region and current firmware notes in the manufacturers’ compatibility lists.
  6. Connect directly first: Remove hubs and extra monitors while testing. Once basic video works, add the app, dock or other accessories required for advanced features.

What to remember

  • The deciding factor is a compatible video signal, not the physical shape of a USB-C connector.
  • Many Android phones and computers connect directly only through a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode.
  • USB-C iPhone 15-and-later setups can use a direct cable with compatible glasses; Lightning iPhones require a Lightning-to-HDMI-to-USB-C adapter chain.
  • HDMI consoles and computers need a compatible, powered HDMI XR or HDMI-to-USB-C adapter.
  • Basic screen mirroring and advanced XR functions are separate compatibility questions.

Manufacturers’ support pages can change, and compatibility may vary by device model, region, firmware and glasses generation. Check the current list for your exact combination immediately before purchase or troubleshooting.
